Rate this book
Welcome to the world of Nocturnia, where darkness reigns supreme, glitter is terrifying, and unicorns are the stuff of nightmares!

In their race against time, they begin to realize things in Nocturnia may not be quite what they seem...

But when Tangine's mom, Queen Fairyweather goes missing they must brave the journey to the terrifying Kingdom of the Light. With fairies and angel-kittens lurking around every corner, who can they trust? And will they finally uncover the real villain keeping the kingdoms of Light and Dark as mortal enemies?

Fantasy is a favorite genre of mine. There is little I can find wrong when there is a world filled with magic and wonderful characters. Amelia Fang and her friends are delightful and I'm glad that these books introduced me to them. I did not listen to the audio CD I was lucky enough to ready an Advance Reader's Copy of the first two books in this delightful series.

The Barbaric Ball is coming up and Amelia is not a fan of this event since she is the only child that attends. She really wishes her friends, Florence, a rare breed of Yeti and Grimaldi who is death but as a child only handles small deaths. Amelia's father, had been friends with the King of Nocturnia but they have had no contact since the Queen disappeared. When King Vladimir makes an unannounced visit to the Fang household letting them know he would attend the ball with his son, Tangine. Tangine has also begun to attend the school with Amelia and her friends. He is not a very nice person and is quite spoiled. He takes Amelia's pet pumpkin and during the Ball Amelia plans on rescuing her pet. Along the way the two become friends.

Glitteropolis is a place Amelia has not ever visited but when she finds a paper describing it she is certain that is where they can find the queen. Vladimir, Tangine, Florence and Grimaldi head off to Glitteropolis with plans to save the queen. The group ends up separated which causes them to have different adventures. Things are rough at the beginning since the people of Glitteropolis are just as afraid of the people of Nocturnia as the people of Nocturnia are of them. Through their shared experiences all learn to accept differences.

Amelia, her friends, the queen and king are now ready to help others learn the importance of acceptance of those who may seem so very different from us

These are really, really cute. It's been fun to talk to my daughter about reversals of tropes (in this case, light and dark) as well as how much we love Florence.

Cute fantasy book with enough pictures (and disgusting parts) to appeal to young readers, especially the late elementary crowd. The first book is about Amelia Fang and her friends, helping her get her pet pumpkin away from "spoiled sprout" Prince Tangine. The second book is about the friends on an adventure to find a Creature of the Light, something to be feared in their kingdom - or is it? I liked the second book better. My 9-yo liked them so much she's read both books a second time already and would love to read the next book(s)!
