Deadly Blood, A Stan Turner Mystery

Rate this book
Dallas attorney Stan Turner hates criminal law but has a propensity for attracting murder cases anyway. So, it's no big surprise when a simple attorney-ad-litem appointment in family court evolves into a complex murder defense.

Melody Monroe, a delightful teenager with ambitions to be a gymnast, loses her parents in a tragic auto accident. She is devastated and falls into a deep depression. Without any relatives to take her in, she ends up with Child Protective Services. Due to what CPS considers to be her bad attitude, they have difficulty placing her with a permanent foster family until Frank and Marjorie Monroe come along. They are a middle-aged couple who want a child but don’t want the hassle of raising one who is very young, so Melody is a perfect fit.

Unfortunately, Melody soon finds out Frank is an alcoholic and often beats Marjorie up. And, it also becomes apparent that her new parents each have their own agendas, so she often finds herself caught in the middle of their bickering. Frank, too, has an un-fatherly interest in Melody which is rather unsettling.

Before long, Melody learns that Frank and his sister Natalie are beneficiaries of the Monroe Trust which owns a ranch worth millions of dollars. The two hate each other, and as the date draws near for the final release of the trust restriction on selling the ranch, Frank is found dead behind the wheel of his Ford Ranger. When Melody is charged with his murder she begs Stan to defend her.

Looking for a terrific legal thriller? This is one you should read! Although 12th in a series, this one reads easily as a stand alone.

Attorney Stan Turner isn't a criminal lawyer, but it seems these kinds of cases follow him around. When asked by a colleague to step in and represent a teenager while her adopted parents' divorce is being settled, he has no idea just how complicated this case is going to be... when first, her father is a murder covering a suicide, and then her aunt, killed in almost the same way as her father. And then there's all that money .....

Turner is a great character. He's personable, he's smart, and he's willing to go the limit in representing his clients. He's a family man, with a wife and 4 young children. it's always a balance of time .. and with a murder trial, very little time is spent at home.

The characters are finely drawn and very credible. It's certainly easy to see that author is an attorney with a lot of years of experience. The author takes the reader step by step from the start of an investigation to the choosing of jurors to the actual trial by two sides who each believe they are right. Surprises and twists and turns .... keeps the reader riveted to the pages.

Many thanks to the author for the digital copy of this legal thriller. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

Rounded up from around 3.5 stars ⭐️

I haven’t read a legal thriller for a long time. I really enjoy them, I just never seem to come across them very often. So I was really glad to get my hands on this book!

Deadly Blood follows Stan Turner, an attorney who ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time and falls head first into a murder trial.

My favourite thing about this book was William Manchee’s writing style. It was captivating and helped move the story along quickly. I found myself devouring the first part of the book. I will definitely be picking up more of his works because of this. I haven’t read any of the previous novels in this series but was able to follow it perfectly, so it definitely works as a stand alone.

However, I was slightly disappointed by the ending. It didn’t have the big ‘wow’ moment I was hoping for. Additionally, in the first half I found myself routing for the defendant, but by the second half this was gone, which may be why the ending wasn’t quite there for me.

That being said, this is a enjoyable novel, it’s fast paced and written well. I really liked Stan Turner and look forward to seeing what other scrapes he gets in to. I would recommend this to anyone that loves a good legal thriller! I want to thank Voracious Readers Only, the publishers and author for giving me a chance to read this book and give my personal opinion!

GNAB Deadly Blood is an entertaining historical legal novel featuring lawyer Stan Turner and the domino's begin falling in the autumn and winter of 1982. Stan is a fairly inexperienced lawyer, and in Deadly Blood is handling his second murder case, mostly against his will. Taking place in the Texas tangle of bedroom communities serving Dallas, Plano, and Collin County, Stan spends a lot of time driving and is mostly late for dinner with his wife Rebekah and their four lovely young children.

