It is time for the dragons to go home. To be free. It won’t be easy.

The final book in the series, and boy I will miss it. It was such a delightful series full of dragons, friendship, sisters who love glitter and sparkles, mystery, did I mention dragons in all colours and shapes, fun illustrations, sweet parents and grandparents, some gardening.

In this one the kids will have to let the dragons go. It is time for them to go home. It isn’t an easy decision but one that needs to be made. Before the dragons will wither. I wasn’t always happy with the decisions made in this book. I get that it is hard to let someone go, but sometimes that is what you need to do.

Next to dragons having to fly away, we also have Tomas’ grandpa who is sick and ends up in the hospital. For most of the book we don’t see/hear about him, but at times we will hear what is going on with him.

Sorry, but I disliked Tomas a lot in this one (though there was also moments I did like him, like how sweet he was with his tiny sister). He was a selfish wartbag for a chunk of the book. I am sorry, I get that you don’t want to let Flicker go. It is hard to let someone go who you love. But really, you see that your tiny dragon is longing to go outside, he is hurting, he is pretty much depressed, and you? You want to keep him. Sorry, but no. And then you also lie to your friends? Letting them lose their dragons and you keep yours? What the hell Tomas, get you brain together. :| Oh, and then I haven’t even talked about him lying AGAIN to his grandpa, who is in the HOSPITAL. >.<. Tomas Please. No. I was really really frustrated and this ruined my delight for this book. Instead of being excited, instead of being sad, I was just pissed. So so pissed.

His little sister was way smarter than he was on letting her dragon go. I can hear people say that she took just as long as Tomas, but I don’t blame her, she didn’t know the dragons had to leave. She didn’t know they were longing for home. She noticed things were off, and then decided on her own that Tinkle had to leave (even making her a tiny suitcase with some stuff in it).

I did feel sorry that Tomas didn’t think to talk to Liam, instead just opting to be just as sneaky. I get that Liam is a scary dude, but we have also seen other sides to this guy. Why not at least try to talk. Show the diary. Show the words Elvi wrote down. If he still doesn’t get it, then you can be sneaky.
I am glad with how the Liam situation was handled, I already had a suspicion it was that going on, it was getting more and more obvious with the way the story was going.

I loved that we got a more closer look to Grim/Jim. I loved that Tomas (despite being a selfish wart about other things) was opening his heart for Jim. Talking to him, having him help out with his grandpa’s garden, even helping him with his computer (and then he found out about Jim’s family).

Of course, even more fun was finding out more about the dragons, about Elvi, about the city that once was filled with dragons and people, how she started her own dragon-fruit tree, how she raised several dragons and set them free. It was so fun to read and I was devouring each new bit of information. Oh, and of course seeing what Flicker’s special ability is, and that each dragon has one of their own.

I had a laugh at that Lolli’s mom thought it was a good idea to invite 32 toddlers to a birthday party. Lady, that is a terrible idea. Believe me. :P

The ending, before the epilogue? I was definitely not crying, I just had things in my eyes. Then the epilogue came and more things turned up in my eyes. That was just the best ending ever. It just made me grin, smile, and yes, cry. How could I not? It was perfection.

All in all, despite wartbag Tomas who thankfully also had some good moments, this was a fantastic book again, and I enjoyed reading it oh oh so much. I would highly recommend this book and this series to everyone.

This is by far my favourite book of the series. It's delving deeper into the mystery of how the dragons came about, lots of adventures and trouble from our Liam and his dragon and a great character development for all of our protagonists and antagonists. Loved the message of friendship, being kinder to one another and loving your family. It was perfect.

Cannot wait to finish the series!

The next book in the series lives up to its previous books. What happens next?
For me the highlight is the development of the characters ( no spoilers here - I promise.)
We never know what is going on with another person, we all make assumptions and it's easy to stay stuck with the idea of who is "bad" and who is "good"
This book reminds me to look at the way I treat people, do I treat them fairly or do I let the past get in the way?

Tomas has made a promise to Grandad. But he really, really doesn't want to keep his promise. He has to tell his friends that it involves them too - they have to give up their dragons.

When Halloween turns out to be scarier than it should've been, they realise that maybe giving up the dragons might be the best thing. But where should they take them? Has keeping them mucked up the natural order of things?

Tomas goes back to a map he'd found in Grandad's shed. A magical looking map, tucked in an old book left there by the previous shed owner. Could this be the dragon's real home? More investigations in the shed reveal the old owner knew all about the dragons and where they came from. Her diaries fascinate the four friends as they pore over them. Someone else is keen to learn more too. None other than Tomas' worst enemy - Liam.

Liam has something more special than all of the dragons put together, but doesn't know it. He also doesn't know the havoc and destruction that is possible, and when Tomas uncovers this in notes and journals hidden in Grandad's shed, he knows he has to warn Liam.

