When social worker Nica Anders indulges in one night of sexual passion with delicious Deaf man Cam Thompson, the last thing she expects is to see him the next day while visiting her dying client. He’s Cassie’s grandson and caregiver, the one treat she shouldn’t have tasted. Now her job is on the line, demanding she stay away.

But their attraction is building like a raging inferno and Nica can’t help but get burned.

Cam Thompson’s life is a mess. He’s losing his grandmother, the one person who’s supported him his whole life, and her dying wish is for him to settle down with a good woman—specifically her social worker Nica Anders. Despite Nica trying to hold tight to her ethics, he’s falling for her hard and fast.

After spending her childhood coming up with new episodes to her favorite sitcoms instead of sleeping, Laura Brown decided to try her hand at writing and never looked back. A hopeless romantic, she’s been drawn to love stories since a young age. She lives in Massachusetts with her family, and yes, that includes feline members! Laura’s been hard of hearing her entire life but didn’t start learning ASL until college, when her disability morphed from an inconvenience to a positive part of her identity. It’s important to her to create strong, competent characters with disabilities, as she didn’t have that growing up. At home the closed captioning is always on, lights flash with the doorbell, and hearing aids are sometimes optional.

As a quadriplegic I was immediately drawn to the premise of this book and with each turn of the page I was pulled in even more by a deaf man seeking to prove himself to a judgmental mother. Add in grief over the loss of a loved one and readers will find this an emotionally intense tale that will take you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions. From its sizzling forbidden romance to its realistic portrayal of being deaf in a hearing world, I found this to be a well-crafted tale that I hope to revisit as there’s a few threads still waiting to be sewn up.

Cameron Thompson is the lone deaf child in a family of hearing people. The only other individuals to understand what he goes through are his grandparents which forms a special bond between them that has him caring for them during their twilight years. Growing up his mother tried to ignore his disability by forcing him to talk instead of signing, employing both mental and physical methods to make him appear as “normal” as possible. Even though his own parents were deaf, Cam’s father was no savior and let his wife treat Cam in such a hurtful way. Seeing his father become so emasculated by his mother has Cam doubting marriage and commitment and makes for a few roadblocks throughout this story on the way to HEA. Cam’s a sexy hero who rose above his difficult childhood to embrace his deafness. He’s extremely hardworking and it took a lot to pull him away from it. There’s a lot weighing on him though, feelings of inadequacy courtesy of his mother along with a tendency to assume the worst and jumping to conclusions when Nica’s just trying to protect him. These moments were frustrating and a bit overly dramatic. Despite that, I still found Cam to be a sweet and sensual hero who proved himself time and again...and who just needed to believe in himself.

Veronica Anders also had a less than ideal childhood with her parents divorcing when she was young but remaining friends. Their divorce was amicable but it still weighs on her today, affecting her relationships by sabotaging them before they’ve barely begun. When readers first meet Nica she seems serious and straightforward, but her instant attraction to a stranger in a bar shows a different side to her which leads to a life-altering one-night stand that becomes something so much more in the morning. In the morning light the discovery of her bedmate’s identity has her concerned about her job as he’s the grandson of one of her clients. Though she tries to fight her attraction he’s too much of a temptation which puts her career and her future in doubt as someone close to him disparages her and leaves her fighting for her job...and ultimately her relationship with him. Nica’s a likable heroine, one you can see yourself hanging out with. She’s strong-willed and playful when it comes to her and her girlfriends with each supportive of the others. I especially enjoy her friendship with Lexie as Lexie pushes her to live a little, to finally let go of being “all work and no play”. Lexie’s fun-loving, sassy, and her flirtatious interactions with Cam’s friend Grant have me hoping we’ll see more of this pair as they sizzle in each other’s presence.

On a whole this is a well-crafted romance with only one or two flaws. When it comes to the narrative the story feels a bit rough around the edges. Some of the sentences felt a bit incomplete with a flow that isn’t as smooth as I normally find either and it pulled me out of the story a time or two to reread paragraphs. Despite these small quibbles I still found this a satisfying story with appealing characters. Not having read this author before I didn’t know what to expect, but I appreciate her depiction of living with a disability. It’s a realistic portrayal that touched on the physical and emotional aspects of being deaf, a depiction that added a unique layer to an already drool-worthy hero. Cam and Nica were an appealing pair whose interactions were sexy and supportive. They had a few misunderstandings that frustrated me but luckily didn’t last too long as readers raced to the conclusion. Alongside this likable main couple was an equally entertaining cast of secondary characters, some that I saw as friends and one or two that were foes. Those who were friends put a smile on my face during playful interactions and endeared themselves to me through their unwavering support. Those who were foes more than earned that name as they were truly unlikable and hurtful in their actions. Through each turn of the page I found myself rooting for Cam and Nica and hoping to find more authors willing to depict characters with disabilities in the future as we too deserve a HEA.

