2 Lackluster Stars

I recently (as in this week) read two Darkness novellas - this one and this one...which is supposedly considered a "full length" whole number installment, but at 99 overpriced pages, well...

description

In fact, I've come to two conclusions after finishing this last one:

1) Said novellas are not worth the price I paid for them. ($2.99 for each)

2) Katie Reus can't write good novella.

With both books, everything felt...half-assed and rushed, quite frankly.

And before people get their panties jammed and cry, "But they are novellas!"

I say,

description

I have read a TON of fucking novellas in my time.
And I KNOW they can be done right and done well.

Characters can still be fully fleshed out.
Plots can still be solid.
Scenes can feel smooth and finished.

But, alas, such was not the case with this one.

Scenes I had looked forward to, scenes which should have packed some major feels-punch, felt harried and without finesse...like their writing was a check mark on the to-do list of a proverbial book outline and not given their true diligence.

In fact, these last two series installments make me question whether or not I will continue with the series after this...although I really want to read Cynara's book (which I am hoping is next).

Something to ponder...

Still love Katie Reus...just not impressed by her short game.

Lots of parallel stories in this short novel about all the supernatural beings of the “Darkness” series. The dragons, the vampires, the wolves, the demons, the demigods, the hybrids are about to celebrate Christmas, but at the same time they have their personal issues to sort out.

Still the focus of the book is Petronilla dragon clan and more specifically the pregnancy of Victoria. Will she finally have her baby without complications? The story of wolf shifter Victoria and dragon shifter Drake started in book “Taste of Darkness”.

Obviously this book is not a standalone, but if you are a series' fan, you will love to catch up with your favourite characters – especially in their Christmassy mood.

5 - "Fucking perfection." Stars!

Aww, a lovely little Christmas check-in with a large number of the Darkness characters (old & new) around the pending delivery of Drake and Victoria’s first child.

"Are we going to have a Christmas baby after all..?"

I love this series, so to be able to catch up with so many of the characters from previous books as well as be teased by the author about potential stories to come for newer characters in the future was a really great way to spend a couple of hours.

Pack or clan, they took care of each other.

You really do need to have read the previous books in the series to get anything from A Very Dragon Christmas because you will have absolutely no idea who is who and what is going on otherwise. But for a stalwart of the series like myself it just left me with a smile on my face.

I cannot wait to see what Katie has in store for the Petronella Clan and associates in 2019.

What a fun novella! I would not recommend reading this until you've read the previous book in the series. This is more of an epilogue book with all the previous couples. We get a glimpse into their lives a few years later and with a few baby's in the picture.

I just done a complete re-read of this series in readiness for Darkness Rising. So it’s safe to say I love this series and all the characters.

This book wasn’t out last time I read the series so this was my first time. And I’m sorry to say it wasn’t the book I’d expected.

It just felt like something was missing. It’s only 76 pages long and it catches up with all the characters. And I should have loved it but...

I don’t know, it felt at times more like bullet points. I know this is maybe unfair but it needed filler. It lacked something. It was almost as if the author had a list of characters wrote a bit on each one and then ticked them off. I needed more.

A Christmas novella was a good idea. A seasonal catch-up with all my favourites but for me it just didn’t work.

5 ‘Dragon/Darkness PERFECT Christmas’ Gift’ Stars

The perfect little holiday novella, with all of my fav Darkness gang, and to top it off focused on my all time fav couple of the series, Victoria and DRAKE!!! The sweetest and most captivating of PNR novellas!

This story was so much more than I expected, and I ADORED it! I was surprised, in the best of ways, that we got to revisit all the previous – and much beloved – Darkness couples. Checking in with all the gang as well as the fantastic Arya and Dragos was beyond amazing, and all of the little tales being intertwined and focus with my FAV Darkness couple, Victoria and my beloved Drake (if you haven’t yet read these two’s story, you NEED to. STAT!) and the birth of their baby was TOP. Truly the perfect Darkness gift.

Perfect holiday season (or any season at all really, lol) little read that will make you fall for all these characters and become addicted to all things Darkness. Perfect little holiday gift, in every way, and what a way to celebrate the opening of Christmas season. Two of my favorite things combined: Christmas and Darkness!!! <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

I loved this little something special this author created for her fans of the Darkness series!

As Christmas is approaching, Victoria is miserable in her thirteenth month of pregnancy. Many friends and family members are gathering to help celebrate the holiday as well as hoping she will soon give birth. However, her mate is hiding something from her which is adding to her already cranky mood. Fortunately the clan healer forces everyone to stay away so she can rest and take some time out just for herself and her mate.

As everyone comes together we are given a look into what these characters are currently up to or will possibly soon be embroiled with. I loved seeing all the alpha protectiveness of the heroes as well as the snarky, fun and engaging strength of the heroines that I’ve loved throughout this series. This was like one amazing epilogue to their stories as well as a bit of a lead in to hopefully new stories in the future.

