Serafina and Braeden make an epic return in the hotly anticipated fourth installment of Robert Beatty's #1 New York Times best-selling series.
Serafina, the Guardian of Biltmore Estate, has won battle after battle against the dark forces encroaching on her home. Now, tranquility has returned to Biltmore. Serafina doesn’t trust it. She patrols the grounds night and day, hardly sleeping, uncertain of her place after her best friend Braeden Vanderbilt's departure for boarding school in New York.
When Mr. Vanderbilt, the kind master of Biltmore, asks Serafina to move upstairs into one of the house's grandest rooms, she's sure it's to keep an eye on the guests who have arrived for the estate's annual hunt.
But as Serafina investigates, she becomes more and more unsettled by what Biltmore has become—a place haunted by nameless terrors where no dark corridor is safe. Even worse, she begins to doubt her own senses. Is Braeden really hundreds of miles away, or did he return to Biltmore for one strange night before vanishing? Is the bond between them truly broken or is it stronger than ever?
Then Serafina witnesses a crime that turns her world upside down. How can all that once seemed good and worthy of protection now be evil? And how can she guard those around her when she can't even be sure of the truth of her own heart?
Serafina and the Seven Stars marks the return of a heroine like no other, as master storyteller Robert Beatty weaves his darkest, most astonishing tale yet.
Robert Beatty is the #1 New York Times best-selling author of the Serafina Series, the Willa Series, and Sylvia Doe — all published by Disney-Hyperion. Loved by both young readers and adults alike, his books are being taught in over a thousand classrooms nationwide and have been translated into over twenty languages across the world. Over ONE MILLION of his books have been sold.
The award-winning Serafina Series is a spooky mystery-thriller about a brave and unusual cat-like girl who lives secretly in the basement of the grand Biltmore Estate, surrounded by the opulence of the Gilded Age and the rugged beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Serafina and the Black Cloak, the first book in the series, won the Southern Book Prize in 2016. All four books in the series became #1 New York Times bestsellers.
Mr. Beatty's second project was the #1 New York Times best-selling Willa of the Wood Series, the story of a young forest girl with ancient magical powers who struggles for survival and understanding in the Great Smoky Mountains. The Willa books are in the early stages of being developed into a live action television series by Lionsgate.
His latest book, Sylvia Doe and the 100-Year Flood, is the tale of a lonely 13-year-old girl and a powerful, magical storm that forever changes her life. The award-winning author Kwame Alexander called it, "Magical realism at its best." Both Kirkus and Publishers Weekly awarded Sylvia Doe with a prestigious STARRED REVIEW.
Robert Beatty lives in the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina with his wife and three daughters, who help create and refine his stories. He loves to explore the historic Biltmore Estate and the Blue Ridge Mountains where his novels take place. He writes full-time now, but in his past lives, Mr. Beatty was one of the early pioneers of cloud computing, the founder/CEO of Plex Systems, the co-founder of Beatty Robotics, and the chairman/CTO of Narrative Magazine. In 2007, he was named an Entrepreneur of the Year.
When asked about the inspiration for his writing, Robert said, “My books are inspired by my desire to write about heroic young girls for my three daughters."
I absolutely LOVED this series! I am so darn glad I decided to give it a try. :)
The plot was AMAZING. I found it very creative how Robert Beatty put in some Greek mythology, the constellations, and so much more into the story! Like sometimes when authors blend many stories together, it becomes a little weird. But Beatty makes it completely smooth and easy to understand! And the plot twists...AWESOME. He actually made me feel emotions...*mind blown*
The character development... *round of applause* BEAUTIFUL. In the story, Serafina starts out as a paranoid person, always thinking something is wrong. But at the end, she learns what it takes to be "The Guardian" and she builds more confidence. And the last page...was so touching!
Thank you very much for an awesome series, Robert Beatty. I think this has become one of my favorite series!
