I received an ARC from the author at my request and this is my honest opinion. (Yes, I know I'm late getting this read and reviewed, but if you knew my life you would understand.) I have read all of the "Reacher" novels written by Mr. Ames and he very rarely disappoints. This is another in a long line of great books. There is one caveat to that on this one: the main premise is a little "out there" for my tastes. However, Mr. Ames handles it so well that it doesn't detract from the suspense and action. I found myself just going along with it. And even though this is a fairly quick read, there is plenty of action, suspense, and mystery wrapped up in it. Several other reviewers have commented that there were threads that were not completely resolved and I guess to a certain point that is true. They were not sewed up in neat little bows, but they were for the most part resolved; just maybe not in the detail that some would like. I really like the characters of Pauling and Tallon as they begin to explore and develop their relationship. I think they make a great team and I can't wait to see where Mr. Ames takes them next. And for those reviewers who complain that this is not a "Jack Reacher" book; it doesn't claim to be. It is a series written in the Jack Reacher world with characters from that series. Check these books out and I think you will find they can hold their own. I definitely recommend them.
"Guns were everywhere in the West." This, the eighth book in this reasonably enjoyable Reacher series, travels with ex-FBI agent Pauling, now a wealthy woman, to stay with Michael Fallon at his isolated ranch outside of Independence Springs - a simple holiday or for good, neither yet knows. The rural calm is broken by a spate of murders, and Fallon becomes prime suspect for the inexperienced young sheriff.
Each of these short novellas packs a curious plot and The Man Who Walks Away is certainly no exception. All are completely stand alone. However, with little by way of character development, prior knowledge of the backstory of the two main protagonists adds interest. This very quick to read book would have been much improved if filled out: it feels more like the skeleton rather than a fully fleshed body.
I am lucky enough to be on this authors Advanced Readers team. This book is part of a great series. Every time I read a new book in this series I say this is my new favorite. But this author seems to make each story better and better. He tops himself. The two main characters in this series are Pauling and Tallon. If you have never read this series I would recommend you start at the beginning. You will not be disappointed. This book has it all, Murder, romance, suspense, sick twisted personalities all in a very fast paced story. I read it in one sitting. It grabs you from page one. At times you will hold your breath. I have one word to describe this book...WOWZA! Get it and enjoy!
Former FBI agent Lauren Pauling has sold her P.I. business and moved to Independence Springs, CA to join ex-Special Forces Michael Fallon. A depraved series of rapes/murders/mutilations in their remote area are a real challenge for the local female sheriff, who thinks Tallon might be the killer because of boot prints left at one scene. But, instead the murders are the work of some psychotic super soldiers, whose existence are a secret being kept by someone too close to the investigation.
P.S. Dan Ames should have done better research, as it is not possible to fly direct from NYC's LaGuardia Airport to Las Vegas McCarran Airport.
Tension captures you of the mission they are getting ready for from the first page. With a loose cannon on his team to keep control over, to a female they didn’t know would be there, a massacre, the mission was a bust. Talon getting ready for Pauling to come.hoping it would be permanent This was a test run, with her company.sold, she had no commitments. The dialog is sharp, with non stop action, murder, romance. Another winner in this series. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion
Dan Ames has brought Tallon and Pauling back to a situation set in Tallon's back yard. This time, the Army is about it's clandestine business and the result ensnares Tallon, Pauling and a young, female Sheriff in a case full of twists and psychological turns. You won't want to put this one down; Lee Child and Reacher would be proud how this one plays out. You definitely won't see the ending coming, but let's just say, it set's the stage for future adventures for Tallon and Pauling, not to mention the introduction of a future nemesis for the two of them. Definitely 5 stars!
A secret government base in the desert has developed a new type of weapon that shows promise to become a squad of super soldiers. The squad is instructed to locate and destroy the target no matter what. Too bad this new type soldier has some memory issues.
Tallon gets dragged into an investigation when a murder happens near him and soon it is up to Pauling to set things straight.
Once again Pauling and Tallon collaborate on a case; but, it is the first time they are together as true partners. The story line is a bit far-fetched; but, not completely unbelievable.
Fast paced and original story that keeps you guessing as to the who and why until the end. Great to see more the of the relationship between Pauling and Tallon.
