Finding God's Life for My Will: His Presence Is the Plan

Rate this book
The lead singer, songwriter, and guitarist for award-winning contemporary Christian band Tenth Avenue North shows readers that by seeking God first and focusing on serving Him, we can live daily in His will.

"Perhaps God isn't giving me the plan because He wants to be the plan."

This was the aha moment for Mike Donehey after years of wrestling with his obsession to know God's specific plans for his life. He came to the realization that waiting for absolute certainty from God before making decisions may seem uberspiritual, but it can lead to a life of intense stress, paralyzing fear, and crushing regret--just the opposite of the freedom granted to those living a Christ-filled life.

"This is my story...how I gave up begging to know God's will and began to ask His life to come and change my will."

With his signature humor and relentless hunger for God, Mike will show you that discovering the Father's purpose and plan for our lives is not the shell game that we all too often make it out to be. If you're unsure what to do next, take heart and accept the ultimate invitation: learn to see God as the plan, not simply the formula to the plan.

Tenth Avenue North was my first concert. They were on their The Light Meets The Dark tour. So, yeah, they've been an influence in my life for a long time. Their latest album, Followers, one of their songs incorporated my confirmation verse. They are a special band that has really played a role in my life. I saw them again in concert when they were at Winter Jam 2017.

I say all that backstory to say, I was so excited to have the opportunity to read a book by Mike Donehey and it did not disappoint. I got an ecopy and I highlighted the heck out of that book. Thing after thing had me thinking, "YES! That's me!". I could really relate to what he talked about with wanting to know the future and overthinking things.

I loved the tone of the book. It was very conversational and you felt like you got to know Donehey. He's a good storyteller. He doesn't make the points difficult but he doesn't spare any punches either. He shares the lessons he's learned from mistakes made and life lived. It's really cool to see how God has worked in his life and is working in his life.

Michael's point is all about surrender and really desiring God above all else. If we are seeking Him, we rest in His presence and can relax about "the plan".

I definitely want to own this book when it comes out. Thanks to NetGalley for a free copy. All opinions are my own. A favorable review was not required.

You have to have some fear before you can take courage. Uncertainty precedes faith, and doubt must take hold before we can exude trust. Trust is what grows in our hearts when we give our doubts over to the love of God..

Prior to reading this book, I heard a podcast of Mike on Spotify, Chasing the Beauty. I had no idea that he had a podcast, hence I listened to a few episodes that had me hooked. On one episode, he spoke about a book he wrote, so this sparked my curiosity to know more about Mike who is also my favorite singer from the band, Tenth Avenue North. Tenth Avenue North is my favorite band, their songs have been so uplifting to me and God has used their songs to speak to me: By Your Side, Oh My Dear, By Your Side, Don't Stop the Madness, The Struggle, Grace, Beloved and so many other songs!

I was inspired reading though all the trials that Mike had to endure as a singer and not a person in general. I will say this was not a memoir per say but you did hear most about how his faith is integrated to every part of his life.

Finding God's will is not a concrete place where God is just going to show us EVERYTHING and the EXACT place where we are going to be. His will is to love mercy, bear fruit and act justly. That is it? Yes.. That is what scares us the most right because in our uncertain moments. God wants us to trust Him. In our doubt. He wants us to trust Him.. In our despair. He wants us to trust Him. Mike candidly tells us that we are loved and treasured not because of something we can do FOR God but because God the Father is just Love. He loves everything about us and just wants us to relax and enjoy.

At this moment. I really needed to read this book due to the uncertain circumstances I am currently facing.

Highly recommended to everyone!

Michael Donehey is the lead singer of Tenth Avenue North and a really great guy. ( I can say that, as I have had the privilege of meeting him years ago at a youth convention.) I enjoyed "Finding God's Life for My Will" and it drove home to me the issue we all have with submitting our wants and desires to God--our will to do what we want. Over and over the author shares his failed attempts at life choices that obviously were not in God's plan, and it reminded me of all those failed dreams that led me back to Him and His will for my life.