Melody Monroe's mother Margary is seeking a TRO - temporary restraining order - against her abusive husband Frank as she files for divorce, and the judge insists that their adopted 16 year old daughter must have her own attorney-ad-litem before Melody's testimony regarding the restraining order can be heard. Stan accepts that chore as a favor to his friend Martin Johnson despite the fact that he has decided to never again do 'family law' after that first murder trial.

When Melody is charged with the murder of her father Frank who died the same day, Stan is guilted into taking her case against his better judgement. It is a decision he will regret many times over the next few months as the Monroe family is whittled down one by one.

William Manchee writes a tight, entertaining tale with characters varying in appeal and mostly sympathetic. I very much enjoyed this novel.

I received a free electronic copy of this novel on December 22, 2018 from Netgalley, William Manchee, and Top Publications LTD in exchange for an honest review. Thank you all for sharing your hard work with me.

Knowing that this is the 12th book in a series, i took a chance as to whether Deadly Blood would work well as a standalone or not. I had no problem with getting into the story, which proved to be quite a page turner. Well written, with plenty of twists. I am hoping to read more books by this author. Recommended.

My thanks to Netgalley and the Publishers for my copy.

Deadly Blood is a prime example of why one must exercise extreme caution when reading books that are self-published. I've read some very good ones - getting published is hard. But the majority seem to be hobby writers who aren't terribly skilled at the craft of writing. Presumably they do it because they enjoy it. I acquired this book free through Voracious readers (I am a voracious reader) and it was billed as a legal thriller. I like legal thrillers. There's lots of legal here, but zero thriller.
Our protagonist, Stan Turner, is a so-so lawyer with a jealous wife and four children, who is cajoled at the last minute into representing 16-year-old Melody Monroe. Her adoptive mother Marjorie is in court applying for a protection order against her adoptive father Frank. Melody presents in court with a shocking bruise on her face and testifies that Frank regularly sexually assaults her and frequently beats her mother. A few days later, Frank turns up dead, an apparent suicide. But no, turns out he was murdered and Melody is charged. The case makes no mention of the sexual abuse, but instead focuses on a $4M trust Frank could have cashed in on in 2 years, which Melody will inherit.
It's all downhill from there. If you ever wondered just how tedious the realities of the legal system are, how dull the backstories of legal connections are, how boring real conversations are - here is a primer. William Manchee can never cut to the chase, he has to drag us through all the tedium, all the 'hi, how are yous', details of every meal served, and courtroom process. And manages to do this without building his characters.
Melody who is 16 shrugs, has a cute smile, and says "I'm screwed." She has a horrific backstory, but it hasn't affected her. She loves Frank. (Was he a groomer, a paedophile? Who knows?) Marjorie is a perfect mom, but her backstory would indicate otherwise. I could go on, but there is no point, none of the characters are realistic or believable.
I had to scroll through pages and pages of pointless description - I now know more about Texas weather than I ever wanted to, more about why a judge who served on one case might not serve on the next, and been repeatedly told that Texas ranches often have horses on them that people ride - and all this without ever putting me in the middle of wild Texas storm, the challenge of getting a bad judge, or seeing an actual horse. So much banal description.
Oh, and worst of all - the actual killer and the motivation are revealed at the very end - not by logic and deduction, clues we might have picked up on along the way - but a 'twist' tacked on at the end, just to wrap things up.
This book was a deadly waste of time.

William Manchee’s Deadly Blood is a gripping legal thriller that takes readers on a suspenseful journey through the morally murky waters of family drama, betrayal, and the pursuit of justice. Set against the vibrant backdrop of Dallas, this latest installment in the Stan Turner Mystery series delivers a tightly woven narrative that keeps readers guessing until the very end.

Stan Turner, the reluctant criminal defense attorney, is once again thrust into a murder case he’d rather avoid. His initial role as an attorney-ad-litem in a family court case quickly spirals into a complex defense when Melody Monroe, a teenage girl already burdened by tragedy, is accused of killing her adoptive father. Manchee’s portrayal of Stan is both authentic and relatable — a man driven not only by legal duty but also by his innate desire to protect those who can’t protect themselves.

