As a self-proclaimed hater of poetry, I was leery about reading this book of, well, poetry. I am an avid reader and will read anything except poetry because I cannot find poems that I understand or that speak to me. After reading An Ode, I fully understand how people love poetry and how it can speak to them. I now know that I don't hate poetry; I just never found the poetry that spoke to me. Now I have. Every single poem in this book reminds me of some time in my life in some relationship. Reading some of these poems reminded me of situations in past relationships that I completely forgot about. As an example, the poem "Fit" (my absolute favorite), reminded me of my college sweetheart. I am now happily married and haven't thought about him in years, but reading that poem brought me right back to when that relationship ended. I never thought that reading a poem could touch me so much. I HIGHLY recommend this book.

I read this in bed before going to sleep one night and really enjoyed it. I found either myself or someone I know in every single poem. It was like someone was telling their stories and my stories, but on a much deeper level. The author captured so much emotion in each line. I love words, and I love pondering the deeper meaning of words and these poems allowed me to do that. It was truly a relaxing and enjoyable read.

I saw myself...

Even when it was too hard to. Hamilton’s poetry made me confront the most cringey parts of myself in past relationships. And it felt good to know that I wasn’t alone.
