How to Retrain Your Appetite

Rate this book
This self-help book is for people who have gained weight because they have lost touch with using natural hunger and fullness signals to guide their eating. This book shows you how to relearn to eat in tune with your body, whilst still eating your favourite foods, taking one manageable step at a time. It is the antithesis to ‘going on a diet’. It is also the antidote to ‘clean eating’, as you eat what you already, and have always, loved instead of a prescribed set of acceptable foods. The unique position of The Appetite Doctor’s appetite retraining programme is that it bridges biology and psychology and puts the focus on specific habit change, all while taking into account the natural resistance we have to making changes. It teaches you how to work with, not against, your body.

This book contains the following chapters: 1. A New Approach to Weight Loss 2. The Appetite System – an overview of the science behind your taste buds and digestion, introducing Dr McCarthy’s concept of the Appetite Pendulum. 3. The Psychology of Eating and Appetite 4. Stop Eating When You’re Full 5. Establish a New Routine 6. Tackle Your Saboteurs 7. Wait Until You’re Definitely Hungry 8. Stop Emotional Eating 9. Know What to Eat 10. Maintain Your New Weight.

Interesting. Well written and motivational.
The "Appetite Pendulum", which is key to the book, is VERY similar to the Hunger Discovery Scale from Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That Works, written 24 years ago. Dr McCarthy has simply changed the numbers on the scale and put in a picture of a pendulum. I like the change that was made, I think it makes it more relatable, but trademarking the phrase "Appetite Pendulum"? Really? Someone else thought of it first.

So apart from that, yes, great, good book. Makes a lot of sense and I feel better having read it.

Very helpful. I finally feel as though i have control over the chocolate and a healthy way forward! I have highlighted and shall return as i develop more habits.

This book talks about the psychology behind why we eat. We know what to eat, its the how, when, why that is addressed to help us not eat when we're not hungry. And use the times of mild hunger to loose weight.

Crystal clear explanation of how we need to tune back in to our appetite to get overeating under control. So many helpful strategies and so practical and logical. Great book that I’ll be using as a reference in my health coaching and in my life. Highly recommend as a self help book for weight management.
