When a rising country star is found dead in the Missouri Ozarks, sheriff's detective Katrina “Hurricane” Williams must confront the possibility that the man she loves is involved… Called to investigate the theft of valuable timber, Katrina finds the dead body of young singer Sharon Rose lying in the snow, shot execution style. When Sheriff Billy Blevins arrives at the crime scene, his strong reaction to seeing the victim is as baffling as a pretty corpse surrounded by tree stumps …
Until Katrina learns that Billy was involved with Rose. The sheriff's refusal to confide in her, coupled with his erratic behavior, not only puts a strain on their already complicated relationship, it hobbles her homicide investigation. With Billy going rogue, Katrina can’t rely on anyone but herself. Secrets and suspects abound, even in the singer’s own family, and the key to the murder may lie in the lyrics of what is now her swan song …
Praise for Robert E. Dunn “This tale of deceit, corruption and betrayal from Dunn is long on violent action … Fans of Clint Eastwood’s spaghetti westerns will find a lot to like.” —Publishers Weekly on Dead Man’s Badge
"Brutal, vivid, and unforgettable … a modern-day western morality tale in crime-novel wrapping with a blood-red bow. This one will haunt you." —Lee Goldberg, #1 New York Times bestselling author, on Dead Man’s Badge “This is hardboiled fiction at its best. We’re talking Elmore Leonard territory. A fantastic read and I hope there’s more to come.” —Hunter Sheaon A Living Grave
I wasn't born in a log cabin but the station wagon did have wood on the side. It was broken down on the approach road into Ft. Rucker, Alabama in the kind of rain that would have made a Biblical author jealous. You never saw a tornado in the Old Testament did you? As omens of a coming life go, mine was full of portent if not exactly glad tidings.
From there things got interesting. Life on a series of Army bases encouraged my retreat into a fantasy world. Life in a series of public school environments provided ample nourishment to my developing love of violence. Often heard in my home was the singular phrase, "I blame the schools." We all blamed the schools.
Both my fantasy and my academic worlds left marks and the amalgam proved useful the three times in my life I had guns pointed in my face. Despite those loving encounters the only real scars left on my body were inflicted by a six foot, seven inch tall drag queen. She didn't like the way I was admiring the play of three a.m. Waffle House fluorescent light over the high spandex sheen of her stockings.
After a series of low paying jobs that took me places no one dreams of going. I learned one thing. Nothing vomits quite so brutally as jail food. That's not the one thing I learned; it's an important thing to know, though. The one thing I learned is a secret. My secret. A terrible and dark thing I nurture in my nightmares. You learn your own lessons.
Eventually I began writing stories. Mostly I was just spilling out the, basically, true narratives of the creatures that lounge about my brain, laughing and whispering sweet, sweet things to say to women. Women see through me but enjoy the monsters in my head. They say, sometimes, that the things I say and write are lies or, "damn, filthy lies, slander of the worst kind, and the demented, perverted, wishful stories of a wasted mind." To which I always answer, I tell only the truth. I just tell a livelier truth than most people.
Sheriff's Detective Katrina Williams is called "Hurricane" for a reason. Suffering PTSD from her army days, she is angry all the time, and has severe trust issues. She's seeing a therapist as a condition for keeping her job. Her boss just happens to be Sheriff Billy Blevins .... her boyfriend.
While Katrina is investigating the theft of valuable walnut trees, she stumbles across the body of Sharon Rose, an up and coming country western singer. She has been shot in the head ..execution style.
What she discovers during this murder exploration, she finds that Billy knew the young girl ... but exactly how well did he know her? Katrina finds pictures of them together, his guitar is in her house. But Billy isn't talking. Is he somehow connected to her death?
Secrets and suspects abound, even in the singer’s own family, and the key to the murder may lie in the lyrics of what is now her swan song …
I started reading this series when the first book was published ... and I am so glad I did. This has been a terrific series with a seriously flawed female detective taking center stage. She's had quite a ride since the early days. I highly recommend starting at the very beginning.
This is a well written crime fiction with memorable characters. Plenty of suspects holds the reader's attention .. right up to the exciting finale.
Many thanks to the author / Kensington Books / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
A Killing Secret by Robert Dunn This is the 4th book in this series and can be read as a stand alone with no problems however I know I'd like to go back and read the first books if even to better understand the protagonist and her issues. Well written story with fleshed out characters kept my attention and I will be looking for more from this author! Thank you Netgalley and Kensington Publishing for this book and allowing me to leave my opinion
A Killing Secret by Robert E. Dunn Katrina Williams #4
Katarina is still dealing with the ghosts of her past but she is moving forward with her life and seems slightly more in control in this book than she was in the last one. I get her and really admire her ability to have survived all that she has and keep going. I am hoping this won’t be the end of the series!
Sent out to follow up on a claim of the theft of timber leads Katarina to a fresh crime scene where she finds not only the loss of high end furniture grade trees but also the body of a young woman murdered and dumped there. Who killed Rose Sharon and why? Katarina calls in the situation and then begins to look for clues to who might have killed this beautiful young woman and why it happened.