5 Stars—Serafina is growing up and she’s doing it fast! I decided to reread the other 3 books before Seven Stars came out and I once again was caught up in the world of the Vanderbilts at Biltmore in Asheville. I was reminded of all that had happened before with the Black Cloak and Twisted Staff and the Old Man of the Mountains. I went back to seeing what good friends book characters can be and the lessons to be learned. Seven Stars was written in the same spirit as the rest of the series, but boy howdy is it dark! Serafina isn’t the little girl who just keeps Biltmore clear of rats anymore. She’s becoming a teenager who has the weight of the world on her shoulders. It was almost depressing reading the first half of the book when Serafina was just lost and in some ways, useless. And if you didn’t think it could get anymore evil or malevolent than Uriah, well then you’d be wrong. I had a little trouble putting all the pieces of the story together, even by the end, but I still understood enough to appreciate the brilliance of it all. I would even say that this might not be for the younger kids, just because of all the darkness! But I really enjoyed it and I can’t wait to see what happens next with Serafina and Braeden! An excellent story!
Another amazing Serafina story from Robert Beatty!
I love these books--and as far as I know this is the last in the series, and it's such a sweet ending.
Anyway, Serafina is, once again, totally awesome, but she struggles with some seriously dark, heavy stuff. There's complications in her friendship with Braeden, which broke my heart. And there new characters that are also really cool!
At some points I doubted this book--some things happen that make no sense until the ending, but then I realized the author knew what he was doing all along.
Just a warning--there's lots of death and darkness in this book. I don't think it's as creepy as the earlier books, but it's still not a light read.
But if you can handle that, read it! It was so fun.
Robert Beatty has a gift of language and he shares that gift in his outstanding Serafina series! His young heroine has been tasked as the guardian of Biltmore Estate and in every book, Beatty creates a new, sinister villain and requires Serafina and her friend Braeden to use not only their unique gifts, but their intelligence and Biltmore’s impressive library to conquer each foe. In “Seven Stars,” Braeden is gone to New York for school and the peace on the estate does not seem genuine to Serafina...and it isn’t. The evil in this installment is powerful and seems to be indestructible as well as able to turn those who are known to be strong and kind into indiscriminate murderers. Serafina does not know who to trust or how to protect the inhabitants of her beloved Biltmore. The characters of Mr. Vanderbilt, Pa, and even Essie the maid are given more depth as the series continues and new and interesting characters Jess, daughter of a cruel hunter for sport and Kinsey, a strong, young military man who owes much to Mr. Vanderbilt, are introduced. Beatty continues to write with such mastery of figurative and descriptive language that this former ELA teacher and current librarian had to read many sections aloud to whoever wandered into the room: “The sphinxes crouched low and sinister, looking more like rabid hyenas than either lions or humans, growling and snapping, saliva dripping from their mouths.” And how about: “...she scurried beneath a thicket of underbrush like a little weasel escaping the talons of a great horned owl.” I have kept a quote from Serafina and the Black Coat posted on my bulletin board-“Our character isn’t defined by the battles we win or lose, but by the battles we dare to fight.” I will now add this one from book 4-“The only way out is through.” ELA teachers would do well for themselves and their students to read this series to their classes as excellent examples of literary elements abound, but need to take care and read the series in order or many surprises will be completely spoiled if it is not.
Readers of Serafina and the Seven Stars need to be prepared for awesome intensity and many holler out loud moments beginning on page 291 (ARC version, so this may not be wholly accurate with the finished product) and until the resolution begins on page 311. And the author’s perfection in tying up the loose ends will leave them sighing with deep satisfaction, hence my seldom given 5 star rating.
Highly recommended for readers grades 4-8, and with enough action and references to history, mythology, and astronomy that many in high school may also enjoy it. No profanity or sexual content of any kind. The level of death and destruction is high, but Beatty does not get mired in descriptions of gore.
My name is Riley. I am eleven and I am sharing my mom’s account for this.
When I first read the title and saw the book cover, I already began thinking and trying to predict what was going to happen. I started reading and I would always be wrong on my predictions. What actually happened turned out to be waayy better!! I would read a chapter and want to read more. It’s like eating chips, you can’t have just one. I would start to read a chapter at bedtime (which you might want to think twice about…”tap-tap-tap…”) and by the end of the night I would have read five instead of one.
This was probably my favorite Serafina book of the series. I really liked that in this story, as Serafina puts it, “Her rats had gotten bigger and a whole lot nastier…”. Another thing I liked was that the main characters made me laugh. I found it interesting that even though Serafina is fierce and strong and determined, she had to find new ways to solve the problems in this book.
