4.5 intriguing stars🌟🌟🌟🌟.25
The beginning of this book is heart wrenching.... Jessica lives every mother‘s worst nightmare.... that phone call from the school, that your child has been rushed to the hospital.... this was brilliant on the authors part, it made Jessica such a sympathetic and relatable character.... I have to say Beth’s funeral was one of the toughest things I’ve read.... definitely have tissue handy.....
After Jessica loses her little girl she is encouraged to leave her home town, Her dad, and her husband.... The book then jumps forward 17 years and we find Jessica living a new life, but never forgetting her old life..... and her old life has definitely not forgotten her....
Secrets lead to lies and lies lead to secrets... it is a vicious circle.... Jessica absolutely has not always made the best choices, but I could always understand her motivations....
Some pretty creepy things happen in this book... that keep you wanting to know what exactly is going on..... I was keeping my fingers crossed for Jessica the entire time.... I did see one of the twists coming, but another twist took me by surprise.... and that was the creepiest of them all.....
I unquestionably recommend this book to all fans of the psychological thriller..... I especially recommend if you are a mother, you will sympathize with Jessica and feel her struggle throughout....

MY THOUGHTS: The Daughter by Lucy Dawson is a well written psychological-thriller that moves along at a good pace. It is written over two timelines, firstly when Jess is twenty-four and then almost twenty years later.
I have to admit that I didn't like Jess, the main character, and in the early part of the book I had to keep reminding myself that she was very young and that, at that age, we don't always think things through. But even twenty years later, she doesn't seem to have matured much. She has a lovely husband and child, but remains obsessed by her dead first child. Her obsession and the accompanying paranoia are central to the success of the story.
Dawson had me really wondering just who was behind all the misfortunes that were befalling Jess and her family, and my suspicious mind was leaping from person to person - always the sign of a good read when I suspect everyone!

The Daughter by Lucy Dawson is a psychological thriller that should come with a box of tissues with every book purchase. The first few chapters of this one take the reader back to a time when Jess was a happily married young mother to her little girl Beth.
After enrolling her daughter into a new school Jess has a blast from the past when the man she had loved at nineteen turns out to work at the school. This opens up a whole mess of secrets and lies but before Beth even gets a chance to wrap her head around what it all means she gets the phone call that is every parent’s nightmare, her daughter Beth has been rushed to the hospital.
The story then jumps seventeen years into the future for Jess and picks up with her seemingly now having gotten her life together and again at a happy place. But things begin happening in Jess’s life that begin to shake her to the core and bring back the memories and nightmares of that day years before.
The way the author set up this story was a twist of genius since the reader already knows just from the small description that Jess is going to lose her daughter but taking a close look at just what happened was a surefire way to pull me into the story and have me emotionally invested within the opening pages. It was such a heartbreaking beginning to the story that I do think it will be handy to have tissues at the ready and prepare yourself beforehand.
After the time jump I wondered if the story would still flow and be as engaging but I didn’t need to worry at all as I found myself still connected to Jess and wanting to know what was now going on with her life. The book has a creepy vibe with some things thrown into the story as events begin happening which I rather enjoyed too. I did find myself guessing the outcome which led to my 4 star rating but this was still an engrossing read that I would recommend checking out regardless.

An enjoyable book, it is about Jess, who seventeen years ago lost her five year old daughter. Now, in the present, she still suffers from the guilt that day caused her, yet all the lies and secrets have ways of catching up with you, and someone is making sure that Jess never forgets.
An interesting look at guilt and the butterfly effect of how things spiral out from our actions, all neatly packaged in an intense psychological thriller. The fact that I had an idea from early in the book didn't detract in any way. The Daughter is a quick and decent read.

