He thought it was all a game… until he lost everything.
Tragedy has struck, and now Ian must try to reverse it.
Inside the virtual reality video game known as OtherWorld, he will recruit new allies… Play politics with a duchess and an emissary of the Church of Eternity… Square off against a trio of bounty hunters… Meet a vastly powerful dungeon core who can bend reality itself… And encounter the most frightening opponent he has ever faced.
But most important of all, he will risk EVERYTHING to save the woman he loves.
WARNING: This is a story featuring naked women, threesomes, demons, warlocks, violence, revenge, and moral quandaries. If you’re an old granny lady who’s going to clutch your pearls every time a woman’s breasts are described or somebody gets naked, this book is not for you.
This 5th instalment in A.J.Markam's Succubus series proved to be a fast paced and fun read. This is shaping up to be one of those weird series where every other book is good. So far all the odd numbered books have been a ton of fun while the even numbered books have been a bit of a disappointment. That does not bode well for the next book in the series but at least this book was a return to top form. This series is a blend of LitRPG and erotica so I'm prone to just calling books of this nature Litporn lol! Things can definitely get a little crazy in these books but on the whole this is not a story that takes itself too seriously so it is easy to get caught up in the mix of humour and LitRPG style action and adventure.
The story in this 5th book was a fun one. The start was a little dark as Ian had to react to the shock way things ended in the 4th book but that just meant that the story gripped from the first page. Things got a little intense but on the whole I think Markam played things to perfection and the situation even prompted some character growth in Ian and another of our favourite secondary characters. The rest of the action focused on a visit to another of Alaria's old masters. This one a high level Dungeon Core! It proved a fun visit as the Dungeon Core was a fun secondary character and Ian also found the time to get caught up in the local politics of the City that existed above the Dungeon and he had to fight off the latest wave of bounty hunters.
I liked the positive growth Ian showed in this one (even if he still can be a real ass at times!) and felt like the action was fun and the humour mostly hit its mark. One of the better things about this instalment was the fact that it was packed full of fun support characters. The Dungeon Core was the pick of the bunch but he was far from the only fun secondary character and I felt that was a needed improvement as that was a weakness of the last book in the series.
We did not get to see Ian spend any time in the real world and I still feel like that is wasting the potential for some fun story arcs but at least we got to see Ian spend some time with some other human players. I love the fact that Ian treats the VR world and characters of the story as if they are real but it can be fun to see him interact with other "real" people who are not as devoted to it as he is!
This series has a ton of flaws (It is probably not for you if you are easily offended, not tolerant of some crazy over the top happenings/humour, or...female!) but if you can overlook that then this is one of the better LitRPG series on the go as Markam has an engaging writing style and he has created a fun world packed with humour and fun characters.
All in all I felt like this was a fun read and a lot more enjoyable than the last book in the series.
Rating: 4 stars.
Audio Note: As always Iggy Toma gave a fantastic performance of the audio. He really gets the tone of the story and does fantastic with the characters voices. He really brings this series to life and I suspect he is so good that this would not be half so fun a series to actually read as it is to listen to. I'm really not sure why the guy is not a more popular narrator especially in the LitRPG genre!
Total guilty pleasure wish fulfilment that makes me chuckle.
World: The world is okay, it’s a play on World of Warcraft and the LitRPG aspect of it does appeal to me and make me smile. All the stereotypes are there both good and bad.
Story: A continuation of the story so far and it’s still what it is, male wish fulfilment that can be found in any number of video game, comic book, manga and anime. This is pretty much a male version of a harlequin romance novel. The sense of humour I will say makes me giggle but there’s little else there if you’re looking for depth.
Characters: Fun banter, cliched characters that fall into the male wish fulfilment archetypes. It does have it’s moments.
This book was really hard to get through. I've been reading the series and gradually getting more dissatisfied with the main protagonist. Ian is really too stupid to live. His character hasn't developed through the series. Insecure. A moron at times. The pacing of the story has become one ridiculous series of impossible situations after another that he escapes with the help of others and in spite of his own stupidity. I finally started flipping through chapters just to reach the end so I could put the book away and move on. I won't be continuing the series.
Crosses to Dungeon Core, Crazier then Ever Book starts with Alaria dead. Soraiya's attempt to transfer her spirit out of the robotic body back into her normal body failed, instead leaving Alaria's soul in a dungeon core crystal.
Orlo stays dead, which is great.
