Brought up in a relatively small town in Hertfordshire, C F White managed to do what most other residents try to do and fail—leave.

She eventually settled for pie and mash, cockles and winkles and a bit of Knees Up Mother Brown to live in the East End of London; securing a job and creating a life, a home and a family.

She writes gritty British based stories about imperfect men falling in love against the odds and has been accused of sprinkling a bit of humour into them from time to time too.

The rare trilogy that didn't feel like a waste of time. It wasn't repetitive and each book picks up where the other left off. I think this was the most angsty of the three books. The MCs are openly in a relationship, but the pressure of being in an openly gay relationship for a popular musician and footballer proves to be challenging.

I love Jay and Seb.

Definitely the most angsty in the series so far, but the character growth and their acceptance of themselves was just so good.

Plus I always love an English book where they don't talk like a blue blood, just like us normal folk 😂

Come Back is a lovely coda to one of my favorite series, the District Line series. While this book could be read as a standalone, you’d only be reading a cute little book about a rockstar and a footballer. You’d be missing the growth from both of the characters and their relationships. In the first two books, we saw Sebastian as a troubled, bitter young man, taken advantage of by his father’s personal assistant, angry at the world, drowning in one-night stands and drinking, aware that he was at least half to blame for all his troubles. We saw their first meeting, Jay having to overcome what he thought he ought to be and his own struggle to be the person he wanted to be. We saw them fight for each other and for their own dreams, working through heartache and anger and betrayal until Jay was able to proudly state that he was gay and in love with Seb, and to see Seb finally able to accept that he was worthy of that love.

TBH I simply hated most of this book and was thinking about DNF it. Way before the injury Jay lost all his charm and I didn't understand how Seb could stand him, he looked like a coward, being out for what? literally hiding in the shadows, avoiding actual living.
I couldn't understand how such an "Out and proud" Seb was OK with that so I found myself not liking both MCs.
When finally Seb had enough, this was the point where I re candled the love, Yes I could see why Jay was feeling like he got slapped in the face but felt a slap was highly needed.
the last 20% felt like compensation for most of the book.

3/1/2021 - Relistening to the series because there’s a book 4!!!!

5/21/2020 - This is the final book* in the District Line trilogy and while it is a complete story on its own – you definitely need to read/listen to Kick Off & Break Through first.

Come Back starts out a little slower but in some respects I enjoyed the fact that the first half was low angst. We were able to enjoy Jay & Seb settling into their new normal as a cohabitating couple. About half way, things start to pick up and their relationship is threatened by career trajectory, media/public speculation, injury, a blast from the past, and family revelations.

At one point I was a little worried that “the big misunderstanding” was going to be predictable, but was pleasantly surprised by the direction C F White took our characters on during their journey. There are a lot of obstacles to overcome, but the angst isn’t repetitive or needlessly drawn out – which I loved.

There’s an adorable HEA for Jay & Seb as well as a lovely epilogue. Overall, this trilogy has been wonderful and I’m so glad to have listened.

*Update: White has written a full epilogue novella for the series entitled, Extra Time. It is amazing and a wonderful addition to the series.

Piers Ryman is a great narrator. He does Jay & Seb so well. His voice for Stephen continues to be spot-on smarmy (skin crawling listening to those parts). This is a big cast with a lot of male characters and Ryman gives them all a unique sound and personality. I look forward to more by him.

I received a free copy of this audiobook from the author and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

we are back for a third time things are hard still

Overall 5 out of 5 stars
Performance 4 out of 5 stars
Story 5 out of 5 stars

Did I get what I wanted? That would be the questions as I listened to each chapter unfurl and envision each scene as they played out. Would I say that I wanted more or expected more? That would be a soft maybe. The direction was more or less predictable but the layering of the events was a nice change. There was and is something about MM romances that make me almost stupidly walk-in to love and feel that it is so much the reality that I read in my romance stories or see on the big or little screen. I do know that they are the escape that I have come to realize is the world around us. District Line has been a series that took me away from the world and what we have going on in it today. I am hooked on these two and their fight to have that ever lasting, ever after, forever.

I loved Jay and Seb. I loved that Piers did a fantastic job. He carried his weight of giving me that something extra the narrator voice can and should add to the story. He was consistent throughout this read and the entire series.

Reasons I enjoyed this book:
Easy-to-read Entertaining Page-turner Realistic Wonderful characters

Disaster befalls Jay’s premier league football (soccer) career just as Seb’s rock music career begins to take off. A moving hurt / comfort story to round off the stunning District Line series. I loved this as much as the previous books, the characters feel real, the plot resolutions are hard-earned, and the emotional rollercoaster kept me hooked the whole time. I finished this book feeling utterly satisfied! 🎧 Piers Ryman does such justice to the story - his accents, pacing, and emotional realism were superb.