5☆ Extremely Captivating, Emotional yet the perfect atmospheric Thriller!
The Daughter is a captivating, very emotional, chilling, endearing read that I literally couldn't put down.
When Jess's Daughter Beth tragically dies in a freak accident.
Her whole world is about to come tumbling down around her.
Secrets and lies have a way of catching up with you, as Jess is about to discover!
To what lengths will a family go to, in order to protect their family! Enter Jess's world to find out!
I am not able to divulge any more of the plot as I really don't want to give anything away. It's too good!
But what I will say is how fantastic this book is.
The Start of the book had me choked up with tears.
I don't cry very easily from books so trust me when I say Lucy's heart wrenching highly emotional writing pulled on my heart strings.
I could feel every single raw emotion that Jess was feeling. To be able to feel those emotions that deeply just highlights to me how captivating Lucy's writing style is.
Not only is The Daughter a highly emotionally charged book, it is also completely unnerving and the perfect Pschological thriller that will leave you remembering and talking about it for days to come!
It's subtly creepy with lil unnerving twists which only intensify as the story unfolds.
Be prepared to be caught off guard, kept guessing, have your emotions toyed with, spine tingling creepy sensations, a lil dark and a lil sinister. The perfect combination. I loved it!
Don't be fooled by the start of this book as it packs a huge punch that will quickly leave you turning pages!
Now for the all important question ......would I reccomended The Daughter??
Answer ......... 100%.... YES!!.... A Must Read for 2018!!

The Daughter (Kindle Edition) by Lucy Dawson is the first thing I have read by this author and this is a great psychological thriller that gripped me from the very start.
So I am trying to be as vague as possible with this review to avoid spoiling this thrilling piece of fiction as I feel explaining the plot too much will do just that, so I'm just going to give you my personal impressions of The Daughter.
So first, I wasn't aware of what was going to occur at the beginning so this hit me completely out of left field and left me in shocked disbelief.
To continue The daughter portrays its characters in all their flawed glory and I'm sure each of us can find at least one individual here to identify with, or at least find one to resemble an acquaintance we know.
And as the tension mounted and the terror campaign intensified, I was holding my breath in anticipation and also a somewhat fearful fascination.
The Daughter itself I found wasn't completely unique and at times it seemed quite predictable but during each new experience, you felt an almost stomach-churning dread right alongside Jess as shes made to somehow pay for what someone sees as her past guilt.
Like she hasn't suffered enough.
Jess even seeming at times to almost accept the mantle of blame like an atonement she really shouldn't have to feel.
I did kinda guess the perp and I was silently screaming at Jess to catch on and dig her head out the sand, this I found didn't affect my enjoyment of The Daughter, I almost felt like I was watching a movie, the only thing missing was the popcorn and the TV of course.
In fact, this would be fantastic on the big screen.
In conclusion, this was an excellent piece of fiction I enjoyed immensely and I would definitely recommend if you are a psychological thriller junkie like me.
Although somewhat predictable this didn't disappoint.

Part one of The Daughter is set in 1999. Twenty four year old Jess is married to Ben and they have one daughter called Beth. One morning Jess is in a hurry to take Beth to school, outside the schoolgate a woman cycles by and tells Jess that God loves Beth.
At break time Beth is playing with her best friend Cara when she dies instantly from a fall from a climbing frame. Before Beth was born Jess had a short affair with a married man. Although Ben was pleased and married Jess instantly she was always uncertain who the father was. Feeling guilty about Ben's grief she leaves him and later ends up in Australia
Part two begins 17 years later. Jess is living back in the UK and is happily married to Ed and they have a son 2 year old James.
However Jess's past come back to haunt her, someone breaks into her house and turns all her clocks to the time Beth died. Sandrine her nanny, is on her way out one night when someone cycles by and tells her God loves her. Then one afternoon a mirror falls on the floor nearly killing James. Jess becomes convinced that someone has returned from her past to punish her, but why now?
This was a difficult review to write because I did not want to spoil the story. Lucy Dawson weaved an well thought out storyline. There were twists and turns a plenty and at different times I thought two of the other characters were the culprit. I felt sorry for Jess who had to make the terrible decision to leave Ben to protect him.
Unfortunately I guessed the culprit long before the end of the story. I forgive the author because the revelations once the culprit was revealed shocked me to the core.
I recommend this book to anyone who likes a good psychological thriller.

