After years of searching shifter communities for his fated mate, Slate is at his wit's end. Once the new park ranger walks into his office, Slate's bear scoffs at all his preconceived notions. Worried about another human finding out their family's secret brings about another revelation.
Follow the Major family, a group of black bear shifters living in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Dealing with the death of their father and hiding their shifting abilities from the small town they're from is nothing compared to the moment they meet their mates and claim them as theirs.
These are safe, interconnected novellas, guaranteed HEA, with plenty of twists and turns to keep you glued to your Kindle.
After reading book 1 in this series, I was really looking forward to this book. It had the makings of a great read to me - older man/younger woman, broody alpha hero, family oriented group and they were both alleged virgins. I mean seriously, what's not to love in all of that. When in all actuality, I was let down in the prologue and it left a stale taste in my mouth the whole story. To ME, it was unnecessary to have him wanting to let a woman touch him in order to let him take her to a dance, to have a naked shifter slink into his bed and obviously she at least seen his erection, if not touched him, and also him thinking about the women he kissed in the past (while he was kissing the heroine for the first time at nearly 50% of the book, by the way). Seems like a lot for us to get past for the hero being a virgin. From this story, maybe he had never physically had sex but I can guarantee a guy didn't get around like that without having done other stuff so NO I did not buy it.
-no violence of a sexual nature -no cheating -no ow/om drama on page -safety- neither had sex after meeting. She crushed on him as a child and he went on to at least make out with women so I don't know if I would consider this completely safe. Maybe safe with exception -ok epilogue that was several years into the future
Slate, a bear shifter, has always believed his mate would be just like him, and as such, has spent years visiting other clans, hoping to find her. He never thought she'd be human, despite his older brother and alpha, Cole, finding his mate in one. When he and his siblings are introduced to the new forest ranger, he knows instantly she's me want to be his...and then storms out.
Maura has returned home, something she knew she'd always do, and is ready to start her new position. She also can't help but be excited and nervous about seeing her childhood crus, Slate. At six years her senior, she knows he doesn't even know she exists, but that doesn't change her feelings for him, nor the fact she knows the truth about his family.
As Slate works through his new reality, he and his bear can't deny the pull to Maura and accept she's their fated one. Now he just has to figure out a way to share his secret, I aware she already knows, and figure out how to keep her, his family, and the town from the wolf pack trying to take it over.
One-click now and follow along as two people come up against fate and discover she knows what she's doing. On a purely personal note, I was disappointed reading about (not in real time, just as him thinking back) the bear shifter that threw herself at Slate months prior and snuck into his bed one morning before he left their town. This was unnecessary information and added nothing to the story. Also, it upset me that we had to hear that Slate has missed women before, and had come close a few times to having sex. Again, unnecessary. Plus, although we know he's a virgin, we're never told how far he went with those women before he and his bear needed to leave, knowing they weren't the one. For someone that has it drilled into him by his dad and Cole about how special your mate is, and waiting until you find them, he had a heck of a time straddling the line. And it's those things that lowered my rating, making me think of it hadn't been for his bear, he would've slept with as many girls as he could. Oh, and having to read about the waitress flirting with him, again, didn't need it. I'll continue reading the series, I just wish Slate and his history would be been different. Of course, Maura was a virgin in all ways, wanting no one but Slate her whole life. My preferences in no way detract from the author's talent, but solely reflect my reading tastes.
**I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.**
I did really like this one. She did leave for a few days thinking one thing, but realized she was overreacting. Didn't last long. Just one split second push away in the beginning. Great read. https://storiesinreview971130128.word...
Slate has searched and searched for his mate among the other bear shifter clans. He never considered that his mate would be human even though his brother Cole did. Maura has had a crush on Slate her whole life, it seems. He never noticed her. One day on a field trip, she saw him and Cole change into bears! She never told a soul. Now she is back in town to take the job of the local forest ranger. When Slate lays on on her, he knows she is the one. Will he be able to convince her that their connection is real?
Omgosh, how do I put into words how much I love M Merlin? How do I put into words how much I enjoyed my time with Slate and Maura? Their story was absolutely wonderful, intense and sexy/sweet. I loved Slate getting embarrassed over his treatment of Cole's mate and then it happens to him. Maura is a sweetie and totally into Slate. She might be a little shy but she quickly sees that he is serious in his pursuit of her. I cannot wait to see how Ruby and Gage find their mates in the next two books!!! 5 stars for Slate's Surrender!