Melody’s character is at the emotional core of the story. After losing her biological parents in a devastating accident, she is thrust into a volatile foster home. Her adoptive father, Frank Monroe, is a violent alcoholic with a dark past, while her adoptive mother, Marjorie, is torn between loyalty and fear. Manchee expertly explores the psychological toll this abusive environment takes on Melody, making her both a sympathetic figure and a believable murder suspect.

The legal aspects of the novel are meticulously crafted, reflecting Manchee’s own background as an attorney. Readers are treated to the intricacies of the courtroom, where Stan must navigate through unreliable witnesses, conflicting testimonies, and the looming influence of a multi-million-dollar inheritance. The Monroe Trust, which lies at the heart of the murder investigation, adds an extra layer of intrigue as family secrets and long-standing grudges come to light.

What makes Deadly Blood particularly compelling is its exploration of morality and justice. Manchee poses difficult questions about guilt, innocence, and the lengths people will go to protect their interests. The tension steadily builds, with each twist and revelation pulling readers deeper into the mystery.

Fans of legal dramas by authors like John Grisham or Scott Turow will find Deadly Blood a satisfying read. With its well-rounded characters, authentic courtroom drama, and suspenseful plot, Manchee delivers a masterful thriller that will keep readers eagerly turning the pages.

So, first of all I had no idea this was the 12th book of the series while I requested this off NetGalley. But at no point did I feel this was part of a series and that I missed anything by not reading the first 11 books. So, kudos to the author for not making the reader feel left out.

That being said, I've got to be honest, the actual mystery was not that exciting. I mean the author tried very hard to base this like Earl Stanley Gardner and the Perry Mason series but Perry Mason as a character comes across as such a strong person, a lawyer who is hell bent on making sure the truth of the matter is found out. And with his private detective Paul Drake and secretary Della Street, Mason goes about solving the most unsolvable crimes.

That's the thrill there. Mason's client is almost always caught in an ironclad case. There's no chance that the police will incarcerate someone else. But with clever detective skills and amazing courtroom writing, Perry Mason books are amazing for everyone to read.

This one, well the actual mystery itself was quite boring. There was little to none detective skills involved even though there is a private I in the book. It just felt like Stan Turner was so jaded about taking murder mysteries and so scared of his wife, that he seemed like, excuse me for my language, a wimp. You can't shake off the feeling that he doesn't want to do this. And that he's being forced to, but he is doing this only because he's getting good money. I know that's why lawyers do take up cases. But it felt like that was the sole motivation for doing it.

It's ridiculous how things seem to add up in the end for the case and Melody. I just think it's a big disappointment when the author tried so hard to copy a formula that has worked so well.

I'd definitely pick a Perry Mason novel. Might not pick another Stan Turner novel though. The character is just not strong enough for me.

I received this book through the author and voracious readers for an honest review.
I didn't know that the book was 12th in a series until I read the reviews after I finished it. No problem, certainly felt like a stand alone book to me. Overall, I liked the premise and the two stories/court cases in one. I generally enjoyed the narrator style but found there were too many descriptors of Stan or others "screaming, spitting, sighing deeply and pleading" all of which I had a hard time visualizing.
I appreciated the medico-legal research but did get caught up when the details weren't accurate (correct-blood thinners may contribute to stroke, incorrect - they do not cause seizures). The fact that the doctor prescribed warfarin to the dead father without asking about alcohol intake was a bit of a stretch in this day and age of medical liability.
I liked the legal, professional approach stylistically, but found the repeated comments on womens' looks troubling. I didn't see how it was necessary to describe female characters as attractive or to explain how Stan is a "sucker for a pretty girl with a pretty smile". I couldn't see how that was relevant to the role of his administrative assistant Jodie, the reporter or Paula Waters the ADA and I felt these comments cheapened the story. Equal opportunity, I guess, as the male tennis pro was handsome with "plenty of ladies wanting to take lessons". . .
I did like the court cases, the drama and the interesting plot twists and see my self reading other books in the series. My comments reflect what I see as stylist challenges that although they were annoying did not hamper the enjoyable read!

