Perfect teen - YA fantasy (Hint to grandparents!)

I'm W-A-A-Y out of the reader demographics on this one (I'm sixty-ish and female), but trust me. I'm reviewing an ARC of The Dragon Sea Chronicles - the complete trilogy in one box set. When my 4 boys were much younger, I read to them at mealtimes. We covered everything from Dr. Suess to J R R Tolkien, and they loved it. This trilogy would have been a great addition. Boys/young men from 13 - 20+ will just eat this stuff up! I mean, dragons? Sea Monsters? Magic powers and evil mages? piracy on the high seas? It's got all of that, hints of (G rated) romance, the whole coming-of-age bit, and lots of action - in short, this is a just-about-perfectly pitched YA fantasy. Author Brian Ference clearly knows his audience, and leaves no trick unturned in the effort to engage his readers. It's a total success, and if you have young men in your life, this is a great holiday gift.

In this exciting box set of wizards, sea serpents, pirates, and dragons, we follow the adventures of Darek of the Red Claw Clan. This young sailor meets head on with ruthless pirates and warring clans, his hidden powers growing, first in his natural ability to commune with sea dragons, then his uncanny dragon-riding skill and sudden bursts of psi power. Below is a review of one of the books in this series to show you the bravery and exciting adventure you will find in each book of this set! Enjoy!

*** Reviewing DRAGON MAGE UPRISING : BOOK TWO ***
In this high seas adventure, action-packed and exciting, the story line compels the reader to stay involved in the story. From the very beginning, the reader can feel that something is going to go wrong as Captain Serle prepares to attack and board the trading vessel. The Captain is suspicious and warns off his daughter, Livis, from her direct involvement. She had been studying the pirate trade under his skilled leadership and had been looking forward to going on the raid. To be forced to remain on the sidelines was very upsetting to her, yet she prepared the crew remaining behind as if they were indeed going to be drawn into battle with the Black Claw cargo ship.

Instead of surrendering at the first cannonball fired cross their bow, the clipper turned and fired back at Captain Serle’s flagship. When the sea dragons swam to attack the clipper ship, a brown-scaled dragon flew from that ship into the air and breathed fire! The pirate ship’s sails were ablaze! If Livis did not help them, no one would survive! At ramming speed, her ship raced toward the clipper. The other sea dragon who had survived the initial attack was able to claw its way aboard the clipper and tear through the Black Claw gunners. Livis’ crew boarded the clipper and fought valiantly, the men giving their best to protect her from harm. But when the Black Claw crew surrendered, her father was angry that she had disobeyed him. He stripped her rank and put her back on deckhand duty indefinitely! But she smiled to herself, knowing that in the morning, her father would find her gone, along with her crew and her ship.

This was really a good story with so much action happening. It really is a non-stop adventure to thrill the reader! The characters are developed well and it’s easy to see the bravery each exhibits. Grab your copy and set sail with the Captain to meet your destiny!

This is an amazing coming of age story with dragons, mages, pirates, and love interests. It has action, suspense, cliff hangers, and love found, love lost, and then love found again. Very entertaining series that will keep you interested.

DRAGONCLAW DARE: A young man, Darek, finds out the hard way that it is never a smart move to take a dare. He turns a drunken night of innocent revelry into a momentous fight for his life, all because he wanted to show off. When Darek sails in a stolen sloop to the home waters of the Black Claw Clan, he runs into trouble by rescuing a prisoner from the clutches of a wizard who is trying to control/train a sea serpent. Escaping from the wizard soon forces the young men into the hands of a band of pirates. The daughter of the Pirate captain takes a liking to Darek, and things soon grow progressively worse.

DRAGON SEA: MAGE REBORN How can a young mage save his mentor, country, friends, and dragons from an evil mage who controls the deadly sea-serpents? Amel was judged to have ridden another man's dragon, and for calling forth sea-serpents to destroy the sailing vessel where he was enslaved. Cyrus, the apprentice mage to Agrippa, has declared that Amel must pass the Rebirth Ritual in the bowels of a volcano. Amel's trial brought him into contact with a dragon egg which soon hatched and a bond was born. The two needed to join with others to stop the evil growing in the seas brought forth by Cyrus. The fight for the freedom of Dragonclaw Islands was approaching.

