Zack Whedon (born August 14, 1979) is an American screenwriter ('Deadwood', 'Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog' and 'Fringe') and Comic Book writer ('Dr. Horrible and Other Horrible Stories', 'Terminator: 2029 to 1984' and Firefly/serenity's 'The Shepherd's Tale').
He graduated in 2002 with a film degree from Wesleyan University where he served as president of the Eclectic Society. Zack is from a family of writers: he is the son of screenwriter Tom Whedon, grandson of screenwriter John Whedon, and the brother of screenwriter/musician Jed Whedon and producer/director/writer Joss Whedon.
His first professional work in television was as a production assistant on his brother Joss Whedon's series, 'Angel'.
He is best known for his work, alongside his brothers Joss Whedon and Jed Whedon, on the parody musical 'Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog' which he co-created and co-wrote.
Some fun little short stories set in the Dr. Horrible world. For those not in the know, go watch Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog first before reading this book. It's these fun shorts Joss Whedon, Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion, and Felicia Day put together during the Writer's Strike of 2008. Most of these stories were printed before back in 2010 under Dr. Horrible and Other Horrible Stories. This new edition includes a one-shot Joss wrote last year. It's well worth picking up if you haven't read it recently.
Received a review copy from Dark Horse and Edelweiss. All thoughts are my own and in no way influenced by the aforementioned.
A collection of short stories each focused on different characters from the Doctor Horrible web series. They are mostly written by Zack Whedon, who co-wrote the original series together with Joss, Jed and Maurissa (and wrote a bunch of quality TV on his own, like Halt and Catch Fire, Deadwood and Fringe), so the stories feel like part of the same universe and are enjoyable and fun to read. Last year’s superb Dr. Horrible, Best Friends Forever one-shot is also included here and it’s definitely the best story of the bunch, written by Joss himself with a spark of inspiration rarely seen in his most recent works. Overall it’s a really nice little collection, and most Dr Horrible fans will really enjoy this.
(Full disclosure: I received a free e-ARC for review through Edelweiss.)
Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog is a three-part musical comedy-drama series that was written by Joss Whedon, Zack Whedon, Jed Whedon, and Maurissa Tancharoen and released online in 2008. It stars Nathan Fillion as the do-gooding but self-aggrandizing hero, Captain Hammer; Neil Patrick Harris as his Nice Guy (tm), wanna-be nemesis, Dr. Evil; and Felicia Day as the kind-hearted but down-on-her-luck Penny, who's caught between the two. It's a sometimes-silly, maybe-feminist send-up of the superhero trope, though in light of recent events I do feel a little weird applying that term to anything Joss Whedon has touched ("feminist," not "superhero"). The web series reportedly earned Whedon more money than the first Avengers movie, and spawned several comic books.
Chances are, if you're reading this review, then you already know all this, but a little refresher never hurt.
So the first edition of this trade paperback, Dr. Horrible and Other Horrible Stories, collected the original one-shot comic book ("Dr. Horrible"), the three digital comics from MySpace Dark Horse Presents ("Captain Hammer: Be Like Me!," "Moist: Humidity Rising," and "Penny: Keep Your Head Up"), and featured an all-new story about the Evil League of Evil ("The Evil League of Evil"). The second edition contains all of the above, as well as the comic "Best Friends Forever," released last year for the show's tenth anniversary. The only really "new" material to speak of is the original script for "Best Friends Forever," which is underwhelming at best.
If you don't already own any of the Dr. Horrible comic books, sure, this is the one to get. But if you've been buying them all along, there's no reason to drop more money on the second edition.
As far as the *actual* content goes, the only comic in the bunch I didn't really care for is "Moist: Humidity Rising." "Captain Hammer: Be Like Me!" is fun enough, and who can object to more Nathan Fillion, if even in cartoon form? "The Evil League of Evil" is a comedy of errors, and "Penny: Keep Your Head Up" was relatable AF. "Best Friends Forever," in which Captain Hammer and Dr. Horrible form a weird and unlikely friendship thanks to some nefarious goings-on, is probably my favorite of the bunch.
I gave the first edition 4/5 stars when I read it way back in the day. I guess I was just disappointed that the new edition didn't really add anything to the canon.
It was okay. There are some nice nudge-wink-mentions that tie into small world-building from the 45-min musical, but the majority of this book: didn't tell a satisfying story, didn't have impressive art. I'm having trouble imagining who I'd ever recommend this to: a huge Joss/Dr. Horrible fan who simply has to know all they can--that's pretty much all I got. You're almost certainly safe to let this one pass you by.
Plot wise some cute stories, I was not a huge fan of the artwork. I did not read the script at the end as it was basically the same as the last story. I think this would work great as an actual live action set of shorts with the original Dr Horrible's blog.
As spin-offs go, this isn't bad. Highlights of the collection are "The Evil League of Evil" and "Best Friends Forever" (the latter taking place after the web series). It made me want to rewatch the series so good for it.
The narratives of the individual stories jump around a lot, and the art isn't really my style. However, any added Dr. Horrible content is a bonus in my eyes, and if you're a fan of the original miniseries, you'll probably get a kick out of this anyway!
I rewatched Dr. Horrible recently and was reminded just how good it is. It sent me down a research hole to review how it was made. I then discovered that this existed and could not resist ordering it immediately. It shows some origin stories and side stories and even a sequel. Each story has a different artist so there are very different styles showcased. Some were better than others. A large portion of the ending pages are the script of the last comic as well so it is not as long as I thought it was going to be.