Michael is candid, honest and funny. You will feel like you've known him all your life. He speaks to the reader as an equal and as a friend. There are some very poignant moments in the book concerning marriage and a miscarriage he and his wife suffered while on tour. The performing life is not always what people imagine, and Michael opens up a lot about when he surrendered to God's plan over the plans he had for his own life, marriage and family.

I was an early reader, thanks to #NetGalley and Waterbrook Multnomah. All opinions are my own.

I grew up listening to Tenth Avenue North and their songs have had a huge influence on me. God has used songs such as: Times, the Struggle, By Your Side, You are More, Oh My Dear, and Worn ... and spoken to my heart His love and a deeper understanding of who He is. God also used Mike Donehey’s teaching videos to impact my theology (especially “Beloved: The Last Supper). I’ve been following this band since, like, age 11. Suffice to say... Donehey and I go waaaaay back.

This book though...SO good! I’ve been deeply struggling with anxiety about the future, career, and “calling” for about a year and a half now. This book, especially the last chapter, was just what I needed to come back to the truth. I can’t sum it up for you in a few words, so I’ll just say... if you have ever obsessed or been anxious about the future or your calling—I highly recommend reading this book. God used Donehey to help give me a perspective I needed to stop losing sleep about the future and live in the joy of today.

One of my friends had praised this book so highly and recommended it to me several times that I finally bought it. I really enjoyed his writing style. His book read a lot like Bob Goff's "Love Does" in that each chapter is more of a story with a few truths packed in there. He made some excellent points about things that are not actually found in scripture (like leadership) that we often cling to because it makes us feel good about ourselves. I would recommend it for this chapter alone! He gave me some things I'm still chewing on! He shares his story and ideas very conversationally too. I felt like I was sitting in a cafe with him.

A beautifully simple book, full of refreshing and weighty truths. It is a book of theology but of the best kind - a theology of story. It is the truths of scripture tested by living and dying, faith and fear, choosing and being Chosen, doing and being, loving and being loved. There are soul-wrenching words, that promise soul-flourishing rest. It slashes holes in our parachutes of small hopes, to replace with faith-full wings to soar. It is both hard and easy to read. Ultimately, Mike points us to the author and perfecter of our faith and to a bright, joyous future in the freedom found in being one beloved of Jesus. “The ending is secure, so get out there and see what happens.”

A life-affirming, uplifting, heart-touching, must read!

I have to start with an introduction as to why I picked up this book in the first place. Being a fan of Tenth Avenue North, it felt natural for me to read a book by the lead singer Mike Donehey. The title hooked me, and I wanted to learn more about the author's take on how to find God's life for his will. It made me hopeful that I'd gain insight and possibly my own philosophy concerning what he had to share. However, this wasn't the only reason I picked up his book.

When I was in my early twenties, life began to feel fragile and even more confusing. I wasn't sure where my place in the world was or how I was supposed to feel or act or be. Although working my way through college, it was hard to find a balance between working fulltime, taking a full-time load of classes, and dealing with the usual fears and foibles of life. So, it became a very delicate place to inhabit, and my unhappiness with myself and the world became a predominant spectur hovering over me at all hours.

It was during this difficult time that I heard "By Your Side" on the radio. At this point, I was looking for anything to help me see a clear path or just to hold on until my world felt a little more stable. For this, I already had Chris Tomlin, Michael W. Smith's Worship CDs, and a few other songs keeping me holding on, and I was about to add Tenth Avenue North to my lifeline list.

Once I heard this song, it became a very important part of my life. The lyrics meant so much to me and felt like a reflection of what I was feeling inside. It became a mantra to me. I bought their CD and listened to it over and over again. I enjoyed their whole album and found other uplifting songs, but "By Your Side" became my anthem, and it kept me going. It fed life back into me and showed me I just needed to keep holding onto Jesus and His Word.

