The Hostrum and Hayes stagecoach always runs to schedule, no matter what lies in wait down the road. But with the marriage of driver Whip Roundel’s young ward in the offing and the wedding day approaching fast, Whip and his partner, shotgun guard Cosum Beech, are hard pressed to make the late run. Not only must they pick up a mysterious wedding gift but also confront one of the most evil men on the frontier—a depraved and despicable killer called catamite Sam. Hard on his heels comes a bounty hunter and a devious pack of outlaws hired to take on the stage. And if that wasn’t tough enough there was also a band of determined Mexicans fresh from fighting the French invaders of their country. Every party joins the fray without an invitation … and that guarantees it’s going to be one hell of a wedding day!
Chance Nielsen creates exciting western stories by fusing a vivid imagination with elements of historical fact.
I'm sad the series ended with this book, as I liked the main characters and the often unusual plot twists.
In this one, a Gatling Gun is being transported by the stageline and at least two groups of outlaws want to get their hands on it. This leads to several excellent action set-pieces, including gun battles, knife fights and several demonstrations of just how effective a weapon a Gatling can be. That the author takes time to give personalities to all the supporting characters--including the bad guys--gives the action scenes more backbone as we have all the more reason for wanting to see certain people survive (or, in a few cases, finally get their just desserts.)
