Born in battle, my birth brought peace. But peace is boring and so is the warlock I’m betrothed to.

Real Name: Aria Emanuele

Code Name: The Sapphire Scythe

Supe Status: First vampire/Succubus hybrid. Heir to the Aeternae clan.

Military status: Top spy and assassin for the Universal Army.

I’ve been running from my duties as the heir to the supe kingdom to marry Cade, my intended, and create more hybrid children for centuries. I’ve been playing soldier, spy, assassin, or whatever takes me close to the action instead. My parents and my people think I just need time to sow my royal oats, but I love this too much to give it up.

Humans have brought themselves to World War Three. My mission in the Universal Army is to get close to the dictator who caused it. I already suspect he’s got a supe close to him, but I’m keeping it to myself for now. I want to do this myself. I had a mark close to Zimin, the dictator. My mission was simple. Extract information, then kill him. Something went horribly wrong that night. I wake up in a hotel room with a Lycan, a vamp, and a warlock. All trained assassins like me. Seems my dear parents sent them here.

There’s also a little catch in there. According to the men in my hotel, nature has given me three mates instead of one. Nature and my parents expect me to pick. Nature has sick sense of humor and seems to know my horrible taste in men. There’s Ronric, the huge Irish Lycan, Rainer, the dark Egyptian Warlock, and Kalon, the swarthy Bulgarian vampire. I had a lot of fun in all three countries before swearing off men from any of those places and refusing to go back.

Now, I’ve got 3 beautiful men in front of me with all the qualities I want in a man and I have no idea how I’m supposed to pick.

To be honest The Sapphire Scythe caught my attention because one of the MCs is Bulgarian and because I’m a Bulgarian I got curious. Mostly I wanted to see if the character will be mostly a stereotype. To my pleasant surprise that was not the case and the explanation provided by the author for the atypical name made sense.
The book is based on a solid idea and had amazing potential. The characters are interesting if rather infantile (more on that later) and there’s an interesting background. However, the plot was unpolished and everything felt rushed. There were a few inconsistencies that in such a short book make you take notice. As I said before the characters were a bit infantile and felt a lot like young adults. That wouldn’t have been a problem had they been in fact teenagers or new adults in their early 20s. However, the characters all predate modern humans in universe. That means they’re all thousands of years old and having them behave like a bunch of horny teens with very little social skills was annoying.
In my opinion the style of writing requires more work but it shows promise. Some scenes were well executed. A little bit more worldbuilding, a little more time on developing both the characters and the plot and this can be a great book. But as this is the first book in the series some bumps are expected and usually they get polished in later instalments. I’m looking forward to seeing what the author will do with second novel and will reserve judgment of the series until I’ve had the chance to read that as well.

eARC received through Booksprouts in exchange of an honest review. This in no way influences my opinion.

The Sapphire Scythe by J.B. Trepagnier is a Reverse Harem paranormal romance. The book has the main character of Aria that is a hybrid vampire and also an assassin. Though there were lots of events to create drama, the main driving force of the story was that Aria has to choose one mate out of three males.

It was a good attempt at creating an RH kind of storyline where a hybrid vampire succubus is lured by three paranormal males. A Lycan, a warlock, and a vampire.

The book is full of characters and I was having a hard time remembering their names. Rainer, the warlock, Ronric, the werewolf, and Kalon, the vampire, if I remember them correctly. The book starts slow.

I liked the storyline and the plot. However, there was quite a heavy lot of lengthy exposition in the beginning. This slows the pace of the book. And despite being an action-packed story, the book seems to lose its pace and rhythm at many places. However, the fight scenes were written well and were vivid.

I have read the author before and in contrast to her other works, this seemed like a slow-burning read. I felt drifted quite a times because of heavy chunks of narrative summary that tells a lot but shows very little.

That said, the book has some well-sketched intimate scenes. The chemistry between Aria and her three potential partners was quite interesting and gives the reader reasons to carry on with the book. Recommended to those looking for a steamy paranormal romance.

This was ok.
I liked the concept and the characters.
But it was just so repetitive. Especially when it came to the mating issue.

I don’t know.
The sex was just ok.
The plot was interesting but I think could’ve been executed better.
I think this book needs an intense round of editing to get it up to my personal standards.
With the way it is now, could’ve been a novella and we would’ve gotten the exact same information, just a lot more concisely.

