One blizzard. Two friends. Three days to fall in love.
Lifelong islander Brooke Kane doesn’t know what to do with her college degree, her dreams, or her future, but she knows better than to venture far from home when there’s a storm brewing. But a promise to check on Rose’s Red Door Inn prompts Brooke to venture out. By the time she arrives at the inn, the snow is knee-deep and visibility almost non-existent. She settles in to spend a few days alone at the inn until a familiar figure appears at the door.
Father Chuck O’Flannigan has never felt like a bigger fool. So focused on his recent decision to leave Prince Edward Island, he’s caught unaware by the blizzard while on a walk. He can only see the inn’s red door, a promise of safety. But when he discovers that Brooke—the only woman who could tempt him to stay on the island—is also taking refuge there, he knows he’s in trouble.
With Christmas only three days away, Brooke is determined that they’ll celebrate—even if it’s just the two of them. Happy to play Scrooge to her Tiny Tim, Chuck wiles away his hours dreaming of a return to Ireland—praying that God may have plans for him there. After all, God seems to have forgotten him in North Rustico. But as Brooke brings Christmas to life, her joy makes him wonder if God may not have forgotten him. In fact, God may have big plans for both of them—if they can only survive Christmas at the Red Door Inn.
Might have stayed up past midnight to finish this one. :) It’s a perfectly delightful Christmas story and I stayed fully invested in the story from beginning to end. It was also fun to get updates about each other the couples from previous books and what’s going on with them! I also enjoyed finally getting the explanation of why their church has a “father” for a preacher.
Spoiler warning about series: this is the final book in the series and may spoil you for several things that happen in the stories, so read at your hazard if you haven’t yet read the three others.
Christmas at the Red Door Inn was a delightful read! I loved Johnson's PEI Dreams series, so when I saw this new novella it right away got added to my must-read list. I'm very happy to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it and it did not disappoint.
The characters were authentic. I felt like you could tell that they both had feelings for each other, but were afraid of admitting it. I enjoyed the snowstorm aspect and how the Red Door was a beacon in the storm. I also loved her brother and how protective he was of her.
All in all, a very good read. I recommend it and hope for more books with these characters. :)

Really, is there anything better than Christmas at the inn? Just throwing this out there, but Christmas began in an inn—or rather the lack of one. One could argue that as an extension of the inn, the first Christmas did occur there. You know, on inn property and all that. I don’t know if Liz Johnson did that deliberately or not, but I just loved the tie-in with the original Christmas love story—God coming to earth as a man to save man from the mess we’d made of His earth and creation. In other words, His love for us.
And then there’s Prince Edward Island. The little town of Rustico. Am I the only one who hears that name, Rustico, in Colleen Dewhurst’s voice?
What could be better than Christmas after a snowstorm? It might be a chance to be alone and make Christmas special with just yourself. But making it special with the guy you’ve crushed on for years? With the guy you think doesn’t really get that you’re not a kid anymore? With that guy?
How about discovering that he’s not as immune as you think? That’d be cool. If it only happened.
Look, it’s a romance... a last chance romance.
We know it’s going to happen. The idea of it not happening—ridiculous. But how. How those barriers get torn down, how things get mixed up, how they get sorted again in what I'm calling a "last chance romance"—that’s the story here.
And Liz Johnson, in her usual masterful way, does it more than justice. She creates a magical setting and characters who grab your heart, hold it captive, and only lets it go when everything is completely resolved and all the happy heart, warm fuzzies have settled into place.
Fred Savage would ask Peter Falk if it was a “kissing book.” Columbo—I mean, Peter—would have to confess that yes, this is a kissing book. This is one of those books that kissing aficionados will adore. Those of us who like to skip the kisses… well… not so easy this time, I’m afraid.
Sorry.
Ms. Johnson weaves the story so closely with those kisses, that you’re trying to skip words rather than paragraphs or pages.