Needless to say, it is not enough to solve one murder mystery and find a timber thief...nope...Katarina ends up in quite a few volatile situations that see her bruised and battered as she follows leads hoping to find out more. She learns of a: protection racket, a timber theft ring, stalker, rapist...and more. She continues to deal with her past, hold herself apart and wants for things she seems afraid to verbalize.
This is a complex, dark, gritty story that I could not put down once I began reading. I love the way the author draws all of the little and large pieces of the story together while building to the finale. I also enjoyed learning more about Missouri – the state my daughter and her husband live in.
Did I enjoy this book? Yes Will I read more by this author? Definitely
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Lyrical Underground for the ARC – This is my honest review.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Kensington Books for an advance copy of A Killing Secret, the fourth novel to feature Detective Katrina “Hurricane” Williams of the Taney County, Missouri Sheriff’s Office.
Katrina is called out to a tree rustling and finds the body of a young woman, shot dead. She is quickly identified as rising Country star, Rose Sharon. What is not so quickly identifiable is Sheriff Billy Blevin’s reaction and his erratic actions afterwards which complicate the case and leave Katrina to investigate alone.
I thoroughly enjoyed A Killing Secret which is an atmospheric slice of rural noir with a complicated plot and strong characterisation and is another strong addition to a series I have loved from the start. I say the plot is complicated but the basic premise is simple - find Rose Sharon killer, it’s the intertwining relationships, motives and histories that make it complicated. Obviously the hunt for the killer is less than straightforward with several suspects and their own motives but it’s a great read trying to work out who and why.
I feel, however, that everything in the novel is built around the characters. It is told in the first person by “don’t call me Hurricane” who has a strong but damaged voice. She is a recovering alcoholic with serious trauma in her past and struggles every day with her temper and propensity for violence. She is also struggling in her relationship with Sheriff Billy Blevins and he shuts her out both personally and investigatively in this novel. There is much in this novel about the conflict. That makes her sound horrible but her honest narrative makes her very likeable. She is on a journey so I would recommend reading the series in order to get the best experience of it (the actual plot is self contained). With all the forward momentum I am already eagerly awaiting the next instalment. The plot really centres on the relationships in Rose Sharon’s family. They’re a strange, dysfunctional bunch but how dysfunctional only becomes apparent as the novel unfolds. I found it fascinating in a car crash way.
A Killing Secret held my attention throughout and I had to read it in one sitting, unable to put it down so I have no hesitation in recommending it as a good read.
Katrina "Hurricane" WIlliams is back, this time trying to solve the murder of an up and coming country music songbird, navigate through her quagmire of feelings for the new Sheriff Bill "BIlly" Blevins, and trying to keep the two separated when it looks like they are more connected than she'd like.
In this, the fourth of Dunn's Katrina Williams books, he's allowed her to grow as a PTDS survivor, and more importantly, as a woman. I've made mention that in the other books Katrina has no solid female relationships with women, except for her therapist ( whom I adore.) In the last book, Katrina's mother played a vital role in the plotline, but did little to influence her life in the here and now.
In A KILLING SECRET, a Sheriff's department female employee (called BOB, for a shortened name) allows Katrina to show a side of her we haven't seen before - a girl code/stand by your gender side that I found wonderful to read because of the way it was written so honestly on Katrina's part. WIthout giving away any spoilers, Katrina is instrumental in helping Bob through a situation Kat is all too familiar with - male dominance and superiority and sexism. And that's just a tiny subplotline, but it had a profound effect on me as a reader and a Katrina fan.
Dunn writes with a vivid intensity, bringing the odd bunch of characters in his tales to life effortlessly. The dialogue is loaded with the subtext I've come to expect from a Dunn book and continues to make the reader think.
All in all, another 5 star winner. Thanks to Netgalley and Kensington for allowing me a sneak peek for an honest opinion.

A Killing Secret (A Katrina Williams Novel Book 4)
The dialogue in this story was very confusing. Well, to be more clear, the main character Katrina was always confused. It seemed like every conversation she had with someone was them speaking in some sort of riddle without saying anything directly and Katrina always saying ‘what are you talking about’ or ‘I don’t understand’. Since she doesn’t know, I sure as heck don’t either by reading from her perspective.
She is always so angry and honestly sounds like an awful detective lol she takes everything personally and lashes back out when she feels attacked. (Like actual violence). It felt like they were trying to write about a strong woman with a tortured past but it just came off wrong in my opinion. It seemed like they were trying too hard to make her sound like a tough guy.
This book is different in a way where you pretty much know who the killer is by about halfway through the book and just read on as the cops keep getting malled by this guy over and over and over. It’s quite sad and really makes you cheer for Katrina to get them, mostly out of pity at this point.
I would probably give this about a ⭐️⭐️/5

Detective Katrina Williams is investigating trees being logged illegally on Hosea Fisher’s property. As she approaches the trees, she finds the body of a young girl. Shot execution-style. The body is that of Rose Sharon. A young up-and-coming singer. Who would want to destroy this young singer who is just getting started and finding fame as a singer? It’s up to Katrina to solve the murder, especially as the Sheriff, Billy Blevins, seems to have a connection to Rose. His reticence to discuss his relationship with Rose leaves Katrina with far more questions than answers.
