I started this when I needed a bit of a laugh.
These shorts aren’t generally ‘ha ha’ funny but it was cool to see what happened in the main manga and it going in a slightly weird direction.

There were also stories celebrating holidays like Christmas and Valentine’s Day!

Not sure how much of this is actually canon but there were a few moments that I thought could be.

I was thinking how the heck would they make the attack of USJ funny but it was actually done pretty well!

Then there were the side stories…
One had the characters gender-swapped! That one was my favourite.
Plus even some stories based on the creator's real life!

While this definitely isn’t required reading, I’ll probably pick up the next volume. Especially when I need something to smile at.

I really like My Hero Academia series, so I was curious to look at this one. Unfortunately this wasn't that good at all! This more or less recall the same event at the first few books of the collection, but in a more cartoonist take and with an humor tons that wasn't that good for me. Maybe a younger public would enjoy it, but it just feel too light, too easy in the humor style for me to really enjoy this one. I won't continue with this collection. It just don't bring anything new to the series and the humor wasn't for me!

This is a hard one to rate. On one hand, it is pretty much a shot for shot recap of the main manga. Like, actually dialogue and art from that manga is in here. I don’t know if there were enough added scenes to make this a recommend.

It’s insane! For better and for worse in some cases. The gag about Midoriya knowing way too much about Bakugo, Jairo’s sarcastic commentary and the jokes about Iida taking everything too seriously did make me laugh. On the other hand, there was more of Mineta being a downright creep and grown villains perving on Momo, which I didn’t like. Although, I did get Jiro planning Mineta’s murder and that was cool.

It’s a mixed bag. I don’t think I’d buy it but it was fine to read on the SJ app.

Entertaining accompaniment to MHA. It describes itself as the equivalent of the bloopers shown during movie credits and that is a fitting description. The art style is also very cute. Recommended for all MHA fans.

Extrait :
Petit spin off de My Hero Academia que je me décide enfin à commencer.

I read My Hero Academia: Smash Vol. 1 through VIZ Media: Shonen Jump.

My Hero Academia: Smash is a series intent on retelling the original series that we love so much (My Hero Academia, in case that wasn't painfully obvious), but with a more...humorous twist. If you haven't read the original series, a lot of what happens here probably won't make a lot of sense.

Likewise, if you don't want to see MHA without it's a more serious edge...this probably isn't the series for you. It's a little bit quirky, and a whole lot crazy. Not exactly the series that caught our attention, to put it mildly.

My Hero Academia: Smash Vol. 1 is basically a chaotic run of the introductory arcs for MHA. It covers all of the basics – Deku meeting All Might, entrance exams, everything like that. There is one thing that makes the volume stand out from the original however...it is insane.

I mean that in the best way possible, of course. It's a quirky and playful version of MHA, which can be so much fun. Especially if you're in the right mood for it. Basically, it's a comical retelling of the series thus far, which is fine (if you go into the series expecting that).

Personally, I enjoyed the moments that went off script a bit more. The outtakes and added humor that really made it all stand out. Though I should probably warn you that there's a heavy dose of fan service to be found in here as well, so take that however you like.

On the whole, My Hero Academia: Smash Vol. 1 was everything it promised to be. It was funny and different, a nice change of pace, especially considering how heavy the original series can get at times.

This book is not for everyone. It is for fans of the main My Hero Academia series who want to read silly parodies of some of the stories they've been reading, or weird "what if" revisions of some of the characters and their interactions.
This kind of thing has been around in manga for a long time, and in a few cases the oddball versions are better than the original. That is not the case in this series, but the Smash 4-panel comics are mostly very funny IF you know what they're spoofing. If you haven't read the original series yet, then this book shouldn't be on your list. It would consist of confusing spoilers rather than gags.
That said, in a few cases there are legitimate things brought up about the uses of super powers in the main series...like which pairings of characters would really be safe to have working together in combat, or what some potentially dangerous uses of powers might be. So, it's not JUST goofy stuff. The manga's creator mentions thinking of it like "outtakes" from a movie or TV show, the stuff that normally gets left on the cutting room floor. Think of it like that, and enjoy.

The lastest spinoff of hit manga and anime My Hero Academia to be translated into English by Caleb Cook has finally hit shelves. My Hero Academia: Smash!!, Vol. 1 is created by Hirofumi Neda and Kohei Horikoshi. Unlike the series proper or other spinoff, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes by Hideyuki Furuhashi and Betten Court, this manga is a humorous four panel adaptation. Attention is divided between humorous takes on major story beats and some of the quieter moments in between.

