Dark Horse is thrilled to bring to readers of all ages Nickelodeon's The Last Airbender. This Free Comic Book Day story is an excellent excellent entry point to this wonderfully charming and imaginative world! When an earnest young man starts vying for her attention, Mai wonders if he is her ticket out of the dumps after her break up with Fire Lord Zuko. Little does she know, this fellow has a secret that will point her to a destination she least expects—danger!
Comic book writer whose credits include the Eisner Award nominated Alison Dare, the YALSA listed Days Like This and Lola: A Ghost Story, as well as Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight, Love as a Foreign Language and Teen Titans Go, which garnered him a Shuster Award.
This was great! Short. Sweet. It shows how Zhao uses Aang's hope against him, capturing him, in a missing moment in Season 1 of the series. Of course, Aang uses Air Normad relics to his advantage and Zhao ends up failing once again. Poor Aang. His hope crushed once again.
Any Avatar fan knows knows what to expect from an encounter between Zhao and Aang: it usually includes a trap or a trick and Zhao's embarrassing undoing. This is no different. Although in its briefness it lacks Sokka's jokes and the sweet interaction between the team. I think it was too short to get the reader involved in the narration or build up an original storyline.
Cute little addition. I didn’t expect much since this was part of a free comic book month. It’s two small stories no longer than 5 pages each but very enjoyable. The first story is heart wrenching while the second is fun and focused on the groups little jokes. If you love ATLA it’s worth it. Plus, it’s free on Dark Horse’s website/app so there is nothing to loose.
Pretty good overall. There are two different stories and I liked the second one more mainly because it featured Toph. The first one was also good. Seeing Zhao after all this time was a nice flashback to the events of the first season. As an ATLA fan, it is good to have this in my collection. It is free on Amazon so get it if you like the anime/cartoon. However, there are better Avatar comics out there for sure.
FCBD 2011 has 2 stories. The art on both is fantastic and both stories are good.
Relics - Johane Matte - 5*
"One doesn't catch pheasent-squirrels by staying on a boat. You hunt them where they LIVE." Zhao said "Take as much of the junk (airbender relics) as you can carry. I don't need any of it anymore. They served their purpose -- to lead a curious Avatar right where I wanted."
A touching tale - Aang finds an air bender relic and goes in search of the owners, only to find out it's a Fire Nation trap. The last few panels made me tear up.
Dirty Is Only Skin Deep - J. Torres - 4*
"My clothes are not dirty! This is a protective layer of earth! It's an earthbending thing. I don't expect you to understand ... "
Bender hijinks ensue when Katara and the team try to persuade Toph to take a bath.
I read this book very quickly while waiting for the bus and I had so much fun! In this comic, Aang needs to fight the fire nation while he’s searching for airbenders. It’s another ‘side quest’ on the tv series, but since the comic is so short, this is very nice. No other background information other than the show is needed, which makes it very approachable and easy to follow. The main characters are present and the idea of the fire nation attacking is present, that’s all you need to know to be able to follow the story. What I liked as well is that the drawings are in the exact same style as the show and the style of speaking as well, so it really read as if I was watching TV. The only thing I felt could’ve been more elaborate is the story itself. I understand that this comic was free for national comic book day and that it’s not supposed to be very long, but I felt as if some parts were rushed over and emphasis on important aspects was lacking. I could still easily follow and understand the story, but I felt that I could’ve enjoyed it more if the story was about 10-15 pages longer.
I added this to my Kindle on Stuff your kindle day and I would absolutely recommend! (But only if you’ve already seen the tv show!)
This is a great book, but a little short. And the drawings in the second story are a little interesting. The first story, feels like the TV Series, which I love. But the second sorry just feels off somehow.
I don’t know. Overall it’s an amazing comic book, and definitely is worth 4 1/2 stars. Hope this helps😉
This comic dragged up memories of why I loved Avatar: the Last Airbender when I was younger - and now has me contemplating a rewatch. It features one serious and one light-hearted story, providing a comfortable and familiar balance between drama and fun. Entertaining if also a bit quick, I'd say this one is worth reading.
These two comics are quick reads that compliment the avatar the last air bender series well. Always a nice read to get a better feel of some of your favorite characters
I am a complete noob when it comes to Avatar, but I enjoyed the artwork and the story. I look forward to diving into this word again to see what happens next!