This is a good story to read with your family (my mom and I read it together) because they have great lessons in the story. I am kind of a sucker for precepts (thanks to Mr. Brown and my fourth- grade teacher) and I have a few new favorites from this book to add into my collection like “The only way out is through” from Serafina’s pa.
I absolutely loved this book but sometimes it gets very descriptive about things like what a panther does when a panther is pushed, so it may not be good for younger readers.
I’ve been a huge fan of Robert Beatty’s Serafina series since the first book came out, so you can imagine how excited I was when Robert Beatty books contacted me and asked if I would like to be an advanced reader for the fourth book in the series. This means writing an honest review on goodreads and Amazon, the Amazon one I will post after the book’s official release (July ninth).
Serafina and the seven stars follows Serafina, now a teenager, as she continues to watch over Biltmore estate as the CRC. With Braeden off at boarding school and no mysterious haints for her to slay, she’s been feeling mighty lonely lately, and has taken up the habit of doubting herself. One day, Mr. Vanderbilt invites Serafina to live upstairs, and it doesn’t take too long for her notice something sinister is brewing in the house. All of a sudden, she can’t trust anyone - not the guests who have come for the autumn hunt, not even her closest allies. This highly anticipated new release is sure to leave you speechless.
I absolutely loved this book. It created the best creepy, suspenseful atmosphere while also keeping up a feeling of levity throughout the novel. No matter how bad things got, there were still people and places we could go to for peace.
The mystery will have you hanging onto every word, desperate to find out more. And when all was finally revealed, it was all but disappointing. The plot is so cleverly crafted, I never would have guessed the reveal on my own. This is a spoiler free review, so I won’t give details, but it’s truly genius, so satisfying to put the pieces together alongside Serafina, and my personal favorite part of the novel.
Over the course of the series, we have grown to love each and every one of Robert’s characters. Whether you straight up fell head over heels for Braeden (cause who didn’t?), or Serafina with her ferocity and courage, or grew to love Pa for his wise and kind words, or any one of the new characters we meet in this book like Jess or Lieutenant Kinsley, we have all fallen under Robert’s spell of paper and ink.
My only real complaint about this book is a highly subjective one, and I understand that, but it’s that there were a couple of characters I was looking forward to seeing and I didn’t get to, but that’s a me problem and a small one at that, so don’t let it stop you from picking this book up for yourself!
I gave Robert Beatty’s Serafina and the seven stars a five out of five stars.
I enjoyed the last book of this series. Serafina and Braydon find themselves up against a strange force that has turned Builtmore house against itself and the people staying there. The two of them, with help from a new friend, Jessica, are able to save the people and the house. I think this is a great fantasy book for children, and I think adults would like it too.
This is probably my favorite of all the Serafina books! Beatty has definitely started to “grow” the content of his books with his readers. It is super suspenseful and has some really great twists and turns; especially when you find out who the “bad guy” is. I have loved watching Serafina and Braeden grow during these 4 books and this one did not disappoint.
I enjoyed this story and the characters as I have all the others, though I must admit that the plot magic wasn’t as logical as the previous books. It felt like quite a stretch, but a good read nonetheless.
Frequently, I tire of series; however, each newly released book is better than the last. This trend continues with Serafina and the Seven Stars.
In this latest book of the Serafina series set on the grounds of the historical Biltmore Estate, Serafina, the self-professed and recognized "Protector of Biltmore", is trying to adjust to recent changes in her life. Serafina's friend, Braeden Vanderbilt, is leaving the estate for NYC and boarding school. George Vanderbilt has asked Serafina to move from the basement where she lives with her father to the family's quarters on the second floor so she can better keep an eye on the guests and the Vanderbilts' daughter, baby Nell. She has only recently adjusted to the fact that she is a shapeshifter like her mother, a catamount in the form of a black panther.
Although not a hunter himself, George Vanderbilt hosts an annual hunt. The next day after the party arrives, Serafina runs ahead in her panther form to warn members of her animal family. A fog rolls in making it difficult for Serafina and the hunting party to see. Within the fog, an unclear shape is swiftly moving through the hunters on horseback eliciting them to randomly fire their shotguns. When the fog lifts, Serafina finds that the entire party has been slaughtered. Serafina begins her investigation to determine what entity killed the hunters before others are killed.
