If you are looking for gentle romps through the flowers, with lovers holding hands and never making mistakes, then my books are not for you.

I don't write heroes or heroines, I write people with baggage, history and problems. My characters are flawed, they're messy, they make disastrous mistakes that are hard to come back from. My stories are not sweet or kind, they are dark and, at times, cruel. They deal with uncomfortable subjects and I do not apologise for it.

If you like plot twists, characters you don't think you'll ever grow to love but eventually do, sarcasm, dark paths and messy relationships, then come on in. The water may be deep and shark-infested, but I know the way out ...I promise.

DNF at 28%

Things started not too bad, but then it just got worse with each chapter. I stopped at 27% because I just couldn’t take it anymore.

First, Cassie finds out that her boyfriend is cheating on her with her roommate because she walks in on them doing it on the kitchen table, she then runs to her family home, only to remember that it is not their home anymore because her mom sold it 6 months ago after Cassie’s father died. Cassie decides to go into the house anyway since she knows where a key is hidden, and when she hears the shower running, she goes into the bedroom because she can’t help but hope that it might be her dead father? Not in the sense that she believes in ghosts, but she just wasn’t rational at that time I guess… Then there is the awkward encounter with a very naked Shaun, and from there, it becomes insta-lust, insta-trust, and insta-banter that just fell flat and lacked real chemistry.

Then there is the posturing between Shaun and Cassie’s ex, and for some reason, her ex keeps on telling everyone that it’s just a misunderstanding between them and that Shaun is trying to “steal his girlfriend”… I mean, all it would take is for Cassie to tell people what happened for his story to fall apart, but that didn’t occur to him I guess.

**Minor spoiler in the next paragraph**
And then… there is the WTF part where we learn that Sam (Cassie’s ex) had been seeing Rebekah (Cassie’s roommate) before he started going out with Cassie, and that Cassie was the “affair” in this story, not the other way around. That Rebekah and Sam had an open relationship for years and that Rebekah got off listening to him and Cassie having sex? WTF is happening here? Where did that come from?

Cassie is too insecure, due to verbal abuse from her ex-boyfriend most likely, but instead of having me empathize with her, it was just really annoying. Honestly, besides her insecurities and stupid and impulsive decisions, there is not much to define her. Just as an example, Shaun kissed her when she was not expecting it, and a part of him regretted it because he wanted to keep her away, but she followed him to his home to ask him if the kiss was good and started crying when he got confused and didn’t start telling her how wonderful she was at kissing. She then asked him to kiss her again, which confused him, and she got upset that he didn’t want to kiss her because it was obviously proof that she was a bad kisser. That’s how insecure she is.

Shaun is the typical alpha male who feels the urge to help the damsel in distress but is also being a jerk part-time because he wants he to stay away from him for her own good. He was also uni-dimensional and boring.

3.5 steamy STARS ★★★✬✩
This book is for you if… you’re in search for some easy, mindless fun with plenty of hot scenes to inspire our (single) sexy time.

Overall.
First of all, the sex scenes were so steamy I was embarrassed listening to them once or twice.

So in short, this is a really great book to keep you company without being too heavy - escapism material at its finest. The whole shapeshifter narrative is just the cherry on top. It's no secret I'm kinda into them wolfish dudes (thanks, Nalini) so bias cannot be excluded.

Another theme I enjoyed was that of relationship trauma - as much as one can enjoy such topics. It's not uncommon people emerge from relationships with plenty of baggage - being finetuned to / manipulate to serve the needs of the partner. You can't simply shed that after being mentally abused for years. It was interesting how Cassie relearned healthy relationship behaviour and how Shaun adjusted to the special needs of his woman.

In total, I feel like if the author had maybe substituted one or two sex scenes for some relationship building, she could have made the novel a lot stronger. And that terrible nickname Shaun used for Cassie - Goldilocks - gave me chills of the negative sort.

Apart from that, this is a decent read - as I said, of the lighter kind - that offers an interesting but vaguely familiar take on the shapeshifter pack narrative.

