I read this book in High School, and it is still one of the saddest stories to date. I see things differently now as an adult. As a kid I felt bad for Lennie, as an adult I feel bad for George, Curly and Curly's old dog 🐕. I understand why this is one classic that will be remember for generations.
When I read this book too I didn't like because it was just plain boring for me have a book and just read it. This why I have three reason for not liking this book. When I read this book it was just plain boring for me to sit there and read it. In my life time I would never read this book again not less if I have to.
My first reason for not liking this book is it was another book for me read and I thought that it was going to be one of the books that was going to catch your attention from start to finish but it didn't. I try to read it and I couldn't just get into it because it was just boring for me to read. So what I read the first couple of pages it was getting good but after that I put the book down and stop. The next I came home and try to pick the book up again and read 3 pages and then stop reading because it was just dumb.
The second reason when my teacher try read it in class I was falling a sleep alot because it was just so boring because I could take it anymore so that is why I stop reading it. So I hope I never get to read this again because it just so corny. I would pleaded not to this book because it is so boring as a book. I mean this book didn't have a good ending for it to end and the start.
My final reason for not liking this book is because of the characters, setting, and plot on how it start to the end. Also the characters names I didn't like because their names sounded like nicknames and some real names. The name curly didn't have a meaning to the book and it made the book not good at all. So next time I hope I can review it and get into for the first time and like. I just didn't see an interesting point to this book.
In conclsion to this essay the meaning for me was I didn't like this book for the three reasons I wrote down. I hoping for the next time I read this book it would be good and be the best it could be for the book.
John Steinbeck did a wonderful job with the release Of Mice and Mice. Showing us the smallest thing can be a symbol of something. For instance Lennie's puppy was symbolic to things of joy and new beginings. Kandy's dog was symbol of treachery and disappointment, after the dogs death. And most of all the farm and what it meant to its workers. This is why I love this book.
Lennie's puppy was promised to him by his partner George. When they finally moved to the farm ne of their co workers had a puppy for and he gave it to Lennie. Giving Lennie the puppy would mean that he and George would be raising their own farm. And Lennie would be tendin them rabbits just like he was promised. Basically dogs was mentioned in the book alot wheather it was a death or a birth of a dog.
Kandy's dog was a matured sheep herder, and companion to the old one handed man. The dog was all he had left next to his pay cheack at the end of the month. But why have wealth if you have no one to spend on.
Last but not least the "Farm" where people found success and 50. dollars at the end of the month. Also finding friends and enemies who later became a friend.
So find out for yourself if Steinbeck really showed us the symbolism of a man getting a promised puppy. Secondly another man who dog died and ended his life. Finally a place where me found success and handle things like the men they were.
This little gem of a book says so much in such few pages. The idea of the American Dream is crushed and suffocated elegantly by Steinbeck.
I appreciate a good uplifting American success story like Ragged Dick, but Steinbeck gives you a real slice of life. I'm not a cynic, but hooray for something real to life.
As an immigrant I saw my parents go through some tough times and this book resonated in me so clearly. I suppose it sort of depends on what you are bringing to the book when you read it because I didn't get or relate to the Grapes of Wrath whatsoever, but a friend of mine from the Central Valley was reading her family history in that book.
So my point is, Of Mice and Men is alot shorter than Grapes, so I recommend this one.
I first read this book twenty-two years ago. I have read it at least three other times since then. This is one of my most favorite peices of fiction. The story is cruel and horrible, but that is what makes it so good. I can't believe that there are people out there that would have this book banned. The message of this book is powerful. I recommend getting the book with the study notes so that you don't miss anything Steinbeck is trying to say.
I recommend reading this because it's such a classic and it's a quick read. Although I only gave it three stars, it could merit more...it's just not really my favorite genre or style (a bit sparse for my taste). But the substance of the book is very worthwhile and interesting...how loneliness and dreams and stark reality and the need for companionship and attention all intersect, and what we each do in response to those things - important stuff that is relevant to everyone.
Of mice and men was a very sad book what happens to george at the end of the story which we should all conclude that george died at the end getting shot george of course had diff. personality traits then lennie taller, strong build, soft from inside, etc. but lennie always took advantage of george's behavior where as sensitive as george he would cry. I learn that this book is a very good book when you find who your companion is in your life, where you could trust someone.
Good short read. Decided to buy this book after seeing a little bit of the movie when it was on tv one night, which is really good. I read it during my photography class and it only took three days, so why did my teacher fail me?
