‘Johnny had not believed that they would ever reach Tripoli.’

Desmond Cory is a pseudonym used by British mystery/thriller writer Shaun Lloyd McCarthy (Lancing, Sussex, 1928 -2001). Cory was educated at Steyning Grammar School, and after serving as a commando in the Royal Marines immediately after World War II, he studied English literature at St Peter's College, Oxford, graduating with Honours in 1951. He pursued an academic and literary career for the next forty-five years, and in 1976 was awarded a Ph. D. from the University of Cardiff, Wales. Starting as a freelance writer, he moved in 1953 to Cordoba, Spain, where he served as a technical translator and began teaching for the Academia Britannica. Cory taught throughout most of his life, first at the University of Cardiff, and then enjoyed a series of associate professorships of English Literature in Arabic-speaking countries, leaving the Arabian Gulf in 1990 to take up a university position in Famagusta, Cyprus. Despite his very busy professional life as an academic, Cory was a prolific writer whose work evolved and matured throughout the years, culminating in The Dobie Trilogy published between 1991 and 1993. Cory’s earlier works include the Johnny Fedora Espionage Spy Thrillers of which there are six volumes. HIGH REQUIEM is the final volume Book 6

The Brits have long held the preeminent position as the finest mystery writers and Desmond Cory most assured is a part of the heritage. This novel challenges the imagination as well as the intellect while bowing deeply to that inimitable British wit. Cory wrote his own synopsis of this last episode – ‘A beautiful woman trapped into spying for the enemy, A hunted fugitive wanted for multiple murder. A mysterious explosion in the middle of the African desert. A man carrying a live time bomb inside his body. Together they spelled out Johnny Fedora’s latest assignment. Somewhere on a tiny air base in the African desert, where the British Government was conducting a super-secret nuclear experiment, a saboteur was loose. Two men had already died. Now the killer let it be known that each step taken to perfect the fantastic new weapon would mean another victim. All Johnny Fedora had to do was set himself up as bait

Knowing the flavor of the plot may help the reader new to Cory's catalogue of books, but the real joy is in the unraveling of this story - a blend of mythology, academia, naughty sexual innuendoes, murder, mystery and biting wit. One can easily see that there could very well be a resurgence of admiration, respect and hunger for more Cory - especially now that his works have been made available in the Kindle format. Highly Recommended.

Love the Johnny Fedora series!

This is another great Johnny Fedora novel. It’s part of a series but it can easily be a stand alone book but at the same time it doesn’t miss a beat in the series. Based in the African Desert Johnny must make himself bait for a killer who is determined to sabotage the British governments secret nuclear experiment. True to form the book is full of mystery, thriller, British humor and sexual innuendos. This book will have you on the edge of your seat as it takes you through each new step of Johnnys newest exciting and deadly adventure. As always, the writing style is excellent with great imagery and plenty of colorful characters to get to know. If you’re looking for a new series full of quick and exciting reads this is the one I recommend above any of the other series I have read recently.

Johnny Fedora is back for another exciting episode

Johnny Fedora is one of my favorite series in the spy thriller and action adventure genres. The characters in this series are well developed and relateable on several levels. Desmond Cory is a great storyteller who can grab your attention and keep you turning the pages to find out where the new journey will take johnny and what he will have to do to survive and solve the problems presented to him. This new adventures takes place in the African desert where Johnny finds himself being the bait in a deadly game of cat and mouse as he tries to catch a killer who is trying to disrupt the British governments secret nuclear testing. Great story and fun journey. I'm looking forward to Johnny and his next adventure. A definite must read.

Less derring-do and more cerebral than previous outings for Fedora. Johnny is travelling north through Africa having hitched a lift in a rickety lorry driven by a former Spitfire pilot whose destination appears to be Italy via Tripoli. O’Brien is a complicated individual and has a history of previous shady dealings regarding an air transport business that was not altogether legal. Crossing the Sahara desert the lorry is hit by flying debris during a sudden Haboob (sand-storm). So far so “Biggles Flies South”. Both are injured and taken to a British military base where secret tests are being carried out on a nuclear-powered aeroplane. The tests are not going well to say the least and everyone is extremely sweaty. One expects John Mills to turn up in shorts. The suspense and the stultifying heat are palpable as Fedora learns more about O’Brien’s reprehensible past and bleak future from a former colleague. Fedora is really only our eyes and ears to the events that unfold and the ending is predictable but the journey is a respectable way to pass the time.

High Requiem: A Johnny Fedora Espionage Spy Thriller Assignment Book 6 by Desmond Cory is again another thrilling installment in this high flying series. With a fast pace, the solid plot, and plenty of action, Johnny Fedora is one the most interesting and indefatigable heroes out there. He finds himself in a untenable situation as he sets himself up as bait, and of course that is nothing new to this protagonist. There is action, mystery, British wit, sexual innuendo, and lots of intrigue to keep you interested to the very end of this fantastic novel. The story line unravels at a good pace, pulling you in along the way as you cheer on Johnny Fedora. Love this 6th addition to the series and highly recommend for a classically styled mystery that will satisfy even the most particular readers.

Supposedly spy catcher

Once again, not in line with th he first three books the last two were weird. The last book did not even seem to be about Johnny. In the last two rt2 here is no connection to being a spy or the first books, no co.tact with a boss or organization, no reason to be in Africa, no support, no mission. The previous book had a mission to find a certain scientist and or his notes. The last one nothing, the organization did not send help or funds. No mention of his girlfriend, friends, previous life, etc. How did he get to Africa, why did he go, what is his mission? Very disjointed and disappointing