WOW WOW WOW WOW WOWWWWWWWWWW!
This, the 3rd book in the series, is pretty much like a mixture of a football match or new, up and coming band.
In the football match instant you get two halves plus half time. The first half is hellish for all, not knowing what us going to happen from one minute to the next, then you get the half time analysis where both teams analyse the first half, or, where Jay & Seb analyse their relationship and where to go next. Then we get the second half where both teams seem more focused and put together, or, where Seb & Jay finally realise what they have to do next!
In the aspects of a band, you see them start off as underdogs, having to win the fans over, and watch them mature, change, and realise what is really important, in the case of music, it's staying true to their roots, in the case of Jay & Seb, it's saying EFF YOU to the haters and being proud of who they are!
I absolutely, totally and utterly LOVED this book! Seeing Seb and Jay mature as they do, and accepting that not everybody is going to be accepting of them as a couple, was brilliant!
There were the inevitable highs and lows but, in the end, love won!!

Come Back brings the District Line series to a close. If you're familiar with the series, it follows the romance between Jay and Seb, and what a whirlwind it has been. This pair has certainly had their ups and downs, but they're both so darn lovable, faults and all, that I couldn't help but root for them. Those ups and downs continue with this one, and these two face more than their fair share of angst. The only real drawback for me is that I felt like the story was a bit too drawn out at times. Even so, by this point, I've become invested in this couple and had to see how things would play out for them. Some things I saw coming, and some I didn't, but my takeaway was that I still love Jay and Seb together, and I'm glad I got to know them. I loved their growth throughout this series, both as a couple and individually. Like the first two books in the series, this one is well-written, emotional, and filled with chemistry, both in and out of the bedroom. All in all, a solid conclusion to the series.

Audiobook review:
Overall: 5
Performance: 5
Story: 5

A great ending for the series.

Oh my! Parts of this story just tore me up; the things that Jay goes through are so awful. But love and perseverance finally triumph.

Jay takes a lot of flak for coming out and it causes him some major problems on the pitch. He gets injured and his football (soccer) career is in jeopardy. Seb and his band find success which results in some conflict between him and Jay.

There are trust issues between Seb and Jay in this one but they both finally open up to each other and make their relationship a priority. They each find professional success and get their romantic happy ending.

Piers Ryman's performance of this book, and the entire series, was really wonderful. I love the accents he uses and his delivery of C.F. White's words brought me to tears more than once. This is a series that I can highly recommend.

A complimentary copy of this audiobook was provided to me but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

I suppose I fit the definition of what Jay and Seb call 'a soppy git'. I find myself cheering our two protagonists along the trials they face as they go through the motions of life while cohabiting. The characters in this series never fail to move me, which has been a particular delight in the course of this story. I wept with joy when Jay makes a major decision, and the author succeeded at keeping me on edge in the build-up to that moment. I was much less impressed with the casual wrap-up of Seb's relationship with his father - we needed much more depth in the turning point scene written into this book. We needed to hear much more from Ann - I'd love to see her perspective in a future book. I adored the ending, which brings me around to recommending this book unconditionally for romance-lovers - though that might sound particularly sappy. Hats off to the author for this one.

I was pleasantly surprised at how emotional the narrator was, and though his narration went a long way into making this book that much more engaging and appealing to me.
I felt like their story was bound to have a turbulent ending, with Jay injured and depressed it seemed like the whole world was against them. And yet, they pulled through.
.I found the soccer side of the book interesting and realistic, and I usually don't really go for Sport Romance at all! I loved how all three books really took the reader on a journey and showed how far they came, and how much they grew.

To conclude, this entire series was a surprise, and the narrator I had doubts about at first because of odd pacing turned out to be a master at accents and emotions. I will say some accents were a bit hard to understand for me, but I credit it to authenticity.

This installment felt like it was mostly about coming out of the closet with elements after the shiny has worn off a new relationship. It does still hit all the right notes, and I'm sure the ending was seen as wildly romantic to some (I have second hand embarrassment about PDA, so I know it's just me - but it's my review, so... )

Overall a satisfying series and precisely what I was looking for at the time - pandemic distraction at it's finest :)

I didn’t like the first ⅓ of the book. Jay and Seb weren’t close at all and nothing really happened. Then the drama started, which I loved but I still felt there stayed so much distance between them. The sexy times were reduced to one time dammit!

A great finale to an awesome trilogy (an audio review)

When I first embarked upon the story of the entitled emerging rock star and the struggling footballer, I wasn’t quite sure what I was getting myself into. When the third book drew to a close, I know I’d found something special. Something with that extra awesomeness.

In some ways, the story is simple – two guys who bump into each other, discover each is gay, and move into a relationship. A few bumps, a few bruises, a broken leg, a move across the ocean, fame, and homophobia and voila, a series you have.

