Not until she woke up with one trying to kill her. But now she knows the truth. The paranormal world is real and all sorts of weird magical beings like vampires, elves, werewolves not only exist but live among us. In fact, she is one of those weird paranormal beings.
Now with the help of her new friends in the Magical Bureau of Investigation she'll learn how to use her magical powers and hopefully survive the next attack.
I enjoyed this book. It is very fast-paced, sometime to the point of glossing over interactions or over-simplifying the plot, but it is a tremendous amount of fun. I liked the characters, there was a lot of action (many things blow up in a spectacular fashion and/or massive fight scenes.), I felt like I was in an Avengers movie. The magic system is fairly involved, and Ms. Mason did a good job having Kat have to discover her powers. There is not an obvious romantic interest, though some possibilities. I liked the fact the Kat did not feel the need to hop into bed with the first hottie she saw. She is independent, and does not need a partner to define her.
This was a fun, quick read and kept my interest well-enough that I stayed up late to finish.
There's a lot to be said about keeping the interest of someone who reads a lot of fantasy, particularly urban fantasy since it's such a small world, and this book really did. The story was original enough that I wasn't bored, the characters snarky and capable. But I felt as though that the character interactions were immature at times and to nicey nice, even when they were rightfully angry about something it wasn't taken seriously. Get mad, punch someone in the face! I will read the next one but I hope they ditch the happy pills and have some more genuine emotional reactions.
Katherine Dark was put into foster care as an infant, so had no idea she was a paranormal. Until just before her 21 birthday. She could legally drink, and thought she had when she found a demon in her apartment. Ugly thing, and she managed to kill it with strength she didn't have the day before. Then she called the crazy guy that told to something was going to happen to her. Btw recruited her to the MBI Magical Bureau of Investigation. And that just started things of. She fast tracked to Agent and now someone's trying to kill her. But she's got help in some friends.
The first 6 chapters were strong. Really good introduction of the MC, plot points worked well. The first paragraph could use a little polishing, but that’s being picky.
Then chapter 7 started. Info-dump by firehose. MC is rapidly on her way to being OP. And her best frenemy is a snarky sidekick that...now is the narrator in chapter 8. I was barely hanging in there with one character and you changed the channel!?!
There is some major problems with this book, but the worst is the author didn’t follow the Show, Not Tell principal. The books skips forwards several weeks, then talks about what had happened during those weeks with a new character. This happens several times throughout the book and it was so annoying that I couldn’t finish it. I did skip ahead and skim the book to see if it improved and it didn’t.
A lot of action, magic, and fascinating world building. As an agent for the MBI Kat's learning how different her world view has been. Secrets, spies, and lies permeate through the specialized unit. However, once a street fighter, always a street fighter except, now with magic of her own, Kat is kicking butt. Join the team of interesting characters and mysterious adventure, it's worth the read.
I really enjoy this series. I immediately downloaded the next installment. The only reason I gave it a 4 star is because there are multiple grammar/spelling errors. Sometimes it was a bit distracting. The characters, the world is wonderful. I love the fast pace action. Yes there is a bit of growth needed in this author; but saying that almost every first book from an author is a bit rough. This series has a ton of potential and I am excited to see where these characters.
Loved it! Ms. Lane is a voice to listen to. Her strong kick a$$ female lead is irreverent, lives by her own code of right and wrong and only apologizes where necessary. The secondary characters are so well developed you can't help invest in them. I just picked up book two and will settle in to continue the saga. Thanks Ms. Lane for the hours of reading pleasure!
Wow, I really liked this book. Great worldbuilding, an action-filled, fast-packed story line, and a wonderful main female character-- strong, yet flawed. The supporting cast are great also. I loved the writing style and will look for more books by this author.
I enjoyed the characters. But, the story seemed rushed and so the background scenery was a little thin. The bad guy got it in the end, but the ending seemed a little abrupt. However I’ll be in line for the next installment.