SEA DRAGONS: MAGE RISING With dragons, pirates, an evil Mage, his sea serpents, and two love interests, how can you go wrong diving into this story. MAGE REBORN set the stage for the battle of the Dragon Sea. Our hero, Darek, is now a young dragon mage himself. He is trying to help his father build a school for dragons and their riders. When the evil Cyrus re-emerges, the Islands of the Red and Black Claw clans are in danger. Cyrus is now more powerful than ever, and he is determined to rule the entirety, by any means possible. Can goodness overcome Cyrus' evil magic, or will Darek meet an untimely death? By chance, an old ally returns to help Darek in his fight, and becomes so much more than that.

A well written story of a young man forced to sacrifice everything for what he believes in.

The authors Brian Ference and Chris Turner, have created a world you can see in your mind.  A world filled with magical creatures, mages, rival clans (Red Claw & Black Claw) and pirates, a little romance sea dragons and sea serpents, good and bad.

It starts out as a simple boys being boys story and goes from there. A brag and a dare has Derek sailing through treacherous waters and through a rival clan's territory.  One thing leads to another and Derek is captured by pirates. With the help of the Pirate leader's daughter, Derek manages to escape just before executed, just to be captured by the Black Claws clan.

The story continues with Derek still a slave jumping on a flying sea dragon and fighting a large sea dragon attacking their ship. Eventually, with help again from the pirate leaders daughter Dereck again escapes his fate and finally makes it back to his clan.

Darek finds out he has an affinity for dragons and is accepted by the Dragon Mage as his apprentice and eventually a Dragon Mage himself.

Through all these years Darek and his clan have been plagued by Cyrus, the previous  apprentice to the Dragon Mage.  Cyrus had forsaken the teachings of the Mage and turned to forbidden blood magic.  Once thought defeated, Cyrus has returned and is more powerful than ever, and he is determined to rule everyone and everything, by any means possible.  Has Darek learned enough to defeat him, or will he too succumb to the call of the power of Blood Magic to defeat Cyrus?

This book is filled with non-stop action,  and so many twists and turns, you may get dizzy! I absolutely enjoyed the story, and recommend it with 5 stars to anyone who likes a good fantasy story with plenty of action and adventure.

This set of books contains good, clean writing. A synopsis compared the stories to The Dragons of Pern. Not a good comparison. I own most of the Pern books and have read them many times. The Dragon sea chronicles contain more sailing terms and ship descriptions than I ever wished to know. It made the reading confusing. Good verses evil is the major premise, as well as, the villains thirst for absolute power. The ending hints at more books to come. This left me frustrated. Will not read any other books by this author. If you love all things naval, good reading.

This was my first exposure to Brian Ference and Chris Turner. From the very beginning, the reader can feel that something is going to go wrong. The world they have created with magical creatures, mages, rival clans (Red Claw & Black Claw) and pirates, a little romance sea dragons and sea serpents, comes vividly alive through the way the story was written. i will definitely continue reading their books and advise others to read this series.

This box set brings my total of Brian S Ference's works that I have read and enjoyed to 6 - this is a departure from the previous stories that he has written, but just like in the Dorian Gray and Lupari tales, he has woven an interesting story. The young hero is believable and grows further in his powers as each book progresses. The world is well fleshed out and I personally cannot wait for the next tale. Heartily recommend this box set and if you have KU your in luck as it is available now!!

SOMETHING SIMPLE CAN DICTATE YOUR FUTURE

Three amazing stories about dragons and the people who have come to know and control them. Riveting and mesmerizing. Travel through the books with Darek and find out how life can be changed by something as simple as a dare. Couldn’t put it down until I was done.

Dragons, Serpents, and Mages, Oh My!

This is a action packed story full of dragons, magic, pirates, and mayhem. There is good and evil and all things in between. A few editing errors but the story was entertaining and interesting. My only complaint is a sudden and open epilogue ending.

An exhilarating read

Magic, dragons, adventure...and all the twists and turns that go with it. Yet this book was not like most Dragon stories. I very much enjoyed it and hope to read more about these characters.

Plenty of Dragons

The story gets complicated with the number of characters, the many settings, and the changes of action. I think a simpler plot with more descriptions of the characters would work better.

Poor

Not good, if authors use nautical terms, they should ensure that they are used correctly, and should ensure the spelling grammar are correct.this could have been a good book