For this, Tenth Avenue North became a part of my saving grace. It motivated me to keep going, and it reminded me of how Jesus was always by my side. For this reason and more, I felt an immense sense of hope and relief. From this day forward, Tenth Avenue North became a band I loved and appreciated. They were one of a few artists whose CDs I would continue to buy and whose music I would listen to on repeat - until the day I die.

So, you can imagine my excitement when I heard they were going to come to KCMO in 2015 with Chris Tomlin. Two of my favorite Christian music artists in one place? Sign me up! I bought tickets so fast. It was one of the best concerts of my life. Not only did I hear my favorite songs, feel uplifted, and hear a new band I didn't know - Rend Collective, but I had the most amazing experience of my life.

While singing out their hit song "By Your Side" and giving it all I had despite my off-key voice, lead singer Mike Donehey jumped off the stage and ran up to the second level of the theater where I stood. He was singing, grabbing hands, and moving along the stairs and walkway until he came to my seat. He stopped, balanced on the railing, and held onto my hand. He sang to me and leaned forward to serenade my friend. He spent several minutes singing to us and holding my hand, and it was unbelievable. This was a once in a lifetime experience, and it felt as if God was using Mike Donehey to remind me that He's always there, always watching, and always by my side. Again, I was in another place of need, and God used this band and this song and this man to remind me of His presence once more.

I can't begin to describe to you the emotions and magnitude of this moment. I can't explain how much it meant to me or what a wild experience it was. I can't even begin to tell you how incredible it felt to hold onto the hand of someone who had made a difference in my life and didn't even know it. Because Tenth Avenue North did make a difference in my life. God used them to remind me of His presence with their songs. They've been doing it ever since I first heard them on the radio to that concert to this day. Needless to say, "By Your Side" is still my favorite song of theirs, but I've come to love so many of their songs because of the meaning behind them and how they connect to me. Their lyrics are so real and honest, I can feel them to the depths of my soul.

This is an introduction to an uplifting and relatable book by Author Mike Donehey. My experiences with his music and podcasts led me to Finding God's Life for my Will, and I'm glad it did. This was a book which showed me how Mike's life shaped who he is today. His experiences and testimonies were positive and life-affirming to hear. You never know anyone else's struggles until they share them, and then you see how God worked in their lives and what a difference it made. That's the case with this novel.

Each chapter brings its own fount of information. To try and summarize the content in a few brief paragraphs is unimaginable. I don't think I can do it. All I can do is pull several different key phrases and meanings from the book out, shine a light upon them, and then encourage you to read it. I want you to read it and find your own understanding and hope within its pages. However, believe me when I say, it might not be exactly what you expect.

The first sentence that drew my attention came from the introduction. It states on page 4, "His life for my will, and yous, is a never-ending process of submission." Yet again, I find a reminder to myself that I'm not in control. I can think I am and hope I am and pretend I am, but in the end, God's in charge. He's got my back. So, this is another reiteration of my need to give up my ego, pride, and control. My surrender will give Him glory, and in return, He'll help me through my time here on Earth.

Throughout this book, Author Mike Donehey shares his testimonies of his life. In the beginning, he gives us a personal look at what happened before his marriage, a life-altering accident, and the building of his career as a singer and songwriter with Tenth Avenue North. These testimonies share how his relationship with the Lord has grown and developed over time, and how it's a complete process on a daily basis because the world keeps creeping in, and he has to return to that place of surrender.

With a testimony regarding his wife, then girlfriend, he shares how he felt the Lord speaking to his heart and using the words He'd spoken so long ago to encourage Mike: "I'll never leave you nor forsake you" (Hebrews 13:5), and "I work all things together for those who love Me and have been called according to My purpose" (Romans 8:28). It was in the midst of these reminders and his struggle that Mike thought, "Perhaps God isn't giving me the plan because He wants to be the plan" (pg 9).

