About the author

Stephen John

Steve is a retired business executive and former sports journalist who now writes cozy mysteries with a twist of sass and suspense. His Miss Fortune novels—set in the beloved world created by Jana DeLeon—blend small-town charm with fast-paced adventure, earning him six #1 rankings in Amazon’s action/adventure category.

Steve’s fiction career began in 2008 with Amazon’s Kindle Worlds, where he was invited to craft stories using established characters. His sharp dialogue and tightly woven plots quickly made him a fan favorite in the Miss Fortune universe.

Beyond cozy mysteries, Steve has co-authored two thrill-packed titles—Devil’s Face and Gray Ghost—with bestselling author David Wood in the Dane Maddock Action Adventure Series. He also collaborated with Jesse Jacobson on Rainhorse, a gritty Western tale of justice and redemption. His standalone novel Night Music showcases his range, blending suspense and emotional depth in a story all his own.

Steve’s first book, Deal Me In, is a nonfiction deep dive into the lives of twenty poker legends, commissioned by Phil Hellmuth himself. His time with poker and sports celebrities—including Doyle Brunson, Jennifer Harman, Johnny Chan, and basketball stars like LeBron James and Rajon Rondo—inspired him to keep telling great stories.

When he’s not writing, Steve enjoys life in the Pacific Northwest with his wife, children, and grandchildren. You might also catch him performing in the Seattle music scene with his acoustic duo, Latitude 47—proof that good stories and good tunes never go out of style.

TOO MANY ERRORS!!

I was very disappointed in this book. Words were missing, extra words were added where they shouldn’t have been, and words were duplicated It was very distracting while trying to read the book. Also, there were many grammatical errors which were also very distracting. The author needs to story grammar and have the book proof read.

Stephen John delivers a fast, funny, and irresistibly engaging ride in Fortune and Glory. His punchy writing style snaps from page to page with the confidence of an author who knows exactly how to entertain. The prose is tight, energetic, and full of personality—never a wasted word, never a dull moment.

The storyline hooks you immediately and keeps tightening its grip. John blends action, mystery, and character-driven momentum with a light touch that makes the whole experience feel effortless. The pacing is spot‑on, carrying you through twists, turns, and clever reveals without ever losing clarity or charm.

And the humor—sharp, well‑timed, and genuinely laugh‑out‑loud—elevates everything. John has a knack for balancing tension with wit, giving the book a buoyant, joyful rhythm even when the stakes climb high. It’s the kind of humor that feels natural to the characters and enriches the entire narrative.

The plot is enjoyable, but there Mr. John just isn’t Jana Deleon. For example, “Insert verbiage here,” Gertie screamed. “More verbiage” Character A screamed. A little variation would be nice. For example, “More verbiage here” character A sneered sarcastically. Am I being nit picky? You bet, and I’m sorry/not sorry. The originals are just so good, I can’t help myself! Gertie and Ida Belle aren’t nearly as bad a$$ in John’s hands as they are in the original series, and that’s disappointing. However, the plot is there and it’s a good one. Basically, these books will tide you over until the real Miss Fortune makes her next appearance from Deleon!

A Cold Case Heats Up

As Fortune and Carter try to find their way after a breakup, they find themselves together when a thirty year old cold case draws them back together in California. Helped by Fortunes two senior adult lady investigative assistants, the color case is solved. This is the book for all who enjoy mystery, danger and the prospect of death for Fortune and Carter as he tries to help a Marine buddy.

Four stars instead of five...

Because of the errors. Great story but he needs a competent proofreader. I am a big grammar/spelling/punctuation Nazi and errors take away from my enjoyment of the book.

The characters are so captivating and endearing, and the plots are highly entertaining. I'm looking forward to more Miss Fortune books set in Sinful.

Fortune Fake

Weak attempt to write a Fortune book, characters are so uncharacteristic, Ida Bel tired and sleepy at 0800, never! There was no humor in this book and the ending was weak.

Genius

I've never seen one author pick up the characters from another author and make it flow so well! Amazing work!
