There's no peace for this recently resurrected valkyrie. Asgard's greatest enemy intends to claim both the realm of the gods and the realm of humans for himself, and with the army he's amassed, the odds aren't on our side.
Even worse? It turns out the gods aren't so immortal after all. If this power-hungry giant gets his way, my four new lovers will lose not just their home but their lives as well.
As we gather more gods to join the fight, old tensions flare up. I'm starting to think there isn't strength in numbers, only a whole lot of arguing. How can I help save the realms when the divine newcomers see me as nothing more than a servant of Valhalla?
In this final battle, we either win or lose everything. But I'm Aria Watson, and I'll die all over again before I let a giant destroy both my worlds.
*Their Dark Valkyrie is a medium-burn reverse harem urban fantasy series. This action-packed, heart-wrenching ride gives you a kickass heroine, four irresistible gods, and Norse mythology like you've never seen it before. Series now complete!*
Eva Chase lives in Canada with her family. She loves stories both swoony and supernatural, and strong women and the men who appreciate them. You can visit her online at www.evachase.com.
Though thanks for that wrap up in a pretty bow. NOT
Seriously what the fuck was that?
I am still mad at the fact there is barely a "medium-burn" in the sex department. ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
Well what can I say, this was okay. The gods annoy me to no end. They seem like immature self centered idiots most of the time. Loki was my favorite but even he had his moments. I can't see how those giants could do so much considering they were fighting the strongest beings of all time. Don't even get me started on Odin.
I finally had time to finish Eva Chase's Norse Mythology inspired reverse harem series, about Aria and her Norse gods. Right now I'm sad that it's over. I could easily spend a lot more time in Eva's world, mixed with Norse Mythology and modern day human life.
The final book picks up right where the previous one left us, when Aria and her divine lovers are ready to spend a day relaxing in the sun, only to be attacked by a fire giant. Way to go from bad to worse! Things gets even worse for Aria, the Valkyrie, when Surt seems to focus all his attacks on her, and there's not a darn thing she can do about it. She might have the attitude and will to keep going, but when even Asgard's most blood thirsty warrior tells her it's time to leave, she has to heed his advise. Almost all the gods make it safely from Asgard to Midgard, but the cost is high. Not only have they lost their realm, they've also learned that when the gods die a second time around they don't get resurrected, like they did after Ragnarok.
Aria shows a surprising level of strength, love, fierceness and cunning in this book - and it becomes clearer to see that she truly is a patchwork of the four gods. With that being said she's still staying true to what makes her who she is, while continuing to grow and and learn. Though Aria has never been a pushover she is facing a lot of negativity, when the Asgardians go looking for other gods who got resurrected after Ragnarok. The remaining gods doesn't have a shred of respect or patience for a Valkyrie, who thinks she should be talking tactic or taking charge. The constant belittling reawakens her own doubts about her abilities and worth. Like that's not enough, it looks like the mighty fire giant is planning to kill all humans and take over Midgard, which would include her little brother, for whom she would anything to keep safe.
I absolutely love how Eva handles Aria's insecurities! Yes she has her weak moments, but they never take over for too long. And there's no "oh no I can't handle this, please tell me I'm strong and beautiful" moments. She keeps bouncing back to being the sassy, cunning woman she is. The plot has a good pack - not too quick to skim over details, but not slow enough to get boring. In war there are no easy solutions. The final battle is very much the definition of "no pain, no gain" and I love how hard they all have to work together. Gods, humans and one hybrid alike.
As a Dane I always find it hard to read books where authors put their spin on Norse Mythology. After all, these are the myths and stories I grew up with, and that made me fall in love with reading. However, Eva Chase stays true to the myths for the most part. It doesn't actually feel like she changes anything, it feels more like she improves and adapts the myths to the modern world. And that in itself is amazing!!
I really flew through this book and I’m glad the Gods were able to reclaim their home and take out the baddie. I did expect a bit more of an explosive end which I know is kind of ironic given they are literally dealing with nukes and such but 🤷🏼♀️ I did have a mini heart attack when lives come close to being lost. Authors can be so mean lol I was hoping there would be more work with the dark elves but the more I think about it, they’ve sort of suffered enough they really should be helped and left alone lol. I got a little teary eyed at the end and I’m so glad they came up with a way for Aria to be a part of her brother’s life without derailing his. I’m even more glad Odin finally manned up and cleared Loki’s image and took blame for his role in his tarnished reputation. Seeing Loki be truly accepted was really sweet. The series overall was ok, I wish there was more threats than just one guy and his minions throughout but I get why the author chose this multi book storyline.