What’s happening.
After Cassie finds her boyfriend balls deep in her roommate, she is eager to escape the triggering town she lives in and comes across a rather good distraction; Shaun. They feel an instant attraction towards each other, not knowthing that the intensification of their relationship brings with it the opportunity for an outsider to finally get at the midnight pack - a pack of wolf shapeshifters, with Shaun in the top ranks of the hierarchy.

With his pack/family relocating to a quiet town, shifter Shaun Jacobs comes ahead to sort things out and because the city holds nothing but unease and pain for him, what he doesn’t expect doesn’t expect to be drawn to human Cassie, who first meets Shaun after she sees her roommate and douchebag of a boyfriend - Sam going at it and needing to escape - runs to what used to be her family home, but is now owned by Shaun’s pack. There attraction is instant, but danger is coming, and it puts everything under threat – for Shaun, his pack and the woman he has claimed as his own.

The interactions and bickering between Cassie’s sister Gemma and Shaun’s brother were amusing.
I hope the Hunters meet a truly gruesome end, what they have been doing is horrible.

A surprisingly enjoyable read. Book 2 already acquired via KU.

Audio Read.

Cassie finds out her now ex-boyfriend isn’t who she thought he was. She goes to her childhood home for comfort forgetting her mum sold the property. When she meets Shaun the heat is turned up a few notches.

Shaun is trying to get his life back on track. He’s a shifter wolf with a rocky past. When Cassie stumbles into his life he feels protective of her even though she’s fresh out of a relationship.

This book has quite a lot going on. It’s an enjoyable read which keeps you guessing. The shifter details are unique in some ways. They fit well with the story. The romance is heated and primal. Shaun and Cassie have good chemistry. I also liked the side characters. The overall story is interesting and has a few twists.

Can Shaun overcome his past? Can Cassie embrace her destiny?

It took me a while to get used to the narrator but I didn’t mind his voice.

*I received an ARC with no obligation to review but I review most things.

How much fun was that! Midnight Touch was an absolute blast to read.

This is my third book from L. Ann but her first solo book and I got to tell you, I've come to love her writing style. It's fast paced with lots of action, suspense and steamy romance but It's her snappy dialog that will keep me coming back for more. The quick witted levity is one of the defining points of the writing that makes this story and these characters shine.

Midnight Touch is a PNR with a contemporary romance feel. Those readers who shy away from PNR because of technical world building that can quickly become overwhelming, often requiring diagrams and glossaries to keep track of it all, might find that this is a PNR that will satisfy. The world building has a more natural feel that stays organic to the story and is easy to follow. The focus is on the characters and their story with a suspenseful mystery brewing in the backdrop.

As soon as I finished, I wanted more and from the looks of it, I'm going to get it. Their is a number of great side characters that have a story to be told and a villain that has caught my attention.

So why not 5 stars? Simply because I feel their is more depth to come and being the first in a series, I know this is just the start.

This one was more then i expected and funner then it should have been given how heavy it got. What i assumed would be a boy meets girl, boy turns out to be a furry, pair falls in love story ended up being so much more. Yes boy does meet girl and sparks fly. But we also have a whole world opening up around them, we have boy and girl having to heal and fight and grow. Its sexy and funny and totally worth the effort of getting into a new series. I will for sure be continuing with the series.

Intro to series with growly males, angsty women and mutual rescues. The needy H is in recovery, depends on his h who I thought was weak and easily influenced by others. Lots of tropes in his book sets the scene for more rescues.

The Midnight Pack have left their pack mark on my heart. Shaun, Deacon, Cormac, Asher, Jaden....all of them

******
Overall Rating: 5 tears were shed stars
Kindle Unlimited: Yes
Standalone: Yes / No. This is a story about one couple but there is an underlying story to the series
Steam: 3 crazy wolf claiming flames
Triggers: There are numerous triggers in this book / some off page implied
******
Shaun has been to hell and back, but he survived what would have killed most. Now he is headed to a rural town to start setting up the new Sanctuary for the Pack. He needs this, he needs the fresh air, he needs to clear his thoughts. He needs a fresh start...it just so happens he is about to get his fresh start...in Cassie's childhood home.