What better way to acknowledge Valentine's Day with a romance? Well, maybe with one that wasn't as stressful as this one made me! :)

A one-night stand turns disastrous of Nica when she realizes she hooked up with her client's caregiver. The consequences from that reverberate throughout the rest of the book. Unlike the two previous novels from Brown that I've read, we have older characters (30 or 31) and their relationship struggles center more on careers and relationship dynamics they have to unlearn. This book also had more hearing characters as Nica is an ASL-fluent hearing person.

Cam's grandmother in the hospice reminded me of my dad. :( Brown has done a really good job in showing grief in Signs of Attraction and Friend (with Benefits) Zone, but it sure has made me cry in every book so far. The loneliness and isolation that Cam felt when sitting shiva with his family really got to me, too.

P.S. Cam's mom is a big jerk.

This was such a good read but so emotional - prepare yourself for tears! One of the main characters is Deaf and the other is a social worker for the Deaf grandmother of the Hero. The author is Hard of Hearing and I felt she did a great job developing characters that are Deaf and Hard of Hearing. I'm not a fan of work/power imbalance scenarios in romance, however I think the way that conflict of interest was handled in this story made it less problematic. This is a shorter book, but it deals with really heavy topics so take care of yourself first before delving in!

I adored this book so much. It somehow makes what should be a horrible, messy tragic situation into a lovely, warm, heartfelt romance by two characters that just have to be together despite the obstacles, external and internal. This is such a warm, fun, lovely, read.

Popsugar Reading Challenge 2024 - 09. A book by a Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing author

I'd initially given the book three stars, but I have to change my rating because Veronica worked my entire nervous system. I hate passive-aggressiveness. I especially hate passive-aggressiveness from people who then wield it as a weapon. Veronica knew and said multiple times that the relationship violated ethics and that she should lose her job...but that didn't stop her. So why the hell are you crying now?

Contrary to what many might believe, I do not enjoy writing bad reviews. I don't choose books with the anticipation of skewering them. I'm not even that hard to please.
But worthy reads are getting harder and harder to come by, which has made my favorite relaxing pastime rather toxic for me. And I will by God post my opinion whether positive or negative. It's just a shame there is so much negative out there these days.

Now, moving on -

This book has Deaf characters in it but is not about the implications of one half of the couple being Deaf, in this case the hero. The story wasn't what I envisaged and that was a little disconcerting, but that said it's not a bad book.
I want to make it clear that it had a lot of potential. The writing was decent, the plot wasn't the usual recycled crap and the characters well-defined for the most part.

That doesn't necessarily mean likeable, however, and while Cam was easy to connect to, Veronica was a loathsome, entitled, pass-agg cow.
I couldn't stand her nickname, either. Nica. How was that even pronounced? And why would she and everyone else acted like she had a different personality assigned to each name? Weird.
Nitpicking, I know.

So, she knew from the outset that her involvement with Cam was a conflict of interest, yet she pursued him anyway. Yet still continued to bang on about her job, her job, her job.

And yet - again - had the nerve to attack Cam and resent him for his dedication to HIS job. Wtf kind of buggered up logic is that?
She pissed and moaned about him not putting her first before his career, but she constantly laid on the guilt that she was risking her job by being with him. Kept spreading her legs though, didn't she? If her job was that important to her she shouldn't have acted the slag by getting blootered on strong drink and shagging a stranger then, eh?

Nice behaviour for someone whose position is supposed to be held above reproach.

She was exactly the whingey, bratty type that I loathe, letting others lives dictate her own faulty beliefs and whimpering about how her life sucks because she dared to fall for someone...even though she denied falling for him. She lied, she was unethical and the best part was when she lashed out at that sweet, devoted man and dumped him for 'working too late and not putting her first' and the guy had been busting his arse to save her stupid job!

