so, obviously this is my new favorite book. maybe you already know all about juniper from the internet, but if you don’t, please acquaint yourself with her asap.

however, i do, on both sides of the camera. all the pictures appearing in this review were taken with my camera, little blue, from the book, so they are for illustration purposes only, and much better photographs can be found on juniper’s site(s) and in the book. or on my juniper wall calendar, but it’s already april, so too bad for you, but i’ll show you what you're missing this month:
i learned a lot of facts from this book, facts that led me to conclude that either 1) keeping a fox as a pet is an endeavor with many unexpected factors to consider and a decision that should not be made without understanding what’s going to happen to your home, your possessions and your routine, OR 2) that juniper is a very. naughty. fox.
i’m leaning toward the former, because wookit that face!
she could never be naughty, could she?
and yet, so much of this book sounds like the script from a horror movie:
Whenever we had guests, Juniper made a game out of hiding inside of the couch and jumping out from in between the cushions. She enjoyed their startled screams and would jump out repeatedly.
but, like, a really cute horror movie.
When I would reach down to pet her, she would yip happily and wag her tail as fast as she could before excitedly bolting out of the room. It was as if she couldn’t handle the joy radiating through her body and the only appropriate reaction was to run around screaming.
keeping a fox sounds a lot like keeping an adorably unhinged possible serial killer as a pet
much hoarding of food, including stuffing a fish filet underneath the rug:
Juniper had carefully removed the carpet from the tacks that held it to the floor, hidden her entire dinner underneath, and then placed the carpet back so perfectly that I didn’t notice the difference until I started to smell the putrid fish three days later.
which would have been a hard smell to notice beneath all that musky fox smell as juniper marked the entire place as "hers." also hers = that couch she liked to jump out of, which she had clawed large holes into, hollowing out a den which she lined comfortably with stolen, shredded socks, toys and more food. always more food. hoarder fox.
there is also an anecdote about her delightedly peeing on a dying wasp.
however, this page is the most troubling of all:
let’s hope juniper had the sense to pee on that.
if alla that doesn't convince you that you should maybe sleep with one eye open if you ever get a pet fox, there's this:
Her toy box is her favorite place to hoard treats. I once found a dog biscuit hidden inside a decapitated toy rabbit. It was sticking out almost as if she had purposefully replaced the rabbit’s head with a treat.

juniper is the good kind of crazy, and not just because she's irresistible. it is a fact that the greatest artists of their generations often come across a little different; they march to the beat of their own drum and all that, and it's what quckens their creativity - which is absolutely true of juniper. i mean, look at these endpapers!!

you can even buy juniper originals, when they’re not all sold out.
there’s a lot more text in here that is typical for books like these, and i really appreciated learning all about juniper and her pals, especially moose:
the malamud she loves and stalks who merely tolerates her in return, proving that even the most breathtakingly beautiful creatures still struggle with unrequited affections.

oh, and fig, who is another sweet fox baby for juniper to adore. but i'll let you discover that tale on your own. it is so awwwwww.

Saw this book in the store just now. Pure coincidence as I wasn‘t even looking for anything interesting in that section, I was simply on my way to the café. However, I love foxes and the quirky smile on the cover drew my eye immediately.
This is the story of little vixen Juniper who got rescued from a pelt farm. By now, the cute little fox with the lopsided smile is internet-famous (over 2 million followers on Instagram!) and she‘s selling paw paintings to raise money for her mother‘s animal shelter (more rescues followed after Juniper).
The story of how they found each other, how Juniper became part of the family and is now helping other animals, is balm for the soul and the cute and often extremely funny photographs are rounding off the cozy reading experience.

I have followed Juniper's Instagram for a while now. Whenever she pops up in my feed it warms my heart. So when I heard that her owner was writing a book I was super excited!
Firstly, the physical book is beautiful. The paw print paintings were a lovely addition. The images are gorgeous and as a photography hobbyist I was delighted.
The book itself covers Juniper's story, most animals that live with her, and Jessika's background in animal care as well as sanctuary dreams. It was a lovely read and I really enjoyed it. Learning more about Juniper and the other animals was fantastic.
The only problem I had with this book was the layout and transitions. I wish it had a chapter format with the quotes between them for a smoother transition. I found myself reading a sentence and then reading a quote in the middle before finishing it. It was a little jarring for me.
Overall, this book was lovely and I hope Jessika continues to write more. Supporting her sanctuary goals this way is awesome.

