"Danielle was a distraction. A beautiful distraction. And I feared she might ruin everything."

In a kingdom ruled by vampires, humans are abused and forced into blood slaves. Danielle Parker is one of the unfortunates who was kidnapped and wiped off her memories. Danielle has had enough and decides to escape but her plans are thwarted when she’s selected to compete for the prince’s heart. The winner will be turned into a vampire and taken as his bride. And the losers’ blood will be fed to the princess-to-be to complete her transition. As much as she is disgusted by the idea, she cannot deny her attraction to Prince Aiden or his troubled brother, Julian.

⤷ I really dislike 'The Selection' books and hate love triangles, especially when its brothers fighting for the same girl. Yet, I was so intrigued by the blurb that I felt I had to read this book!

⤷ This book had such amazing twist and turns but was disappointing when it came to delivering them. There was so much potential wasted! The book was too fast-paced and did not take time at all building relationships with the characters or the plot!

⤷ I was not a fan of the world-building. When it comes to fantasy books it's important to take time introducing the world otherwise the reader is left confused. I read the prequel, 'Blood Heirs', beforehand which assisted with understanding the world better!

⤷ What really confused me the most was the fact Danielle has hated vampires for the last decade after how much they have caused her pain yet it was so easy for her to fall for one? It was too sudden and had not developed at all!

⤷ Definitely, prefer Julian over Aiden as they growth between him and Danielle was better as it did not feel forced!

⤷ I feel like if I read this book when I was younger I would have enjoyed it more!

"I know you have no reason to believe me, but I will protect you, Danielle. You have my word"

I would consider this book alright. I did enjoy it enough to want to continue to the next book! I would recommend this book to younger readers just based on my experience when reading during early high school these were the types of books I had loved!

Thank you, L. Danvers, for providing a copy of this book for an honest review! :)

I found Curses and Crowns to be a mash up of The Selection meets Twilight, with an evil fairytale like curse thrown in for flavor. We have a competition between four unsuspecting girls to be the next queen of the vampires, a kingdom that was caused by a curse, an angsty vampire prince who is tormented by his past misdeeds and human slaughtering ways who is suppose to choose a human to make his undead queen, and a werewolf sorta prince who wants to stir everybody up and force them to be puppets in his games- until he might actually have feelings inside his cold, dead heart.

The world building was hands down my favorite part of the story! We have a modern world, but hidden away are vampire conclaves (kingdoms?) where vampire families reign with human servants that were either taken or unsuspectingly wandered into the boundary. When I first started reading, I assumed that this was another world or a different time, but when the characters leave the kingdom, everything is the way it is now (including watching The Real Housewives on tv!). Let's add in werewolves who are capable of killing vampires with one bite, witches who can do amazing kinds of magic, and all the court politics and intrigue to keep you happy!

What I did not care as much for was the romance aspect of the story. The main character Danielle ends up developing feelings for the vampire (which she has spent the last 8 years hating) prince Aiden after like one day of meeting him, where they walk in a garden and he spouts poetry to her and she tells him her backstory. Nope. I do not like insta-love, which this felt a little like (insta-lust, totally believe in that!) since they never had a chance to develop real feelings before everything went to hell. Also, Aiden felt a little flat to me as a character, more like an idea than a real person.
If we have to have romance, I am 100% Team Julian, for 1)because I always have a soft spot for the bad guy, 2)he has more personality and had more opportunity to interact with Danielle and have real feelings, and 3)werewolves are cooler than vampires. (Also the fact that Aiden composed poetry instantly made me not like him, but that is just me!)

Overall Curses and Crown had some nice surprises that I did not expect and I would love to see what happens next in this dangerous, glamorous world. Ps, can there be more Grace? She is awesome!

I reviewed a complimentary copy of this title.

I am actually giving this novel a 3.5 stars out of 5. I really enjoyed this novel, it was fast paced and the characters and world were intriguing.

I am glad to learn there is a prequel novella, because I feel like a lot of information is just provided in this novel. Like how the 4 were born, about Julian.. so many things could be explored before this novel even began.

My one hiccup with this novel is because it is so fast paced Danielle finds herself falling for the Prince almost immediately. But after hating vampires for the last 10-years it just seems a bit sudden even if the plot of the novel is moving forward so quickly.

My favourite character is Julian... he honestly reminds me so much of Damon from the Vampire Diaries it is crazy.

How this novel ended to was quite different than what I was imagining would happen, so it was very nice to see the story take some turns that were not on my radar.

I will definitely be continuing on with this series because I need to see more Julian, and what ever happened with Bianca possibly bringing back Victoria. Oh the drama !

Following eight miscarriages, and in spite of her adopted son, Julian, Queen Rosa turns to a witch for help so that she will have blood heirs to inherit the royal crown instead of a commoner. Vindictively the witch grants her request but at a terrible price - on their 20th birthdays, her offspring will turn into vampires while Julian will become a werewolf whose lethal bite will allow him to retain his power over them.