I’ve long been a fan of paranormal romance of all sorts but I actually had never heard of “reverse harem” as a sub-genre before this book. Aria was a really cool main character who was all about the girl power. We get her backstory in the first two chapters, learning all about how she is a half-vamp, half succubus who has centuries of experience fighting in wars. I liked the world-building here, some really creative stuff, particularly in the details of how certain tribes were shamed for their bad deeds and how humans can to emerge and supernaturals had to go into hiding.

The voice is fun, it’s snarky and even though we’re in a fantasy world where succubi drain life energy, you still have moms who are enamored with the new technology of having a smart phone and want to text you constantly.

The steamy scenes were steamy and nicely varied with just the right amount of detail, and all three of the male main characters have their perks. This almost felt a little like “The Bachelor” for succubi, with all the dates, in a good way! I think my favorite was motorcycle camping. Yum! Without giving away spoilers, I had a favorite early on (even among supernaturals, I have my favorites), but I liked all of them and was a little nervous about how Aria was going to make her decision. This had a cool ending and definitely set things up for a sequel that should be just as awesome.

Please excuse typos/name misspellings. Entered on screen reader.

Aria was born royalty but she is also First vampire/Succubus hybrid. She thinks her life is boring, she thinks the man she is supposed to marry is boring, so they allow her to go down her wild oats then come back and make lots of hybrid babies. Aria has no such plans and with her action packed adventures she undecided between three men with all their qualities make the perfect man. She has to make a choice....

I’ve never read a reverse harem book before this one, so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the premise intrigued me. This book did not disappoint! Full of action and steamy romance, The Sapphire Scythe was different from other urban fantasy books I’ve read with an interesting insight into the supernatural and the way they interact with one another and humans. My only issue is that I feel as if the book could’ve had a little bit more of a backstory just because there were so many different Covens/supernatural groups that it would’ve made it that much better to know more about this book’s world. Other than that, this is a recommended read!

Great new suspenseful, keep you on edge of your seat book. Love it.

Learned form author that this book is considered a reverse harem paranormal romance. I don't care what you call it!!!! I read it because paranormal using supes as main characters. The suspense of what was going on and who was responsible was what kept me reading. the reverse harem, not a big deal since we all have our own fantasies whether we admit to them or not.

This is my honest and freely given review. I was given a beta version of the book to read. I am honored that the author respected mine and others comments on making the book better.

This was a solid paranormal reverse harem. The main reason I haven't rated it higher is because it was a bit romance heavy for me. Whilst I enjoy the Reverse Harem genre, I am not a massive fan of Paranormal Romance, as I prefer the plot to take the centre stage, with the romance/relationship development in the background. In the case with this book the relationships were definitely the dominant storyline.

The world it is set in is an interesting one, with a clear history given. I would have liked to see more of this and a greater exploration into their world and how all the different groups worked together, as I think there was lots of the potential there.

Aria was a good character and I liked how she stood her ground and and was tough throughout, not taking any crap from her three suitors.

The men were all fine, although Ronric's possessiveness got a bit annoying at times. I liked the way they managed to resolve everything and I liked the HEA at the end.

If you're looking for a RH that's heavy on the romance, with a reasonably quick burn and some steam, then give this a go!

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I liked this book overall. The characters were pretty decent, and I thought the storyline was interesting. However, I felt like there were too many secrets and info dumps, which annoyed me. I did like the end, and I am interested in reading about Liliana.

3 stars.

Aria Emanuele is a hybrid, an assassin, a spy and Heir to Aerteranae Vampire Clan. She is also The Sapphire Scythe assassin. She is one of the first of her kind a vampire/succubus hybrid with powers of both. She has been promised to a warlock Cade, but instead runs off to fight in the human wars. So her parents after so many centuries try to find her true mate and send three men to her. Rainer is a warlock is Heir to the Infinity Coven, Ronric is a Lycan and Heir to the Hollow Fire Pack and Kalon is a vampire and Heir to the Onyx Clan. They too are assassins and spys. They are known as The Black Shade - Rainer, The Iron Beast- Ronric and The Crimson Streak - Kalon. Also Ronric is Irish, Kalon is Bulgarian and Rainer is English. Once Aria meets all these men and finds out her mother sent them she then has a fight on her hands. So much more is involved with this story. Besides the sex there is a lot if action and so many characters that you know will flow onto the next book. You also learn about the beginnings of The Order of the Red Shadow.