Jessika Coker is someone who I greatly admire. While it is easy to peruse the internet and look at cute pictures of exotic animals (i.e. hedgehogs, foxes, skunks, raccoons, etc.) Jessika has taken it upon herself to not only show the cute pictures, but also highlight the difficulties of sharing your life with such unusual animals. She has taken the time to answer questions people might have about foxes as pets, and even how they differ to wild foxes. She has never shied away from the negative aspects of owning the animals, but at the same time she also takes care to explain why some of their destructive behaviors exist.
She's exactly what we need in the world.
This book is a loving collection of pictures and anecdotes, the bulk of them revolving around the first year of Juniper's life. It's a short biography of sorts, an explanation as to the Why of Juniper as much of the What. Her behaviors and tendencies, the strange bond between her and Moose, and the eventual addition of Fig to the family. While not as in-depth as her instagram account and website, this is still a great book for the general overview that it gives. It's cute, while also not encouraging anyone to go out and get a fox for themselves.
Just what it needs to be.

A cute little book about a cute little fox. I learned a lot about foxes while enjoying all the cute pictures of Juniper: The Happiest Fox. I really liked the book and discovered that I would not want to own a fox. I would not know what I was doing and I would not be able to keep up with it.

I was searching for a new book to read and saw this one. I just had to have it because while I read a lot of books about cats (I am a cat lady) I never read one about rescued foxes.
It is a very fast read but it tells a lot about life of this adorable little fox and her friends in the sanctuary Jessica Coker opened. The book does a good job in teaching people more about foxes and also get them to start loving these animals. It was definitely fun to read about Juniper's personality and all the treat hiding as well as relationships with other animals in the house.
And the pictures of Juniper and the rest were a great part of the book! I just loved looking at them. So adorable, really looks happy all the time and brings a smile to one's face! After reading it I right away started following juniperfoxx on Instagram. Let her be my influencer :)

Fun, informative, and heartwarming
Since a fox was born under our deck last spring (she resides under the bushy bushes behind our fence as an adult), my interest in foxes has skyrocketed. They’re smart and so fun to watch.
Reading JUNIPER has cemented my love of foxes... The amazing thing is I can see how very difficult a fox can be to have as a pet. There are some parts in the book that are very clear about how hard it can be. But, the love is monumental. I was very moved reading about the bond between Juniper the fox and Jessika her human. I also laughed out loud about things like fox using her butt to show ownership and dinnerless humans. I hope the sanctuary dream has become a reality.
If you would like to feel like you live with a fox for just a few hours, read this book. Juniper (and Fig) will seem as if they are a part of your life.

This book did exactly what I wanted it to: it made me squeal with delight. It's adorable. It's a fluff piece, so to speak, but that's what we expect and want from it. Great pictures. Super cute story, but to be fair also an accurate message that you shouldn't take on a pet unless you're ready to totally commit to them and their wellbeing.

Everyone needs Juniper and Co. in their lives! This is an awesomely inspirational story that really opens your eyes to some of the major elements of animal cruelty. Major kudos to Jessika Coker for all the work she does with the animals she rescues, and in educating people about the needs of exotic animals.

Juniper: The Happiest Fox is a book about the author's relationship with her ranched(domestic) fox, the troubles she encounters with raising her, her solutions to these problems (some of which I don't agree with), the emotional journey they share and what this has ultimately led Jessika to realize about her life. As a result I feel that if there should be a follow-up it will be since of the refuge that she is proposing to make with some contributions to this book.
The book itself is a quick and easy read for readers while not only providing information about Jessika's household and how all the pieces came together but also in providing the reader with information about farmed foxes in general. This is strewn through with quotes that may be about foxes or just the emotions in general, which do interrupt the story, especially if the sentence has to run onto the next page thus I just got to the point where I finished the sentence before returning to the page before to get the quote.
For illustration the book does include a bunch of brightly colored photographs with not only Juniper but some other animal friends such as Moose and eventually Fig once he was introduced. To me it felt like a bunch of these photographs were staged and not taken naturally, which is a bit on the disappointing side.
All in all it was a decent book and one that I feel does a pretty good job explaining just how much an exotic pet can be a problem but also a blessing at the same time, which may encourage the wrong people. Otherwise if someone loves foxes or animal rescue stories this will be a nice break given to its quick read nature.

