Blake et Mortimer #25

O Vale dos Imortais - Livro 1

Rate this book

Yves Sente was born in Brussels in 1964. When he was little, he read La Marque Jaune, Jacobs' masterpiece, over and over again. Little did he know at that age that The Adventures of Blake and Mortimer would determine his destiny...!
In 1998, while he was working for Le Lombard, he worked with the cartoonist André Juillard on the script of La machination Voronov, a new episode of the Blake and Mortimer, a Cold War story acclaimed by critics and the public. Yves Sente then went on to write Les Sarcophages du 6e continent, where he reveals the young life of Professor Mortimer. He confirmed his writing talents with La Vengeance du Comte Skarbek (Dargaud; The Revenge of Count Skarbek, Europe Comics) and then Thorgal (Le Lombard; Cinebook/Europe Comics in English), taking over for Jean Van Hamme alongside Rosinski.

It is always a pleasure to get back into the world of Blake and Mortimer. These thrillers, often political, also combine a scifi aspect, as is the case here, especially in relation to technology. As it happens, the narrative follows directly the events of the very first story arc (Le Secret de l'Espadon - 1), which is why I wouldn’t recommend this volume as a first step in this great series. For that, try La Marque jaune and also one of my previous reviews where I introduce these characters and their creator, the brilliant E.P. Jacobs (https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...).

Yves Sente is a great scenarist and puts together a promising thriller. It is even more fascinating due to its connection to the Espadon trilogy. And yes, I really was tempted to re-read those before diving in this one. As for Berserik and Van Dongen’s art, it is beautifully in accordance with the original style, keeping up with the characteristics of ‘la ligne claire’.

It is always hard however to give an opinion when you only half of the story. Indeed, this is only the first tome of this story arc, but you can be sure I’ll be getting it as soon as it available.

Another Christmas present that is a welcome and long overdue comic starring Blake and Mortimer in their already 25th adventure/comic. The negative part is perhaps that this one concerns a part 1, so here is me wondering when we'll get part 2. But that is undoubtedly another Christmas to come.

First off another great new Blake and Mortimer comic this time made by the combined talents of Belgian and Dutch talent. Of course no Blake and Mortimer would be without a shedload of text balloons that reads like a novel, while the comic itself was never drawn itself even by Jacobs with a lot of action the drawing style is very clear and has not changed at all. It is a very clear and crisp way of drawing with a lot of attention to detail. The only really action panels is the bit with the Swordfish planes and the spitfires.
Like all B&M comics there is a lot of emphasis on the story but the fun is in the pictures as well and this book would have undoubtedly would have gotten a 5 stars if it only is not a first part of a story which makes us waiting for another year for its finish.

The inheritors of the Jacobs legacy of Blake and Mortimer have so far given the original series a load of credit, this one starts right after the first three installments of Jacobs himself. While Jacobs has written and drawn 12 comics the continuation authors have now surpassed him as this is the 25 comic in the series now the newer series counts 13.

I am sure Jacobs himself would have been more than pleased with the direction and steady course of the series without him. The amounts of sells of this comic still today shows that Blake and Mortimer still have plenty of fans even if this series started long ago in a different century when after the Nazi threat the next threat was considered Communist and the Yellow menace (which is not PC today be still being very much used by some current politicians especially of the orange variety). These books follow the world of Jacobs in which the British Empire still rules and it offers us still great scifi-esque stories that are very well constructed.

This series should be read from the Jacobs written and drawn books onward to get the charm and the story as best. I am so really looking forward to the next Christmas when I get the next one.

For those in the know, in this case not me, The Valley of the Immortals credits to Yves Senta, Tuen Berserk and Peter Van Dongan is a thriller mystery graphic novel with a slightly older demographic than the older Tin Tin adventure books. Coupla points: It is published by 9th Cinebook which to me suggests a name with a better fit than graphic novel. The reference to Tin Tin is because it shares some of the same creative talent and stylistic approach as the older comic book. I was not a fan of TinTin but I can see the resemblance.

The Valley of the Immortals is book one in a multi-part adventure and is in turn among the last titles in the Adventure of Blake and Mortimer series. I did not do my usual due diligence and got this thinking it was the first of this set of companion adventurer, heroes when it is near the last. I shall eventually correct my error and go for the series opener: The Secret of the Swordfish Part I. This is to tell you that this is a rollicking adventure. That it works as a standalone. It does not have me impatient to collect them all.

There are nods to Doc Savage, Indiana Jones and the old cliff hanger movies shorts. We have the mysterious far East. With the evil Fu Manchu style evil power-hungry villain, but without the phony pidgeon English. There are a few women, mostly as wall paper but one or two may make herself known before the exciting climax. So this is clearly intended for a younger male reader.

The time frame is post World War III (3) with looks and gizmos that range from the 1940’s to some high tech 1990’s Jet fighters. Almost a mashup of seam-punk and post modernism.

Of course, the plot revolves around defeating an evil war lord, encroaching Chinese Communists, and against them good guy, western facing locals and our heroes; British master spies and around good guys Blake and Mortimer. Also of course there is an ancient something or other that is The Secret. Yes the secret which must not get into the wrong hands! There are traps and explosions, car and airplane chases, the threat of terrible torture and wise words from museum experts. What this all means is relatively unimportant, just keep things rolling forward.

The art is finely detailed without being too layered or cluttered. I am a fan of Alan Moore, but in comparing the two, Moore has to have all manner of stuff going on in his panels; that too often shatter open, making it hard to sequence the page as intended. No such issues with The Valley. Scenes have depth but they do not tend to make any one panel more important that the story line.

This was hard to finish. The ligne claire art style is serviceable but extremely static and uninspired. The writing is horrible, it’s so dry, every little action is over explained. The story is very boring too, not a very good thriller. I fell asleep 3 times while attempting to start the book and once in, I could only read it 6 to 10 pages at a time, anything more would put me to sleep.

The action follows directly from the end of the "Espadon" book... And never actually stops. It's fascinating to see how Senté weaves the real-world events with the imaginary ones in Blake and Mortimer's timeline.

Great plot, perfect artwork.

The worst thing of it all is that we have to wait for part 2!

Nice comic, the drawings are very good in EP Jacobs style. The plot is nicely set in post WW2 setting of the cold war. Pleasure to read.

Two volumes (in the Portuguese edition) that will provide a couple of hours of enjoyable reading.
"The Valley of the Immortals" provides a very entertaining and thrilling dive into the ancient Chinese culture and myths, while featuring some old friends.

Another well written and drawn adventure, with a stronger presence by Mortimer, and a few ocasional (but heroic) appearances by Blake. Some of the secondary characters are rather interesting/"colorful" and surprising at times.

I really loved the historical Chinese backstory, and all the action around Hong Kong and Kowloon.

My 4-star rating is related to some minor "loose ends" by the end of the story, but don't let that stop you. All in all, this is another good and consistent book in the B&M universe that will not disappoint most fans.

Good heavens. This entry in the Blake and Mortimer series took me a few attempts to finish. It's wordy -- as Blake and Mortimer usually is -- with a dense plot and almost too many characters to keep track of. The plot sort of streamlines by the end, which is good, because this is only the first part of a two-part tale, and I needed some kind of narrowing of the storyline before jumping into part two.

Once again, the writers dive into the early days of the series, with this story set immediately after the three-part The Secret of the Swordfish. It wasn't a gap in the timeline that needed to be filled, but it does provide an interesting setting: China in the post-WWII era with the background of the struggle between the Communists and the Nationalists, Chiang Kai-Shek and his forces having retreated to Taiwan.

We'll see where this story goes in Part 2.