A millennium later, Aiden, Alexander, Charlotte, Natalie and Julian have ruled over Crescent Cape in an uneasy alliance, separated from the rest of the modern world by a magical boundary erected by loyal witches.

Danielle was eight years old when her parents were murdered. Compelled to forget by the vampire responsible, she was brought to Crescent Cape to be used as a blood slave. Ten years later, she has no memory of how she came here and dreams of escaping to be with her parents. Her plans to abscond are thwarted when she is summoned to the palace and forced to participate in a competition with three other girls to win Prince Aidan’s heart. The winner will be turned into a vampire and become his bride while the losers will be fed to the princess-to-be, in order to complete her transition. In spite of herself, Danielle finds herself drawn to Aiden as well as his troubled brother, Julian. With enemies scheming to usurp the throne inside and outside the palace, can Danielle keep her wits long enough to escape and will she want to?

Curses and Crowns is the first instalment in the Vampires Of Crescent Cape series and was my first introduction to the author. Having read the prequel, Blood Heirs, I was impressed by the world building which the author has gone at great lengths to portray. We have a magical boundary separating the modern world from the supernatural one in which unsuspecting humans who accidentally stumble into, are kept as blood slaves. Coupled with sibling rivalry, a love triangle, a vampire tormented by his bloody past and rival kingdoms plotting their downfall, we have the makings of a compelling series.

The book is told from multiple points of view, thereby offering greater insight. The characters are quickly introduced, developed and understood. I did feel that the romance was a tad rushed, which is a trap that most YA novels typically fall into. Hopefully we’ll see the characters more fleshed out in the next instalment.

This was a fast paced, action packed book with enough twists and turns to ensnare the reader into picking up the next instalment. Ideal for YA fans of The Selection and The Vampire Diaries.

Danielle is a blood slave to the blood heirs in a kingdom protected by witches wards. She was taken from her family at eight and brought to the village. She hated the life and had almost been killed many times over when vampires took too much blood. The latest bout she was saved by a guard. She took what money she saved and planned to escape back to the family she remembered. At that time, a knock came at the hut and she was taken to the castle where she met three other women. They were to vie for the Prince’s affections and would be made Queen. The rest of the women would forfeit their lives to the new Queen to help her fully change to vampire.
Aiden is the prince and his brother Julian set up the contest between the women. Aiden is furious but decides to go along with the plans not knowing what Julian’s real intentions were. The blood heirs are comprised of five siblings. Their mother asked a witch to ensure she became pregnant with four blood heirs and Julian had been adopted. In turn, the witch made sure they were immortals and each would turn into a vampire at 20. Julian became a werewolf instead and could end each of their lives with one bite. He had plans to take over the kingdom and only one sibling knew the truth.
The women became fast friends. Aiden does not live on human blood he has a witch make his artificial blood. Little does Danielle know that her and Aiden have a past. It was wiped from her memories. As they begin to grow feelings for one another, a new threat arises. Also, Julian is developing feelings for her as well. The threat is to the blood heirs from another jealous vampire Bianca who wants Aiden for herself. She has created hybrid werewolves-vampires that do her bidding. She discovers a ruse made by the blood heirs to kill her so she sets loose her hybrids. Danielle, Grace and another come to the aid of the blood heirs. Who lives and dies? Danielle is bitten by a hybrid…what will happen? Can they save her? This book ends in a cliffhanger! Anyone who is familiar with the Vampire Diaries and The Originals will see many similarities to the Original siblings and lore in this book but the author has made them her own. I received this book for free and am leaving a voluntary review!

This book started off strong for me with a plot that really pulled me in. Danielle has been taken from her home at an early age to become a blood slave for vampires in a kingdom that is protected with witch spells. HELLO?! You had me at blood slave! She was miserable and sick and tired of almost dying when vampires fed on her a little too long so she was stashing the money she was making and planning an escape. However Danielle's escape plan is never executed because she becomes one of the chosen to vie for Prince Aiden's heart therefore becoming his Queen, or dying in the process. A plot devised by Aiden's scheming brother Julian.

At this point, the story line becomes all too familiar to me. With an evil brother Julian, can we say Damon Salvatore or perhaps even Klaus, as he is a werewolf, and a brother with "vampire morals" who only drinks artificial blood. Sounds like Stefan Salvatore to me, and a girl who is conflicted about her feelings for both. Just like The Originals the author throws in other siblings in the mix who aren't quite developed. Tell me more about their dynamic in the family.