Again, these reminders and epiphanies are good for me to hear. Too often I want everything my own way, and repeatedly, I find out life just doesn't work out that way. This is okay.

Another lesson I've learned from this book is that "doing less" and "loving more" are two of the greatest things we can do with our time. Sometimes, if you're like me, I feel I've accomplished so much when my calendar is jam-packed, and I fall into bed exhausted each night. Yet, the best feelings of achievement come when I spend time with others, listening to them or helping them.

In fact, in the ninth chapter of his book, the author points out the Sabbath. He asks us to "consider" it and follows up this request by sharing the point of view of many scholars over this holy day. Many of those scholars believe that "God established the Sabbath to remind humanity that He doesn't love us because of our productivity" (pg 121). Jesus isn't wrapped up in what we do with our life or the money we make or the "culture that idolizes the ability to make a profit" (pg 121). He simply wants us to "concern ourselves with our motivations and methods" (pg 121) and remember that he wants to "purify our potential" (pg 121).

It's hard to stop sharing what I've gleaned from this book and how invigorated it made me feel inside, but I can give a few more important pieces I've pulled from this reading.

1. "Keep asking and keep resting" (pg 135) - "Pray continually" (1 Thessalonians 5:17-18)
2. "Gratitude readies us for heartbreak" (pg 156) -- "Being joyful in all things doesn't mean there is an absence of sorrow" (pg 156), but "gratitude is a shield protecting our hearts from bitterness" (pg 157).
3. "Keep saying yes" (pg 167) and try to figure out who you're "trying to serve" (pg 169).
4. "Embrace your cracks" (pg 187) and ask for forgiveness, confess your sins, and be merciful to those seeking your understanding. Don't add to their shame.
5. "He wants you to walk with Him" (pg 224).

Also, you have to read the story he includes about the woman named Joy on one of his flights. It's a beautiful message, and it sheds light on our ability to observe and demonstrate our gratitude. The depth and care shared within each of these chapters is momentous, and it brings the reader a chance to pause and reflect. It serves as an opportunity to see your life from a new perspective, and it gives you the chance to see how valuable and loved by God you really are.

Although I wish I could share so much more with you, I want to encourage you to read this book yourself and allow its lessons to immerse your soul and give you hope and peace. We can all use a pick-me-up from time to time, and I feel this book delivers a positive theme from beginning to end. It's one of my favorite books from 2021 so far, and I can't say enough how thought-provoking and refreshing it is.

That's why it definitely ranks as a "must read" for me and rates a full 5/5! I'm excited to see what else Author Mike Donehey shares in the future, and I hope to hear more of his music, podcasts, and life experiences along the way. Hopefully, you enjoy his book as much as I did, and I hope you'll comment on what you learned from it.

I'm going to buy this book and read it. Hopefully (but not realistically) soon.
Until then, I give it a heart recommendation. The title is, in my opinion, awful and very misleading. This book isn't about using God to get what you want out of life. it's about humbling yourself so that you can live in God's presence, whether you're getting what you want out of this life under the sun or not.
Also, I just found it thoroughly entertaining.

This book had some really great perspectives and new ways to think about what “calling” and “purpose” mean when lived out in faith. There are definitely more than a few chapters I’ll want to re-read to think through more deeply.

This was such an encouraging book. This is one of my favorite books I've read all year because it encourages living every day with God instead of finding some mythical big thing you are supposed to do for God. The chapter on leadership was especially good.
This is a really good read, I would definitely reccomend it to anyone. But I think it would be really good for graduates.

Mike Donehey has a way with words. If his songs aren't enough to convince of that, this book will! In a personable and relatable way, Mike shares so many pieces of his story that encourage readers to stop chasing after answers and start chasing after the heart of God. The road is not always easy, and Mike's shared experiences bear witness to that time and time again. Still, I was left with such a sense of peace after reading this book. It's okay to not have it all figured out. It's okay to have questions and to have doubts. It's okay to struggle. The love of God is bigger than anything the world can throw at us, and Mike does an excellent job reminding readers that the best thing we can do is to love God and to share that love with others.

