Ferryman #3

Outcasts

Rate this book
Tristan and Dylan have escaped death and conquered destiny. Nothing is stopping them from being together.

But every action has a consequence, and their exile to the real world has caused an imbalance in the afterlife. It's owed two souls – and it wants them back.

When the world of the dead claims Dylan's parents to restore the balance, Dylan and Tristan are offered a terrible bargain: stay together and condemn innocent souls to death, or return to the wasteland to take their place and be separated. Forever.

Are they willing to make the ultimate sacrifice?

The stunning final instalment of Dylan and Tristan's epic love story, Outcasts is the much-anticipated follow-up to the award-winning Ferryman, and heart-pounding sequel Trespassers.

With more than two million copies sold worldwide, Ferryman is a cult sensation in China, staying in the top 10 bestseller chart for three years before securing a Hollywood movie deal in early 2018.

Claire McFall's work is, in essence, all about first love and difficult decisions. Her novels take straightforward romantic narratives and hurl them into unusual and extreme settings, blurring accepted genre boundaries and creating new sub-genres of her own. She then charts her characters' reactions to these unfamiliar situations and the new and confusing feelings that beset them in a hyper-real, engaging, deeply poignant and literary manner. Claire is a former teacher from Scotland who now lives in sunny Colorado with her husband, two children, and pooch, Jazz.

Dylan dan Tristan makin lengket aja dan tak terpisahkan. Sedangkan Susanna dan Jack walaupun sering bertengkar tapi ikatan mrk makin kuat. Dan anehnya, Joan & James, ortu Dylan, jg semakin akrab walaupun mrk msh menganggap Tristan sbg penyusup.

Klimaksnya yaaahh... Bersama-sama. Gara² si Inkuisitor yg gak rela melihat semuanya hidup bahagia, jd hrs ada yg dikorbankan. Siapakah itu?

Endingnya agak maksa ya mnrt gw. Ya terserah lah. Yg penting HEA drpd mrk terkatung-katung kan?

Drpd gw spoiler, lebih baik baca deh. Utk ukuran YA romance, lumayan deh. Gak ada konflik yg bikin mikir jungkir balik. Mengalir aja. Tapi gak ada spesial-nya, kecuali kalian penyuka hero yg bucin, nah Tristan ini cocok sekali utk Anda 😍

I was possibly a little harsh in my reviews of the first two in this trilogy, given that I've stuck with it all the way through the end. It's still young adult 'love conquers all' nonsense with a plot that doesn't make any sense at all if you think too hard about it, but I guess I have to admit that I enjoyed it!

I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. This is the third and final book in this series. I have read both Ferryman and Trespassers as well. I did not want to read this one because I did not Tristian and Dylan's love story to end, but I will not lie I could not get hold of this book fast enough. I had to read it a couple of times.  That is how good it was. Them leaving left an imbalance in the underworld and now the choice is in Tristian and Dylan's have to make a dark choice to stick together and curse souls to death or go back and be separated forever. I am still getting chills just thinking about it.

Ok this is more like it!
A lot more enjoyable than the second book and almost on par with the first.

This had a lot of what Trespassers was missing, the extreme high stakes, the heart-stopping terror, the whimsy... I really enjoyed Outcasts a lot.

This is definitely a highly unique trilogy. I can honestly say I’ve never read anything like it before.
It has some of your basic YA tropes, but the clever and imaginative world that McFall created really stands out as fresh and different from other series.

A truly satisfying conclusion.

Not something that will blow its readers out of the water but good enough.
The third and the last book in the series of Ferryman, Outcasts. I was eager to know what could possibly happen now that hasn’t already happened. I mean Dylan died, went through the wasteland, came back to wasteland, came back to life and brought a guest with her, someone followed in her footsteps and made a mess of things. She and her special friend made a deal to stay alive. Now what?
The starting of the book felt repeated and it was tough to trudge through the first few chapters. It was yet another ferryman ferrying yet another soul in the same old wasteland, same sulking and brooding Dylan and the very same head-over-heels Tristan but then things started getting interesting.
Also, in the beginning, it's one too many ferrymen going around but then Susanna and Jack come along to spice up the story.
Dylan and Tristan's routine felt a little boring and Dylan came out as a completely selfish and self-absorbed person for sacrificing Tristan’s life without so much as consent from him. As if she owns his life. What.the.hell, Dylan!
The book could have been a couple of chapters shorter had Dylan not dragged sending his parents back to the real world.
The writer could have confirmed if all went back to normal in the wasteland and what became of the inquisitor.
To conclude, it wasn’t mind-blowing but not a waste of time either. Could have lived without reading it but I am glad that did read it.
The way the book ended, there is a possibility of a next book. Saving the Wraiths? What say, Ms. Writer? Will you save the wraiths?