Although the reading level for the Serafina series is grades 4 - 6 (approximately 9 -11 years old), this novel is the darkest of the lot. Be warned if you have a child with an overly active imagination. You might find her with the covers over her head at night. This books does teach some good values, such as friendship, duty, courage, and the the importance of education. Having visited the Biltmore Estate several times I love how the author weaves the story into the lives of the Vanderbilts. The estate's and Vanderbilt's descriptions are spot on in their detail. If you are fans of fantasy, historical fiction, or simply a good story, you might want to begin the Serafina series.
*I received an ARC and promised to give an honest review:*
"Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades, Or loose the cords of Orion?" Job 38:31
In Serafina and the Seven Stars, Serafina must once again assume her role as the Guardian of Biltmore and it's inhabitants. But this time, she must do so alone. Due to reasons beyond her control, her trusted friend and companion Braeden Vanderbilt, has been sent away from his home.
In the year that has passed since the events of the Black Cloak, Serafina has discovered her true self, and continues to grow in her powers. But none of her trials and adventures have prepared her for what is to come next. The mysterious powers of the heavens themselves are about to effect Serafina's life, and the lives of the Vanderbilt family. Serafina will face new challenges and events that will cause her to question the very family she serves to protect.
I have greatly enjoyed reading this addition to the Serafina series by author Robert Beatty. The story within these pages will cause you to question the motives and relations between Serafina and the Vanderbilt family, but so that you cannot help but continuing the story until the end. And perhaps you shall be overjoyed as I was to find at the end something many of us have hoped for since The Black Cloak.
Another really fun installment in the Serafina series! The mystery isn’t as tight in The Seven Stars as it was in the first two books (there are a few red herrings that annoyed me), and like in the third the writing is a bit repetitive. The narrator tells us over and over again that Serafina is jumpy and skittish, and her doubts about Braeden are repeated lots of times as well. The best part of this series remains the vivid landscape and how Biltmore Estate is brought to life through story, but I’m beginning to sense that this series continuing as more of a cash cow than an investment in good story. Still, despite all this, it’s an enjoyable if light read, and I’ll continue to give the next in the series a try for a while.
I loved this book! The book was thrilling and exciting, I was never bored! I really enjoyed the plot and the suspense. At parts I actually screamed, it was so thrilling! I also noticed how parts from the other books in the series were tied into this book. Overall this book has been one of my favorite books and I would recommend it.
A nice end to the series (or if it's not ended for Serafina, it at least ends here for me). Serafina spends more time indoors and with people, actually having interactions instead of racing around the woods being torn to shreds. So that's nice. The plot is clever (if maybe a bit forced), but ultimately left me wondering why every horrible thing imaginable has to happen at Biltmore. By this point you'd think the Vanderbilts surely must be thinking of selling. Instead they are content to leave the safety of their family and their home to their 13-year-old "guardian."
All in all not a bad series, but not one I'd read again.
Serafina and the Seven Stars is the 4th book in the series by Robert Beatty. Due out 9th July 2019 from Disney-Hyperion, it's 352 pages and will be available in ebook and hardcover formats.
This series is aimed at middle grade readers and includes some actual historical places and characters around which the narrative is woven. Though the target audience is younger, it can certainly be enjoyed by adults as well. The plotting is well done and the author has a deft touch with dramatic tension. Main character Serafina is the shapeshifting guardian of Biltmore and this time she's by herself without her friend and mentor Braeden.
I received a sample excerpt for review purposes and found it engaging and well written. This is a tightly woven series and presupposes some backstory familiarity of the reader. I would recommend reading the series in order.
Looking forward to reading the complete book as well as future installments.
Four stars.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
I am always so excited to get the email letting me know that I will be an advanced reader for a Robert Beatty book.
I have loved this series since the beginning. And this book is an excellent addition to the first three. I always worry about getting involved in books that are in a series because I am afraid that they won’t be as good as the book that sucked me in; I had nothing to worry about here. This book continues the excellence of the first three with a story that is just as compelling as the first three.
