What would it take to make you ditch your career, your pride, and run from everything you believe in? In private investigator Ashe Devon's case, it's the fact that her client ended up dead while under her protection. Out of the P.I. business, Ashe is just trying to survive the daily grind of her boring, vanilla life when her former boss calls her out of retirement for one last job: protect a local DJ from a violent stalker. Ashe is fully prepared to turn down the case until she meets the client.
Mystral Galbraith, aka Phoenix, is unashamedly gay, just a tad awkward and musically brilliant. Ashe is instantly captivated by her and can't ignore the fierce young woman's plea for help. Neither can Ashe ignore the stirrings of long-forgotten emotions that set both her heart and her boxer briefs on fire. While Ashe struggles to keep her relationship with Mystral professional, the tension between them simmers just beneath the surface.
More than Ashe's pride is involved--failure could cost Mystral her life. But is Ashe the right person for the job? If she doesn't get her hormones under control, the undeniable pull between them could compromise her judgment and open the door for history to repeat its tragic lesson.
Mildred Gail Digby's favorite thing to do is add women-loving-women to any situation and make a novel about it. She will squeeze a happy ending out of anything and still blushes when she writes love scenes.
What can I say? I'm a sucker for the whole 'bodyguard' scenario where lots of danger lurks, and it creates forced proximity for the two protagonists along with heighten emotion and action.
Mistral (28) is a fire-haired Musical DJ professionally named Phoenix, who is out and proud and on the circuit to do music for a lot of pride and queer related events. She vivacious and funny, flirty and adorably nerdy, too. She is being stalked and harassed by an unknown assailant that is increasing in ferocity, so she requires assistance.
Enter Ashe, (40) the former PI who gave it up six months ago when a lady she was meant to protect ended up dead, through no fault of hers. But Ashe feels guilt. Even before that terrible circumstance six months ago she had lead a closed off, demure life without much fun or lightness in it. So when Phoenix comes along with her brightness it lights her up in ways that has her both wanting to embrace it but also putting up her guard.
This is a very slow burn romance. The push pull is there but not forced or angsty. It's realistic and understandable. The slowness and also the dealing with the everyday slice of life things, and the minutia is good because we really get to know each character and their personalities. However I can understand how some people may find that boring. But to me it felt very real.
These ladies are so very different from each other, yet somehow you just know they would be perfectly paired. Their attraction is sizzling hot below the surface, and so many times I just wanted to yell at my Kindle JUST KISS ALREADY! lol! But when they do it's magic!
A really well written emotive tale that surprised me with it's depth.
This was so bloody good. I'm so glad I listened to AnnMaree and bought it.
I like the bodyguard scenario too, and how fun would it be to guard someone like Mystral? I love her. Ashe was great in her own right, but I did get annoyed from time to time with her hot and cold treatment of Mystral. She kicks arse though, so I liked that.
And I really liked this book, so go get it so you can finally like it too.
Ashe Devon is a private investigator, and not a good one--maybe--because her client ended up dead. Not a very auspicious omen at all. She's out of the biz, but her old boss asks her to take a case--protection Mystral Galbraith (AKA Phoenix) a DJ, from a stalker.
Ashe takes the case, and finds out she's just as much into Phoenix as she is into getting justice. I won't get into the details, but the action is there--well done, I might add--and the narrative is solid.
What I liked most were the characters. As a guy, you'd think I wouldn't be interested in two gay ladies finding each other, but this kind of novel transcends orientation, as it was two people finding each other. All the principals were sharply defined, the action flowed nicely, the dialogue was good, and the story was just long enough to hold my attention.
Only one minor nitpick...the paragraphs in the PDF version I got could have been separated better. Other than that, a fascinating read.
Highly recommended for those into action and romance.
This was a really entertaining read with an intriguing plot and a compelling protagonist. Ashe actually reminded me a bit of Casey Duncan from Kelley Armstrong's Rockton series. Mystral was seriously endearing and the rest of the secondary characters were delightful. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and believe that it is seriously underrated.
This is an excellent read. It has a lot of action and enough slow burn romance. Ashe is a complete badass. I kinda want to be her... Great book, especially for a debut novel.
