A Must-Read Book

Mark Agan confronts suicide for what it is in a compassionate and factual way. It is written simply so the layperson can understand what they are dealing with. There is little psychological jargon in the book. It is the antidote that is needed to bring insight and prevention to one of the leading causes of death in America, and worldwide. This book addresses not only suicide but also its forerunner, the darkness of despair and depression.

Perhaps we know someone close to us who has attempted or committed suicide. Perhaps we work closely with someone with depression or suicidal thoughts. Perhaps we have been there ourselves? Perhaps we have wondered why a person gets to that point in life when life no longer is worth living. I think Agan as put it so aptly when he writes, “A suicidal person is one who has quit living long before they ever die.” If that does not rouse our compassion what will?

The Deceptive Side of Suicide covers causes, practical steps to take for the person with suicidal thoughts, for the friend who comes along side and for the church to take action, providing an environment that engenders prevention.

Mark Agan turns to the Bible as his source for understanding and helping someone who suffers through depression or contemplates suicide. Although some may turn aside from this book because of its Christian context, this book can be read by everyone who wants to know more about The Deceptive Side of Suicide. There are practical gleanings in it for all of us.

I gave this book a 5-star rating because it is well-written, and the content is well-researched with practical guidelines for all of us who want to have a better knowledge of the topic.