Cassie's father died recently, her mother has sold their childhood home, and now...Cassie has just walked in on her boyfriend of two years screwing her roommate on the kitchen table... Cassie runs out of the apartment and goes to the only place she can think of...her old childhood home.

Cassie just needs to escape, thinking the house is empty, she finds the hidden key... what she doesn't expect to find is a hot man in the shower....

From here things only get better! I was surprised that I instantly fell for Shaun, hated Sam, and liked Cassi. These characters are not one dimensional either, you truly get a feel for them, their pain, trauma, hurt etc. This is not your typical shifter romance, this book puts hunters versus shifters, and someone very evil trying to get to the Midnight Pack. This hunter, is not playing by the regular playbook. Blood will be spilled, wills will be tested, and people will get hurt.

This book will keep you guessing, who is the bad guy, why are they targeting the Midnight Pack, what will happen to the pack? Will everyone survive? Who will go through hell? This book will keep you reading well into the night.

The chemistry between Cassie and Shaun is HOTT! But their road to an HEA is going to be riddled with trouble. Your heart will break, you will cheer, and tears will probably be shed. No one is safe...Warning: There are dark themes in this book.

This was a unique story, without the usual tropes. I love unique and fresh, but of course that comes with a price sometimes....and that price may be a theme that forces you to step outside your comfort zone! There are some tough topics, and L. Ann, will take your comfort zone and obliterate. I personally think she feeds off crushing our comfort zones.

You will fall in love with the secondary characters were just great too. I am going to be honest, I have already read the entire series because I fell for the secondary characters as much as the Main Characters. Deacon is a comedian and had me cracking up...but there is also much more to him.

And Mac, is just wow! So what are you going to do? Keep reading reviews? No, pick up this book and start the series before the Midnight Run comes out!!! If you love shifters with hearts and are devoted to their mates….this is so your book!!! Fully recommend!

Alpha mate 4.5 stars

Holy mother of shifter. Midnight Touch by L. Ann was just want I needed to get me over my book funk. The story is has the right mix of intrigue and sexiness to keep me rooted.

When a shifter moves to a quiet town, little does he know that life as he knew it was about to change. Shaun Jacob has had a touch year. Moving to a new town to build a sanctuary for his family was the only thing that would keep him from his nightmares. Then he meets Cassie. The young woman who fascinated him. Her pull made his wolf come out to play.

But her being normal and him being a shifter did not bode well for them. Little does Cassie know when she first meets Shaun that her world was never going to change.

As fate would have it, their being together was moot point when she ends up almost dying. Shaun's past comes back to haunt him, bringing in old memories as well as trying to destroy his future with Cassie.

Will Shaun win his mate's heart or will the evil that chases him destroy his one true love!!! 1-click Midnight Touch right now to get your sweet dose of shifter romance.

I will always be the first to say when I'm wrong, and boy was I! Before reading this I would always say paranormal books aren't really my thing. Vampires being the exception. But that was ONLY because I hadn't read this! Or if I'm honest found this Author. She has a way of writing the story that although shifters aren't real you do find yourself thinking, wellllll...maybe they are lol. And did I mention this is a series. So yeah, I get more books to be proven wrong once again. I love when that happens😉.

5/5 - Wolf-shifter x human... romance. This book got me out of my funk.

First book in a long time that makes me want to binge the whole series. The characters and story are so good. Plot twists, sexy times.

Shaun is the perfect protective and sexy af alpha shifter.

Cassie is totally relatable as a heroine. She doesn’t make a run for it when she learns the truth but has fear and questions.

The supporting characters round the story out.

I CANNOT WAIT FOR DEACON X GEMMA! Book 2.

I judged this book by the cover - and was pleasantly surprised.

The author took the time to introduce us to the world and its rules. Cassie finds out Shaun is a Shifter only about halfway into the book and takes it seriously. She's not like "Whatever" as many paranormal romance heroines are.

Midnight Touch had an actual plot and stakes were high - it didn't all revolve around the hero and heroine. Other characters were also at risk and this made the book interesting.

It wasn't perfect, though:

- I wish there was more time to discover Shaun's character.