This is a 4 book series by both Elisa Leigh and M. Merin. 2 books are by one author and the 2 by the other. The series is connected to each other, but seem to be able to be read as standalones too.
The Great: This is my first book by M. Merin, even though I was lucky enough to foster her as an author earlier in the year.
I was so glad I read this book! The story was captivating and I was so focused on finishing it! The characters were well developed and I really enjoyed the whole back story.
Slate was a stubborn ass who never believed his mate would be anything other than a shifter.
Enter Maura... the girl who grew up and went away is back in town. Slate doesn't see her coming but there she is! Is there more to Maura? Can she deal with his secret or does she have one of her own? (Also I love that name so much, always have.)
The story that unravels is not only such a great read but it has you wanting to get to the end!
The bad: I have a weird feeling about Gabe. Just saying... I don't like weird feelings and having to wait to read. I got my eye on you Gabe. 🤣🤣
Slate’s surrender is book two in the Black hills shifters series. Slate’s surrender is the first book of M. Merin’s that I have read but it wont be the last. This story is short, fast paced and an enjoyable read. I devoured this story within half an hour and was left wanting more. I found the writing style easy to follow, the characters likeable and the storyline entertaining. I liked Slate. I didn’t think I would like his broodiness too much but I did. I will say, I liked that his reluctance to claim Maura didn’t last long. I liked that Maura had known Slate’s secret for years and not told anyone. Her attraction towards Slate was clear to see, as was their passion for one another. The storyline for this book is easy to follow and an enjoyable read. I cannot wait for more books from this series. I need Ruby and Gabe stories now!
Slate’s Surrender is book 2 in the Black Hills Shifters series and is AMAZING!! I love M. Merin books and shifter books (especially bear shifters) when I found out that M. Merin was writing a shifter series with Elisa Leigh (another favorite) I was beyond excited. And both Cole and Slate’s books are freaking incredible!! I absolutely cannot wait for the rest of the series.
I was waiting to read Slate’s story. I knew he would be feisty but I’m glad he turned out to be a protective and loving shifter. Slate never thought he would find his mate in a human. When he does he fights it but loses the battle. Maura is the sweet girl who comes back to be the ranger of the town. She instantly feels the pull towards Slate her all time crush. They both have a connection that they didn’t expect to be so strong.
This is a sweet and short story. Can’t wait for the next.
I was totally nervous how this book was going to be because in the first book Slate came off as a jerk. But I actually really enjoyed this one! He wasnt a jerk. He was a protective possessive alpha who just cared deeply for his mate. I loved how Maura surprised them with her secret. And she was brave and sweet. Great epilogue! Cant wait for the next one.
Does a bear shift in the woods lol....this Black Hills Shifter series is about a gamily of bear shifters finding thier mates...Slate's Surrender is the second book. Slate is searching for his mate. Maura knows Slate's secrets. Loved this fast read....full of hot scenes, romance, and a mystery that is going to keep us guessing til the end.
I loved Slate. I have to admit I wanted to jump through the phone on him when he first found his mate but he came around quickly and this turned out to be another amazing story. I wish she would’ve played harder to get though since Slate was a little annoying by running at first just because she was human
Slate's Surrender is the second book in the Black Hills Shifter series. From the first book he sounded like he would be feisty. Although Slate never thought he would find his mate in a human; and was angry at first he becomes fiercely protective and loving. Maura has had a crush on Slate since she was young and even knows his secret but doesn't tell anyone. You get to see Cole and Aubree in here as well. The book has all the insta-love and HEAT your looking for. 100% safe read. Can't wait for the twins.
This is a great series written by 2 of my top ten favorite authors, so excited for the next book in this series. If you haven’t read this series or any of their other books you can’t go wrong with them!
This is a great series and I can't wait to read Ruby and Gabe's book M. Merin weird her characters and stories like they are her family. I wait patiently for all her books. This book is just as exciting as her ND series.
Loved it. Another awesome short novella for this series. I was a bit nervous to read this because in book 1 Slate was not a nice guy. Once Slate found his mate, everything fell into place. I can’t wait to read the rest of this series.
So happy that Slate got his HEA. Was not a fan of him brooding and being a butt in Cole’s story. Maura is the perfect match for Slate; I mean who better than someone who’s kept his secret for years?