"He’d follow her anywhere – and protect her as best as he could – but if she wanted to walk down this path, she had to take the lead."

In Claire McFall’s “Outcasts”, the narrative transcends mere storytelling, venturing into the realm of existential inquiry and philosophical contemplation. The book prompts to ponder three questions: What choices define us if given the chance to relive life? What value do we place on life, death, and love? And what sacrifices are we willing to make for a second chance at life?

McFall intricately weaves a narrative that blurs the lines between the physical and spiritual realms, leaving readers to contemplate the mysteries of existence. The protagonists navigate a treacherous journey fraught with inner turmoil and external obstacles, mirroring the struggles inherent in the human condition.

McFall masterfully constructs a narrative that blurs the boundaries between reality and metaphor, challenging readers to discern the deeper truths hidden within the text. The wilderness, a recurring motif in the novel, becomes a metaphor for the human psyche, a vast and untamed landscape where the complexities of the soul are laid bare.

Central to the narrative is the enigmatic figure of the ferryman, a symbolic representation of the human condition and our perpetual quest for meaning and purpose. Through encounters with the ferryman, the characters confront their deepest fears and desires, ultimately coming to terms with the existential dilemmas that define their existence.

The novel draws inspiration from philosophical treatises and literary classics, weaving together strands of existentialism, absurdism, and transcendentalism to create a tapestry of thought-provoking ideas. From the existential angst of Sartre to the metaphysical musings of Camus, “Outcasts” pays homage to the rich tapestry of philosophical thought that has shaped human understanding throughout the ages.

The narrative draws inspiration from literary classics such as “The Waste Land” and “The Divine Comedy”, incorporating motifs of journey and redemption. Particularly noteworthy is the duality of the ferryman archetype, which evolves throughout the story, symbolizing the cyclical nature of existence and the interconnectedness of souls.

“Outcasts” is a philosophical treatise disguised as fiction. It leaves an indelible mark in mind, inspiring contemplation long after the final page has been turned.

**4.3 STARS**

OUTCASTS by Claire McFall is the third book in the Ferryman trilogy, a YA urban fantasy of sorts that straddles present-day Scotland and the afterlife. Tristan, Dylan, Susanna, and Jack have received their sentencing from the Inquisitor, but it’s not over. Weird occurrences are happening in both the real world and the Wasteland, all fallout from their previous actions. If the Inquisitor gets involved again, their chances at happily-ever-after may be over, but the choice of whether to fight for it or accept their fates is harder than they could have imagined.

Firstly, this book’s construction is pure quality. As someone who enjoys holding a physical book, I found this to be exceptional. The page size, layout, font, cover design, and paper choice all add something special. More importantly than that though, the story on the pages is the best of the series! I especially loved getting to spend time with Susanna and Jack, and seeing how their relationship evolved since the last book. Now, there's more vulnerability and openness between the two, which leads to a lot of raw and charged moments that help propel the story forward. I also like how McFall weaves their plot back in with Tristan and Dylan’s, playing with themes of predeterminism and free will.

Honestly, my main criticism is that there won’t be a fourth book! While I appreciate the end of OUTCASTS, I still have a lot of questions, particularly about the status of the Wasteland, if there have been more issues in the real world, what life looks like for the main characters now, and more. The ending felt a bit abrupt, considering what we’d already gone through with the characters. I genuinely believe there’s more story here, especially since the book leaves off with a potential new mission and purpose for the characters.

Overall, OUTCASTS is what made me fall in love with the series. I’d recommend this trilogy to anyone who is intrigued by the afterlife, romance, and harrowing adventures.

