After years of being in the shadow of Joe Montana, lefty Steve Young took over the quarterback duties of the San Francisco 49ers football team and led them to glory with an overwhelming Super Bowl victory. It would turn out to be the last championship won by the Niners, leaving Young as a hard act to follow. This book was one two biographies (the other being The Steve Young Story) quickly published after Young's victory, and I did enjoy it. The author does a quite decent job of relaying Young's childhood and his travails in rising to the top. It's a quick read and would certainly fit on the shelf of any gridiron fan.

Book Season = Autumn (when Candlestick actually looks okay)
Steve young Staying in the pocket Steve Young is an admirable young man. He came from a hard working family. When he was in high school he took college classes and ended high school with a 4.20 GPA. Young was always athletic and did good in sports, but no one could even emagine what he would become. This book is written in a third person, because Young would not write or even talk about himself. This makes the book quite remarkable. It is a remarkable book about a remarkable man. Young is also directly related to Brigham Young, the founder of BYU. Heince having the last name Young. Steve Young set out to gain an education at Brigham Young University. Young had played football in highschool, but he football career didn’t take off until his years at BYU. He was even recognized as the most valuable player in the league. He later made it onto the 49ers team as the backup quarterbacks. He was the next man up to the greatest quarterback of his time, Joe Montana. Young even exceeded his superior. I really enjoyed this book a lot. This book really shows the character of an incredible athlete and scholar. When I was reading the book I could relate a little and it made me think maybe I could be like him. In the book quotes from steve Young are all over the place. You have his exact words from reporters and friends which adds a dimension of reality. One of my favorite quotes is from Steve Young’s thought on the field, “Right up to the end, whether winning or losing, you have to finish it.” Young was heading off the field after his team the 49ers just tasted of defeat. He came off with his head held high because in the heart a loss is as good as a win as long as you finish hard. I would suggest this book to anyone because it can definitely benefit everyone and if you're a football fan, oh boy! You would love it. I am personally not into football so don’t say no because you don’t like football. Overall, I seriously enjoyed this book and would love other to read it as well. If a sequel came out I would most definitely read it. This book is definitely worth reading.
Imagine getting your first snap as an nfl quarter back and completing the pass. Thats exactly what steve young did. This book is about how he became one of the greatest left handed quarterbacks of all time. It explains his journey to the nfl and how he took advantage of his opportunity. He then shared the starting spot with joe montana.
There are many figurative devices in this book. One of them being an over exaggeration. When steve young took the field he stated "im gonna throw for 1000 yards today. (which has never been done) He also uses the starting spot as if it were a human when he stated "this starting spot is calling to me"
I gave this book a 5 star because i love learning all about steve you. It gives good information about his career. Also he live in provo so it makes it better lol. I would recommend this book to any football fan that likes to learn about different peoples carreers.
B.R.8 Steve Young: Staying in the Pocket, is a great book by Dick Harmon. This book is perfect for fans of sports and motivational books. This book has a great motivational theme. Here is an example of this theme from the text, “family always came first and foremost in their schedules and lives.”
This book also has great characterization. Here is another example from the text,”Even after Steve Young became, for a time, the NFL’s highest-paid player and helped his parents, brothers, and sister financially, Sherry Young still works as a substitute teacher at both the junior and senior high school level. I strongly recommend this book it was a very fun shorter read. It is one-hundred and ninety-two pages so the perfect size for a quick read. I think that it could be for many ages, for ages ten through adult it would be great. I think many people should read this!
Read this years ago and just saw their is a new book by Steve Young. I'm not a football fan by any means, but I love biographies so I'm excited to get my hands on it.
what i like about this book is that it is a good motivater. it really relates to me because like me being small on my team he was small to! so that really relates to me and he was to the point where he was homesick and he was small he was the 8th string quaterback and he just want to go home!see steve young didnt come in as this number one automaticially he had to work for that and he did he pushed him self and kept working on becoming the best no matter what happended he kept pushing and thats one thing i admire about him! steve young pushed himself and look what he did superbowls, mvp, hawaii apperances he did amazing and he came in as the 8th string quaterback and wann know what else! he was so fast they moved him to free saftey and later moved him back because of his speed he would out run the running backs! he reminds me of one of my local heros shaky smith he plays for utah(wich sucks) but he adoted his brother so he juggles football, his brother, and school and he is an insane smart kid extremely smart. but idk how many people who would be able to do that be a dad and jugle school and football but it just hsows that people go thorugh stuff everyday!but back to the book steve young worked his way back and that shows courage and that he wasnt afraid to fail! he might have wanted to quite but he didnt he kept going and that just gives me personal motivation and that i look at what he did it makes me think what can i do! and he will always be my personal hero for that! steve young is one of those guys where you just can always love becasue he didnt really talk crap he just did it and thats all he needed. and he was quite in the press he wasnt like it was a bad reffing game he accpeted what he did wrong and worked on it himeslef to help him improve and get better and that jsut sets an example for all of us other young athletes that try to follow in his footsteps! i also know that its just another thing that we have to loook up to him for and try to copy are selfs and the thing is this book never really got boring okay maybe towards the end! but other then that i thought it was really good and i learned allthough like 15 pages where missing thanks to my little sisters! but i liked it and my dad was kind enought to but it for me but i really liked this book mainly because it motivated me to see waht he went through and kinda set a goal for me to live up to!
Great book of the special events in Steve's life. A good devout LDS example who is embarrassed to have so much money. He makes everyone feel like he is their neighbor. He collected 13 paychecks before cashing any of them. He kept driving his old Oldsmobile a year after going pro. Then he bought a truck. He speaks around the country after games at firesides.
Motto: To celebrate everything you improve upon. If a boy misses 8 catches one game and only missed 6 the next, it is a Diary Queen day
Best quote: "A man or a woman who places the wealth of this world and the things of time in the scales against the things of God and the wisdom of eternity, has no eyes to see, no ears to hear, no heart to understand". - Brigham Young
This sports biography takes the approach of focusing on the individual just as much as on the athlete. This can lead to idolization if the author gets too close to the subject matter. In this case, however, the added perspective is especially beneficial, as Steve Young was in a unique position--being a talented, highly-touted athlete sitting behind an all-time great--and ultimately succeeded as a football player just as much because of personal traits as because of ability.
