Skottie Young has been an illustrator and cartoonist for over ten years working for entertainment and publishing companies such Marvel, Warner Bros., Image, Upper Deck, Mattel, and many more.
He is currently illustrating the New York Times Best Selling and Eisner Award Nominated adaptions of L. Frank Baum's OZ novels with writer Eric Shanower. The series has gained acclaim from both fans and critics.
Skottie currently lives in Illinois with his family, Casey, Baxter and their Saint Bernard, Emma.
… a mad little girl tried to destroy the wondrous Fairyland! But she failed and was banished to where all naughty children go: HELL! Except now that Fairyland faces destruction once more at the hands of something else, Gertie must somehow escape the Devil’s tortures and return to her most hated place to become its saviour. How will the story end? Sadly never after…
So after four books we’ve come to the end of Skottie Young’s subversive comic on children’s fairytales. And, like most of this series, Volume 4: Sadly Never After is just ok.
The art is, as always, the main attraction. Young’s art style is glorious and beautifully complemented by colourist Jean-Francois Beaulieu - as a huge fan of Young’s art, I was transfixed by the visuals the whole time.
The story though… eh. It was interesting to see Gertie’s parents at last as well as what Gertie would look like if she were her actual age of thirtysomething. I also liked Duncan Dragon as a Fairyland Postal Service worker and that the final words of the book were the series’ original title.
But Young chose to drearily fall back on superhero tropes for the main story. The Big Bad is a dark version of a once-good character while anti-hero Gert is forced into the role of hero, given temporary superpowers by a council of elders and fights the baddie in a stereotypically OTT loud bit of nonsense. It’s cliched, uninspired and boring.
I’m glad Young’s putting Fairyland on ice for the moment. It’s a fun concept that worked really well for the first book because it was fresh and new but became very clear almost immediately that the simplistic story couldn’t sustain an ongoing monthly. Not that the series is bad but it’s not been great either. Still, it is a rich world so I look forward to whenever Young decides to revisit it, as he’s said he will, for one-off done-in-one stories sometime in the future, hopefully with new characters and stories, though it might also be amusing to see how Gertie adapts to life post-Fairyland (“I Hated Fairyland”?).
‘Til next time, Gertie, you fluffin’ crazy muffin hugger!
Sometime in July, when I wasn't paying attention, Skottie Young announced this installment of the I Hate Fairyland series would be the final one. Imagine my surprise when I got to the last page of what was obviously the end of one of my favorite comic series. It was bittersweet.
Young brings the series to a close with Gertie trying one more time to get home. The last book ended on a cliffhanger with a surprise twist. He addresses that directly in the first pages of this installment.
"Yeah, that's why I'm completely unimpressed. Feels like a cheap stunt to end a story with a 'clever' cliffhanger, if you ask me."
Characters from the previous books all make an appearance, plus a few new ones. All-in-all, I enjoyed it.
The genius of this series is the idea that fairyland is one, built for children, and two, should have an expiration date. Gertrude, a foul-mouthed homicidal maniac in the form of a perpetually small child, is what would happen if someone was forced to endure endless disappointments in a futile effort to go home again. And was given a pointy-edged sword with little to no consequences for her actions.
All quests have ends though they may not be in the form the person going on the quest expected. I was pleased to see that Young didn't drag out this series beyond its own expiration date. Because he could have. Honestly, the beautiful world he created could have gone on and on if he had chosen (or had the time) to do so. But he embraced one of the lessons in the story and ended it in a timely and, I felt, dignified manner.
Recommended for adults who are looking for a different coming-of-age story in graphic novel format. Not appropriate for the younger set.
Well, this volume was much less blood and violent than the others for a Gert story. I read this is the last one. Gert finally finds a way to go home. The crazy characters are back and the world is in danger of being destroyed and this time only Gert can save it.
This is one twisted series and funny. It is hyper color and hyper stylized. I think they came up with a good ending and they ended it in a timely manner and did not drag it out forever. It's good to get an ending. There are some great series out there that need a good ending. It's a different series that had it's entertaining value.
It's official, Gert is the cutest, most charming kid that ever was and ever will be.
I'm sure going to miss the little darling. And her best chums Larry, Duncan, and Cloudia, too.
What a delightful, fun-loving bunch. What cheerful, jovial, ever-compassionate personalities. I can't believe this is the last I will see of them. It really isn't fair. Fluff my life and stuff.
Skottie, what happened? This series has been five stars all the way through for me and then I read the very last volume and all I can think to say is "that's it?" It wasn't terrible but it was so lackluster and I expected so much for a finale from the book. I wanted, no NEEDED more from this story. I mean it has some cool stuff in it - Gert's punishment in hell was fitting and cute but that is really all I even remember. There wasn't much in the way of dialogue - half of it was just full pages of photos. The art work is still fun and gory, but I think most fans of the series will find this a huge let down. Still love Gert though.
4.5 STARS WHAT DO YOU MEAN THIS IS THE LAST ONE?!?! I'm not ready for this to end! I do feel like maybe the ending for this was rushed (as a volume and as a series). As always though, I love the humor, I love the world, I love the art. Just didn't wish this wasn't ending so quickly. WHAT DO I READ NOW?!