For anyone who has read and enjoyed the Darkness Series, this will make a great holiday read!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Aside from a small slice of drama for Victoria and Drake’s pregnancy, this cute holiday novella had humor, love, friendship, and (I am hoping!!) possible hints of the next couple to get their story!

Super fun and cute novella. Everything I wanted to know about some of my favorite characters were somehow put together in just a few pages and it worked perfectly! I loved the interactions of everyone, especially the 3 powerful dragon female shifters.
I wouldn't recommend it reading it if you haven't read the rest of the series but if you have this is like a complementary story if you want to keep updated on some pretty awesome, sexy shifters.

REVIEW
I was beyond excited when I heard we were getting more Darkness. I love this series by this author. And then for it to be a holiday celebration of sorts is just the icing on the cake.

Usually, easygoing/ and loving Victoria is not quite herself, she is tired of being pregnant, everyone and everything annoys her. And add to it all? Everyone is coming to celebrate, so she has to deal with those who haven't seen her in quite awhile. What does this typically level-headed female do? She runs away...

All dragons on deck, and maybe a few more matings in the future? Grab your copy if you love this series it's a don't miss.

Ms. Reus’s Darkness world. While the centerpiece of the book is the birth of Victoria and Drake’s hybrid shifter child, equal page time is given to the dozens of characters encountered over the course of eight stories.

Primarily set in Montana among the Petronilla dragon clan, readers learn that poor Victoria has been pregnant for nearly 13 months, and in addition to her discomfort and raging hormones, she’s dealing with an overly-attentive mother-in-law. There are some bumps and scary moments, but the birth of the baby is a happy occasion.

While I enjoyed also spending time and catching up with the other couples and characters from the series, the short chapters jumped from couple to couple, person to person, giving the book a “snippet” or “slice of life” feel. The book was choppy at times, and I would have preferred a more linear storyline, with fewer side stories and more focus on the baby plot. I did enjoy getting a glimpse as to future books/plots, and I am looking forward to the next Darkness tale.

Oh boy, absolutely love this series! The characters are all kick@ss and bad@ss too 😍 Victoria is pregnant and coming to the end of “the longest pregnancy” ever, according to her 😂. Drake’s family is overprotective and overdoing it to the point Victoria is fed up and seeks Dragos out to help her!

Returning old favourites come together for Victoria’s imminent baby’s birth and to all spend Christmas together. I can see a few new future couples in this series.....and I cannot wait for them to eventuate.

Thank you Katie for my advanced copy for which I leave my honest review voluntarily, while I eagerly await more in this series and your others!

••••••••••

REVIEW: A VERY DRAGON CHRISTMAS is a holiday novella in Katie Reus’ contemporary, adult DARKNESS paranormal, romance series.

Told from several third person perspectives A VERY DRAGON CHRISTMAS follows numerous paths including the impending birth of Victoria (wolf shifter) and Drake (dragon shifter) Petronilla’s (Taste of Darkness #2) first child. Nearing the end of her fifteen month pregnancy Victoria’s in-laws hover too closely pushing a frustrated Drake to ban his family from upsetting his mate. As the days grow closer to Christmas Victoria’s hormones taking over as she expects another billion months on her back before giving birth. As the supernatural community prepare for the holidays, Victoria and Drake face an uphill battle with the birth of their child.

Katie Reus brings a bit of holiday magic to the Dragons of the Petronilla Clan. We get a quick glimpse into the lives of the couples we have previously met, and the potential for a few more relationships on the horizon. A gathering for Christmas, as they await the birth of Victoria and Drake’s child, the shifter, vampires, demi-gods and demons celebrate the holidays, one relationship at a time. A sweet and endearing story line Katie Reus adds another entertaining instalment in the world of the Darkness.

What a fabulous visit with the Petronilla clan and Darkness series crew! Victoria and Drake are awaiting the birth of their son, the first wolf-dragon hybrid. Anxious family members are driving Victoria nuts with their overprotective nature, friends are in town for the holidays and the birth, and thus nonstop laughter ensues.

I’m excited to see what comes next in this series with Gabriel and Vega’s adventure, and the new wolf alphas. The Darkness series is one of my favorites. If you are a fan of the series, A Very Dragon Christmas is a must read!

My first thought on finishing A Very Dragon Christmas was 'Beautiful' my next thought was that's probably a little weird to think about a shifter story but you know what it was that good.

Katie Reus writes every book exceptionally well but I have to say her Darkness series will always be my favourite they way she writes in this shifter world of hers is beyond amazing and something I just love to lose myself in.

I do think it was cruel to make Victoria's pregnancy go for 13 months lol but you know hybrid pregnancies are all going to be different right so some women are just going to have to go the distance more so than others but in the end, it was all worth it.

