“How do you stop that which mankind has reveled in for thousands of years? If you want peace, prepare for war...”
“Hot peppers and glittering sun bells!”This is the first time I read Nathaniel Sullivan’s work and am wonderfully gratified with the result! The Book of Marr is an exceptional moral and philosophical book, by which Nandor the protagonist guides and lives his life. Edgy, action-packed, and plotted with nail-biting tension. The author expertly fuses nonstop action and adventure; a cutting-edge, exceptionally inventive setting; and a terrific, take-charge, no-nonsense hero.
An intricate plot woven around a potential and grim nightmare of a war between clockwork cities. A compelling, thought provoking story, full of moral, good/evil ethics. I sure am going to follow the series! High recommendation. I received an early version of this book from the publisher and my review is entirely voluntary.

The Clockwork War is an enthralling first installment in the Morphic Ice series. It’s an adventure story that follows a nomad on a journey to find the secrets of Marr, a prophecy, and his sidekick who a young female mystic training. The two make an unlikely duo, but both learn to work together in order to survive on the journey.

I love a good fantasy book and this one had me hooked from the very beginning! I liked the combination of magic, steampunk technology, and fantasy world that mirrors some of the social issues that are happening in today’s society. Though its fiction, I thought it was very insightful at times and has a powerful message of working hard for what you believe in. The world building was excellent, and there was much attention to detail making the reading experience very immersive.

There were many twists and turns along the way and I the action scenes added to the entertainment factor. I enjoyed many of the characters in the book and even the villains too because they had a lot of depth to them. The main leads have deep backstory and watching them develop and grow over the course of the story made me root for them even more.

For those that might be sensitive to it, there is quite a bit of violence in this story. But if you like a good epic fantasy tale, I recommend this book!

Nathaniel Sullivan’s Morphic Ice 1. The Clockwork War is an intriguing, fast moving fantasy novel that that packs a punch. Interesting and divergent characters include the ‘hero’, Nandor – a prophet of Marr, a spiritual nomad, a complex visionary in search of peace. Nixie, his out-of-depth and unsuspecting partner and mystic complements him perfectly. Others include Dorin, the automaton; Cajourn, the healer; Eermont, the homeless, rambling guy; Benjfrost, the cynic; the goblin, Yelpik. All these, and more, are original and add significantly to the narrative. The story itself is about war (‘human nature is war’) and the quest for peace, about tradition and faith, folklore and courage. It’s a quest: will Nandor be able to stop the war that threatens the three cities or has it all gone too far? A great story, gripping throughout, with genuinely surprising episodes punctuating the whole. Despite the unfortunate and surely avoidable typos throughout, it’s a book with wisdom from the legendary character of Marr (‘revolution: minds change things, not violence’) and plenty to ponder. It’s a tale well worth reading.

This was a little different from what I normally read. (No Dragons, rescuing princesses, saving the kingdom [well, maybe some of that], or spaceships headed out into the universe to fight for what's right and the Space Corps way!). But it was an interesting twist on life as we don't know it. A nomad, Nandor searches out for what his god directs and uses his enlightenment in standing up for those that need it or don't even know their own place in this world. His god given powers and faith are shaken by revelations of what he finds and his friendship with other beings are threatened by misunderstandings with what he was taught and observed after he left the Academy. His steadfastness in the teaching of Marr, leads him on several paths trying to stop an eminent war between different icebound cities surrounding a newly appearance of a forest and what that represents to these three cities. (Yeah, it just appeared. You'll have to read this book to understand this part, too intriguing to spell it out.)

Overall I enjoyed this first book in the Morphic Ice series. The main character, Nandor, was well done and I enjoyed the little bits of his backstory that were added in throughout the book. In the beginning he seems like just the person to solve the issues when the green forest appears, and you feel for him with everything he goes through on his quest to find the great palace of the prophet Marr.
I really liked the character of Nix, Marr's companion. I hope in future books that we see more of Nix.
It took a little while to fully get into this book, which is not uncommon for books in the genre. My only negative comment is that there were certain small details that I would have liked elaborated on, like the mechanics and the clockwork, and I am hoping that there is more in the next book.

Great fantasy novel

This reminded me so much of I enjoyed fantasy growing up. First, the world created by this author was fantastic and well developed and rich. Nandor, the main character was very likeable and proved to be a character I enjoyed reading every step of the way way. There was some humor sprinkled throughout as well as quite a lot of adventure. An absolutely exciting read and one that I would highly recommend to fantasy novel fans. I look forward to the next installment!

This book was well developed. I enjoyed reading the story and liked all the characters. Each character brought their own personality to the story. The Jack Bot and the dog added both humor and further showed the nature of Nandor. Nandor is a man of faith. He is a gruff person who makes others feel important. Therefore people want to be around him. He is a profit of Marr. During this story he learns a lot more about his Marr. I received an ARC copy of this book.

Stop the clockwork war!

How can one group of seemingly different characters find understanding in such a chaotic world. A magician a screw crazy robot a kid with a lot to learn and peril at every corner. This book is fun and entertaining they should make a movie after the heros !!! I liked the book and I'm sure you will too!

Excellent story, but PLEASE hire an editor specifically for homonyms. A few I remember: Poll = survey; pole = stick. Your = belongs to you; you're = you are. Too = also or more; to = toward or until. Passed = went by; past = in times before. There were more. This story is far too good for these errors.

This might be a good story. It's too difficult to plow through all of the writing errors to find it. This desperately needs proof reading/editing!

Received as an ARC, this is an honest review. This is an impressive story, not only have intelligent, funny, irritating characters but the story was well thought out. Can a single person stop a war from coming, this is Nandor's struggle to convince the leaders of the clockwork cities that war over a forest is stupid. A powerful, thought provoking journey and is only the beginning of what will an excellent series.

Morphic Ice 1 The Clockwork Wars is a well developed fantasy novel with a clever take on war over a piece of land and its untapped resources. The reader follows Nandor, a leader and mystic searching for peace, through this action packed narrative as Nandor tries to impress upon the wintery icebound Clockworks cities to share this new forest that has suddenly appeared and to avoid going to war. Its fast pace and descriptive landscape make for a great read.
