Called "the New Testament on a string of beads," the Rosary is presented by famed Mariologist Fr. Donald Calloway, MIC, in all its wonder: leading armies into battle; defeating the enemies of Christ and His Church; and transforming hearts and minds in order to save societies and entire civilizations. After exploring the 10 Wonders of the Rosary, you'll never look at this timeless and powerful devotion the same way again.
Fr. Donald Calloway, MIC, a convert to Catholicism, is a member of the Congregation of Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception.
Before his conversion to Catholicism, he was a high school dropout who had been kicked out of a foreign country, institutionalized twice, and thrown in jail multiple times. After his radical conversion he earned a B.A. in Philosophy and Theology from the Franciscan University of Steubenville, M.Div. and S.T.B. degrees from the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, DC, and an S.T.L. in Mariology from the International Marian Research Institute in Dayton, Ohio.
Excellent book. Anyone who’s interested/wants to learn more about the rosary, should read this book. Being a cradle catholic, I was always told the rosary should be prayed but no one told me how/why I should. I just assumed that the rosary was for old ladies (my Nan included!) to pray quietly after mass. I was dead wrong. Father Calloway shows that the rosary is one of the most powerful weapons we can wield in our own spiritual battles on an everyday basis.
While reading about all the battles and points in history where major changes have happened due to people coming together to pray the rosary, I couldn't help but think of when statues were being torn down in 2020. There was a push to take down the statue of St. Louis IX (Forest Park, St. Louis, MO) so local Catholics banded together and held rosary vigils around the statue day after day, and what happened? St. Louis IX still stands at the top of Art Hill and the effort to have it removed fizzled out.
"It is not the wisdom of men that will heal our world. Man-made peace treaties are always temporary; such accords only offer a bandaid to a spiritual problem. What offers true and lasting peace are the saving mysteries of Jesus Christ. Jesus himself tells us in the Gospel of John, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you" (Jn 14:27)."
"No normal mind yet has been overcome by worries or fears who was faithful to the rosary. You will be surprised how you can climb out of your worries, bead by bead, up to the very throne of the Heart of Love itself." (Venerable Fulton J. Sheen)
"The Most Holy Virgin, in these last times in which we live, has given a new efficacy to the recitation of the rosary to such an extent that there is no problem, no matter how difficult it is, whether temporal or above all spiritual, in the personal life of each one of us, of our families ... that cannot be solved by the rosary. There is no problem, I tell you, no matter how difficult it is, that we cannot revolve by the prayer of the holy rosary." (Sister Lucia Dos Santos who spoke to Our Lady face-to-face)
Simple but awesome book on the rosary. Full of great history and meaning behind the rosary, along with stories and miracles attributed to Our Lady and her weapon against evil. Check it out!
Having held held the Rosary as my go to prayer for many many years this book has shown me a whole new dimension to an already powerful, beautiful, spiritual, soul repairing prayer. Thank you so much Father Calloway for your clear devotion to this most holy of prayers and for sharing these wonders with the world. 🙏🏻
Great book for the cradle and all Catholics! I begin to understand better even though I have been praying the rosary for about three years, with this knowledge and ten great wonder stories (there are more than ten, but it's worth knowing). Highly encourage to read and share.
Great priest/author. See his story on Youtube etc also. Great synopsis of a small slice of what Mary has accomplished. What is an indulgenced prayer? - Chapter 10 is for you. e.g. Page 126 "Fulfilling the order of justice is also how the saving mission of Jesus Christ works. Through the Life, Death, and Resurrection of our Savior, we are forgiven for the stuff we broke. The forgiveness is given to us through the Catholic Church, the Mystical Body of Christ, which extends to us the absolute certainty of God's forgiveness through the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession)."
Refresh your soul and expand your knowledge of the Rosary with this beautiful book by Fr. Calloway. His writing style is engaging and inspirational. His passion for the subject shines through on every page. Highly recommended.
Absolutely fascinating book about the wonders of the rosary with historical examples in each chapter. I highly recommend this book. I’m glad my dad bought it for me.
I read this book with a group. I find the casual writing od Fr Calloway tiresome and not very inspiring. There are many books about the rosary that a much better than this one.
I acquired this book as a freebie from my church's vestibule, and it taught me more than I ever knew I did not know about the Rosary. It strikes me that I never really wondered much before about the Rosary's origins and history. I knew I did not pray the Rosary enough before, and the book made me feel like even more of a delinquent. The Rosary is so powerful, as exhibited in the stories of medieval wars won and a murder averted. I believe Father Calloway highlighted many great aspects of the Rosary for Catholics and non-Catholics to appreciate. In addition to the information about the Rosary itself, I also found Father's personal history interesting at the back of the book when I finished reading. There is not much detail given, but it sounds like his story in becoming a priest would be an engaging read as well.
This book is a must read for every Catholic as well as readers interested in history of Christian devotions. Father Calloway presents his list of "10 Wonders" associated with Mary the Mother of Jesus and devotion over centuries to praying the rosary. As a 50ish "cradle" Catholic educated in everything from Biblical studies, archaeology and classical antiquities, stories of saints and Catholic history, I found this to be a true treasure trove of things I had some knowledge of to many new discoveries of people, places and events I want to do further research on As someone with moderate attention issues who has always struggled to focus when praying the rosary while reading this book, with the intercession of Blessed Bartolo Longo (who has a fascinating story in this book), I experienced the power of the rosary firsthand as a spiritual weapon against darkness.
Inspiring, I sat down and read it in about 3 hours, give or take. Usually, I read a book in several sittings over a period of days. Fr. Calloway is extremely knowledgeable about the rosary and how this means of prayer works. He sights saints, popes, and scholars. For me the real excitement was the real life examples and evidence of how prayers are answered by praying the rosary. Fr. Calloway’s books are usually interesting and well written. This book exceeds the other books he’s written that I have read. I have not read them all.
This book was fantastic. It is filled with so many interesting ideas, stories, and quotes that make it impossible to not believe in the power of the rosary. My only complaint is that it was too short. Other than that, it is highly recommended!