The gift of life and love

This little holiday companion to the darkness series is fantastic. It’s all about friends, family, and future connections. The author seamlessly incorporated some of my favorite characters into the gift of new life and the holidays. I enjoyed the gentleness of the story where the danger is only on the periphery and love is all around. You are going to want to be sure that you have read the previous books or you will be lost, but this is a novella you won’t want to miss.

I enjoyed this holiday novella. It gave me a chance to catch up with my favorite supernatural beings. Finally after an abnormally long pregnancy I get to be there as Victoria and Drake become parents. It was so much fun to see the clans gathered for Christmas. What a family get together. I had to smile as I enjoyed this groups over the top interaction. Katie Reus wrote a satisfying story. It was filled with romance, love and a taste of future adventures. I can't wait to see what happens next.

Posted on What I'm Reading

At the very beginning of A Very Dragon Christmas there is a warning that this isn't a standalone novella, and that's a true statement. If you haven't read any of the Darkness books go back and start with book one. This is one of the series you have to read from the first book. With that said, I think this is a fun little story that hits all the emotional points. Again, you can't start with this story, because a lot has happen.

Victoria and Drake are expecting there little guy, but he's taking his sweet little time. Yes, in the previous books she has been pregnant. He finally decides to come. Poor Victoria. There are hints of more things too happen, and I can't wait for them. I need them. Anyway, things happen in the story that you are like NOOOO!

Overall, it's a nice little holiday piece. It tidies up Victoria's pregnancy, and we might eventually see more having baby fever. A Very Dragon Christmas also gives a glimpse of things to come. Again, I can't say anymore, because you have to read the previous stories to understand the intricate details. If you have been keeping up with the series, this is a good one.

Review:

I am not going to give away a lot in this review because this is a very short, quick read. I will say that if you have read this series, it is a perfect little present to catch up on some favorite characters. That being said, if you have not read the series yet, this is not the story to start with. I recommend starting with the beginning of the series and reading forward each story is short in length and would take no time to catch up before reading this.

If you have read this Author before, you will not be disappointed as this like her other works are well-written, sexy and very engaging.

Drake and Victoria are finally having their baby! If you read Sentinel of Darkness, the eighth book in this series, you found out that she was pregnant. In this book, it's show time.

It's Christmas in Montana and everybody is there. I loved seeing these characters again. Some of them I didn't remember, but enough information was given that I remembered their stories. I read a lot of books and can't remember every character, but I've never forgotten Drake. He touched my heart like few other characters ever have. He is my all-time favorite dragon.

Everybody had their own thing going on, but their biggest reason was to be there for the birth of Drake and Victoria's child, another shifter. It was a monumental event for all. There were a few touch-and-go moments, but it was a relaxing, fun read. It was like getting caught up with old friends.

In the blurb, it says that this is not meant to be stand-alone novel. Trust what it says. I wouldn't have enjoyed it nearly as much as I did if I hadn't read the previous books in the series.

Victoria is about to have a baby. But its not just any baby but a wolf-dragon hybrid baby!! And she has mother in law issues- her mother in law is WAY overprotective and doesn't give her a moment's peace. Drake saw his mate was going nuts and was super overwhelmed but he didn't know what to do to help her. Its Christmas time in this book and we get to see previous characters pop in and we see how they are doing since their book. Its a great novella where Drake and Victoria are getting ready for the birth of their baby. This bok was 1 of surprises, hot scenes, some drama, tons of love, beautiful friendships, true mates and it was over before I was ready for the story to end. All I can say is I can't wait to more.

You will need to read the other stories before you read this one.

This story is primarily about Drake and Victoria and the birth of their baby. BUT, you catch up with almost everyone else in the series.

Victoria has been pregnant FOREVER. Her hybrid baby is taking longer than a wolf or dragon would to be born. She's taking it all in stride, but the over protectiveness of her Mother In Law has gotten to be too much and sends the Mommy to her bed because of too much stress. Suddenly the baby decides to come into the world, which shocks Victoria's system into a coma. While everyone waits for Victoria to have her baby and wake up, we catch up with all of our favorite characters.

Seeing how everyone is and meeting little Phoenix is a great Christmas present for readers.

This novella is one all readers of this series will enjoy. I would definitely recommend it after reading the previous books in the series. This short read is one full of family and friends during the Christmas holiday. It had all of my favorite characters from the previous books and I was so happy to read more of Bo and Nyx's family. They were definitely one of my favorites from the previous books. However, I also love Victoria and Drake. This read was one of sweet surprises, steamy scenes, a bit of drama, love, friendships, mates and it ended before I was ready for it to end. I can't wait to read more.

I so enjoyed this novella set in the Darkness world. Although the focus is on Victoria's pending delivery, the readers get to catch up on past couples, present singles, and potential pairings. With a baby on the way, we see how this affects many of the other characters and how much they have grown since their own individual books. For those characters who have not found their "one" or "ones????", we get to catch up with what is going on in their lives as well. A really good transition between full length novels.