I thought book 3 was bad but this one, hate to say it but it's a one star.
Yeah. We get it. In your world building, Odin is a dick. A big jerky jerk. But did you need to write an entire book about it?
And the worst thing is that book three and four of this series just feel like wheat bran. Just filler on filler on filler.
I had no idea that someone could make battles and war so incredibly boring. Now it could have much to do with the female narrator. Speaking so fast I kept checking to see if I had it in fast forward. Sadly no. But on the flip side that's actually a good thing or I would never have completed the book Because again, really boring.
What's also boring is being heavy-handed and condescending about specific moral themes and then totally counteracting them when it suits you.
So basically: all these guys are great because they're from the great place and they look down on everybody. But they learn their lesson and realize that they have to take care of others for everyone to thrive. Yay team.
And yet it gets near the end of the book and they are still calling an entire race by derogatory names. They are still defending Odin up until the end until Miss superpower gives him the what's what.
But by then, it's just rehash. It feels like movie remakes and serials where there's no content because there's no freaking story! Then you add to it of course, zombies, zombie apocalypse, apocalypse and dream team.
Is it familiar feeling because a lot of this feels like it was pulled right out of the Marvel universe movies? If not the comic books? Probably. But all in all there's just so many places where this book could have been better.
The only thing that kept me reading was the promise of the relationship with Hode . Because of the four characters his is really the only one where we are seeing some movement and development. Loki is interesting and fascinating because of who the character is but I don't know about all these missed opportunities with Boulder and sore. Both who come off as so one-dimensional. Poor Thor decides that he wants to be more than just the thunder God that he actually has depth and feeling, and then nothing happens with it.
Balder was the ultimate missed opportunity of all the books because here is a chance to talk about how the darkness needs the light and vice versa. To watch how he goes through trauma and comes out the other side. To explore those themes of duality and dark and light. Not only with the twins but of the entire series and the parallel to other characters. And yet...nooe. just introducing you to it but then no follow through. Kind of like the sex scenes just meh.
Speaking of. In addition to incredibly boring let's all go to war stuff were some poorly bad written sex scenes. Again bran flakes.
Like maybe somebody editing this book said yeah you better throw in some sex scenes to add a little bit of spice and keep the readers interested but nope 🥱 Could have been so much more exciting! Unfortunately just really blah.
I'm really hoping that if I read Eva Chase in the future that those books will be better than this series.
More Gods are found to assist the group in fighting their enemies as the evil giant takes control of Asgard Odin eventually confesses to his mistakes and his role in Loki's past actions I don't quite get the role of men here, I wanted them to save the day because the gods were so ungrateful and cocky I loved the h's moment with her brother,I actually teared up at that All in all this series didn't deliver as I hoped but it was okish
In the conclusion, the power-hungry giants are set on destroying not only Asgard, but Earth as well. There's a lot of hunting for other Gods to help with the fight. I'm not really into travel stories, so this board the heck out of me. The guys go missing, Odin is still trying to take control and failing. There's a lot going on and that's the only thing that really got me through this last book.
Another series ended. A lot lighter than the previous books with no trigger warnings in this one. A little disappointing character wise given than the relationship felt scattered with the exception of Loki and Ari pretty much got sidelined. Of course favourite was Loki, a much stronger character compared to the rest and felt more fleshed out. Thor is pretty much ruined for me thanks to the marvel movies I can’t see him as anyone else. Overall a decent series dealing with dark themes and broken family.
On another note nice touch with the sneak peak of the next series. I am very much curious about Moriarty being a chick and outwitting Sherlock Holmes. Definitely on my to read list.
This was a satisfactory conclusion. It could have been more epic, but I accept it. I literally read this series as a light, guilty-pleasure series and funnily enough I got somewhat more than that. I really liked the protagonist and the gods (excluding Odin) and I didn't think I would be invested but I was. At the same time I managed my expectations considering how short each book is (I started and finished this book this morning XD).
Yeah, so I'd say this series was decent but didn't wow me. Additionally, this was my very first reverse-harem book series I've ever read and I found this element of the story interesting. I do wish there was more time to further develop the relationships, but I don't really have any of reverse-harem work to compare it to as of now.
I am looking forward to reading more books by Eva Chase in the future as I found this series entertaining.
I think I was expecting something more epic for the conclusion of the series. Was still a decent wrap up I think. Looking back and seeing how far they had come in such a short time got me all up in my feels.
FMC Aria still her no nonsense holding it down self, however, in this book she seems a little lost as all the gods come together she can't really seem to find her place. Recruiting the humans... freaking genius really no one ever goes down and makes them fight for themselves lol.