This book begins with Jay and Seb settling into life living together. This is Britain in the mid-2000’s, so we’re nowhere near legal marriage. That being said, the men are committed to each other. Their time apart has shown them that they are happier together. Are meant to be together.

But this is a C.F. White book so it can’t be all hearts and roses. And it isn’t because the men have barely resumed their new activities – Seb playing in the band and Jay back on the pitch – when Jay is taken out by a horrific injury. I mean, like, ouch. Devastating to say the least. Seb is there at every moment but a distance between them grows as Jay is running out of patience and pushing Seb away. It all comes to a head and it’s only with the intervention of their friends that both men finally pull their heads out of their asses.

But then if they’d communicated in the first place, the book probably wouldn’t have been as good. Had to add a little angst. And speaking of their friends – a few surprises in store that I did not see coming. All good, I promise.

In the end, I got my happy ending. Something I demand these days. I even got a special epilogue that made my heart sing. This is a great series and I wouldn’t hesitate to pick up any other C.F. White book. And I can’t finish without mentioning Piers Ryman. I have a thing for British accents and although I’m not so good at spotting upper class versus working class, Ryman had a distinctive voice for each character and it worked. The whole book just worked. So glad I listened.

As the third book in the series, this was the wrap up of the relationship between Sebastian and Jay.

Jay is taking some flak for coming out in the last year, as is his team. He and Seb have decided that they won't discuss their relationship to the public, but when Seb's band makes it to the big time, he has a live interview and can't help himself.

Honestly, this book didn't do much for me. I have to admit that I skimmed a lot in the first half. I was really searching for a plot line, but didn't really find one. It was more the ins and outs of regular life until the last 80% or so when I finally got what I was looking for. I feel like this could have been shortened to novella length and it would have read better.

The end was worth the read, as that was where the action was. The feelings were present, the story picked up, and I felt the love in my gut. This was definitely the HEA that I'd hoped for.

Oh Jay!

Book 3 brings the epic love story of Seb and Jay to a different level. Seb is well on his way to becoming a work famous rock star. Jay is becoming more famous by the moment, his football career soaring

When things are at their best, Jay finds himself injured. Unaccustomed to having physical limitations, Jay spirals. His depression and fear are a struggle for both men and their relationships is strained.

As always, the writing in this novel is beautiful. As someone who has had dance related injuries, I really could relate to the way Jay lost control of himself. The potential of losing something that is important to you, that is more than a career but something that defines who you are... it is life altering. White really captures the intensity of emotion and the challenge of fighting with not only an injury, but the strain it puts on mental health.

Great addition to the series

This seems like the wrap up for the series but there's a book 4 so I'm not sure what's gonna happen there.
Seb and Jay have a lot of angst in this book. Jay goes through a hard period of life where he doubts everything including his relationship with Seb. This takes a toll on Seb and the guy's experience a lot of heartache.
This one is not very spicy. I'm giving it 🌶1/5 chilies on the spicy scale.
The guys do get their long awaited HEA.

I listened to the audiobook, and it was great.

Again I both liked and didn't like this book its a long read that felt a bit like a hard slog but I am now invested in Jay and Seb and need to keep reading!

It just takes me a while to finish as I have been reading other books in between (which is rare for me) .

As per books 1 and 2, its got almost unnecessary plot points and the characters I want to tell to grow the f up.

Another five stars for this last part in the trilogy, even if at times I wanted to shake both Seb and Jay till their teeth rattled. Lack of communication x 100 here, but it sucked me right in and like the other two books I had trouble putting it down.

Come Back is the third book in The District Line series by CF White. We first met the men in Kick Off and Break Through. Now, Seb and Jay are together and both are out. Although, Jay is only out to some, not to the world.

I love the men together. They fought hard to be a couple, and they made sacrifices as well. They deserve to be together.

But, in this part of their story, they have to deal with homophobia, decisions to be public or not, injuries, penalties, and more. As well, Seb's music career is taking off, and the two are struggling to stay on the same page.

I appreciate the way both men struggle with being known for their talent versus their relationship. This aspect is written in a realistic manner. I find so much about their struggles to be realistic. It's definitely nothing far fetched, and I am thrilled to have followed these men and their journey.

As with the previous books, the writing is well done. The author definitely brings a unique English flair to their writing. It's not my usual preferred style, but it's still easy to read and enjoy. The storyline is intriguing throughout, with plenty of ups and downs to keep me riveted.

Overall, Come Back is a wonderful addition to The District Line series. This CF White series is one I highly recommend the next time you're in the mood for opposites attract. This one follows an athlete and a band member through their trials and tribulations.

Loved this third book in this series. The story of Jay and Seb has been building over the last two book and comes to a conclusion. At some points I was on the edge as my nerves were getting frayed.
The ups and downs, the angst all got to me at times. But there is romance, tears, pain and heart ache, but the end made me happy.
The narration was great as it was in the previous 2 books. Well worth the read/listen.
