On 12 March 1938, Nazi Germany annexed Austria in what was known as the Anschluss. While there were Austrians who thought it was a good idea, many thought otherwise. Henry Farley’s "No Time To Play" is an historical novel, fictionalised but based to a large extent on his mother’s own experiences during World War II. The heroine of the story is Mitzi, a sixteen-year-old who is introduced to the horrors of Nazi occupation when the family of her best friend is taken away, never to be seen again. Their only crime was to have been Jewish. Mitzi decides to assist the Austrian Resistance. Despite her tender years, she secures a position with the railway company, which enables her to travel across Austria and even into other countries. When she comes across two young children who are deemed to be Jewish because their mother was part Jewish, she is determined to help them escape. Her aim is to get them across the border into Switzerland. Hot on her trial is Obersturmführer Kirchner, a rather objectionable Austrian who has joined the Gestapo. The journey is fraught with danger with some who help the young trio paying with their lives.

"No Time To Play" is interesting for a number of reasons. It is partly true, it relates to the author’s own family, it is set, unusually, in Austria and the main character, the heroine, is an exceptionally brave sixteen-year-old. Sadly, the writing itself lets the story down a little. There is an overuse of uppercase letters, an underuse of punctuation and too many breaches of the golden rule of writing – show don’t tell. Sometimes the narrative goes on endlessly and you just wish the author would break it up with more dialogue. But that said, it is still a book that is hard to put down as the well-defined characters carry the story along.