Another terrific 5-star book by Lucy Dawson.
"The Daughter" begins with the tragic death of a 5-year-old girl on a school playground.
Seventeen years after this horrific accident, someone taunts the grief-stricken mother with memories of her daughter.
Who is terrorizing this bereaved mother, 17 years after the fact?
"The Daughter" is a poignant story about relationships, healing, trust, and resilience.
It's also a book about obsessions.
Although I guessed the book's major twist, the book kept me in suspense, from beginning to end.
The book was exceptionally well-written, fast-paced, and impossible to put down.
I listened to the audiobook and Rachel Atkins did an outstanding job with the narration.
This was a 2018 book that somehow escaped my radar.
I am hooked on Lucy Dawson and look forward to listening to her future titles.

The start of The Daughter was fantastic. It was chilling, emotional and extremely hard-hitting and one more chapter resulted in me reading it for ages before finally going to bed. I imagine it will be difficult for readers to not be affected somehow by the opening to this story.
Sadly, things only went downhill from there. Even though she had just lost her child, I disliked Jessica because I can’t feel sympathy for a woman who had an affair that resulted in her having a child that wasn’t her husbands. To lie to a man like that about a child being his is probably one of the worst things a woman can do and I hate all this ‘oh but it might be his child..’ when clearly it isn’t. That said, putting all that to one side Lucy did portray Jess as a grieving woman quite well and with having to add into the mix that she was a cheat and was still trying to prevent Ben from finding out, it did add some excitement to the story. Unfortunately there were never any moments that I began to like Jess. Her new life I felt was undeserved and how her wet drip of a new husband just accepted her past was beyond me. She also kept secrets and only told people what she wanted them to hear. Whilst I guess this is probably true of a lot of us, these are still traits that are hard to witness in a main character when ordinarily I would want to sympathise with or at least like the person I was going to be spending the majority of the book with.
Now, read on at your peril because there may be some minor spoilers but I worked out very early on, pretty much as soon as I found out Jess had somebody after her as some kind of revenge plan who it would be. It is just so obvious and then even more so later on in the story when another character arrives. Plus even when it all came out and I rolled my eyes at how predictable everything was, the ending of the actual book was as flat as a pancake. It could have been so much more thrilling, as could the lead up to the big reveal. Literally the suspense just disappeared. The biggest problem for me is the book’s title. That’s the biggest giveaway of the whole story and I honestly think it needs a different title because it just gives away too much.
I’m a little disappointed that I worked everything out because the actual story itself could have been great. And, it probably will be great to those who don’t work the twists out (but if you don’t you must be new to this genre). Lucy’s writing is strong and she does manage to create some good suspense, there’s a real eclectic mix of characters and she captures the emotions of them all incredibly well. This is definitely a book I could see being the next big TV drama, I just hate that I worked everything out so soon because even though I was still gripped to the book, part of the reason I was gripped was because I wanted to be wrong. I wanted a twist to come from nowhere and completely surprise me, sadly it didn’t and I can only rate a book mostly on how much I enjoyed it and when you work out all of the main twists of a psychological thriller then that lessens the enjoyment you can take from it.
I would definitely read another book by Lucy Dawson in the future and I would recommend The Daughter to fans of psychological thrillers however I will be surprised if, like me, seasoned readers of the genre don’t see the twists coming from a mile away.