But it was worth the torture. Even for me. Because seriously, this might be my favorite Christmas book of the year. It combined a setting I know and love, with new characters who stole my heart, and gave me a true Christmas treat.
And it’s short enough that I can read it again. Just like I did the last book in the series. No joke.
Recommended for anyone who loves Christmas books, loves Liz Johnson’s story, loves a sweet romance, or even better, loves them all. And if you’re a huge fan of kisses, well, I’m calling these, “Stick-your-head-in-a-blizzard-kisses.” Pepper Basham lovers will get that.
Christmas at the Red Door Inn by Liz Johnson | Book Review
THE STORY | On this cold winter day, there are two things Brooke Kane doesn’t expect. The first is that she's stuck in a snowstorm she never anticipated. But here she is. While at the Red Door Inn (which is empty for the season) to fulfill a favor, she finds herself unable to get home. The second thing she doesn’t plan on is the arrival of their village pastor, Chuck O’ Flannigan.
While out on a walk, Chuck too is caught unaware by the sudden storm, and his only refuge is the Red Door Inn. Together, the pair prepares to wait out the storm complete with tinsel, and maybe even some mistletoe.
REVIEW | There is usually a few books each year that take me by surprise. This seasonal novella falls into this category. I had no idea Liz was writing a Christmas novella let alone one that went with her Prince Edward Island series. The surprise led me to immediately buy the ninety-nine cent story from Amazon.
Short though this story is (just under 70 pages), it’s adorable. Of course it doesn’t have the characterization (in terms of depth limited only by time) that a full length novel would, but it’s magical. The plot is one of those quintessential romantic-comedies of errors, and feels akin to a Hallmark Channel original. (Which we all know, I adore.) The pages rush by far too quickly as we’re caught up in this adventure and Brooke’s unrequited love. Or is it?
If you’ve previously enjoyed seasonal novellas or Liz’s earlier books, you’ll want to mark Christmas at the Red Door Inn as a “must read” on your shelf. In short, it’s the ideal read to snag on Amazon. The next order of business is a snow day when you can stay home to read over that next snowy weekend. It’s sure to give you all the feels and also features a pretty swoon-y “first kiss.” This review was originally posted on Finding Wonderland
I loved spending Christmas on Prince Edward Island in this story. It was fun premise with the characters getting snowed in at Red Door Inn. A sweet short Christmas novella that I really enjoyed!
This is a short and sweet novella, a lovely bite-sized story that is ideal to read in one sitting. Despite the lack of Christmas cheer in my house (decorations, I mean), I was in the mood for a Christmas story. I made some hot chocolate and snuggled up to read this and finished in less than an hour. It is connected to the Prince Edward Island Dreams series, but for me, works well as a standalone, although I have read the full-length books in the series. As long as you don't mind brief mentions of characters in those books, then not having read those shouldn't be an issue.
The characters have a believable back story as well, so while things might move fast in terms of the romance, it feels genuine and nothing goes beyond some swoony kisses. :) There's also lots of snow and some Christmas decorating and just all around Christmas coziness. Not a bad way to kick off my Christmas and holiday themed reads for this year.
What a cute really small Christmassy story. Almost everything about it was delightful. Lots of snow, getting stuck at a sweet inn, inventing ways to celebrate Christmas, and a gentle romance neither expected. Loved both main characters. Brooke is fun and sweet and caring and the kind of person you want to be friends with. Father Chuck has a wonderful heart and also gentle.
For my own records: The female lead (Brooke) was Justin's sister and Mama Kane's daughter from On Love's Gentle Shore of the Red Door series. Father Chuck was in several of the books, but was never romantically involved in any of them, so it was good to see him wrestle with his true feelings...finally!
Glad I picked it up. Topped this series perfectly.
CHRISTMAS AT THE RED DOOR INN was like a surprise Christmas present from one of my favorite contemporary romance novelists, Liz Johnson. Readers get to take a short, three day Christmas Vacation back to Prince Edward Island to visit the Red Door Inn while the owners are on a Christmas vacation of their own to sunny California.