With the life Cam had as a young boy and all the rejection he faced by his family - by his own mother who humiliated him by refusing to learn sign herself and forcing him to learn to speak- HE should have been the difficult one. But no. Veronica hadn't taken a hard knock in her life but for some reason she was just a spoilt, immature bitch.
Oh, her parents got divorced?
Boo fucking hoo. They remained true to one another anyway, never remarried others and always put her first. They still loved one another and stayed friendly and close for HER. But yet she had it so bloody hard.
🙄🙄 Gimme a break.

Cam's own mother tied his hands behind his back so he couldn't sign.
He was the better character who deserved much better than what he got.

Veronica was also STUPID along with being obnoxious. Who in this day and age is ignorant enough to gorge themselves on raw cookie dough and brownie batter and make someone lick it off her?
Salmonella or e. Coli much?? 🤮🤮

There are SOOO many warnings against this - I mean, people DIE from food poisoning or at least can become so ill as to wind up in hospital. Kids have been violently sickened from parents letting them lick the cookie bowl or mixer blades.

And sorry, but raw food is gross and wiping it all over the guy you're not supposed to be banging - but are - so you can suck it off him is gross.

This might seem like a minor quibble, however the cookie dough porn is a sore point with me. I tend to get irate when confronted with overt stupidity...or possibly the willful ignorance of facts for the purpose of 'artistic license.'

Strong potential, decent writing skills, but poor, inconsistent characterisation, inexplicable reasoning by heroine and lazy fact-checking. Don't recommend, and I'm done here.

"You two are like my husband and me. We complemented each other in drive, in ambition. Oh, they say you need only one person in the driver’s seat. That’s for wimps. You need both people in the driver’s seat, both people steering the relationship in the right direction. Otherwise you have one person dragging the other."

I liked the story in this book, but by the end of the book I really didn’t like Nica.

At the beginning I liked the characters and how they interacted with each other. Then Nica did everything possible to sabotage her and Cam’s relationship. I understand that she was worried about her job, but after she decided that a relationship with Cam was worth it, she had no other excuses. She constantly hides things from Cam and doesn’t really let him get to know her. The one time Cam does something wrong (he works late), it was because he was working on a way to help Nica not lose her job, and without even telling Cam that his long hours are bothering her, she just ends their relationship.

There were some side characters that I liked (Lexie and Rebecca) and I would definitely want to read their books. On the other hand, Cam’s mother was a controlling, manipulative and toxic person which was a fact that everyone in the family knew and yet no did anything about it. She was horrible to everyone, but mostly to Cam. Everyone just let her get away with everything which made me so angry as they were letting her do those things.

I want to continue with this series (which will hopefully be books about Lexie and Rebecca) as the story wasn’t bad in this book, I just hated a side character and I really didn’t like Nica.

Laura Brown's "A Perfect Mistake" was a fun romance spun around an uncommon situation. Brown, herself hard-of-hearing, opened my eyes more to the world of people in the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community.. Having had experiences in the Deaf community, I applaud how Brown honored them and created believable and interesting characters in that world.

Now for the romance, it was steamy. If you blush easily, don't bring this book to read while waiting at the DMV like I did. Oh boy. As a reader, I tend to shy away from romances that are more descriptive of bedroom activities. If you like books that are more descriptive of the physical romance, then this is your book! (If you tend to be more modest like me, I just skimmed over these sections.)

Beyond the erotic elements and the involvement of the Deaf community, this is a well-written book. I found myself not wanting to put it down. I really cared about the characters and how their story would unfold.

I quite enjoyed this story. I'd never read a romance with a deaf male lead in it before, so that was refreshing - and I know very little about the deaf community, so that was also interesting. There were parts of the story that made me uncomfortable - the people in Veronica's life who completely ignored her when she said that she couldn't be in a relationship with Cam due to the ethics of it and her job. I don't love meddlers in love stories, but I especially don't enjoy when they meddle despite knowing if they're successful, it puts their victim in an untenable situation.

Lots to enjoy here, and a relationship that felt real with real issues. I could appreciate Veronica's frustration and how hard it was for her to resist Cam when he was right in front of her, and also when he was grieving and she wanted to help.

I'd come back to this author!

Laura Brown's books are always filled with so much heart and heat. This was no exception. Nica and Cam had great chemistry from the get go, and although they had reasons to resist it, they had a sweet grandmom playing matchmaker and urging them to reconsider their foolish notions. There are so many fun secondary characters from the adorable Cassie to Cam and Nica's friends and family to a villain who is fun to love to hate. Laura does such an excellent job in all her books of immersing the reader in a world where some characters communicate via ASL without it ever becoming an obstacle... except when she wants the reader to feel that frustration of partial understanding. For readers who love to gain awareness of other perspectives while falling in love, I highly recommend this book.