THE SAPPHIRE SCYTHE, J.B. Trepagnier's Order of The Red Shadow Series Book #1, centers on Aria, an elite spy and assassin in the Universal Army. Born of a vampire father and succubus mother, she uses her powers inherited from both to infiltrate and kill to advance her cause in the supernatural, or "supe," war waging within the larger World War III fought by humans. But her "rest and relaxation" between missions is anything but. To maintain her powers she must feed off the sexual energy of men - soldiers the army provides her nightly in exchange for her successes in battle.
While preparing to help defend Turkey from an invasion by a force intent on conquering all of Asia, political dealings within the supe community conspire to betroth Aria to three supernatural beings - a werewolf, a vampire, and a warlock. In between making plans and taking steps to bring down the invasion force, she must "get to know" each of them before she can choose her mate.
The sex scenes are graphic, told from Aria's first-person point-of-view, and not for the timid. If "paranormal reverse harem romance" is a real sub-niche, then the quality of storytelling in THE SAPPHIRE SCYTHE should put it near the top of that genre.

First, I want to admit this is my very first reverse harem and I have sound reasons I was reluctant to read in that genre. However, I should have known that this author, who never lets me down, would have written it to not only address those issues but do with such a style that I was gripped, and even laughing in places. I mean really, ladies, what woman wouldn’t go insane dealing with more than one man? Aria totally reacted to them as I would have, and with enough snark that I actually fell in love with her and would have joined her harem. 😉 The next thing I wondered about was how three alpha males would agree to share and let’s be honest again, most male heroes in PNR worth reading are alphas - as were these. I loved the way this was handled, especially the end solution. There was a lot of bickering and butting heads as there should be. The hot parts were steaming and the chemistry between Aria and all three men was off the charts. I’m a huge fan of witches so obviously I had a favorite. I’m not saying I’m sold on RH as a subgenre, but I am sold on this authors RH and easily recommend it.

A paranormal erotic delight. Aria is a powerful hybrid supernatural warrior. She is both succubus and vampire and has lived for centuries believing she has been betrothed by her parents to a warlock named Cade. Trouble is she's just not that into him and has ran from this commitment for centuries. Just as she's embarking on a mission to end WWIII, she finds out from her mother Cade isn't her intended and that she has THREE other mates. When her mother sends them into her life, Aria is infuriated at first until she realizes she can't resist any of them. But how is she to choose one out of three gorgeous, sexy, amazing men--one a vampire, a warlock and a Lycan? It isn't easy, but Aria's journey getting there will keep you turning pages if you like deliciously hot men and steamy sex scenes.
This is the second book I've read of this authors and I am a fan. I like her reverse haram thing and all the characters are very engaging and unique. The only thing I would suggest for this book is a professional edit. Other than that it was amazing!

I really enjoyed this book! The differences between the characters were well written, making each of her mates unique in a way she was still clearly drawn to them. I loved the conflict that they fought against, and their dedication. I was surprised at her immediate turn around of attitude towards them though. One minute she was “I’m not being claimed by anyone” and the next she was all in without any transition period.
Having all the different supernatural species was one of the huge selling points to this book, and the way they all would bind to her differently was creative and well written.
This was an easy flowing addictive book & i’d definitely recommend!

Have. Mercey. That. Was. Hot.
I truly stayed on my toes with this one. The way she has three mates and may have to choose only one is exciting and heartbreaking all in the same breath. I love how they seem to know so much about her and how she has other mates but refrain from killing each other She is a pretty awesome chic. No one to be messed with, that is for sure. The way the males provide for her and put her needs before their own is pretty astounding. I really enjoyed the entire plot and storyline in its entirety.

If you don't know what RH is it's one woman and a bunch of guys that love her.
This book has the perfect amount of sassy MC and sexy men. There is also a bit of humor thrown in if the sassy MC and three sexy men don't do it for you. This book will have you laughing then all hot and bothered on the next page. The chemistry between them is just right. The boys take a little while to get along, but the MC isn't afraid to knock them off their high horse. If you like it fast and hot with a supernatural twist this book is for you. Book 2 is in the works now so get this gem before book two is ready so you can binge to your heart's content.

I’m a big fan of J.P. Trepagnier’s stories and this is book 1 to The Order of the Red Shadow and I enjoyed this story immensely. Aria is a half vampire half succubus who has been around for centuries, her parents have betrothed Aria to a warlock but she’s not interested in him so she runs but her parents think that she has gone to play the field and that’s far from the truth. Aria meets 3 men but why does she have to choose one couldn’t she have all 3?. I loved the action and adventure in this story and Aria was a bit of a tough nut to crack, sometimes the characters acted like teenagers but I enjoyed this story nonetheless and I recommend this book.

