Although his friends Owl, Rabbit and Squirrel warn him about the coming winter, Fox is too busy enjoying summer and autumn to do anything to prepare for that cold season. Then, when the snows come, he finds himself cold, hungry and lonely, as the other three have retreated to their carefully prepared homes. Realizing his mistake, Fox wishes he had done things differently, and he wishes for help. It is at that moment that a package falls from the sky, dropped by a mysterious reindeer-drawn sleigh flying by. Determined to share this largesse, Fox prepares a feast for his friends, after which he finally follows their advice, digging in for the winter...

As should be obvious, The Winter Fox is definitely not a naturalistic animal story, but rather, a tale of anthropomorphic creatures that would normally have a predator-prey relationship being friends, and having cozy adventures together. If one enjoys that sort of thing - I myself do, although I also appreciate more naturalistic animal fiction - then it will offer a pleasant reading experience. I didn't realize beforehand that it had a brief Christmas element, uncommented upon in the text, in the form of Santa's sleigh passing by, but that was a nice touch. The story offers an interesting remake of the classic Aesopian fable of The Grasshopper and the Ants , although here the carefree grasshopper (Fox) gets the chance to put right his mistake, thanks to Santa's magic. The accompanying artwork from Rebecca Harry, who also illustrated Jonathan Emmett's Foxes in the Snow , is colorful and cute, and enhanced by quite a bit of shiny glitter. Recommended to picture-book readers who enjoy cozy animal stories, especially ones featuring foxes.

This was adorable! I am a bit biased because I love foxes and stories with woodland animals. The illustrations are soft and tactile, with the silver foil really adding to the magical feel.
Fox is so busy playing that he forgets to get ready for the winter Luckily he has some friends to help!
This is a lovely story of friendship which could be enjoyed by children aged 3+ (if being read to them!)
I don't imagine that the story will hold up to repeated readings, but it would be the perfect book to snuggle up with on a cold evening.

A cute story, I worry about the message though, fox just happens to have everything work out for him even though he didnt put in the work. Does it send the right lesson to children? However had gorgeous illustrations and lovely for winter. Could use the fox as a talking point. Is it fair that he had everything at the end anyway or should he have listened?

Pikkukettu ei jaksa varautua talven tuloon kuten ystävänsä, vaan käyttää aikansa mieluummin leikkimiseen. Yllättäen kylmimmän talven tullessa Pikkuketulla ei olekaan enää hauskaa. Onneksi hänen ystävänsä ovat valmiita auttamaan Pikkukettua hädän hetkellä!

Tämä kirja herättelee hissukseen ajattelemaan kuuntelemisen tärkeyttä.

Knapman, Timothy The Winter Fox. PICTURE BOOK. Illustrated by Rebecca Henry. Nosy Crow (Candlewick), 2017. $15.

Fox is so busy playing that he doesn’t have time to get ready for winter. When the first big snow hits, his friends are all snuggled up and warm, but Fox has no place to call home. A strange package from the sky gives him an idea and after a day of play, his friends help him figure out how to stay warm all winter.

The silver gilding on the pages make this book extra sparkly. It definitely helps that the story is well worth reading. There is no explanation about where the box comes from. But it could be fun to take a minute and make guesses with your friends.

This book tells the story of a fox and his friends journey to winter. The fox is focused on soaking in all the sun and warmth that summer has to offer. His friends on the other hand are busy preparing for the cold winter. When winter comes around, the fox is left out in the cold by himself. He wishes that he had listened to his friends and prepared better for the cold. He leaves them all gifts and hosts them for a fun afternoon full of lunch and ice skating. Afterwards, they all come together to help the fox through the winter. I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was a beautiful illustration of community. I also really liked the illustrations. Something about this book felt magical. I was invested in this story.
I would use this book in my classroom around the change of season from fall to winter. This book would be a great way to help my students understand why animals hibernate in the winter. I also think this book would be a good example of the importance of helping your neighbor. I think this book would be useful in my classroom some day.

The first thing to know about this book is how it's meant to be fancy. Ultra-ultra! With gilt foil shining on every picture spread.

* To some of my fellow Goodreaders, this will seem super-special
* To others, who cares?
* To this Goodreader, it's icky. What's next, tuck bribery chocolates into each picture spread, because children don't otherwise want to read?

ANYWAY, ONCE UPON A TIME THERE WAS A KID WHO LIKED TO PLAY

Ahem, it was a fox, actually. This fox has many friends, each one a different kind of animal.

These friends worry about him. It's nearly winter, and it's time he started getting ready!

Guess what? By winter Fox isn't ready.

OOH, WILL THIS TURN OUT TO BE A FANCY GIFT BOOK ABOUT NATURAL SELECTION?

Will there be realistic photos of a Fox starving to death and freezing to death? Nah, you just know there's going to be a happy ending, even a sappy ending.

Still, I'm reviewing on behalf of the sort of reader this book was intended for, readers who like shiny pages and impossible fantasy endings. On their behalf, FIVE STARS.

This is a story about friendship and the winter behaviors of animals. It is a feel-good story with very little conflict and comforting illustrations. I especially appreciated the silver accents on each page.

A familiar story about a fox who plays rather than preparing for the winter is embellished with silver gilding throughout the illustrations. The illustrations are whimsical and charming, and they elevate this simple tale into a book worth sharing with children.

A bit sappy, but kids will like the silver foil in the illustrations and the happy woodland creatures. Subtle appearance by Santa. Ages 3-5.