Super fast paced, blink and you miss stuff, enjoyable read.
Really great ending. They all had so much to fight for, couple moments brought me to tears but it was all worth it in the end. Thank you Eva Chase it was a wonderful journey
This is the last installment in this series and by far was the best one. This story had a lot more action as the result of the war taking place in this story. This one is also the one with the most romance in it. I personally would love to read more stories that are similar to this one. This story most definitely one that I would read again if I ever get caught up or need something to get me into the mood to get back into reading.
Sorry to see this series end but the gang has earned their rest. The casual sex was not my favorite but the characters grew emotionally and seem to have forged a bond I can believe in at the end.
After Surt reappears on Asgard, and our heroes face a difficult battle, it seems like it's time for their hope to be lost. When the world of the gods falls, it becomes clear that nowhere else will be safe, and Aria is pushed to the limits of her strength and cunning to try and figure out how she and her gods can make the human world safe.
I think Aria's character shows a lot of strength in Waking the Gods. She's never been a pushover at any point in the series, but she's facing a lot of negativity: her own doubts about her abilities and worth, the returning gods' questioning her presence and right to contribute, and fear for the lives of the gods she's coming to love. One of the things I like most is how Chase handles this; she lets Aria have her moments of doubt and weakness, but she never lets them warp who she is. The kind-hearted, sassy, cunning woman remains the same. She doesn't become lesser or sink to a level of pettiness or b*tchiness because it seems liked the world is working against her. She rises to the level of her challenges and finds a way to work within or overcome them.
Thor, Loki, Baldur, and Hod are still as enchanting as ever. Their development is a dynamic part of the story, and Chase makes such good use of the material that she's built into past books. Baldur's struggles against his darkness aren't just a "standalone" issue; his battle with owning and accepting his own power resonates in WTG as well. The lessons Thor learns about his own self-worth and how to show he can contribute in ways beyond what's always expected of him lead him to a greater understanding of some of the choices Aria makes. Revelations about Loki slowly begin to chip away at the icy darkness that keeps a wall between him and Hod. Their development makes them each better-rounded as characters, but it also strengthens the chemistry that they have as a family.
While the gods' family chemistry is growing stronger, the romantic/physical chemistry is also very well done in WTG. Aria has some steamy fun with each of her gods, sometimes as a team effort :P There's something for everyone, so no fan will walk away sad that their favored god didn't get some love and appreciation.
The plot of WTG is well-paced, and just when you wonder how she'll manage to turn the war around, a curve ball gets thrown at the perfect time. There are some creative solutions that provide momentum in the gods' battle against Surt, and I always welcome an unexpected surprise!
No stone is left unturned or unresolved, and I like that we're not left with any little loopholes or plot-holes. Although I wasn't expecting the way things turn out with Petey, Chase writes a beautiful wrap-up that fits Aria and her goals so perfectly that I can't be upset about it. Overall, the ending gives us what we NEED, what makes sense for the characters, and that's the best that I could hope for.
Waking the Gods is the fourth and final book in the Their Dark Valkyrie series and it was amazing. Eva has done a fantastic job on this series and Waking the Gods was just the topper.
Aria and her gods are in for the fight of their lives, the frost giant Surt has deadly plans for two of the nine realms and has gathered an impossible army. My group can't fight this war alone it's time to call upon the only gods to survive Ragnarok but what will the gods do when they find out they aren't so immortal after all. It's gonna be one helluva fight and Aria and her gods are going have to stick together and work with the a few new allies if they ever hope to win this fight.
I loved Waking the Gods so much Eva did a wonderful job with the plot and of course the characters. I love the bond Aria has with her gods and her relationship with each is unique but doesn't take away from the others. They can depend on each other, hold each other up and are emotional linked, even the relationship between all the guys are improving. And while other gods to appear and the dynamic changes in the bigger group their bond still holds strong when all are together.
It was a little weird to see the other gods bias towards Aria, to them she couldn't contribute to anything they were doing and they were really looking down upon her. The other gods look down upon her because she is a Valkyrie and not a god. I love the fact that her guys and even Freya don't let the new gods discount Aria and Aria to her credit takes the high road.
I could have had more mythology in the book and maybe an explanation of the other realms but other than that the story was fantastic. This is a reverse harem series so the steamy romance was incredible real, the bond between Aria and her gods became a whole lot deeper, Aria had to also overcome some prejudices and stand-up for herself in her new world. The action was so good and intense, I was on the edge of my seat wondering what could happen next and how it all was going to end.
