Sarah, Simon and Margaret spend their spare time helping a young man who runs a delivery round. When he is ill, they carry on, helped by a donkey called Josephine.
Gillian Baxter was a British writer of children's books. Her books were mainly pony books about horses, although one book, The Knightsgate Players, was about acting. Baxter also wrote under her married name " Gillian Hirst".
The twins, Sarah and Simon, and their friend, Margaret, spend all their spare time helping out on a smallholding, delivering the produce and looking after the animals. When the owner has an accident, the three children decide to take over so he doesn't lose his Christmas business. With the reluctant help of Josephine the donkey, they find it isn't as easy as they thought. And then when theives strike, they have a much bigger adventure than they planned.
I prefer Baxter's purely horsey books, but this was quite fun to read. It reminded me of the Famous Five type of books, where children always get the better of bumbling adults.
