Nice Concepts & Steps Summary.

Focused more on individuals and small businesses (although concepts apply to any valuation). No number crunching. Lots of useful references.

Review:
A lot of repetition, very little math. There were really only a couple useful chapters (mainly due to repetition). The Case Studies weren't all that great, mainly tales of why you should have hired a professional which, interestingly, is the whole crux of the book. Oh, and the repetition. Did I mention the repetition already, because there was a lot of repetition.

Summary of the book:
There are lots of situations that warranty the valuation of a business. Buying, selling, divorce, death, taxation, etc...

If you're interested in buying a business, you do a little market research and use a quick&dirty rule-of-thumb valuation using The Business Reference Guide ($140 print, $19 monthly online). If the business looks attractive, you hire a CPA, a lawyer and a valuation professional. Negotiate the price. Warren Buffet says: "Price is what you pay, Value is what you get."

If you plan on selling a business, start 2 years early by getting your books audited by a third party and strengthen your cash flow and credit rating. Hire a valuation professional to get an estimate of the companies value and a lawyer to help with the deal.

If you already own a business and are concerned that someday you might die, get divorced, etc..., then hire an estate planner (lawyer) and a valuation professional.

If you mistakenly picked up this book thinking it might help you with valuation math with lots of examples, hire a valuation professional.