Luckily Alaria has a previous master who is a high-level dungeon core, who hopefully will be able to help return her to her body, which is in suspended animation.
Once again Ian becomes a horribly selfish and unbearable person when things with Alaria don't go his way. Irrationally blaming Soraiya and torturing her a variety ways for a good portion of the book. He is definitely a flawed character, to the point of unlikeable.
Stig is hilarious, with constant use of "That's what she said" without apparent knowledge of correct context.
Naming the new addition to the team, a gargoyle, Fugly seemed a little low-brow.
The new crop of bounty hunters trying to bring Ian back to pay his debts are pretty well written and add several near impossible situations and counter point to the longer game trying to get Alaria restored.
The elder dungeon core, Derek, is written as an extreme stereo-type / caricature, and always yells so is written in all caps. I find the whole combination abrasive and again too low-road for my preferences.
The duchess and the nuns made interesting diversions, with Alaria as dungeon crystal still playing a role and the whole situation with the vying political factions and the mis-understanding that Ian might be a dungeon inspector was pretty funny. Skulking around the palace at night unexpectedly bumping into people, etc.
The fifth entry in the fantasic Succubus series once again sees AJ pushing the plot away from the main story arc of the MC Ian and his titular demoness Alaria pursing her ex-masters. However unlike the third book in the series (which is honestly the only real stumbling block in the narrative), this story manages to keep Alaria in the mix while pushing the focus back onto our main character, and continues to pose interesting moral dilemmas to challenge the characters and reader. Moreover we are introduced to even more entertaining side characters in Ian's quest to resolve the main plot thread posed by the fourth installment's cliffhanger ending.
While not the best entry in the series this is still a fantastic read with some extremely steamy erotica to boot as always. Moreover, I'm just really happy that AJ found a way to divert from the main story without having to drop our beloved Alaria out of the narrative entirely. Definitely worth the read.
A.J.Markam has do a great job with the story I say this again he a skilled and Talented Author and I love this book series the characters are well written and informed the plot is awesome it's a must to buy and own it just amazing That what she said... If you get this you will understand this book and series the Author put you throw all of the emotions of the character great work A.J.MARKAM 12/10 Stars ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆•
I really like this series. The stories are interesting, continuing to go in unexpected directions, and often quite surprising. Dungeons in this MMORPG world have "cores" that are themselves AI's? Inside the game world? That's cool!
Even the erotica continues to entertain without becoming repetitive.
The story continues with the same quality as before. The author provides continual originality, imagination and exciting action sequences along with some humor, as well as varied and hot sex scenes. Providing a noteworthy foundation for the story is his characters' humanity and the love between the lead characters. Well worth reading, and I will continue on to the next sequel.
Another action (sex) packed read. Love the interplay with Stig and hope we see more of Dorp in the future. The MC is great and it’s good to see he’s not infallible and can make mistakes.
Overall well written and paced and some great characters. A great addition to the series and I think my favourite so far.
This is just another amazing adventure in the long story so far. Glad to see that the author didnt leave it on a major cliffhanger this time, though. Can't wait to see where this goes next.
I love A.J.'s style of humor and many of his characters remind me of my old gaming group when I was a kid. To those that like to compare to previous books ... this crap ain't a damn cookie cutter ... every book will always have it's own ups and downs!
Once sgain the author produces another funny and exciting chapter in this series. Never a dill moment, i always enjoy the movie ripoffs he puts in the book. Also the introduction of Fugly the gargoyle reminds me of mutley with wingd, hopefully he will come back!
The story was odd but very satisfying! I'd love to have the powers of a dungeon core! The scary creepiness factor for this novel was very high due to how the story progresses. Of course, I can't wait to read the next one!
As you can tell I don't discuss spoilers or even pretty much anything to do with the story,as not to spoil it for anyone, but I do say it is definitely worth the read.
A fun book for those who like litRPG, erotica and nerdy stuff (like references to fantasy, StarWars and other things nerdy). Not as good as the first two books.
Now this is one seriously mixed bag of awesome! It started with a devastating—and brilliant—cliffhanger that built a wicked adventure. Then...well...the middle draaaaaaagged with exposition. If I wasn’t a gamer I’d likely have stopped reading, but I am, so I ended up enjoying the backstage approach to the game elements. Then the third act hit so hard I couldn’t wait to see how it would end. Sex and laughs, then unholy nightmares unleashed amid mayhem? What a ride! I loved feeling the extremes of this story. Moving eagerly along...to Book 6!