A fantastic, thrilling ending to this fun series! Tomas not only has a secret from Grandad, he has also lied to his friends. He feels truly awful but when he discovers new information about the dragons he's worried that he's made a terrible mistake!

This series has been fast paced, funny. It made me smile, fear for the characters and wish I had a (little) dragon of my own. Author - Andy Shepherd

The superhero squad is back! Tomas has promised his granddad that he and his friends will release their dragons at the end of the summer holidays. The only problem is Tomas forgot to tell his friends about the promise. When they find out, they're not very excited, but as the holidays progress, they discover that their dragons are getting harder to take care of as they get older. They all realize that it really is best for the dragons to move on, but they are not sure where it is they will move onto. Join the superhero squad as they learn more about Elvi and the mysteries of the origins of dragons and where they all go. And, of course, they have to keep an eye on Liam and make sure he's not up to his old shenanigans with his dragon!

The pacing in this third book was a little slower than the previous two entries and it seemed a little heavier on exposition over action. That being said, the author did a good job tying up ongoing story threads, and Tomas really shows some personal growth and a better understanding of others. Fans of the series will still enjoy this book.

This series is most appropriate for students in grades 3-5.

I'm not ashamed to admit that I finished this book crying my eyes out, but smiling through the tears. What a fitting end to the trilogy! Tomas's grandfather had me worried in this one! I loved Tomas' character development and how he reconsiders what he thought he knew about 'Grim' and Liam. Elvi and Arturo sounded like the kind of people I would love to know and their adventures seemed so exciting as they plunged into the depths of the rainforest in search of the city of dragons. This book really makes you believe in looking for magic in the strangest of places and, ultimately, in the power of kindness.
I will be recommending this entire series to my pupils and stocking up for our school library!

In this final book in the trilogy, the gang must say goodbye to their beloved fire or ice breathing friends and as Tomas's granddad takes ill again, he discovers Grim the moody gardener isn't so bad after all and just what has Liam discovered and tried to keep hidden?

The most surprising of the trilogy so far I can't believe it's the end of the stories which I have enjoyed so much! If only dragons existed though I don't think I could've said goodbye to them myself in real life! It was good to see Tomas honour his granddadds wishes and to discover why Liam has been the way he has for the trilogy too it wrapped up the series nicely.

Dragons. Gleaming, gliding, glistening and ferocious. And in this case - cute. The third installment to Andy Shepherd's dragon series did not disappoint. We learn more about where the dragons come from and how they grow and how Thomas and the Superhero Squad look after their dragons now they are getting bigger and more noticeable to even the most preoccupied grown-up. If you love dragons you'll love this series, no matter how old you are. Now if only dragonfruit trees weren't so difficult to grow...

The next book in the series that I've read with 7 year old, but honestly I would read it by myself! I think I was more invested that him at some points, wondering what was going to happen next.

It's a truly wonderful dragon tale which touches upon real life scenarios that children of the characters' age go through - poorly relatives and friendship fallouts for example - with dragons being an escape from reality.

Shepherd really brings the magic to life, and I think this is actually my favourite in the series so far - I can't wait to read the next one!

This book has made me laugh out loud and shed a tear or too. The final book in the trilogy sees the superhero squad having to say goodbye to their dragons but there are lots of mishaps and hilarity on the journey.
Lots more fabulous dragons appear throughout the story and we see the good side of both Liam and Grim. I can’t wait to share it with my class at school.

An amazing book on responsibility and love. Secrets, friendships and painful episodes ahead. A wonderful book that has you occasionally facepalming but at the same time a spellbinding tale. I hope the next book continues the strengths.

I was originally not going to rate these on my Goodreads account, but then I thought, I’d be doing the author an injustice. This is my third such review, of which all are similar!

We listened to the audiobook of this novel on a long car trip after smashing the first two. We all found ourselves taken with the whimsical story and enjoyed the different dragons and their personalities. My son, who normally asks me to tell him stories was more than satisfied with these and between stops (or his younger brother crying) he asked for it to be put on. If your kid loves dragons and often imagines himself with one or plays with dragon toys, this book is for them (and you).

I volunteer to hear readers at my local school and one was reading this. They seemed to be enjoying it so thought I would have a look at it.
A totally enjoyable read about a group of friends who hatch dragons from dragon fruit. Typically for me, it was the last book in a set of three, so it dealt with the children having to let the dragons go. The dragons were becoming too big to be hidden and possibly too dangerous as well.
The book deals with friendship and how friends feel when they are let down. It also deals with misjudging people too.

All in all an enjoyable and charming read.

Thomas and his friends face more dragon chaos and uncover more of the secret mystery of the history of the dragonfruit tree, but also realise that Granddad is correct and the dragons need to be let go - now they just have to convince Thomas' arch enemy to do the same!
These are fun junior / young YA stories with great illustrations and lots of humour. Perfect for independent readers or bedtime stories.