EN This is incredibly fun!
This volume marks the end of a cycle. When the last issue of this volume was released, Skottie Young had no plans to continue the story, giving it a sense of closure.
Fortunately for us, he eventually decided to revisit this world, and there are now three more volumes to enjoy. I really hope Hyperion Comics publishes them quickly!
I especially loved the special issue where Gert faces off against the Image World — packed with references to Image characters and creators. So cool!
I loved this volume so much! The way Gert told them like it is! Even being profound and thought-provoking. The ending felt a little..flat though. But over-all I found it a nice ending to what I found to be an awesome series. BUT WHY DOES IT HAVE TO END! T.T
Right at the end of the last volume Gertrude was finally good, had completed her quest, received the key, survived the assassins and was almost at the door home. Almost. Then ... Yup, she died and is now in hell. But, of course, we needed a reason to bring her back and give her a shot at going home after all so a wicked plan was concocted and only Gertrude can save Fairyland now. In return, she'll be allowed to finally leave the place she hates the most. Apropos, ever wondered why she hates Fairyland so much? For this simple reason:
So we see hell and thus a new quest before it's clobberin' time one final time.
Honestly? It wasn't bad but I'm still glad it's over. This series should have been two volumes shorter if you ask me. Gertrude ROCKED at first what with this nice twist on all things Fairyland but the endless complaining and murdering and not-getting-home got old quick despite me very much liking Skottie Youngs style and the psychedelic colours that depict Fairyland so well.
Well, it's over now, that's the best I can say. So long, suckers! ;)
7.2/10 After many years trying to find a way out, going through dozens of adventures, kill countless amount of poor creatures and ( although neither of them will admit it) making a good friend, Gert has finally done it. She is out of Fairyland. Welcome back to the real world, you had a great run.
HOW IS THIS THE END. I NEED FLUFFIN' MOREEEE *sobs* This series was so hilarious, and weird in the best way possible, and I'm so, so sad it's over. Bonus, the art is super vibrant and definitely one of my favorite styles of all time.
This title was a hidden gem, and managed to go out on a high note, at just the right time, and on just the right terms l, with an appropriately bittersweet ending.
I certainly hope to see more spinoffs or one-shots in this universe. (Maybe something about Duncan Dragon, who was my favorite supporting character.)
I really enjoyed this series at a whole. The last volume in this series was just okay. It was a little convenient, but I guess in Fairyland style it makes sense.
If you like Fairytales, bright obnoxious colors and using fluff instead of the F word, then you are going to love this graphic novel series about a 40 year old stuck in a little girls body. Her resentment and bitterness for the world that she’s been stuck in for three decades is wholesome and endearing. Ha!
What I learned... listen to your guide. Defeat doesn’t necessarily mean kill and in a pinch rule books exist to counter loopholes that evil people try to pose on you.
Warning: This review contains spoilers for the first 3 volumes of this series. If you haven’t the previous volumes, stop reading this review.
What’s it about? Gert is dead and she wound up in Hell. Now, Fairyland is very likely to be destroyed by an ultra-powerful, evil being and Gert may be the only one who can save her. Now Larry and Duncan have to get Gert back from Hell and to Fairyland’s rescue.
Pros: The story is very interesting. Seeing how this series is wrapped up is something that I was obviously interested in as I have greatly enjoyed the series. The art is fantastic, just like it is in the previous 3 volumes! [image error] The characters are still interesting. I would say that they get more interesting as the series goes. This volume is pretty humorous throughout. This story is unpredictable. Fairyland Hell is quite interesting and fluffed up (as any story’s Hell should be). I would actually say that this is one of the most interesting, terrifying fictional takes on Hell I have read (which is surprising but interesting considering how cartoony this series is).
Cons: The ending. (Sigh) It’s one of those
Mixed thoughts: The action. On one hand, there is not as much action and gore as usual. On the other hand, when it gets to that in the final chapter it’s fluffing awesome!
Overall: Skottie Young is one real talented muffin-fluffer! In this book he gives a satisfying final volume to a great series! This final volume gives us the end to an interesting story with amazing art, interesting characters and brilliant dark humor! I had fun reading this series and to those reading this review who haven’t read I Hate Fairyland (not caring about the warning I guess), I really fluffing recommend this series!
I'm sad to see this series end, particularly because for some reason, this final volume was my least favorite of the series. I'm not sure what happened to the plot there at the end, but it felt like things were just all being thrown at the wall to see what would stick and it didn't work for me. That said, I'm still really happy that I picked this series back up and I loved the series overall, so I absolutely recommend it!
I meannnn this volume was really good just the ending...I'm not disappointed per se....just surprised? I hope the series gets picked back up for a sequel sometime cos I really enjoy the art and the writing!
The three previous volumes were all 5 star reads but unfortunately, this one was a let-down. The ending was rushed, and while Gert was as funny as ever, everything just felt a bit off. It was a disappointing ending to an otherwise amazing graphic novel series.
