How often does not having enough energy get in the way of what you want to achieve? If you had an abundance of energy, what things would you do differently in your life? Would you start a business, prioritise time for yourself, choose to study something new, or would your relationships be different? How would you impact the world around you?
It’s easy to pass off feeling tired and put it down to a multitude of things in our life – your job, your children, your relationships, but there is an enormous array of factors that might be draining you of energy – and often without you even realising it.
For example, just sitting for more than an hour produces biochemical reactions in the body that make you feel more lethargic. Also, having open loops churning over in your mind impacts your body in a similar way to having too many apps open on your phone, flattening the battery and draining you of energy.
In this ground-breaking new book Dr Libby uses her unique three-pillar approach and explores the biochemical, nutritional and emotional factors that impact your energy, addressing such things as:
Brain chemicals: your brain chemicals can have a significant impact on whether you’re able to approach your day with energy and understanding their intricate role in your energy can make such a difference Food: we eat for energy but often find that the very foods that are supposed to give us energy, actually end up depleting us further Sleep: why after a long sleep we can still wake up tired, even though sleep is supposed to be a great energy restorer Teenagers: understand the tiredness that can begin in teenage years and why some people never recover from this teenage fatigue Expectations: the expectations you place on yourself can be incredibly depleting of your energy – but finding out why can be life changing Other people: conversations with certain people have the power to either drain your energy or inspire you; learn how to identify this before it happens Coffee: can either help or hinder your energy, learn how to spot the difference Movement: when you move regularly, your body gives you more energy - even when you’re resting Allergies: that annoying sniffle you get each spring is actually stealing more of your energy than you might realise Posture: choosing one posture over another can have a significant impact on your energy levels everyday – find out what serves you Blood oxygen: is your blood getting the oxygen it needs and, if not, what you can do about it Age: does your age really impact on your energy in the ways we are lead to believe it does? From teenagers through to adults, find out where your energy goes and how you can reclaim the vitality you once had. Empowered with the information in this book, learn simple but powerful strategies to help liberate yourself from exhaustion and live a life with more energy.
This book was more technical than I expected. In saying that though it became easier to read as I progressed. I need to read it again to really get the benefit. It helped making notes as I read through it. Dr Libby really has some answers for those of us who experience unnecessary fatigue. For me things like caffeine and issues with my liver stood out. There is no real remedy around caffeine other than stop drinking it or greatly reduce the amount you drink. As for the liver, try to not eat or drink substances like alcohol, caffeine, processed foods. She also has some obvious remedies like moving. She recommends moving every hour if you have a sedentary job. She also recommends regular exercise ( nothing new there). It all make sense. There is so much more to this book than I have laid out here but as I said I need to read it again to digest the rest. I recommend this book to anyone suffering fatigue who wants to know how they can become energised again. It may take you awhile to work through the more technical aspects, even re-reading aspects that resonate with you. But it is worthwhile.
The first half of the book is dense, technical and hard to read. The final chapters were easier and had more flow. Despite the challenging start to the book I found it useful.
I've taken an interest in books on health and well-being lately and I figured this would be a good book to pick up. The book has quite a lot of information to take in so I took my time with this one. It has so many different sections on why someone can have low energy. I made notes on the ones that appeared important to me. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more of Libby Weaver's books in the future.
Read this as my mum wanted me to cause she thought I was a bit lacking in energy. It is a good read if you aren’t aware of diet, energy and metabolic kinetics, and in general how the body works. For me it was entry level. However if you are not someone who curiously explores multiple areas of study for your own knowledge expansion and interests. This is an excellent place to start
An informative read but a challenging one. Will need to read it again to possibly get full benefit of information. Meanwhile it’s. Even packed in a box as we are moving. So will try to read again at a later date.
This book had a lot of good information I wasn't previously aware of, like the link between alcohol consumption and break cancer. I'm taking away a star because there is so much information it's hard to know where to begin.
It was going so well, right up until the point when she suggested consulting an allergist or a dietitian (actual healthcare professionals) in the same breath as a naturopath (a proponent of magical thinking)
I have read this book multiple times as it is one that you can take off the shelf and read a chapter when you are looking for a bit of healthy inspiration. Lots of good practical advice with science to back up the theories.
What an incredible book. Libby explains how our body works so well that you don’t have to be a super brainy to understand. She doesn’t just explain things we should know well but also gives great ways to help improve the things that aren’t functioning well. I think this is a must read for everyone!
I don't agree with everything, but maybe I do - I just would add a bit ;). In any case I did learn a lot and I think Dr. Libby is a great expert to talk to when feeling exhausted. I thoroughly enjoyed the read.
If anyone is interested in energy, why they feel tired and find the normal answers around getting more sleep etc are not enough then this is the book for you. Dr Libby shows how not only sleep but hormones, digestion and many other biological processes impact on energy. Some of the topics are complex but are written in an accessible manner. If you are too tired (!) to read the whole book then don't miss the chapter on toxicity and the liver, and if you have tired teenagers catch those chapters too. If you have read some of her other books you may find yourself covering the same material, but otherwise highly recommended.
I really enjoyed this book, as well as the heap of research/scientific information available. I have jotted down many things to try out. Sometimes I did feel as if it were advertising her other books a little too much! I am keen to read Rushing Woman's Syndrome.
Complex bio-chemistry principles explained in a way that they can be easily understood. It made a lot of sense to me and I intend to follow the advice presented.
Nothing new for me here having read alot from Dr Libby. Found the teenage girls chapter really interesting though as it resonated with my own teenage years.