Even though she had just lost her child, I disliked Jessica because I can’t feel sympathy for a woman who had an affair that resulted in her having a child that wasn’t her husbands. To lie to a man like that about a child being his is probably one of the worst things a woman can do and I hate all this ‘oh but it might be his child..’ when clearly it isn’t. That said, putting all that to one side Lucy did portray Jess as a grieving woman quite well and with having to add into the mix that she was a cheat and was still trying to prevent Ben from finding out, it did add some excitement to the story. Unfortunately there were never any moments that I began to like Jess. Her new life I felt was undeserved and how her wet drip of a new husband just accepted her past was beyond me. She also kept secrets and only told people what she wanted them to hear. Whilst I guess this is probably true of a lot of us, these are still traits that are hard to witness in a main character when ordinarily I would want to sympathise with or at least like the person I was going to be spending the majority of the book with.
Now, read on at your peril because there may be some minor spoilers but I worked out very early on, pretty much as soon as I found out Jess had somebody after her as some kind of revenge plan who it would be. It is just so obvious and then even more so later on in the story when another character arrives. Plus even when it all came out and I rolled my eyes at how predictable everything was, the ending of the actual book was as flat as a pancake. It could have been so much more thrilling, as could the lead up to the big reveal. Literally the suspense just disappeared. The biggest problem for me is the book’s title. That’s the biggest giveaway of the whole story and I honestly think it needs a different title because it just gives away too much.
I’m a little disappointed that I worked everything out because the actual story itself could have been great. And, it probably will be great to those who don’t work the twists out (but if you don’t you must be new to this genre). Lucy’s writing is strong and she does manage to create some good suspense, there’s a real eclectic mix of characters and she captures the emotions of them all incredibly well. This is definitely a book I could see being the next big TV drama, I just hate that I worked everything out so soon because even though I was still gripped to the book, part of the reason I was gripped was because I wanted to be wrong. I wanted a twist to come from nowhere and completely surprise me, sadly it didn’t and I can only rate a book mostly on how much I enjoyed it and when you work out all of the main twists of a psychological thriller then that lessens the enjoyment you can take from it.
I would definitely read another book by Lucy Dawson in the future and I would recommend The Daughter to fans of psychological thrillers however I will be surprised if, like me, seasoned readers of the genre don’t see the twists coming from a mile away.

When you start a book that’s been written by Lucy Dawson you just know your hearts going to be torn, broken and sometimes put back together yet, not always.
This Mom has a secret. This mom has lost her daughter in an horrific accident at school.
There lies a return of her past.
I listened to this on audio and found it so emotional and touching.
Yet, there’s several stings in the tail as this story progresses and a twist.
If you reveal truths, just who suffers?

3 hours ago I started The Daughter, and I am now sitting here gasping for breath, having not been able to move or put my kindle down or acknowledge any part of the real world for those three hours as I read this completely addictive and unputdownable book.
The first part is very emotional, and shows just what depth Lucy Dawson has with her writing, I was almost in tears at parts of it, and then as the story moves up to to the present day, it becomes creepier and at no point are you really sure just what the cause of it all is.
I certainly didn't expect or predict any part of the thrilling finale, which is what has left me so amazed at the story.
I don't think I can say any more about the plot than the blurb has, as I know I would give away the wrong information. What I will say is that every book I read by Lucy Dawson is more and more impressive, and I can't believe that I read this so fast and in one sitting, when I'm fairly sure I had other things I needed to do instead!
The Daughter will take you on a fabulous journey and make you wonder just what lengths you may be prepared to go to, to protect a loved one. It has reached under my skin and completely unsettled me, so I am completely blaming the author if I don't sleep this evening.
Although its probably a bit early in the year to state this, I suspect this could be one of the psychological thrillers of the year, I am that impressed by how little I was able to predict, and was just swept away in the story. In fact that first part makes me think the author could probably turn her hand to women's fiction just as well too.

Seventeen years ago, something happened to Jess’s daughter Beth. Since the book description doesn’t give away what that is, I won’t either. Jess has since moved away but it seems the past has caught up with her once again and someone has decided Jess hasn’t yet been punished enough.
I am not known to be an emotional person (although these days, that’s rather debatable) but the beginning of this story is so utterly heartbreaking and devastating that it left me with a massive lump in my throat and nearly brought a tear to my eye, thinking I might need to go find some tissues. These first few chapters will suck you in like a vortex and rip out your heart. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Unfortunately for me, I figured out quite early on what was going on and who was responsible for taunting Jess. Maybe I just read too many books in this genre but I felt it was rather obvious. However, that didn’t take anything away from my enjoyment. Ultimately, this “thing” that happened in the past (vague, I know) has had an impact on quite a few people, not just Jess and that’s what stood out for me in this story. Actions have consequences and they often affect more people than you realise.
This is a gripping and compelling page-turner about family, grief, secrets, guilt and obsession. I can’t say I particularly warmed to any of the characters, except maybe Ben, but I could sympathise with them which is down to Lucy Dawson’s fantastic writing and her ability to bring these characters to live. Jess, in my most humble opinion, made some mistakes and bad decisions but I could always somehow understand where she was coming from.
I’d say The Daughter was a pretty new experience for me. I can’t quite remember reading such a tearjerking psychological thriller before but it worked like a charm and I look forward to reading more by Lucy Dawson in future.