- I wasn't into the heroine - she's the doormat kind. She's fresh out of a break-up when we first meet her. She describes their relationship retrospectively and it puzzled me. She dated this dude for 2 years or so, they didn't live together, weren't married, didn't have kids or any property in common, she was fully financially independent. So he had no hold over her. She says she didn't love him and their relationship always felt off. So why did she drop her whole career, dreams and took a generic clerk job for him? Why did she listen to his criticisms and kept giving up all her personality, tastes, and interests for him? This made absolutely no sense to me. It felt like an excuse to milk sympathy out of the reader.

She meets Shaun and keeps apologizing all the time - when she's in the wrong and when she isn't.
Are we supposed to think it makes her the sweet unfairly treated cutie? To me it said that apologies are meaningless to her, carry no value, so she spews them at random in the hopes it will gain her favor out of pity.

- I wished we got to see a little more of Shaun and Cassie's relationship when things calmed down in the Shifter/Hunter department.

In any case, the book was pretty enjoyable. I didn't really plan to keep reading the series, but this first installment made me interested enough.

I listened to this one in Audible. Short and sweet, this was sexy and captivating. I don’t have a great deal of experience with romance novels, but I’ve been picking them up more, and honestly enjoying some smuttiness. I mean, lets just be real here. If you’ve read Fifty Shades of Grey, which I somewhat ashamed to say that I have, this reminds me of that… but WAAAAAAAY better. The writing is better, the characters are better, the story is compelling. There is a lot of sex, but somehow it doesn’t feel like the focus of book.

I really, really like Shaun. It’s not just that he’s got a hot body, but his confidence and charisma are palpable. It would be hard not to notice a man like that on that street, and he feels authentic. A rare breed of man, but not extinct. Part of what sets him apart from characters like Christian Grey, for example, is that while he is plenty horny, it’s not all about sex with him. He really does care about Cassie and he’s not actually interested in controlling her every move. He allows her independence and does his best to bolster her confidence rather than doing everything he can to make her dependent on him. Making it a weirdly healthy relationship… or at least more healthy than a lot of other Romance Genre relationships I’ve read. Heck even non-romance genre relationships!

I don’t super love Cassie. I hope I’ll like her more as the series progresses, because I’m definitely going to be getting the next one (yes please!). I’m hoping that she finds herself and becomes a stronger person, and more likable. She was really very weak throughout, and almost a little irritating.

I really enjoyed the supporting characters as well. I'm eager to get more of them in the future and see how their relationships develop. There are other female characters here that are very strong, and captivating. I think they'll definitely play a major roll in Cassie coming into her own. And I loved hating Sam. I can't wait to see that guy get what's coming to him.

Here is what I didn’t love about the book overall. Lots of swearing. I’m not really into that. I love a good f-bomb from time to time, but there was way more of that in this than was appreciable. Also, I really kinda hated the narration. I give it a 3 star rank because it’s well read… if it’s just being read straight. I mean, I have more inflection when I’m reading a book just in my head.

There is next to zero differentiation between the sound and feel of each character, and he is really bad at changing his pace and inflection to suit what is happening in the text. He’s a good reader, but clearly not an actor. I can think of several better people for a novel like this. I think he would be great for a non-fiction book, where you really do just have to read the text, but if there is a plot and characters, he should maybe not do those ones. His narration didn't prevent me from enjoying the book, but it did detract.

So, in conclusion, there is a lot of hot sexy time in this novel, but there is actually real story here as well. The characters are compelling, and engaging, and you want to know more about them and see them succeed. I really enjoyed it over all and am very much looking forward to the next part of the story.

Midnight touch was excellent!!!
I loved Shaun and his alpha sexiness.
The way he claims Cassie is so hot I could feel the heat coming off my kindle.
The story is great with a lot of parts you kind of think, what’s going on there and you know we will have to wait for future books to discover those little gems.
I really love it when authors do this.
This book has hot alpha shifters and bold heroines but this is no run of the mill shifter book as it has a great plot, full of action and has definitely more hotness.