After three significant battles for the safety of Biltmore in the first three books, Serafina finds herself anxiously bored with life in the house now that things have seemingly gone back to normal. As the protector of the Biltmore house and its residents, Serafina finds herself on the lookout for trouble, but this time she is facing the unknown without the help of Braeden at her side; her best friend and most trusted companion has been sent away to boarding school hundreds of miles away.
When dark forces return to Biltmore this time, it is the stuff of nightmares (I have always thought gargoyles were creepy). No one is safe, and the danger is literally in every nook and cranny of this magnificent home.
An unexpected and exciting addition to the first three books, this one left me wanting more. My students are already asking me about this one and when they will get to read it. I can’t wait to have this on the shelf when school starts back in the fall. I have no doubt that it will be just as popular as the first three are.
Serafina and the Seven Stars is set in the 1900's at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina. Although a fictional story one can visit the Biltmore Estate and find some of the places and things Serafina has seen or went to in the story. Serafina is always ready to defend Biltmore Estate and her friends against any enemy or dark force that may appear on the estate. An exhilarating and exciting book that keeps readers wanting to find out what happens to Serafina. Definitely will be a #1 best seller!
Such a great read! Loved the continued adventures of Serafina and all the other characters. In the previous books in the series, the Biltmore Estate has been the setting, but in this book the Biltmore is a main character! I'm going to have to go back and re-read, because I read it so fast to find out what happens! I love the inclusion of fantasy and magic and am already looking forward to the next in the series! I think the books get more and more intriguing with each new continuation of the life of Serafina and the Biltmore. Of course, I now need to go visit the Biltmore estate again and look for parts mentioned in the book. So hard to not give anything away. Trust me - you will not be disappointed!
This book is so amazing!! I love Robert Beaty’s books and I’m always so excited to hear that a new one came out! This book has so many twists and surprises. I love how Serafina is so brave in all the books and always willing to do what’s right even if it’s scary or hard. I would definitely recommend this series. I love this book so much!!!!
I really love the whole Serafina series and this book was a good way to rap it up! This book had me wanting to read more and never wanting to put it down! It is full of twists and turns and the end made it all worth while. I love Robert Beatty's books and look forward to them every time a new one comes out!
"It seemed as if everyone had a job to do, a role to play, to fix the always breaking world."
I really enjoyed this one! What I really appreciate about this series is how atmospheric it is. The author has a way of making you feel as though you are actually there with the characters. I love how each book is better than the last, you can really see Beatty grow as a writer.
This series may not be perfect, but it's thrilling, fun, and can even give me the chills on occasion. Serafina and the Seven Stars is a strong addition to the series as a whole, and I can't wait to see what comes next. Maybe a Willa of the Wood sequel? Please?
This review was written by my 10 year old son who has read all four books in the Serafina series...
Serafina and the Seven Stars is a thrilling page turner!
Robert Beatty’s newest edge-of-your-seat thriller continues his Serafina series. This book is the fourth installment in this series about a daring young heroine near the turn of the century at the Biltmore Estate, the famous house in North Carolina. After Serafina protects the Biltmore and its residents from mysterious figures in the first three books of the series, all is peaceful. But, then, Serafina becomes worried after she witnesses a shocking crime in the house. As one mystery leads to another, there are more questions than answers as Serafina fights the new threat to the Biltmore’s residents. Serafina’s search for answers takes her all over the Estate, introduces her to new friends, and reveals new sides to this fascinating protagonist. She is a likable heroine because she is smart and curious, and the story makes you laugh. The suspense and action surrounding Serafina’s adventures will keep you turning the pages. Serafina and the Seven Stars has beautiful imagery, captivating storytelling, and unique characters that definitely live up to its predecessors.
I really loved Serafina and the seven stars the plot was amazing and creative. I was so eager to see what happens next. One thing I really loved was the events that happened to the characters in between the books Splintered heart and Seven stars. The book really gave me a clear visual idea of the events that occurred, I loved it so much I stayed up late going through it. There is so much affection, drama, magic, and history. there is nothing I would change about it, Thank you for making me an advanced reader, I appreciate it.