I recieved an advanced copy of this book from Waterbrook and Multnomah.
Easy to read, but hard to swallow! As I read this book, was confronted repeatedly with my own selfish need for control. I tried to only read small sections at a time so that I could mull over them.
One of my favorite quotes from the book:
"...privacy is like oxygen for shame. When we open up the doors on the very worst things we've done, it's as if we're cutting off their air supply."
I found such freedom in this statement as I reflected on the past few years of my life!
Mike is a great writer and includes plenty of fun stories for his band lovers.
This would make an excellent gift for anyone who enjoys the music of 10th Avenue North. It is a challenging and encouraging read for everyone!

I recently heard an interview on KLove with Mike Donehey about his new book. He talked about how people often ask what is God's will for my life. He pointed out that scripture is very clear about what God's will is for us. In Micah 6:8, for instance, we're told:

No, O people, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8 NLT

If we're reading the Bible, God's will is pretty clear but Donehey pointed out that the question we could be asking is what is God's life for my will.

One of the questions that Donehey has been asked several times is "When did you get your calling to be a musician? How did you know?" His answer to this question is really the basis for his book. I would love to share all of the different highlights and notes that I made but it would be practically the whole book.

Here are my thoughts on why you should read this. So much of our culture tells us that we need to identify our calling, passion, whatever you want to call it and pursue it. And there's an underlying thought that if you don't pursue it then you aren't serving God with your life. Donehey points out over and over again that serving God isn't about finding a singular thing to do but finding a singular purpose of heart to glorify God. He states that he wasn't called to be a musician but he likes singing and so he sang to bring God glory. And personally, I think we could all use a little more of that in our lives. A move away from defining ourselves by what we do and towards defining ourselves by whom we serve.

If you're feeling a little lost in regards to what you should be doing with your life, if you know a young person that could use a little encouragement in finding their way in regards to career, if you love being reminded that God is more interested in our hearts than our titles, this is the book for you.

I received a free copy of this book through NetGalley for the purpose of review. I'm never required to say positive things but I'm always thankful when I can.

I heard Mike Donehey of Tenth Avenue North recently on Annie F. Downs's podcast and ordered his new book before the podcast episode was over. He said things about leaders and followers that intrigued me and encouraged me to follow Jesus more closely.

In “Finding God’s Life for My Will,” I marked catchy lines and thought-provoking paragraphs and rhetorical questions I need to keep asking myself. I texted a friend a few pictures of pages from the chapter about sorrow & joy and I read aloud to my husband funny and meaningful stories. I’m going to recommend the book to multiple friends with whom I have ongoing conversations on faith.

(Obviously, I’m recommending this book to y’all too.)

“Let’s release our stranglehold on our lives and our wills and all the ways we’ve dreamed of seeing our lives going. Let’s give up on finding some secret will for our lives. In fact, let’s let our lives go. Surrender. Keep surrendering. Let His life come rushing in. Let us swallow up all our ideas and all our dreams and all our grand plans for success. Keep our hands open to change and our hearts open to heavenly invasion. In the end, it’s not our story, anyway. It’s His.”

I haven’t read many non-fiction books this year and am generally selective about which ones I read. This world is so noisy and bossy. But in this book, Mike Donehey shares stories that are gentle, funny, and true. He quotes scripture and reminds readers of what Jesus did for us, what we should do about it, and how life is not nearly as complicated as we make it sometimes.

“This is the ever-unfolding journey of finding God’s life for my will. Yes, you read that right. I didn’t say His will for my life. He’s made that perfectly clear:
• His will for my life is joy.
• His will for my life is rest.
• His will for my life is forgiveness, gratitude, and purity of heart.
No. I’m after something different.”