Waking the Gods was the perfect ending to the series, I loved every minute of it. This is my second reverse harem by Eva and while I loved the Witch's Consorts series and loved the Their Dark Valkyrie series so much more, I felt really connected to the characters and I loved the world so much. I am so looking forward to reading more from Eva reverse harem and non-reverse harem. I will be reading her dragon reverse harem series and I am excited for it.
I have a hate-love relationship with series finales. It's hard to explain what happens, but whenever I reach the last book of a series something funny happens in my brain. I terribly want to read the last book and I somehow manage to put if off as long as possible too. However, I have the collectors edition of this series and I also really wanted to finally move it from my to be read bookcase to the Eva Chase shelf. It was exactly the right kind of motivation to finish this!
The finale is everything I had hoped it would be and I really enjoyed how Chase managed to really create the impression that this fight is hard. Incredibly hard. When you write a book about Gods it's easy to create those all powerful beings who win every fight by only blinking and swinging their hammer. Chase never did that. In this book she didn't only raise the stakes, but she also made sure that the enemy was just as powerful.
Chase also makes sure that we never get an overload of one or the other. There are a lot of action scenes in this book, but they seem evenly spread and in between all the action our characters have time for some emotional moments. And since the enemy turns out to be quite powerful, there is also a lot of planning involved. Because of the banter and small fights, especially since also Gods outside the original group get involved, it's quite entertaining though!
I also loved how Chase made sure that all books, all the storylines, everything we've learned and most of all everything the characters learned comes back in this book. She connects everything and the last chapter of the book is a really satisfying one. The debts that were still open were paid. Connections that were severed were repaired and the people who deserve praise and recognition get it. It seems that even all powerful Gods can learn and grow!
If you have the chance: Get the box-set! The 50 page bonus epilogue is totally worth it! Cute, sweet, fitting and entertaining!
This was probably the best of the four books in my opinion. I felt like this had the most action of all of them. I thought the inclusion of the other gods and goddesses was smart even if we weren't told exactly what they were the gods and goddesses of. I also enjoyed the inclusion of Aria's former "colleagues". I wasn't expecting a lot of what preceded the huge fight but it most certainly made the ending that much more satisfying. Partway through, I thought Muninn might be a traitor again but was pleased that she stayed on the good side. I felt bad for Aria in parts of this book because of how some of the other gods and goddesses treated her but Im glad she wasn't written as a character who brooded over that. If you have Audible, I highly recommend listening to the epilogue. It made me very happy what happened in that extra chapter. I certainly didn't expect that ending. I found it to be incredibly sweet. All in all, I'd recommend these books to anyone who is interested in books about Norse mythology and/or books that have a badass main female character. Would I reread these books, probably not just because I now already know how they end and what happens so it wouldn't be as exhilarating in my opinion. The Audible version was also almost 30 hours so that's quite a chunk of time. My only complaint, as I've mentioned in other reviews, was the frequency and explicitness of the sex scenes. I don't mind sex scenes but it seemed, especially in the third and fourth book, that they were occurring nearly every chapter which made me a little uncomfortable. I also felt that the depictions of what was happening was a little much but that's personally just me. Ive read books with less explicit as well as more explicit sex scenes and I definitely prefer the former. I want to read more by Eva Chase. I think she's a very good author who writes in a way that makes you want to keep reading to find out what will happen next. Therefore onto the next!
Yeah that’s what I’m settling on when it comes to this series. It had SO MUCH promise in the beginning. All the pieces were there but I just don’t feel like it came together all that well.
The gods totally pissed me off in the last 2 books. All of them had ended up settling in various parts of Midgard for freaking centuries.... and they STILL all thought humans were useless, weak, and not worth their time. Like... how?! How did they stay in Midgard for all that time and develop exactly ZERO respect for the people of the realm they inhabited 🙄 I just... can’t begin to explain my hate for this entire plot point.
I appreciated the relationship development in the last 2 books more but I still wasn’t over the hills, totally heart skipping in love with any of the pairings. They just fell kind of flat for me.
Don’t even get me started on Odin’s bi-polar ass. He fell into line with little to no drama or arguments. That really just didn’t fly with me and felt totally unrealistic.
Final thoughts.... at no point in time in FOUR books did we ever get to have all four guys and our Valkyrie get to some spicy time together... I can’t express my sadness over this missed opportunity.
Overall it wasn’t a terrible read, but more than once in this final book I found myself reading it in order to finish the series more-so than finding myself dying to find out what would happen 🤷♀️
Aria Watson is a Valkyrie and when Surt appears in Asgard with a huge army determined to take over the realms of the Gods and the humans. Aria and her four Golds soon realise that they cannot possibly defeat him on their own and so the seek to find all of the other Gods who are scattered all over the place. When they are all gathered Ari has to struggle with both her own self doubt and the doubts of the other Gods with her abilities and the worth of any contribution she might make. Can they win the fight for their lives as well as their home in this win or lose all scenario?