Wow! This book was nothing like I've ever read before. Very well written. I literally felt like I was inside the head of the MC. Loved this book and the developed characters. I loved a lot about the book that the MC was a hybrid that made it interesting to find her mate. She had three potential mates...they were facing WWW III and their complicated relationships with one another and their struggle to be chosen and how it all played it in the end. The secrets keep you going, especially with the contract. Action packed and full of twist and turns. The build up to the end was not disappointing. The author's storytelling was magical. Look forward to reading more from this author. Did I already say wow? Well again wow!

My review.
Wow. I was not able to put the book down, I enjoyed reading it that much.
JB Trepagnier, is one talented author.
I will be keeping an eye out for the next book in the series.

I enjoyed the characters and following their story, and their secret history to one another. The real reason why they are now together.
Once the truth came out to Aria regarding the three men she woke up with, her heartbreaks when she is told she has to pick only one man, even though she is connected with each one of them.

A happy conclusion happens when a solution is found.
I recommend this book and the author. A must read.

Fun read

This was a fun series opener set in a world full of different supernaturals and the political game between them. I enjoyed the overall plot and story line but I felt it was rushed at times and certain scenes felt choppy. The information dump was overwhelming at times. It seemed like there were probably 3 or 4 different times where I felt the dump of information was just too much and caused my eyes to cross.

I think this book could have been spaced out over 2 books which would have allowed the author to flesh out everything and make it seem more rounded out and less rushed.

Lip Service

So, this is a installation book with a loose plot. It is not a bad book, but I have a higher expectation of my heroines these days.

At the beginning of the book, the MC is treated like crap by a love interest and just takes it. When he explains, the reason is lame and she immediately forgives him. Although she is the strongest, the men treat her as the weakest and grope her because they like her not caring how she feels. Don’t get me wrong, the MC accepts this like it is ok. That’s my problem. Another book where a woman bends to the will of men’s lust and she instaloves it. Not a strong MC, that’s just lip service.

The characters are colorful, loveable and enough complexity to keep you hooked. The storyline is wonderful. It has action, drama, suspense, twists, and turns and don’t forget about the romance, the sex and enough emotions to grab at the heart string and want to cheer the characters on.

I thought the storyline very interesting and quite an original twist to the whole paranormal and reverse harem. It’s a great concept and made for a very entertaining read with some nice steamy scenes. Great story.

I was transported in to a strange world, strange but wonderful. Plenty of warlocks, lycans, vampires, succubus and other magical beings. With magic ruling it all. With secrets obscuring the truth and the future. With love and possessiveness, wars and betrayals. With hunky as hell men. And one very brave, very strong, loving and determinate woman to solve it all and find her happily ever after. It was wonderful read, which make me crave to read more about other characters we started to get to know.

An action packed book with a very capable heroine who would rather go to war than mate her boring betrothed! But Aria has to choose between three potential mates her parents sent her while trying to stop a war. I was enthralled by the story from the start, I loved that Aria was able to take care of business and her mates were happy to let her. Things between the four were highly emotional, it was heart wrenching as Aria faced losing two of her men when she would have to choose, Jennifer Whiskey's narration expressed the feelings wonderfully. I can't wait to start book 2

While I enjoyed this book I can’t really rave about it. The characters where ok. The men bickering and fighting, threatening hexes and death got a little old for me. Then there was the plot. I liked the plot but it felt like an afterthought opposed to a critics piece of the story to me. It was an odd combination but it felt really romance heavy but also like the romance was just ok. I found myself thinking I’ve read much better rh books with the heavy romance but incredible plot as well. So on both sides this book was just ok. I will read the next book though.

Aria is the assassin known as the Sapphire Scythe, she is millennia old, a hybrid vampire and succubus. Her parents are royalty, sending her 3 mates a warlock, wolf shifter and a vampire. Everyone wants her to choose just one, but she can't, won't choose. Together they are sent to take down a ruthless dictator.
I liked this book. Like the storyline and characters. I enjoyed the magic and fighting scenes especially.

Well I just loved this book. The premise is great, and the characters are awesome. I loved the twists and turns of the storyline. The fact that Aria has three mates will play out well over the arc of the books I believe. Meeting them was great, and the initial interactions. I cannot wait to see what happens in the next book.

I enjoyed the book. I loved the premise of all the different paranormal entities competing against each other as the love interest. I felt that each character could have had a little more backstory though to really bring it home. I am looking forward to the continuation of the series and maybe even a box set to read them all together. All in all a quick read.