Side note. I’ve just listened to this on audible. It was awesome. The narrator Mike Peterman was amazing 😉

i really enjoy the whole alpha/mate bond that comes with stories about werewolves and this was no exception. the only reason i didnt enjoy this more was because the pacing felt too rushed when it came to cassie and shaun and the world-building left much to be desired as some elements were left unresolved. i know this is the first in the series, but the other books focus on other brothers, so im not sure how loose ends will be tied up. but other than that, this was quick mindless entertainment.

"Is that why you kissed me? To make him jealous?"
"No, Goldilocks, I kissed you because I'm the big bad wolf and you needed a warning to stay out of my forest."

I am howling at the moon over this one! What a great read!! Wolf shifters are so sexy, and that whole "claiming my mate" thing? Holy Hannah that's hot!!

Cassie Duncan's life is turning upside down. Her father is dead. Her mother has sold the family home and has left town. And, now,she just caught her boyfriend, well, her now EX-boyfriend, with her roommate. She just needs something to go right. Maybe the tall, tattooed, stranger who now occupies her family home can turn things around. There is an inexplicable draw between them. Something is pulling her to him and she doesn't understand. When tragedy strikes, and her life is threatened, she will soon find out that there are secrets that will change her life forever. Secrets about Shaun that will make her want to run. Secrets about herself that will make her question her very existence. Is her entire life a lie? But, someone is targeting her - or is he the target? Until they figure it out, they are all in danger and time is running out.

Shaun Jacobs is setting up the pack's new sanctuary - getting it ready for their arrival. But, the first to arrive is a blond beauty who just broke in to his new home. What is it about her that is drawing him to her? He has a need to claim this human as his mate - to protect her. When her life is threatened, and his pack is targeted, will they be able to figure out who is behind it? Is it a Hunter or someone - or something -else? Secrets will be revealed that will change everything. The question is - who will survive?

I loved Shaun and Cassie's story. Shaun is beautifully alpha, and I totally understood Cassie's desire to lick those tattoos! I never guessed the secrets that would come out, or who was behind the attacks! Love the pack and I can't wait to see what happens with Deacon and Gemma, or Cormac and Isabella (there's a story there for sure!). If you love PNR, you will love this one! Can't wait for the next book in the series!

Now, I've read A LOT of shifter romance books and honestly, many of them fall short. They concentrate predominantly on the romance and the mate bond and there's rarely any real substance to the story.

Midnight Touch is the exception!

While Shaun and Cassie's romance is electrifying and you can't help but become invested in their relationship, the underlying story connecting everything together is what pulls you into their world and keeps you there.

With her previous co-authored books we've come to expect action, drama and fantastically written characters from L.Ann and she doesn't disappoint. Her debut venture into solo authordom (yes, that's a word, maybe) is a roaring success!

Really pleasantly surprised by this book in terms of a shifter series. It got me excited to read the next one which I am currently. I didn’t love there wasn’t a ton of resolution with the main characters but I like how their story is continuing to some extent in book 2 even though the focus is now on Gemma and Deacon. I’m gonna keep reading this series for sure.

I may need to eat my own words “I don’t like books with shifters.” Not sure if L. Ann has magical powers or if she is such a good writer that she made me stop thinking about the wolves as something surreal. I found myself pleading with Cassie to forgive Shaun and give him a chance. The storyline was captivating and the characters were very entertaining. This book was like nothing I’ve ever read before and I’m so happy I took a chance to read something out of my comfort zone.

The pack is relocating to a small country community and Shaun has been put in charge of readying the new sanctuary. Imagine his surprise when he finds a girl in his bedroom and her scent is intoxicating. He wants her, but what about his wolf? Her ex has done a number on her, all of her self confidence is gone, she apologises when she has done nothing wrong. Shaun soon has her in his palm, but she has him making rash decisions.

Cassie just found her boyfriend in a compromising position with her flatmate. She flees and runs into the arms of the new owner of her family home. Did I mention he was naked and wet? There is something about him that she can’t deny, he has a spectacular body and she is captivated by his tattoos. Her ex is not taking the breakup lightly, he publicly blames Shaun for coming between them. Things become serious when she’s involved in an accident and agrees to Shaun’s terms, but he hasn’t been totally upfront with her.