I really enjoyed reading this accidental love story about Cam and Nica.

Having a cast of deaf characters and a lot of the dialogue in ASL just added another layer to the seamless writing. I'm not sure if I've read a story centred around deaf characters quite like this one, I stepped into their world and saw it from the inside. I left feeling like I knew more about the deaf community and some of the challenges and heartbreak that come with living in a silent world.

The middle of the story lagged a bit for me, but otherwise, this was an easy and enjoyable read, full of memorable characters and a delightful love story.

True fit

This deserves more than 5 Stars! Cam and Nica's story was so full. The plot was amazing. This story had me glued to it and not wanting to put it down. I even wept. Cam was such a strong and loving character. Nica was his match! Cam is deaf and so is his grandmother who he cares for. He meets a beautiful woman while at a bar with friends and she knows ASL. After a passionate night their world's collide because of her job. She is his grandmother 's social worker.

This story is a keeper for me! Loved it! I can't wait to read the next one in the series.

A passionate, fast-paced and beautifully written romance!

Veronica “Nica” Anders is a dedicated, strictly by the book social worker who isn’t in the habit of hooking up with men in bars. But sexy Deaf man Cam Thompson is too good to resist. When Nica learns Cam is her clients' grandson, she knows she can’t cross ethical lines by giving into her heart.

I really enjoyed this story. It had me smiling, crying, fuming, yelling, and caring. Nica and Cam were a wonderful couple, despite their pasts and families making it difficult for them to see it. I recommend this story and I look forward to more from this author.

A Perfect Mistake follows Nica and Cam as they discover each other. There is a lot to love about this simple romance story. The characters are believable and have unique personalities. Even the second string is interesting and memorable. The plot is relatable and representation for the deaf and Jewish cultures is done with grace and style. It's a family drama that avoids being gritty.

I love the interactions between the characters, even between Cam and his mother. The relationships are real and touch on topics that everyone can relate to. The mother who expects her kids to be a reflection of her, the child who abandoned their parent because she didn't meet the standard set by the new spouse, the supportive parent that made the child face up to the situation they were put in. Brown did a great job of presenting and contrasting the different types of child/parent relationships.

While I love the book and would recommend it, it does have a few flaws. Nica deals with emotional stress by baking and/or eating sweets and doesn't exercise. Yet, she has a flat stomach and a perfect figure. It's not something that takes center stage in the story, but it's something that stood out and bothered me.

I also found it to be a big stretch that Cam and Nica had not met previously. Cam was the sole caregiver for his grandmother for years, but he was never at her home when Nica visited, not even after the grandmother was so sick that she could do basic things for herself. I've worked in elder care before and if it's bad enough that the person can't care for themselves then they either have a family member who can be with them, a dedicated caregiver or are placed in a nursing home type situation so that someone is always there to make sure they are ok. I found it hard to buy into the grandmother being so sick she needed a caregiver but was fine with one that worked 60 to 70 hours a week.

If you enjoy romance novels with strong characters and a well-written representation of the deaf and/or Jewish culture then this is the book for you.

Another fun story

I really enjoyed this book, my second by this author. I live in New England as well, so it's fun to read local city names. The deaf world is truly unique. I was a special ed teacher and had a hearing child with deaf parents. With other language issues there is usually a community to support everyone. This is not true for the deaf, unless they go to an artificial setting that is all deaf, which still isn't helpful. And, unfortunately, parents can be like Rhonda. Having written that, I really liked Cameron and Nica. They each had their issues and finally found a way to work them out. Family is often chosen and not what you are born with.

A Perfect Mistake was SUCH a good read! Nica and Cam are so well-developed that I fell head-over-heels in love with their characters. The ethical problems and extreme heat throughout this story provide intense pacing that make the book hard to put down. I couldn't wait to find out how the story would end, and the ending was worth the wait. Bonus points for all the drool-worthy desserts throughout the story. Laura Brown continues to be an author to watch! I look forward to anything else she writes.

A perfecty sweet romance

This is a sweet story of a chance meeting leading to almost instant-love, but not without complications. I love Laura's books and her weaving in of deaf culture into her romance stories. This is a very cozy love story with a satisfying ending.

A sweet and heartfelt story. Good chemistry between Cam and Nica. It would have been more satisfying to see some resolution of Cam’s parents. They didn’t get any consequences which was frustrating as they played a large part in Cam and Nica’s relationship.