Exciting read!!
I was lucky enough to receive a copy of Deadly Blood for free via Voracious Readers Only.
Straight away I was engrossed.
I loved the clean and simple writing style throughout the book. This made it a book that I was able to complete in a few days.
The trail that is ongoing throughout the story, kept me hooked. Plenty of detail, so you know exactly what is happening, without any unnecessary excess information.
I liked the way that you are always clear of who is who in this book. Some books have many different characters, introduced in quick succession, which can get confusing. This was not the case for this story so I knew what was happening, with who and when all the time.
Despite the story being easy to follow, I could not work our who the guilty party was going to be.
There are plenty of twists and surprises to keep you interested!
Stan is a loveable character and I loved the journey with him throughout.
Apparently, Deadly Blood is part of a series, but I was unaware of this when I started the book. It reads well as a stand-alone.
I would definitely be interested in reading more of William Manchee’s books in the future!

I stumbled across Wm Manchee on the Voracious Readers website and the description of the book ticked most of my boxes. I received a free copy for an honest review so many thanks!

For this to be the 12th book in the series, I was a little leery of whether it would be a great read as most series that go that high up, I have found that the content does not measure up. Boy, was I mistaken!

Stan Turner is an attorney in Collin County, TX and gets roped into his second murder trial by accidentally helping out a peer on another case. Melody, his client is accused of killing her adopted father in order to inherit his $2million dollar share in a family property. There are plenty of twists and turns in this fast paced thriller.

The main character, Stan, is very well developed and a likable character. I liked him and found myself rooting for him throughout the pitfalls of the story. His client, Melody, could have used a bit more depth, but its nothing that distracts from the story.

Loved this mystery, crime, procedural, legal thriller! Will be reading more in the series!

Does Melody want to cash in? Is she just a girl with a pretty face?

In this book, Legal Eagle Stan Turner is in a position where he takes on what appears to be a straightforward criminal case as a favour to a colleague, totally against his better judgement.
Deadly Blood follows the legal proceedings of a teenage girl being charged with murder. As Stan investigates, he leaves no stone unturned. First there’s one body – is it murder or suicide? Then the second death, did Melody have a hand in it? Are these deaths linked? Is the greed for money so strong or is there another motive?

Whilst there were many characters in this story, it was very easy to follow who was who and how they related to each other.

I would recommend this book to people who enjoy a good who dunnit that is easy to follow and an interesting read! I read it over five days. I was hooked.

Many thanks to the author for the complimentary copy of this book via Voracious Readers Only. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

A simple attorney-ad-litem case to represent 16 year old Melody quickly turns into a murder charge. Attorney Stan Turner doesn’t like practicing criminal law but develops a soft spot for the teenager with a tragic past. But all is not what it seems and with millions of dollars to inherit, has Stan been taken in by a pretty smile?
This was my first Stan Turner novel, however I doubt it will be my last. It was great as a stand-alone and I didn’t feel like I had missed anything by not reading any of the previous books in the series. I enjoyed the writing style and pace as I followed Stan seek the truth. The plot was well thought out with some great twists. Stan is a very likeable character that has a lot of empathy and I quickly found myself drawn into this family man’s life as he fought for his client. I received a free copy of this book from Voracious Readers in exchange for an honest review.

This is another great legal thriller from one of the best. It took me a little bit to get into the story. But once I did, I couldn’t put it down. This time, Stan Turner gets snagged into doing a favor for a friend by representing a 17 year-old girl in a domestic dispute between her adopted parents. He ends up representing her in two different murder trials. A lot of the action takes place in the court rooms. So, the all of the dialog helps make the book read fast. William Manchee writes the books out of chronological order. So, the author mentions events in the main characters past that he may or may not have written about yet. This was a complete story with a very surprising and satisfying ending. I look forward to reading more about Stan Turner.

