This anthology of stories, essays, and poems on "growing older," dedicated to a special woman in honor of her 90th birthday, turns out to be more than the sum of its parts! Many of the writings in this collection are by Jessie Collins, the honored birthday girl, who entered every monthly writing contest sponsored by Writers' Mill in 2018-- and more. Interspersed with her stories and essays are entries by Writers' Mill authors, many submitted to the group's "growing older" themed contest.

After reading the entire book, I know more about the life and times of Jessie Collins, from her girlhood in England during WWII, through happy memories, and on to widowhood, her zest for life intact. The book turned out to be a mini-memoir of Jessie, whether or not her editor daughter intended that to be the case.

The other writings about aging, memories, and life, are frosting on the cake. Included in the anthology are an entire section of poetry, humorous stories (my favorites are about an old computer and one about an old dog that portends sadness but is actually funny. Is that a spoiler?), and many wonderful stories reflective of life and aging. I laughed, almost cried.

Yes, I have one story in the mix--about an 8 year old girl growing older by the minute. But the lion's share of credit goes to Jessie Collins, Sheila Deeth, and Writers' Mill as a group.