My only problem with this and Cole's Salvation is that the men were older and virgins. LMAO over reviewers who think decent looking 2o-somethings should be more virginal than nuns - those readers encouraged my 5*.
This was a great story, it was well written with a great plot and great characters. Slate and Maura were perfect together. Their connection was strong and their chemistry was sexy. Maura and Slate made a great pair. I enjoyed their story. I'm looking forward to reading more of this series, Ruby and Gabe's stories. Thank you, M. Merin. Great work :)
Maura has always known about Slate being a black bear. The storyline was interesting and exciting ! Loved how Maura is a forest ranger and a strong women. Slate has been looking for his mate for years in other bears clans only to find his mates is a human.
I really liked it and it feels a lil ironic with her other series being “Northern Grizzlies”,but sadly their not shifters.... I think it would be soo cool if they were ;) I really love how these guys don’t want anyone but their mates... Though I think it might have been neat if at least one of the women soo far _had_Not_ been a virgin.... To me it would have been cool if for once the big sexy guy was the virgin and the woman was not..... I still say one of the sexiest things I’ve ever read in a book, was once in a time travel romance,of course set in Scotland, the well educated highland laird our heroine from the 1980’s falls for was a virgin and had absolutely no shame in asking her to “relieve him of his virtue “ ,...he knew she was from the future and didn’t judge her for not being a virgin ... I thought that was soo sweet and cool and sexy .... for a guy to be secure in himself and to ask.... that’s sooo neat to me... I mean why does the woman always have to be one ?
Anyway back to our story....
I loved the premise of this, the h ( who human) always drawn to her mate, and knowing he’s a shifter and being ok with h it,while the H is totally clueless ... add to that he is expecting his mate to be another bear 🐻 shifter ? Wow, that really sounded interesting to me.... aaaaaaaaaand it kinda was... only it was too short and too rushed... rushed because it was soo short ;( Now if this had been longer , maybe at least somewhere between this length and the length of this writers other books ? For me I feel this would have been maybe four or maybe five stars ⭐️,but while the premise was a good one I thought there just wasn’t enough to go w/it... Which was a real shame to me because I liked Slate and Maura and to me they were cheated... I like this series soo far but after reading two books the brevity is just not doing it justice.....
Ps. I liked Slate and Maura a lot but I feel I enjoyed Cole and Aubree more...
The next book of the series, "Black Hills Shifters" is Slate's story and his mate, Maura. I've been anxious and excited to read Slate's story since his older brother and alpha, Cole found his mate, Aubree, in his own story, the first one in this new series which is "Cole's Salvation". Now, we finally get to see deeper into Slate's character and find out why he was acting the way he was in Cole's story and in a few words for this story = IT WAS INCREDIBLE!!
The chemistry between Slate and his mate, Maura was off the charts HOT and the intense feelings that they feel when first meeting and how those emotions intensify as time passes by, even if its only a few days ;), can be felt through the pages of my kindle :)
Here, we get to see what's continuing to happen with the wolves but not the entire thing is uncovered. But, let's face it, if it did get resolved in this story than we wouldn't have plot-lines for either Ruby nor Gabe's stories with their mates. And I really want to read their stories and see them get their happy ending too :)
The ending was funny, beautiful and just simply plain AWESOME! I loved Slate and Maura's happy ending and with each other, they found their missing piece and becoming whole with one another and creating that beautiful and big family that they made together at the end :) <3
I'm so excited for the next book, which is Ruby's story! Let's see who the lucky man/mate to claim the fireball Ruby's heart will be ;)
I am completely in love with this family, and so excited to keep reading this series. These books may be novellas, but they are still jammed pack with love, action, suspense, and everything else that makes a book great. I am off to read Ruby's book so catch up to me so you see how good these books are. Mature eyes only due hot 🔥 shifter loving!!!
4.5 stars I really enjoyed this one! I wasn't sure I would like this book considering how Slate acted towards Cole when he found his mate. But I liked Slate and I liked Maura. Loved how their story progressed. I'm looking forward to Gabe and Ruby's stories. This is a really good series.

Slates surrender is book two in the Black Hills Shifter series. And like the first book this one didn't disappoint. Great short story full of Black Bear shifter hotness and the mates that bring them to their knees. Looking forward to reading more.