I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked this. After Jessica’s 5 year old daughter’s death, she faces uncertainty as she’s threatened to leave. She leaves her husband and her life behind but 17 years later her past comes to haunt her. Someone out there wants her to pay. I liked they mystery even though I kinda had it figured out but there were still some surprises. It kept me entertained and it helped me through my reading slump. I will definitely check more out by Lucy Dawson.

This book had such potential but was let down by a devastatingly bad narrative and over simplified dialogue. I actually enjoyed the first couple of chapters and was looking forward to finding out where the story would take me, but unfortunately the writing style began to annoy me and I felt the plot weaken the further I went along.
Conversations between characters were repetitive and read like a soap opera script as opposed to a psychological domestic thriller. I appreciate some artistic license on the authors part but not to the point where every sentence begins with the speaker addressing their partner by name. It just sounded very false, and distracted from the overall theme of the book.
Not author I would actively seek out again.

There are three parts to this story. The prologue is in the first person of Beth, a five year old girl, and what happened to her on that fateful day in the playground.

I was given an ecopy of this book by Kim at Bookouture in exchange for an honest review. This is something I'm more than happy to do.
Oh my giddy aunt - what an addictively captivating book, I read this on the last day of 2017 and was totally gripped, so much so I kept delaying getting ready to go out and celebrate the New Year. Just one more chapter......, the pages practically turned themselves.
Lucy Dawson certainly knows how to grab your attention. The story begins with a gut wrenching tragedy, how do you pick yourself up from a situation that would be every parents living nightmare?! The storyline literally explodes off the page, leaving so much debris in its wake - sifting through the remains is gut wrenching and sheer torture. Jess and husband Ben are plunged into an abyss and Jess in particular can't seem to find a way to crawl out. It's not the first trauma she's had to endure and the sheer pain and tragedy of this story are palpable as the past meets the present. Strange things keep happening but who was responsible and why? These are the questions I tried to second guess.
The twists and turns of this story are like shooting stars, one after another exploding across the pages as I gasped at the sheer horror, torment and reality as Jess tries to pick her way through the debris of her life as bit by bit she is sent mad with torment.
I formed opinions and ideas about each and every character and tried without success to second guess how they all fitted together in this maze of hurt, anger, deceit, revenge love and hate. This is a book that will touch your heart, will make you gasp and cry out, the sheer tension and emotion fizzes from the pages.

To distance herself from the guilt she feels, she starts over. With a new husband and a young son, she still tries to make peace with herself.
But someone doesn't want her to forget the mistakes she has made or forgive herself for them. They don't think she's suffered enough. Someone is terrifying her and her family.
The first chapters are a heart-wrenching, one tissue won't be enough, tearjerker. And then 17 years later the fright begins. Who would want to hurt her? Ex-husband? Ex-Lover? Present Husband? Jess can't believe any of them would intentionally set out to hurt her.
This is a well written psychological thriller with twists and turns that don't quit. The ending is a never-saw-it-coming surprise. This is a compelling read that you won't want to miss.

Excellent!
I really enjoyed this book. Definitely one that grabs you on the first page and doesn't let go til the end.
The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because i figured out right away who was coming for Jessica. That being said, it did not make the book any less enjoyable. In fact there were many times i doubted myself.
The climax at the end didn't play out the way i was expecting it to. I was pleasantly surprised by the twist. I do have to say i feel the character of Natalia was pointless. The purpose she filled would've been better coming from either Louise or Cara, in my opinion.
I love the ending. Especially the very last paragraph.