Brooke is asked to check in on the inn during the holidays to make sure the pipes don't freeze, but she picked a bad day to do so. Or maybe the best day, as a blizzard causes white-out conditions and the local preacher gets caught out in it.
Both have been secretly in love with the other, but now he's resigned the church to go to Ireland. What bad timing!
I absolutely loved this short, surprise visit, and hope Ms. Johnson plans another for next year.
I am a verified buyer, no review required. All opinions are my own.
I loved everything about Liz Johnson’s PEI series, beginning with the infamous red door. It was wonderful to revisit the Island, and especially during the Christmas season. This short story contains all the charm and familiarity of the previous 3 books.
What happens when 2 people, who have held long term admiration for each other, but never shared that with another person, are snowed in together? The iconic Red Door Inn becomes the main stage once again as a winter storm rages outside.
Beautiful characters with tender souls must decide what matters most.
I received a complimentary eARC. This is my honest review.
'Sure the butterflies and kisses are fun. But love means choosing for care for him more than I care about getting my own way.'
Liz Johnson takes us back to Prince Edward Island with this absolutely delightful and precious novella featuring Brooke Kane and Father Chuck O'Flannagan. Father Chuck is actually not a father because his church is non-denominational, but it everyone persists in calling him that because it was Catholic many years ago. And he is leaving town. He just feels he is not doing any good with the congregation and has been asking God for help for so long, so he is heading back to his native Ireland to take another church.
Brooke Kane is keeping an eye on the Red Door Inn while the owners are out of town when a blizzard strikes and Father Chuck literally plows into the door. They are forced to stay in the inn until the weather clears. Both of them have been harboring feelings for each other for some time, but neither has said anything.
Liz Johnson has just outdone herself in this little short novella! I was captivated from the first page. It is incredibly precious and totally delightful. I know I said that already, but it was so sweet and fun to read. I enjoyed every single minute. Don't miss another trip back to PEI.
The Red Door Inn works its magic again! This is a sweet little Christmas treat for fans of the Prince Edward Island Dreams series. Or even just for fans of short’n’sweet Christmas romances, because you really don’t have to have read any of the other books in the series to enjoy this one.
Some people need a helpful nudge to get things moving in the right direction, and being snowed in together—and alone—at the Red Door Inn is a pretty definite nudge for Brooke and Chuck. A ten-year age gap has caused each to believe the other would only laugh at any suggestion of a romantic relationship between them, but their guards gradually lower as they work together to make a Christmas for themselves in spite of their situation. Really, it would be impossible for two hearts so ready to love each other not to overflow when given the chance, and the overflow is pretty sweet!
Of course, there’s a little catch, but I love the lesson Chuck learns here. How often do we pray to God with our own solution in mind, all the while missing the answer that’s right under our nose?
A sweet Christmas novella that hits all the right notes.
I received a copy of this novel from the author. This has not influenced the content of my review, which is my honest and unbiased opinion.
The author immediately swept me back to Prince Edward Island in the Christmas novella. It was a perfect read for me. This story is about Brooke Kane and Father Chuck O'Flannigan. Brooke's friends have left the island to celebrate the holidays and she is keeping an eye on the inn for them. The story opens as Brooke has braved the snow for one last check on the inn, unfortunately upon her arrival a blizzard hits with dangerous white out conditions. Brooke is a wonderful character and I immediately liked her. She lost her father when she was young and it seems she has yet to find her footing as an adult. She went away to college and returned still unsure of what she wants to do with her life. She helps out on the family farm, but is definitely ready for something different. Father Chuck arrived several years ago to the island and took over the parish with some wonderful ideas of how he was going to help the church grow, but that's not happened. The congregation, over the years, has dwindled and appears to not have an interest of time to put into helping the church flourish. As a result, Father Chuck has made the decision and taken steps necessary to return to Ireland and plans to inform the church after the holidays of his plans. When he lands on the inn's doorstep during the blizzard half frozen Brooke decides to to her best to take care of him. As each battle decisions about the future the one thing Brooke is convinced of is they must celebrate the season regardless of the weather. I truly loved this story. Both characters are very strong and well developed. I found each were much deeper than what I had first thought. The plot immediately pulled me in and held me. For me, this was a one sitting read as once I started it I couldn't put it down. This is a book I would recommend to anyone who loves a good, clean read with a lot of holiday spirit. *I received this book from the author. I was not expected to write a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
4.25 Stars Completed: Dec. 01/25 Series: Prince Edward Island Dreams, #3.5 Format: Kindle e-book
Book #165 of 2025: I have read the first two books of this series but I haven’t read the third yet. This is a sweet and quick Christmas novella that gives the warm fuzzies.
