Using Drought USA by Ian MacDonald continues the saga of Rob Lyons and this time he hopes a war between allies can be avoided. The plot and special circumstances begin in Bermuda, a water-starved island that provides a stark picture of how to conserve this essential resource in the face of climatic drought, and lead to an unforeseen political solution. The opening scenes set up the social and political implications a major drought will have on American agriculture. Water being an essential for civilization and without a plentiful amount available, Americans will face an economic catastrophe. The President must act to secure water for the parched Imperial Valley in California or risk losing his next election. Nothing is off the table as Lyons begins an impossible mission controlled from the State Department by a man driven to control affairs of state. The mysterious disclosure of the plan imperils Lyons’s mission. Unlikely exploits guided by Control enable him to frustrate his pursuers, until they have him.
Rob Lyons uses a convenient in-the-ear communication device and a marvelous ring in his mission. These two special inventions allow Lyons to escape, evade, and enlighten other characters at crucial times in the story line. These two pieces of plausible futuristic technology also make an interesting statement about the potential for each of us to be monitored and controlled 24/7 in a “connected” world. The characters' decisions and the political background portray insiders dedicated to preserving their own political futures in Washington D.C. The premise for the conflict is sound and reflects the impending crisis of global warming. A must-read for fans of political thrillers, conspiracy theories, and end of the world scenarios.