This book is a brilliant novel as it’s full of drama! Fights! Attacks! Shooting! Katrina is the one who seems to be at the centre of all the arguments – I couldn't count how many times she personally got beaten up. How many times she lands in the hospital, only to pull out all the cannulas and sign herself out of the hospital with a concussion so that she can continue to find the baddies in this complicated murder-mystery.
It’s the first time I’ve met Katrina (Hurricane) Williams. Hopefully, not the last. I loved all the fights and drama she gets herself into. I’ve not read such a drama-filled book for ages.

Breakaway Reviewers received a copy of the book to review.
A Killing Secret is Book 4 of the Katrina Williams series, which I did not realize when requesting this book. In general, I like to read the series in order since I find that you miss out on the development of the character when you jump midway into a series. This was no exception, but as I got further into the story, the more entranced I became. Williams is a seriously flawed heroine battling her own demons. She is called Hurricane and seems to be angry at everyone and everything and trusts no one. She investigates the claim of a valuable timber theft and stumbles across the body of young woman. Williams tries to solve the murder and comes across several other nasty misdeeds as well. The author does a great job of bringing all the threads together for an exciting finale to a complex and somewhat dark story. I will be going back to book one and may re-read this one as I am sure it will be just as compelling the second time around. Thank you to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A very complex mystery, sometimes hard to follow, involving the murder of a young singer. Sheriff's Detective Katrina Williams is called to the site where expensive walnut trees have been illegally harvested. There she finds the body of a young woman, Rose Sharon, who is just beginning to make her mark in the country western music scene. Katrina, former military, will work a case that involves members of the small community as well as the sheriff, her boss and friend. The former sheriff is called back to assist and the current sheriff, Billy Blevins, seems to be running his own investigation. Katrina finds more questions than answers as danger follows while she moves from clue to clue to take down the killer. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)
A Killing Secret by Robert E. Dunn is the 4th book in the Katrina Williams mystery series, and my first book by this author. Sheriff detective Katrina “Hurricane” Williams is investigating stolen walnut trees when she stumbles across a dead body in the snow. Since this is my first book in the series, I felt a little loss with the characters and background in the story. Katrina suffers from PTSD, and she is really messed up. She has an odd relationship with the Sheriff Billy Blevins, who is her boss and boyfriend, but he is being secretive about his relationship with the dead girl she just found. I found this book to be interesting, and would recommend to anyone who enjoys hard hitting mysteries. This book also contains a lot of violence.
I reviewed a digital arc provided by NetGalley and the publisher. Thank you.
A KILLING SECRET is probably my favorite of the (now) four Katrina Williams books by author Robert Dunn due mainly to its ending. It took a decidedly unexpected turn - at least for me. And I was not at all disappointed.
This is an action packed novel, pure escapism, and sure to take your mind off whatever it needs diversion from. There are fights, car chases, fights, brawls, fights, did I mention fighting? Oh, and murder.
You can pick this up and read it without having read the others. Then do yourself a favor and go back and read the first three and see how it started. Each is a stand alone novel and good fun.
Robert Dunn has another hit with the fourth novel in the Katrina Williams series. Our heroine finds herself neck deep in the murder of rising country star Sharon Rose, shot execution style in the Missouri Ozark snow. When she finds out her boss, Sheriff Billy Blevins, had a relationship with the young singer and is stonewalling Katrina about it, it puts their already rocky romantic relationship to the test.
Dunn pens a compelling tale with deep character development and a page turning pace. Fans of the series won't want to miss it and if you haven't read the first one, A Living Grave, you'd better get busy.
Katrina Williams is back again, this time investigating the murder of a rising star, Rose Sharon. Her romance with Sheriff Blevin is extremely rocky, especially when she begins to question what kind of relationship he had with the deceased.
This was an imaginative and well written novel. Robert Dunn has woven a masterpiece that has corruption and deception at it's best. It had me completely guessing until the very end. If you really like suspenseful crime novels then this is the book for you!
This is the first book I’ve read in this series and I know I will be getting the others. Even though it is not the first in the series, I had no trouble enjoying it as a stand alone. I loved the characters and the story.
The characters were relatable and real and felt like people I could meet anywhere. I can’t wait to see what’s next for Katrina.
The fourth, and probably final book in this series, was an excellent read. I love this series and the main character, Katrina. Robert Dunn is as fantastic at creating characters as he is writing mysteries. I highly recommend this series to anyone who loves a good mystery.
This rural noir procedural is ostensibly about who killed Sharon Rose, a young singer, and her hateful family but it's really, at least for me, about Katrina Williams. Katrine ("Hurricane") has PTSD and lots of issues. She's pretty much closed herself off from others but she did let Sheriff Billy Blevins in an inch or so and now he's pushed her away because he's got a past with the victim. Katrina's beginning to expand her world thanks to therapy and is responding better to others. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. This is a short (but really just right) read that will pull you in.