I like Stan Turner, the narrator of his story where he is accidentally involved in a case involving murder, conspiracy, and a dysfunctional family. Plot twists, surprise evidence, and courtroom drama add to the suspense in this well written first person account. Stan is a sensitive, smart attorney who believes in hard work and justice. He is also a loving, faithful husband and father who values his wife and children. These qualities make Stan the best person to defend young Melody in both murder cases. His strong character makes this story successful. I look forward to reading more titles by William Manchee. Thanks to the author for the complimentary copy of this title through Voracious Readers Only.

I received a free copy of William Manchee's book Deadly Blood through Voracious Readers and was not sure what to expect as it appears to be the 12th book in the series. Happily though, the book is a stand alone and I really enjoyed reading it. Stan Turner is a lawyer who does not like defending criminal cases but seems to find himself enmeshed in these cases. Stan tries his best for a young girl accused of a heinous crime and William Manshee takes the reader through the complexities of the legal system. The legal proceedings are well written and the characters are interesting and genuinely real. I really enjoyed reading this book and would like to thank Voracious Readers, William Manchee and the publisher for the free copy of the book.

This story is about Melody who is accused of murdering her adoptive father. Melody's biological parents were killed in a auto accident when she was young. She was the lone survivor. After being shuffled from one foster home to another, Melody is adopted by Frank and Marjorie Malone. They adopt her for their own selfish reasons. Stan Turner is the attorney representing her at trial.

You will learn that attorney's play politics, twist evidence, and that juries do not always get the verdict right. Great book!

I received this book from Goodreads for a honest opinion.

My thanks to Voracious Readers Only, and the publishers and author, for the opportunity to read this novel. It is a gripping legal drama that kept me reading long into the night. I found it most interesting that it was set in the early 1980’s with consistent attention to detail. And I love the fact that it is the start of a series so that I can read more. I’ll definitely be investing and think I may have unexpectedly found a new to me author to follow.

*I received this book through Voracious Readers Only in exchanged for an honest review.*

I enjoyed the pace of the book. It had a good mixture of suspense and lightheartedness. The book had just enough plot twists to keep the reader reading. Even though this book is part of a series, it could be a stand alone book. I haven’t read the other books in the series and had no trouble reading this one. I am now interested in reading more of Manchee’s books. I would recommend reading this book.

A generally good legal thriller with many twists and turns. But the plot is clever, the characters mostly believable. The writing could be tightened as there is a fair amount of description of drive times, calling of witnesses. But there is sufficient suspense to hold one’s interest. I would consider reading more from this author.

Full disclosure. This book was received as a complimentary review copy

I received this book for free and am leaving this review voluntarily.

The book starts innocently but quickly escalates. This thriller book is strong, thanks to its focus on a single case, which adds realism to the trial scenes. However, while I felt the ending didn’t fully meet my expectations, I still rate it 5 out of 5 stars. If you enjoy legal thrillers and can handle the tough themes, this book could be your next favorite.

Stan Turner the attorney who manages to become a a defense lawyer in a murder trial despite never trying to. The latest in a series but was able to jump right in without feeling lost.
Written from the defense lawyer’s eyes I felt the cringe worthy moments when Stan Turner did.
Mr Manchee brings you into the courtroom & beyond. Well worth the read.

I really loved this novel! It had a few typos which distracted me a bit, but the plot had so many twists and turns that it kept me glued! It was interesting to read a novel written from the point of view of the lawyer in a case instead of a plaintiff/defendant. I plan to look for more Stan Turner Mysteries!!!

It was a good story but the huge number of editing errors annoyed me. I noted at least 10 errors, including several of attributing statements to the wrong person (for example, an objection being made by the witness not the prosecutor, and a question being asked by the prosecutor not the judge, etc.) Unfortunately, this spoiled my enjoyment of the book.