Brooke has been hiding a deep fondness for “Father Chuck” for years and thinks he’s never seen her in that way. She loves to help at the church and is sincere in all she does. Her greatest dream is to be a wife and mother and Chuck is the one she wants to be a part of that dream.
By the way, Chuck is not a Father. Nor is he a Vicar. The church isn’t even Catholic, Anglican, or anything else. It is actually non-denominational and his title is truly, Pastor. It’s just that some older congregants’ historical habits die hard.
Chuck is feeling that he’s failed his congregation and plans to leave for Ireland to take a position there. He also struggles with his feelings for Brooke, 10 years his junior. He feels there is no chance. Then he and Brooke are unexpectedly snowed in over Christmas at the-closed-for-the-holidays, Red Door Inn. The awkwardness of their solitude begins but then softens into a preservation of Christmas traditions amidst their situation. And long talks.
They discover feelings for each other and bask in the wonder of it. But then their fa la la’s turn into a Scrooge song when the truth comes out. They have to either go their separate ways or figure out a way to make it work.
My favorite part is when they choose “gifts” for each other from around the inn. The thoughtfulness and level of knowing one another shines through. It was so nice to return to the island and enter into the Red Door Inn again.
What's a girl to do when she becomes snowed in with the one man whom she's crushed on since her teen years; Father Chuck O'Flannigan, the local vicar of First Church of North Rustico? "Make him see you for who you are", that's what! Brooke Kane can't help but wonder if it could only be that easy.
Father Chuck O'Flannigan is ready to throw in the proverbial towel; his church's attendance is declining, volunteers have stopped volunteering, and for the first time in many years there were not enough children for a Christmas pageant. Just when he's ready to announce his plans for change, he takes refuge from a blizzard at the Red Door Inn, with the most beautiful eyes on Prince Edward Island, and they belong to the one person whom he will hate to leave behind; Brooke Kane.
Enjoy a witty, winsome, wintry stay at the Red Door Inn . . . while Chuck and Brooke figure things out!
This is such a sweet romance! Sometimes, novellas suffer because of the short length, and a romance isn't quite believable, but in this case, Brooke and Chuck have known each other for years, and they've each been secretly pining for the other. Since the feelings are already there, the short timeline works.
The days Brooke and Chuck spend together are so sweet, and their romance is just so enjoyable! Also, while this book is connected to the other books in the series, it can absolutely be read without knowledge of the other books. It's a perfect book to read on a cold winter's night! 4-1/2 stars.
The perfect Christmas novella. A short, but romantic read with lots of “feels.” If you’ve read the other books in the PEI series, you will be welcomed back home. If not, you’ll want to get there as fast as you can!!
Having enjoyed reading the Prince Edward Island Dreams series, I was delighted to return once again to the Red Door Inn. The owners of the inn, Marie and Seth, have taken their son to California to visit Seth's family. The inn is closed for the winter, but good friend Brooke Kane periodically checks to be sure all is well. On one of her visits, just a few days before Christmas, she is caught at the inn during a blizzard. She hears a ruckus at the door and in falls half frozen Chuck O'Flannigan, her pastor who she's had a crush on since she was sixteen, though he is ten years older. Brooke is twenty-five now and Chuck has been noticing her for several years but has not said or done anything to let her know. Snowbound in the inn for several days, things come to a head. CHRISTMAS AT THE RED DOOR INN is a very satisfying Christmas romance.