I loved this story which is the last of the series. It was packed with action, drama, danger, emotion, and lots of character development. Ari definitely came into her own in this story and it also showed a really nice strengthening of the relationship between her and her four God lovers. It was great to see how much they obviously cared for each other and that it was a relationship and not just a physical thing, I loved the way the story finished and what was promised for the future - I just wish we had more stories on the way in the series in order to explore their relationships and skills more. Recommended.
This series was overall pretty underwhelming but this last book felt like it wrapped it up decently.
My main criticism of the series is the pacing - all of the action happens at the end and several parts feel like filler. This book feels like it does a better job for the most part.
•Characterization of the gods (main cast and other gods) - someone in another review said they felt the gods were depicted more cartoonish and immature, and at places I could see that. The gods did more arguing among themselves than problem solving and it got old.
•Relationship development - Ari’s relationships with the gods don’t feel like they progress much more than friends with benefits even though they supposedly have such a deep bond. We do see development between her and Hod, and something deeper feels like it could be in the works with Loki. But Thor and Baldur feel superficial despite her telling all of them that she loves them.
•The sexual scenes - felt lackluster and again made the gods feel like friends with benefits that make her feel good but not much else.
•I do like that she visits Petey again at the end and gains a larger role over Midgard.
Again, I think this book wrapped things up decently but I don’t think this is a series I would revisit.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This was a good series but looking back on it as a whole, I feel like something is missing. Maybe the characters needed more relationship development.... I'm not sure I can put my finger on what it was.
The following is a breakdown of how I typically rate books.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This rating I usually give to books that have an engaging plot with fully developed characters. I was able to emotionally connect with the feelings of the characters. This rating also conveys awesome editing! I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in reading it.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A book that I give four Stars typically has too many typos for me to feel it gets five stars. It may have some facts that don't line up with previous descriptions in the story.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ A three star rating is for books that have a fair amount of editing needs. I probably felt this book was an enjoyable read and found it entertaining. I wouldn't discourage anyone who is interested in reading it.
⭐️⭐️ This is a book that I wouldn't put a recommendation on, in fact I would pass and choose something I was more interested in reading.
⭐️ I can't remember ever rating a book one star. I feel an author had to have put too much of themselves into a book to ever deserve one star from me.
Final battle to reclaim Asgard and save Midgard from Surt, the main villain in this series. Having only seven of them against the army of the undead, getting help from the other gods is a must. But, it doesn't mean that things will run smoothly, especially when the newly joined gods look down on you and some of the original team members.
Odin's cryptic clues make sense in this final book. Baldur, Hod, and Loki prove themselves worthy, but nothing new from Thor, the gentle giant with muscles. Meanwhile, Aria never bows down to those who are skeptical of her Valkyrie's status, and she does us proud in the end with her initiative!
This book is action-packed with plenty of battle scenes, easy to read and imagine, and it comes with a very satisfying ending to the series. I'll definitely be reading the next series from the same world if it comes up! Maybe make Huginn, the other Odin's raven of memory, a minor villain. But, please make it longer this time. Possibly eight books or more 😆.
I have truly enjoyed this series, and book#4 is not different! Throughout, Aria has been learning her new abilities and the true strength and intelligence she has always possessed. Thor, Baldur, Loki, and Hod have been by her side, encouraging and loving their Valkyrie. But that doesn't lessen her feelings of inadequacy in the presence of all the new gods showing up to aid in their battle.
Being Aria, she finds a way and the umph within herself to overcome obstacles, and show her worth, all why putting her own swing on things. And the scene when she finally is able to use and control one of her special gifts to save her heart - I was alternating between crying my eyes out and yelling " You go, girl!".
Book#4 is a great conclusion to a wonderfully entertaining series
I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review
Amazing ending to an awesome series. I’ve loved every book I’ve read of Eva’s and this one is no different. The world and story she created from Viking mythology was creative and unique. The characters were all well developed and there didn’t appear to be any plot holes.
I think the thing I love most about this series is that the story doesn’t revolves around sex. Yea, there are a few scenes but they are relatively quick yet steamy. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good smutty read but it’s nice to read something where the story isn’t completely overshadowed by all the horny rabbit sex. The outcome of the storyline of our characters doesn’t solely rely on sex which seems to be a common concept within the RH world.
Once again, a fantastic series from an amazing author. I highly recommend this series!