Well,after reading the other reviews of this book,I can definitely say that I am in the minority here.The synopsis and tag line sounded really promising but by the time I had finished reading it I just felt rather disappointed.Where was the shocking twist that I was promised and as for the ending,that just caused me to sigh and roll my eyes in exasperation at a certain characters behaviour.I also didn't like the main protagonist Jessica very much therefore I felt no connection or sympathy for her character.
The story is split into two parts and starts off seventeen years previously when Jessica was married to Ben.Something terrible happens to their five year old daughter Beth,the aftermath of which is heartbreaking and very very sad.The second part is set in the present where we find that Jessica has done everything in her power to move on with her life and now has a two year old son called James.She still harbours feelings of guilt over her part in what happened all those years ago.Only someone has decided that Jessica hasn't suffered enough and has started terrorizing Jess in her own home.The intimidation escalates and culminates in a final confrontation where the identity of Jessica's tormentor is revealed.Unfortunately I had worked out who her tormentor was earlier in the story.I was hoping it was another character,I mean after the way Jess had treated this person it would have been understandable if they had decided to get back at her in some way.
The Daughter is well written and has a cast of believable but mostly not very likeable characters.I never felt like not finishing the book,it just left me feeling disappointed and underwhelmed but that's just my opinion,I'm sure other readers will love it.

I started this book in audio format and returned it to listen to Becoming as it was so popular at my public library, and I needed to maintain my place in the queue.
I returned to it a couple of years later at 35% and in true Suzanne fashion, I pretty much had to finished what I started.
I forgot most of it and I went through the motions of a disappearance and then a stalking type scenario with the mother that is bereft of a lost child.
Neat ending, lots of forgiveness and acceptance from this same mother; mental health is touched on in this [for me] standard fare thriller. Not helped by the fact I forgot about what happened in the first third!

A story that should come with a warning that if you are a mother, it would rip you to pieces. The first few chapters got me teary-eyed and that is happening after really a long time so for only that, this book deserves all the 5*. Jessica's character is someone you can relate to, coz even when she's lying her reasons are from a kind heart. If like me you have read a lot of thrillers, the twist can be guessed at but the author simply manages to bring in another twist that leaves us astounded. I didn't honestly see that coming. Brilliant suspense throughout.

I’ve read a few books by Lucy Dawson before but her move to Bookouture has obviously brought out the best in her because The Daughter is my absolute favourite book of hers so far! It messed with my emotions from that horrific opening prologue to that very last paragraph both of which made me a blubbing, snotty mess!!
Anyone who has children, or who works with them, will be struggling to hold back the tears as the first few chapters detail what exactly happened to Beth. I don’t want to go into any details about the tragedy that takes place but be warned that the way Lucy Dawson leads up to it will have your heart pounding as you see where she is heading. I wasn’t expecting to feel such an intense level of heartbreak as I did at the situation Jess found herself in. That first third of the book was truly devastating and I felt completely traumatised as I watched Jess try to deal with what had happened to her perfect family. As the book moved forward to show Jess and her family after their new start, I desperately wanted them to have their “happy ever after” but it becomes obvious that someone hasn’t forgotten the past and is determined to torment Jess but how far do they plan on going? As further secrets tumble out of the past and into the present, it looks like Jess has to fight to protect, not only herself, but also those closest to her.
I can’t remember the last time a psychological thriller made me cry so much! This probably has one of the most upsetting prologues that I’ve ever read and I really did get goosebumps as the narrative then flashed back, building up to what happens with a creeping sense of dread. The characterisation is spot on here, not everyone was likeable but they were all so intensely watchable! I was gripped throughout by their relationships with each other as I tried to work out who to trust! There is a slowly increasing tension that builds to an almost unbearable intensity as we find out who has been tormenting Jess and why. And the ending was perfectly pitched in my eyes-I definitely wasn’t disappointed with how Lucy Dawson finished off this incredible tale.
I absolutely 100% recommend The Daughter! I fell head over heels in love with the cleverly crafted storyline and felt like an emotional mess by the end of it! And even though I did work out who was behind the series of onslaughts on Jess and her family, it didn’t for one second spoil my enjoyment of this unputdownable page turner.

I absolutely 100% recommend The Daughter! I fell head over heels in love with the cleverly crafted storyline and felt like an emotional mess by the end of it! And even though I did work out who was behind the series of onslaughts on Jess and her family, it didn’t for one second spoil my enjoyment of this unputdownable page turner.
Definitely one to add to your TBR pile!