The story quickly declines into very little character development as there is a very quick antagonist introduced, Bianca a vampire who has been in love with Aiden and is not interested in him finding a human Queen, followed by an even quicker battle between the characters complete with Bianca's hybrids and witches. Witches? Tell me more...do they just ward the Kingdom, can they control the werewolves?
In addition the love triangle was instant, but I would have preferred the characters to be built up more before falling for each other. It's hard to be team anybody when you don't have a connection to the characters.

I think there are some great ideas here, again blood slaves and arranged vampire marriages, two things we have never seen before in this genre of vampires and werewolves. And the Kingdom of Crescent Cape....there is so much potential for background history here that is not included. I hope the author is able to slow down, fill in the details and provide better character development in the remaining series as it has the bones to be spectacular.

Kidnapped and forced to become a blood slave for a vampire Kingdom, Danielle longs for escape. Before she's able to run away she gets coerced into vying for the prince of the vampires, Aidan's, affections.

This was a quick read and had enough happening to keep the reader occupied. At times I felt like some of it was a bit far fetched and too convenient and others could've used more explanation. Like how I understand how the blood heirs came to be but not how the human world reacts to it. Are vampires normalised in this world? There's another Kingdom that is ruled by the vampires but the blood heirs Kingdom, which used to be human, is sealed off from humans.

Another issue I had was the Insta-love with not just one, but two characters. I have no idea why Danielle's feelings started to change for either character, or her feelings of betrayal that came about from having had one conversation with the older brother...
This quotes sums this up nicely: “Don’t tell me you’re in love with one of them already. For goodness’ sake, Aiden, they got here yesterday.”

Excerpt From: Danvers, L. “Curses and Crowns.” L. Danvers.

What I did like was the writing style, I think that is what kept me reading till the end despite my need to seriously suspend my disbelief in parts. I also really liked this concept of competing for the blood heirs hand and Xander .

2.75 stars. I enjoyed this but I'd enjoy it more if the world and a couple of characters were more fleshed out.

Curses and Crowns is the first installment in a young adult paranormal fantasy series featuring vampires and werewolves. The leading female, Danielle, is a young girl who was kidnapped from her family to be a blood slave in a kingdom ruled by vampires. Aiden, the lead male, is a vampire prince who lives off of artificial blood to prevent himself from becoming an out of control killing machine. These two characters lives cross when she is chosen to compete with three other girls for an opportunity to become his wife. Sounds like a twisted episode of The Bachelor. Throw in some witches, werewolves, rival kingdoms, the beginnings of a love triangle, and dark secrets and you've got a story that is reminiscent of others in this genre. This is a relatively quick read and the story is told from alternating points of view of the primary characters. Because it was such a quick read, there was very little character development and instances of characters going from zero to kissing in practically no time. I felt like the author tried to do too much in too few pages. The story suffered a bit from this. Regardless, I feel like there are hints of something there that could evolve into something new in this genre. I recommend that the author try to slow things down to enable more development in future installments. It would be interesting to hear more about the kingdoms and characters' backstories.

I received a copy of this book from the author.

ONE INTERESTING HOT READ!!!
Wow! Talk about a walk in the dark. This is one exciting, action packed, hard hitting, steady paced, heart pounding, pulse racing, nailbiting, page turning bombshell that captivates from the start. All the twists and turns, ups and downs, ins and outs, along with a few bumps and bruises make for one thrilling experience. With all the drama, intrigue, mystery, danger and suspense this bad boy keeps you on your toes and entire focus on the pages. A rollercoaster wild ride with a plethora of emotions to sort through as the tension spirals and imaginations run rampant. The characters and their personalities are unique with qualities and traits that balance out perfectly. The scenes are descriptive and detailed it really pulls this bad boy together beautifully. With such graphic descriptions you can picture each scenario as it flows smoothly. Danvers did an excellent job bringing this read. Fantastic job Danvers, thanks for sharing this awesome read with us.

Could it be?

The beauty of vampires is that they are the work of pure fiction. Since they are fiction, those brave souls that attempt to create a captivating story that includes these fascinating creatures are allowed to mold them in any way they are fit. Yes it's true that being a huge vampire fan, I can easily see the similarities between this story and the world of Vampire Diaries. What I liked is how L. Danvers expanded on certain ideas that appeals to so many fans. One idea is the Klaus/Damon like character Julian and while his self centered motives remain a mystery by this book's end, it's clear that he has a strong heart that demands to be acknowledged. The last few chapters were very exciting and has definitely piqued my interest. I finished this book within a few short days which is in itself a high compliment. I can't wait to see what happens next!

The Selection meets Vampire Diaries with a splash of Hunger Games in this drama filled must read! I am struggling to put into words how fun and addicting this story was and I still get excited just thinking about it. It was very well-written with a perfect balance between storyline and character development. The characters are multi-dimensional and varied and I felt a connection to so many of them. The author expertly relayed Danielle’s story so that you felt her struggles, friendship with Grace, and the romantic tension with Aiden and Julien. The ending was action-packed and I can’t wait for the next book. If you are looking for a guilty-pleasure read full of romance, drama, and action, this is for you!