I just adore this book! I have been following Jessica and her snagglenation for quite some time now and I was overjoyed when I heard she published a book. It took me some time to find it but I finally found it.
When I opened this book I was suprised by Juniper's beautiful art. I have spent some time just looking at it, it's just super adorable.
This book tells the story of Juniper through the eyes of Jessica. She tells us how she and Juniper crossed paths, how Juniper grew up from an energenic little kit to the sassy lady we know now, how her obsession with Moose began, how Petunia and later on Peach came into her life, how Juniper needed Fig in her life and her future plans. I love how Jessica not only shows the fun side, but also the challenges you run into living with a fox. While realing, I realised she sure knows a lot about raising and taking care of exotic, and I admire her for that!
The book was easy to follow and the various pictures of Juniper made me smile from ear to ear, she's the cutest, most adorable little creature and I can't wait to see and hear more about their adventures ^^

I love a good animal story - especially one with beautiful pictures to go along with it and Juniper does not disappoint. Jessika Coker always loved animals and even worked in animal sanctuaries. Because of how foxes are bred for fur if any are rescued from a fur farm they cannot go back into the wild because they are too tame and too removed from their original wildness. When Coker has the opportunity to adopt a fox kit she jumps on the chance. Juniper is the runt of the litter and instantly bonds with Coker and her dog Moose. Foxes are incredibly smart and Coker was always on her toes trying to fox-proof her house. While Juniper's story is (hopefully) far from over maybe there will be a sequel in the future. This was a very quick read - I read it in under an hour - with LOTS of beautiful photos of Juniper and Moose and Fig, a new fox addition at the end of the book. Definitely a great book to make you smile and learn more about foxes as well.

A very sweet and inspiring story about a young artist who raises and loves a fox named Juniper. She describes the upside and downside of living with a wild/tamed fox. The pictures are wonderful, how much personality that fox has! Another reviewer stated that she didn't like the placement of the pictures and quotes - that they interrupted the story somewhat. I agree, the pictures were my favorite part of the book and I always love quotes, but the placement on many of them was awkward. I absolutely adored the end pages - Juniper's paw print paintings! And I love that she is using the profits from selling the paintings to establish an exotic animal sanctuary. A quick read that animal lovers won't want to miss!

This is a lovely book that chronicles the author's ownership of/by a tame fox. Tame foxes are ones that have been raised for generations for the fur trade and are not capable of surviving in the wild. Coker, through prior experience raising and releasing a litter of wild fox kits whose mother was hit by a car, was notified of a litter of foxes from a fur farm that were being adopted out. She took the runt, a snaggle-toothed female that she named Juniper. The book is beautifully laid out with many color photos of Juniper and her best dog friend, Moose. Part of the proceeds from the book are going to help fund the author's plans to expand her ability to rescue exotic animals that cannot be returned to the wild.

cute book, great story and message, but terrible editing. who proofread and edited this? i found at least three like, really glaring grammatical errors including a change of tense at one point, and this is in a book that is very short all things considered. i read the entire thing easily in one sitting, probably took me 30 minutes, and that included ooing and aaing at the cute pictures.
additionally, the formatting....was a bit of a mess? nearly every time there was a page with text, the text would get cut off mid-sentence and even MID-WORD with a two-page block of photos. i loved the photos! they were wonderful, and should be included! however, you would think a professional publishing company could've formatted the writing and photos a lot better and more seamlessly.