And with these words, I could already tell Mike Donehey was going to do something a little different from the ordinary. In a book that is best described as a mash-up of Christian Living and Band Memoir, he unleashes truth after truth with brutal honesty and introspection with plenty of doses of humor and raw emotion. I found myself highlighting passage after passage each chapter. He teaches how to be a disciple, a servant, and a follower of Jesus (I finally get why they named their album “Followers”). He also teaches a lot about not doing things for our ego, glory, or praise; this is important not just to lead singers on stage every night, but for us as well. My only disappointment was the mention of praying the prayer to be saved without any mention of baptism. Other than that, this is a recommended read.

March 19, 2015- I didn’t want to go, I was in the worst of moods. But because I love the band that was headlining that night, I mustered up the strength to go, and thank goodness I did! Somehow, I had missed knowing about Tenth Avenue North before then. I sat there in awe - who is this band, who is this guy with all this crazy energy running into the audience, what are these amazing songs? I need more!! I’ve been following them since (and may have seen them several more times since then 😉)- needless to say I was stoked when Mike Donehey, the lead singer mentioned he was writing a book.

Mike’s book is a mixture of personal life stories and Biblical life applications. The book is written in a conversational tone- it’s funny, serious, hopeful, insightful, encouraging and easy to relate to. It’s full of truth and wisdom. I appreciate Mike’s openness, honesty and vulnerability. I laughed, I cried- and will again as this is a book I plan to read many times. Mike encourages all of us to quit asking God what His will is for our lives- rather seek to live in God’s presence every day.

Thank you to Netgalley, Waterbrook and Multnomah Publishers and Mike Donehey for an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review.

***I received an advanced copy (e-book) of this book through NetGalley, courtesy of Waterbrook and Multnomah.***

I have been a big fan of Tenth Avenue North for years, and I love Mike Donehey’s down-to-earth presence on Instagram. (I’ve also been to a concert, which was wonderful!) I was excited to hear that Mike was writing a book, and it did not disappoint!

Finding God’s Life for My Will reads like a series of essays. Each chapter is about a different time in Mike’s personal or professional life. The overarching theme is surrendering your will to God to allow Him to live His plans and purposes through you.

I highlighted so many parts of this book! It is one I will read again and again. There is a lot of wisdom in the midst of Mike’s humor and stories of failures and successes. I also enjoyed the sneak peek at life behind the scenes of Tenth Avenue North. I highly recommend this book.

Tenth Avenue North is a favorite band of mine, so when I heard that the lead singer, Mike Donehey, wrote a book I knew I had to read it. I really liked reading his story and found the writing style to be easy to read and humorous at times.

While I didn't agree with everything Mike Donehey said, I did enjoy the book overall and am glad I read it.

This much-awaited book from Mike from my favorite band doesn’t disappoint! He really gets to the nitty-gritty of our hearts, just like Christ did when He taught! It’s biblically sound, fun to read, and gives you tons and tons to chew on. I’m still processing some of the things he said and I finished it two weeks ago! It’s well worth the read...get extra copies because you will want to share with everybody you know! If you are a fan of the band, you can hear the theme of their music all through the book. Highly recommended for mature believers and those just starting to explore Christianity!

Mike Donehey is as down-to-earth as they come. His book feels like a long conversation between friends, with him sharing his heart, thoughts, anecdotes, and experiences. He will challenge your way of thinking and how you view discovering "God's will" for your life. It's a perfect blend of funny and thought-provoking. Donehey is deep, but understandable. You will walk away glad you took the time to read this book!

Thoroughly loved this book! Easy to read, engaging and challenging. Mike writes in a way that is both vulnerable and funny at the same time. I finished this book in 3 days and came out the other side more in love with Jesus and in awe of His goodness than I was going into it. HIGHLY recommend this book!!

Mike does a great job of making you feel like you’re sitting with him at the dinner table while reading his words. This book is well written and made me laugh, cry, and everything in between. If you’re thinking of buying this book, just do it! You won’t be disappointed!!