I expected this book to be more like the Selection. A bunch of catty girls fighting for the Princes attention. But it was not that at all. Danielle and Grace form a fast friendship, bonding over the fact that neither of them wants to be the new Princess or become a vampire. And as much as Danielle doesn’t want to become a vampire or marry one she finds herself attracted to both Aiden and his Werewolf brother Julian. Curses and Crowns is a fast paced book that leaves you on the edge of your seat, and wishing for just a few hundred more pages. I’m dying to know what happens next. I can’t wait to read the next book!

I really enjoyed this book. The description of it grabbed my attention, and once I started reading it I could not put it down. This is an interesting twist on a vampire story. Daniella, a blood slave, is a strong character who is struggling to survive in a world she was forced into. Aiden, a prince, who is scared to love again. Julian, a werewolf, wants the power his brother holds, but falls for the girl chosen to distract his brother. Add in attempted murders, a crazy contest, and the beginning of a complicated love story, and you have the beginnings of a great series. I am anxious to see what happens in the next book.

I can definitely see how Danvers used her imagination with my favorite genres here. Damon and Klaus are my favorite characters to love/hate at any given time from Vampire Diaries and The Originals. Julian set up a scenario that was suppose to be part of a plan that isn't fully discussed, but seems it backfired. This story has the perfect love triangle between Aiden, Danielle, and Julian. Vampire or Wolf will have you pulling your hair. The last few chapters were action packed right up to the cliff hanger ending. You'll want to start here so that there is no confusion when you get Book 2....which is where I'm headed right now.

This was a super fun book! It was fast-paced, and I loved Grace and Danielle’s friendship and the blood heirs’ dynamic with their older brother Julian. The quick intensity of Julian’s feelings for Danielle was not my favorite, but again the book was so easy and quick to read that in the end, I really don’t mind.
I liked that the girls mostly tried to be friends because of the horrible situation they were in, rather than hating and trying to one-up each other. It was annoying that Tara and Amara fell off from the book really early on, though, with no explanation of what happened to them.
Aiden has a lot of explaining to do to Danielle, and I’m ready to see where this story goes!

I enjoyed reading this story and I believe that many will really like it. I had a few issues with the story like how we got to a love triangle right away when the romance really lacked. The characters didn’t really know each other and yet they fall in love instantly and a love triangle? That kind of bothered me a bit. I needed to know more about the characters (all of them).
It is a very fast read tho and maybe that’s why the story felt a little rushed and we didn’t get to know a lot about the characters.
I did take a star away because of the ending, not my favorite (sorry).

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review

I love vampire books so I couldn't resist when this book was offered as an ARC.

I liked the multiple perspectives in this book, it is interesting to know what the main characters think instead of just Danielle's perspective

I love Aiden and Julian both characters hate but also love each other and does indeed remind me of The Vampire Diaries, since there is a possible love triangle.

I hope in the next books that Danielle will be more trained in fighting so she can be a straight out badass

Ok

First up, if you like love triangles, then this is for you. I don’t, I hate them - and this one has one, at least in book 1. Mayhap things are resolved better later, but it annoyed me. That said, some people love the angst and twist they deliver, and justifiable so. This one, a first person, multiple POV PNR, features a vampire price and his older, adopted werewolf brother falling for the same human... a human who has no choice but to play a game she was thrust into. It’s a bit fun, very hectic, and a touch too fast emotionally speaking.

Very good book. Exciting and kept my attention throughout the entire book. Seamless transitions from one scene to the other. Excellent character development. The ending was PERFECT, although that may not be the common consensus. Grace is maybe my favorite character even though she isn't the main character; I love her courage and bravery. Julian is my second favorite, also not a main character, because he is what he is and doesn't pretend not to be. I cannot wait for the next book!

Received as an ARC, this is an honest review. Danielle has been a blood slave since a child, and she finally may have a way out. But the perceived plan goes awry when finds herself competing for a vampire prince. At first she wants to flee or be among those whom will lose; things change as she gets to know Aiden. For both of them, there are things worth the fight. A good start to this series.

I was able to read an ARC of this book in exchange for a review.

While I did enjoy the story, it felt a little rushed to me. The three main characters seemed to fall madly into a love triangle almost instantly, with no effort or proper reasoning given. It was a good plot, and I'll probably give the sequel a chance.
Fans of The Originals and The Selection may enjoy this one.

The Selection Series but with Vampires and Werewolves... Oh my! This is a fast paced, intriguing, page turner that blends mystery, romance and drama perfectly! The story line is brilliant and fun, and the cliffhanger makes you pick up the second book immediately. So glad there are 3 more books in the series!