Other than this book being absolutely adorable and sweet, I love it because it helps inform people about owning exotic or semi-wild animals. I see so many people now-a-days adopting more "unconventional" house pets like foxes, farm animals that should not be kept indoors 24/7, deer, owls, etc. A lot of people do not do the research to find out how these special animals need to be cared for, and that just makes a bad life for the animal and is not fair. This book should help open some eyes as to the importance of actually knowing how to and having the ability to care for exotic animals. Splendid pictures, lovely story, and wonderful paper liner featuring the paw artwork :)

This book was easy to read, but I was expecting more of the Instagram posts. Real life with a wild animal, how to care (and not care) for a fox, the backstory of both Juniper, Fig, Moose and Jessika. But overall got a nice description of the bond between Jessika and Juni and how painting became a thing.
The best part is definitely the pictures, and the fact that proceeds from the book go to funds to establish a wild animal refuge.

March 30, 2025This was a good companion book to read with Pax by Sara Pennypacker. It has wonderful photos and a sweet story of an adopted fox named Juniper. I'm not sure why Juniper wasn't released into the wild at some point... I need to go back and see where/if that was explained. However, she seems to have been a perfect match for the author, Jessika Coker. Foxes are not meant to be pets and sound like they are definitely tougher than raising a boxer puppy (based on my experience), but now I kind of want one... :)
This is what I'd call a coffee table book because it has a lot of photos. There is a decent amount of text, but it could easily be read in one sitting!

I was so excited to see this in the mail today. I’ve followed Jessika, Moose, Juniper, Fig and the rest of Snagglenation for months now and have always been in awe of them. Juniper, who is truly one of the most beautiful creatures I’ve ever seen, has been the highlight of many of my days. This book detailing her and Jessika finding each other was truly inspiring and now more than ever I want to share her story and support Jessika and the work she is trying to do. Highly recommended, as is everything that has to do with Juniper and her friends.

Not only charming, but Jessica Coker provides readers with an education about foxes and what it takes to be an animal sanctuary. What a great book that I think will help people understand why these beautiful animals are not meant to be pets. Hopefully this book will help people respect the wild and drum up interest in taking part in preserving and protecting all our beautiful critters that share this earth with us. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will continue to look through this book to enjoy the beautiful photography too. I’ll be giving a few copies as gifts as well.

Juniper is an adopted fox as a pet and she has many fun and adventurous surprises up her sleeve.She has been a pet fox for several generations. She loves her pet dog Moose a Malamute mix. She hollowed out the couch as a den.I do not advise a fox or other creature whom was meant to be wild as a pet.They bite, They stink, and they pee on everything.But to look at this book is relaxing.The author lives by a woods and takes JUniper on walks every day and she has started an exotic animal foundation to care for exotic pets that people no longer want. So Juniper will have many friends.

Very sweet story. I love foxes, but raising one as a pet sounds chaotic and stanky. However I’m still sad about the fox baby I caught and then panicked and released. Lil Juniper came from a fur farm and I didn’t realise that kind of captivity and exposure to humans semi-domesticated them, although they have such strong instinctive behaviours. The angsty, withdrawn adolescent stage (around the age they separate from their parents) was bittersweet; the false pregnancy was heartbreaking. Lucky her mama was so resourceful and she got to rescue another baby in turn. Actually heartwarming!

I follow Jessika's Instagrams for Juniper and Moose, so I was thrilled to get my pre-ordered copy of "Juniper: The Happiest Fox" in the mail yesterday. What a lovely story of how Jessika has come to work with exotic animals, and her love for all that she cares for, especially Juniper. I have a soft place in my heart for foxes too, because they remind me of my dad. He absolutely loved them. Thank you Jessika for all you do for so many animals and thank you for sharing your journey with us!

The fox is my favorite animal. I've dreamed of having one as a pet, and the research I had previously done led me to believe it would be a bad idea. After reading this book, I am positive it would be a very bad idea. It's a sweet little book, and the author and her fox seem to be happy together, but I for one would be afraid to go in their house to see the filthy condition it must be in. I am cured of my need to own one.

I adored reading every tale about this incredibly big-hearted author/activist/animal lover and her equally enchanting fox/friend, Juniper. Every page imbued kindness, compassion and a love of such magnitude that it brought out the best in both Jessika and her animal rescues, as well as her many followers online. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever cared for another living creature :)