This is a proper 4-koma(four panel) manga. Each comedic strip consists of four panels running vertically down the page. Scenes are short, sweet, and rather to the point. However, these are grouped into chapters which create larger scenes or span the course of some major arcs within the first few volumes of the manga (or the first season of the anime).

As with anything comedic, the humor can be rather subjective to the reader. By and large, the jokes land fairly well. However, the first half of the manga can be a bit hit or miss. The second half feels much more consistent in tone, and I found it much easier to get through. Some of the panels in this section are quite memorable, downright laugh out loud funny. If you are finding this manga difficult to get through, I’d suggest skimming part of the second half. There could be some hidden gems in there you’d enjoy.

While My Hero Academia: Smash!!, Vol. 1 by Hirofumi Neda and Kohei Horikoshi didn’t prove to be quite as memorable as most of the other My Hero Academia spinoffs, I did enjoy it. I do want to see what direction further manga in this series take. If you like My Hero Academia this probably something you’ll want to pick up.

Can’t lie I forgot I was reading this, it was cute and basically runs through the Manga in less detail yet more detail depending on the scene.

It basically seems like he’s taking the piss out of his own creation (the normal MHA manga) by drawing them small and mini and it’s just good for if you need a run down of what happened in the first few. Definitely won’t be reading the next few for a while until I’ve finished the core Manga series just as it doesn’t feel right as I’ve now read further into the series via Smash than I have the actual series that’s been sat on my shelf collecting dust.

But yes it was cute despite the fact that I forgot it was here on my good reads and that I was reading it lol.

This spin-off is significantly more raunchy than the original source material to the point of being uncomfortable for me to read. If you think Mineta is bad already, he is so much worse in this. The chibi style used is oddly proportioned, even for chibis, and the overall art style sucks all of the charm and beauty out of the original character designs. Only managed to read about a third of it before giving up. It is distinctly not funny and ugly to look at. There is an incredibly cute illustration from Horikoshi at the back which redeems it somewhat.

This is a gag manga retelling of the MHA story by one of the original collaborators. It follows the core plot, but recreates scenes through humorous 4 panel comics. The humor is referred to by the author as more lewd and dirty than the humor in the original story, but I didn't think it was all that wild. Of course Mineta and Mt. Lady play prominent roles. Not every comic was a hit, but it was a fun and silly way to revisit a story I enjoy. Definitely read the originals first if you're hoping to fully grasp the plot.

Eh. It's okay.
I like a lot of the smaller characters in MHA and I thought the school setting would work for gag manga, but this is super set on following the plot of the main story and only really got me like twice? I really can't recommend it except to superfans who mistakenly like Mineta.

Also, as per usual, needs more Froppy. Froppy spinoff please. Or maybe get her involved with the Vigilantes kids? I like them too, and I bet they'd appreciate the best girl.

Honestly, it started out... bad. Especially when parodying direct scenes out of the original comic. However, with more "behind the scenes" gags, it picked up a lot, and I did audibly chuckle several times by the end. I most enjoyed when the comics played off of the characters' personalities.

I also liked recognizing the minor villains who come back around, like hedgehog guy from Vigilantes. (I think he's in the original series a bit, too?)

Eh. This was kind of a slog to read. It's a collection of comic strips that mostly re-tell the story of the manga in an outtake/"humorous" way. "Humorous", because to me, most of the gags weren't that funny or didn't land at all. It was nice in a fanservice kind of way, but it probably would have worked better if they'd just put some of the strips after each of the actual chapters (and scrapped most of the rest). 2.5 stars

Short, funny, non-canon comic strips. Kind of like cotton candy for your brain. Not good necessarily, but you can enjoy it. I probably won't read more, unless I really just want a very fast, disappear-from-my-brain-as-quickly-as-I-read-it kind of book. Still, for funny little what-ifs, they weren't bad.

This is just retelling (more or less) the main My Hero Academia story. But as if the story was published in the old school daily 3 panel American Newspaper Comics style. The stories while being retold are not an improvement to the story and most are not even funny. Did these lose something in translation?

It’s a silly, slightly raunchy manga that covers the beginning up until the USJ incident.

I don’t like most of the jokes that are in it, but it is interesting to see what neda focuses on when it comes to the important events in the series.

And I actually do like seeing a different side to the beloved characters. Will read the remaining 4 volumes.

I wasn’t exactly sure what this was gonna be going into it but I found this to be a bit too weird for me. Sure, there were some good parts here and there but the jokes were mostly odd and I found the style I had to read it in to be a little draining and I just personally didn’t find myself enjoying this much, will definitely be sticking with the regular MHA mangas in future.
