It was hard for me to give this book 3 stars. I wanted to give to 2, but it was rather entertaining and quick to read, so I'm being nice and gave it 3. Honestly, this book kind of scared me a little bit. It is comprised of 3 short stories, the first one being the longest (and the scariest). Gage is a rebel spy who got captured. Originally, I thought it was some kind of dystopian world, but later I guessed it was some kind of historical place, since there were carriages or something. Whatever, I was confused. Anyway, he's supposed to be interrogated and the guy who is supposed to do it, just rapes him a lot and lets guards use him too. And then we find out Radek has done this to other prisoners too, but Gage was the only one who got turned on. I guess it was supposed to be all sub/dom stuff, but it straight-up freaked me out at some points. Plus the guy never really interrogates Gage anyway. Could Sparrow have gotten into the political happenings of the world too? Like Gage could have been smuggling something cool across the border or something to aid the rebels. Anyway, the rebels win and Radek up and leaves. So the good guys rescue Gage where Radek just left him trapped in prison. The next chapter flashes forward to a year later and Gage is depressed because he liked being raped by Radek, which made no sense to me. Obviously, this is not my genre. So Radek hunts him down and they have consensual sub/dom sex, and with other people occasionally. This upsets Gage. I have no problem with consensual sex, it was just the raping parts where I got rather sick. The whole epilogue to overly happy and Radek has somehow changed his behaviors for Gage. And the random love interest just thrown in there for the hell of it, James, was tossed out. Like all romance stories, there was some major cheese:
"Intuitively, Gage knew this was more than a kiss: it was a seal, a pledge, a chain. It would be years before the young man realized the full meaning of the promise in that kiss." That made me laugh.
Also a lot of the language was way too dramatic to the point of silliness. Gage also accepts the "limits of their relationship," meaning he's not happy with how Radek treats him and lends him out to other people, and he accepts it. I took serious offense at that. And the love interest, James was described as russet-haired (red, for those of you not in the know), then russet-blonde, then just blonde. Consistency, please. So this story had it's flaws, but something about made me have to finish the whole thing.
The next story in the book is "Backstage Pass." A supremely whiny boy goes to a rock concert with his friend and whines the whole time. He finds the guitarist of the band to be very sexy and then they meet backstage and have sex. Since this one was not rape, it was okay for me. But the whole time I'm thinking: "A guitarist! You are having unprotected sex with a guitarist! You will get AIDS!" I need to take things less seriously. Fiction is not real life.
The last story was "The Way Out." It made me feel all gloomy. It was about a male prostitute struggling to leave his place in life, being depressed and having depressed lovers. Dollup of sunshine right there. So Dylan (we don't find out his name until the end, it's all a memoir in the first person) sees an ex-client, Malcolm. He remembers meeting Malcolm and having sex with him. Malcolm falls in love with Dylan, but Dylan doesn't love him back and has a boyfriend named Evan. For no apparent reason, Dylan gets all depressed, then Evan moves out, hoping to get a better life and hoping Dylan will follow him. Dylan does, Malcolm is sad that Dylan didn't pick him. The end. I felt sad.
So none of these stories were really that good, but it made you want to find out what was going to happen, so I'm being generous and am giving it 3 stars. Plus I didn't like it in part because sub/dom isn't my genre, like I said before, and I generally disagree with a lot of the themes associated with that type of book, so even if it was amazingly written, I probably wouldn't have liked it, so I can't hate the book because I simply hate the genre. But I'm trying to expand my tastes when it comes to books, so I read it.
I had initially thought this was an erotica story, but it turned out to be a romance (in a very dark and twisted kind of way). I was a little worried at first, not sure if I was going to like it or not, but quickly found myself intrigued by the characters and completely absorbed in the story and their strange relationship. Towards the end I was actually rooting for them to stay together, which really surprised me!
The story did have some flaws, but despite that, I was really enjoying it. But... the ending/epilogue completely ruined it for me. Not only was it sad and tragic, it also felt completely out of character (for Gage) and clashed horribly with the overall tone of the story. It felt very much like the author ran out of ideas (or got bored) and just tacked it on at the end, at a later date.
Very disappointing, because if it wasn't for the ending, I would have given this one a much higher rating.
Captive is a story that really starts out in your face when the main character ends up in an unfamiliar place only to be tortured and pleasured by the man who's holding him captive. I loved the dom/sub themes and the complexity of the character's relationship with the man who has taken him hostage! The story shows that love comes in unlikely forms, sometimes lasting, and sometimes falling short. I also liked the themes of war and resistance because it set a good backdrop for the main characters.
The new epilogue addresses how Gage deals with the power issues in his relationship with his lover, and coming to terms with the things that haunted him in the past.
Dark and sexy and angsty- what's there not to like? Just wish it was longer! Not sure why the other reviewer didn't like the end - I thought it wrapped up nicely, but maybe they just didn't care for slight the twist at the end? Anyway, highly recommend as a dark msexy story!
This is an odd little story, very short and sort of...brittle. One wrong word and it could have fallen apart. It held together enough to enjoy it, though.
I certainly wouldn't turn down more of this world.