Objectively I should give this book a four star rating. But since my eyes are wet from ugly crying and since the emotions I felt while reading this story and having to say goodbye to these characters (and watching them saying goodbye to each other) were incredibly strong, this book has totally and absolutely deserved that fifth star too.

The plot isn’t that different from the previous two books. It’s actually more of a combination of the two of them. There are also no new exciting characters we get to know and grow close to. But maybe that’s exactly why the emotional part of this story is so strong and works so well.

The world building has been done in the previous two books. The mythology has been explained and made clear in the previous two books. We’ve gotten to know the characters and the characters have gotten to know each other. A lot has been happening and brewing and changing and growing and this book is the emotional pay off of all that.

I cried because I’ve grown close to these characters while reading these books. I cried because I didn’t want to let go. I cried because I connected with these characters, felt for these characters and really really didn’t want them to be and get hurt. The previous two books were, in the end, nothing but build up to make this one work and I loved every second, page and word of it.

This was such a heartwarming finale to the Ferryman series. Though it did feel a little short, I think mostly because the story is very self-contained; The characters were confined to small groups in a single setting for most of the book, and that can make it hard to gauge time and distances for the characters and the overall plot.

I wish the author had delved a little further into Tristan expressing his feelings towards Dylan's decision to sacrifice both of their lives for Dylan's parents… because I feel that was one avenue of the story that wasn't explored well and it could have given the book a little more depth and length to explore. It was obvious that Tristan wasn't okay with the decision, but he let it slide, and I think there should have been more conflict and conversation between Dylan and Tristan about the topic.

Overall though, I enjoyed the story, it felt wrapped up, and even though there are certainly some questions left unanswered, particularly about the thing in the lake, I'm happy with how the story went. It isn't my favorite story in the series, but I had fun reading it regardless.

i was hesitant to start because i wasn’t sure i’d be ready to see how this ends. and it took me a while to get ahold of it from the library but man this book is the absolute best thing i have ever read and i couldn’t have asked for a better ending to the series. since ferryman came out this series has been my favourite and i’ve read the first two books at least four times each, and upon seeing that there’s a finale i knew i had to read it. it’s 12:30 am and i am crying my eyes out because of this, i’m so happy dylan and tristan got what they deserved but i also don’t want this to end, not ever. the plot is so catchy and it’s impossible to put this book down once you start. i experience the same emotions that the characters feel, that’s how good this is. i loved it :’)

Awww. This book was just as good as book one, which is good because I struggled with book two. This is such a soft and soulful (no pun intended) trilogy. I absolutely loved Dylan and Tristan, but I didn’t expect to also fall in love with Susanna and Jack. They were both SUPER obnoxious characters in book two but did a complete 180 for me in this book. Ugh. I loved how the book wrapped the series up and the epilogue too. This is a really heartfelt YA series and I think it is definitely one more people should experience.

Read the 1st in the series its beautiful, really different, amazing world. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME ON BOOKS 2 AND 3.
I rarely give below a 3 the book has to be so so bad, i can enjoy most, and give the author credit for their time, their energy.
I do not understand why uou would sign a contract to write 3 books in a series when you know its only a 1books story. Why destroy such a beautiful story by adding that crap to it,
I'm very sorry if i cam across rude. 😊 🙏

I love this triology. And I love the end ♥️ finally Tristan and Dylan get the chance to be together. Tristan can get through the line because he has been in human life.
I just wishes Claire explain some question-puzzle in the book, like why ferryman live the way like they were punished from something? If wraiths aren’t human anymore how can they feel the music? And how Jack can turn in to human again?

this made me cry. the end of the series 🥹🥹🥹 it was beautifully written and everything was tied up in the perfect way. i love jack and susanna, who redeemed herself. they might be my favorites. and dylan and tristan ❤️❤️❤️ perfect end to a unique, romantic, youthful, aesthetic trilogy. lovely job of the author!

3.5/5 ★

I am so disappointed with this book. The first book was so strong, I read it so fast. The second book was ok. This book just tanked. There were so many different things that could have happened and it just fell short. I finished it and was like is that it? So disappointed.