This was a really heartfelt and thoughtful book. I was really challenged and feel like I’ll grow because of it. I loved Mike’s candor and the humor in here. The chapter on leadership was really refreshing too.

What if the weight of the world wasn't on your shoulders? What if the success of your ministry didn't rely on you? What if you didn't have to lead? Sounds crazy, right? Sacrilegious? But here's the point Mine Donehey wants to make: All those responsibilities don't really rest on your shoulders anyway. They are God's job, and far too often we've yanked control from Him.

What does the Bible call us to do and be? Be fishers of men and make disciples. Seek God. Love others. Meditate on Scripture and pass it on to our children. I'm sure you can add to that list, but where does the Bible call us to be 'leaders'? Does it call us to help create and run big, successful ministries? Or does it tell us to love God, seek His kingdom, and allow God to take care of the rest?

Many of you need to understand that the author is not advocating laziness. And some of you need to stop the arguments running through your head and think for a moment. One of the big points of Mr. Donehey's book is this: Obedience and trust. Faithfully do what God tells you to do then release all other aspects to Him. He will determine the future.

As an author, I feel the weight of doing my part to make sure my books are successful. Weekly blog posts, activity on social media, and more are designed to interact with readers and spread the word about what God's given me to share. Shouldn't I tell the world about the message He's given me? Or, do I merely put the book out there and trust that He'll take over from there? Finding where that line is between what I'm pressured to do within my career (what I'm told I must do if I want to be 'successful') and what God has actually told me to do is difficult on good days.

But I look back and see the same difficulty bleed over into when I led within ministry. When I was on staff at a church. When my kids were small and I wanted to be a good mother. Now, as I seek to be the wife and mother and grandmother and friend God has called me to be. It's so much, and many days I feel like I'm constantly failing.

But that returns me to my original questions. What if I'm doing too much or the wrong things? And what if the real problem is that my focus is off?

Mike Donehey's book is simple but thought-provoking. He doesn't claim to have all the answers but invites you to journey with him through discovering pieces of the answers. It's a breath of fresh air in the plethora of books available on leadership and growing in God as we are reminded again and again that God is not after our achievements. He's after our heart.

I enjoyed reading quickly through the book the first time. It was like visiting with a friend. It is an easy read. Then I reread it and focused on several parts that strongly resonated in my life.

My daughter is a senior in high school now. Since she was twelve, she has been hearing she needs to decide her major for high school, think about what college she is going to, and choose a career.

Asking a twelve year old to make five and ten year plans is ridiculous but it is happening. The pressure on kids to plan out their future is immense. Being a public school, God's will is not considered at all.

I found this book reassuring to me as a mom that I am right to let my daughter not decide her life by age 18. I think back to my own life and how differently I imagined it would be. I also remember being paralyzed about decisions because I was not sure I "felt" God telling me to do something.

Other times, I let others' expectations and requests decide how I served. I agreed to serve in a ministry for six months that I had no desire to be a part of. It was not of God for me to be there and there was no fruit. I had no peace so I should have kept saying no. I gave in to the pressure of a friend trying to get people to help him start a ministry.

I remember a woman who was a singer not showing up several times because she knew I would lead worship. I have zero musical talent so I joked "Hey, prison is a place where the punishment is supposed to deter you from breaking the law again. My singing is like torture. If you want to hear real music, stay out of here and avoid the pain." Had I not been there, she would have been more likely to honor her commitment and calling.

The ministry would have gone on without me. God did not need me to be there, miserable and counting down the six months. At other times, I loved serving but had to quit to take care of family. I miss teaching kids and when no one stepped up to take over the class, I allowed myself to feel guilt and fear over it. Eventually someone stepped in and did a wonderful job.

This book illustrates how God can use us in ways we never imagined and that we don't have to have our entire futures planned out. Also, about how each of us has talents, experiences, hurts, and a unique voice to reach people. I feel very inspired and also very much at peace after reading this book. I will always be a fan of Tenth Avenue North and their music but I am now a fan of Mike as an author.