I don't like age gap stories, so I just aged up Brooke and I ended up with a very cute Christmas story The story is about Brooke Kane ( Justin's Sister) who was tasked to look after the red door inn during Christmas, but what she didn't expect is that Father Chuck is stranded with her in the inn due to the blizzard .. so they spend a magical three day Christmas in the Inn until their feelings comes out .. but Father Chuck is supposed to leave PEI after Christmas .. what will they do ? in reality there is a ten years age gap between the pastor and Brooke, but I aged up Brooke in my head and it didn't effect the story at all .. it was really sweet and Christmassy and very suitable for the mood I'm in
69 pages of bliss! This is such a sweet novella. Clean and wholesome. Preacher Chuck and Brooke are trapped by a snowstorm. Both have hidden feelings for each other for a long time. Trapped by a snowstorm alone at The Red Door Inn gives them the time they need to be vulnerable and say a few things that need to be said. This leads to a very, steamy kiss and then someone says the wrong thing and a huge obstacle is now in the way of happiness. Isn't that how it always goes? Liz Johnson works it all out in a most wonderful way. I loved reading this book. I initially borrowed it from Kindle Unlimited but bought it as soon as I finished reading it. I know I will want to read it again.
Such a sweet little love story wrapped up in a novella. These are the best love stories - the ones that get straight into the story with no back and forth of thoughts (though there was a little of that) and other people intruding. This story takes place over three days - 23rd, 24th and 25th of December and an unlikely couple snowed in at the empty Red Door Inn.
This book was only available in e-book form. Since I had read the first 3 books in the series and loved them, and my husband is from Prince Edward Island, I succumbed to purchasing the e-book even though I am a print-only girl.
I look forward to reading the author's other series of cozy romances.
Oh, but this was such a sweet novella! I loved both Brooke and Chuck, and thought their chemistry together was playful and dear. I did have to chuckle a bit at Chuck near the end when he has an epiphany that had been staring him in the face for too long. He called himself an idiot, and while I wouldn't necessarily have used the exact term . . . But my favourite parts of the novel were the scriptural reminders shared . . . that without Christmas, there is no Easter celebration . . . that Jesus is Emmanuel . . . God with us . . . God big enough to encompass the entire world in His redeeming love, but also . . . God small enough to know *my* name, *my* heartaches, *my* joys.
A gift from the Red Door Inn just in time for Christmas! Brooke and Chuck both manage to get snowed into the Inn for a couple of days due to a major snow storm. Brooke is checking the Inn for her friends who are away and Chuck, lost in the snow storm, sees the red door and makes his way to it. This is where the fun really starts. Chuck is Brookes pastor and is 10 years older than her. He’s thinking of leaving Prince Edward Island as he’s conflicted about his feelings for Brooke. A fun read with brilliant dialogue and a love story which will warm your heart.
A lighthearted read in the "Red Door Inn" series. Liiz Johnson has a remarkable way of bringing her characters to life in a realistic and truly remarkable way. They all have strengths and weaknesses, which allows them to be so relatable. Her storyline for this novella was heartwarming and enthralling. If is written.
I love this story about Brooke and Chuck, as well as the story of two people who struggle to get where they both have wanted be for so long
Snowed in at The Red Door Inn...was simply beautiful. Filled with a longing for her pastor to see her as more than a parishioner, Brooke gets caught in a blizzard at Christmas time. A mysterious stranger needs help...maybe God is leading two lonely hearts to a happily ever after. Christmas at The Red Door Inn was filled with hope and finding love. Inspiring Hallmark Christmas story feel with faith as a focus. Loved it!
