Family on both sides belonged to the bourgeoisie. Vincent Daudet, the father, manufactured silk, but misfortune and failure dogged the man through life. A boyhood depressed Alphonse amid much truancy had. He spent his days mainly at Lyon, left in 1856, and began life as a schoolteacher at Alès, Gard, in the south. The position proved intolerable. As Charles Dickens declared that all through his prosperous career, the miseries of his apprenticeship to the blacking business haunted him in dreams, so after Daudet left Alès, he woke with horror, thinking for months that he still dwelt among his unruly pupils.
On 1 November 1857, he abandoned teaching and took refuge with Ernest Daudet, his brother only some three years his senior, who tried "soberly" to make a living as a journalist in Paris. Alphonse took to writing, and a small volume, Les Amoureuses (1858), collected his poems and met with a fair reception. He obtained employment on Le Figaro, then under energetic editorship of Cartier de Villemessant, and wrote two or three plays; those interested in literature began to recognize him as possessing individuality and promise. Morny, all-powerful minister of Napoleon III, appointed Daudet, who held a post of his secretaries till death of Morny in 1865, and Morny showed Daudet no small kindness. Daudet put his foot on the road to fortune.

This undoubtedly reflects a nostalgia rating -- but for all of that it has stood the test of time rather well.
I was put back on this magical mystery tour by a chance remark of Fionnuala's in her 2019 year-in-review comments: that a tartarin is both a braggart, and a finely woven cloth. Both connected in my mind with the indefatigable Tartarin de Tarascon, who, braggart though he was, took us all on a (finely-woven) magic carpet ride, in the year when we were 10 or 11.
Other than the fact that 39 children (yes, class sizes were that big, back then, and more) probably didn't understand half of the nuances and jokes that were delivered, we were all completely mesmerized by the adventure, the journey and the delivery. You couldn't hear a pin drop, in that classroom, for a half hour every afternoon, as M. Dufault became Tartarin for us.
I would suggest that never had we heard, in our little hamlet, stories that were so rich, wherein the words and descriptions were swimming with such meaning and taste one could almost eat them with a spoon.

Dufault would read to us, through the full of one scholastic year: alternating between French and English novels, we explored the furthest horizons of the imagination. More than most, Daudet remained in our hearts and engendered in us a desire to immerse ourselves in books -- to explore every corner of where these magical pages would take us.
More than half of that class of schoolmates became teachers: professors, instructors, lecturers, in various levels of schools, from elementary to university. They didn't all specialize in literature, of course, but they certainly brought their flare for the dramatic into their students' lives.
Daudet's rich imaginings, his deliberate exaggeration of the mundane and trivial; his colourful, exotic, incandescent descriptions of bird, beast and man, all gave us the breath to pursue our dreams.
Daudet was a much troubled soul; and no doubt, some of his literature would not gain an audience in today's more culturally sensitive world. (Thank goodness humankind does have the capacity to evolve in a positive way, from time to time.) But for all of that, I don't care, because I can distinguish between what was and what is; and I can distinguish between the spirit of adventure, and the cold heart facts of a cruel society.
He will always remain both Quichotte and Pansa for me -- the best of both worlds -- as I suspect he has remained for the other 38 that listened with me, in those old school days. Merci, M. Dufault, wherever you are.

Un po' Don Chisciotte in cerca di avventure che lo consacrino eroe agli occhi dei compaesani tarasconiani, molto Sancho Panza, pavido e dedito ai piaceri mondani, il buon Tartarino si reca in Africa a caccia di leoni per dar mostra del proprio valore. Lo attendono avventure - e, soprattutto disavventure - e una non ben placata dose di disillusione personale, forse anche la - quasi - raggiunta consapevolezza della vanità dell'apparire. Romanzo dal sapore picaresco, ben strutturato e scritto, spassoso al punto giusto senza mai annoiare, ma che non incontra il mio gusto, non amando io particolarmente questo genere di romanzi. Con buona pace di Daudet.

Tartarín de Tarascón es una novela de aventuras de estilo humorístico escrito por el francés Alphonse Daudet y publicado por primera vez en 1872. La obra consta de tan solo 82 páginas y tres grandes episodios (En Tarascón, En el país de los "teurs" y En la tierra de los leones), cada uno de ellos divididos en 14, 12 y 8 capítulos, respectivamente.
Comentario:
El estilo narrativo, lleno de humor y sarcasmo, me hizo recordar al estilo de Gogol, de la primera época de Dostoievsky y de Luciano de Samosata.
Tartarín, es el héroe de Tarascón, hombre de gran reputación en su pueblo, considerado el más valiente y audaz que haya existido jamás. Vive en Tarascón, un pueblo de lo más pacífico, no obstante Tartarín siempre está al acecho por si aparecen bandidos o animales salvajes. Nunca ha salido de su pueblo y producto de tanto que ha leído, su pensamiento es fantasioso. Se cree un guerrero habiendo devorado innumerables obras de aventuras y cacerías pero también ama la comodidad plácida de un sillón calentito a la manera del Sancho. Es la cómica fusión entre Don Quijote y Sancho Panza.
Por un mal entendido que luego se convirtió en fervor popular que creía que Tartarín iría a cazar leones, ¡leones! (En Tarascón no hay tales fieras), el héroe por evitar desilusionar al populacho al desmentir tal chismorreo, "tuvo que verse obligado" a emprender un viaje hasta Argelia en busca de un león del Atlas, ocasionándole toda suerte de aventuras y rompederos de cabezas.
Sin duda es una obra que place leerla de a sorbitos.
Nota: Esta es la primera obra de una trilogía, espero poder conseguir las otras dos que faltan de las aventuras sobre el singular Tartarín de Tarascón.

“Ai leoni! Ai leoni!”
Una gran bella sorpresa si è per me rivelata la lettura di questo breve romanzo del francese Alphonse Daudet (1840-1897), che m’incuriosiva da diverso tempo.
Pubblicato nel 1872, il libro aprì una trilogia i cui due successivi titoli non ebbero forse la stessa fortuna del primo. Penna particolarmente prolifica, quella dell’autore, la cui opera spazia dai romanzi alle novelle, dalle poesie ai testi teatrali. Al centro dell’opera in questione, un personaggio molto originale le cui (dis)avventure colorano queste pagine di autentica e irresistibile comicità: Tartarino è un uomo del sud (come lo stesso Daudet), della città di Tarascona, in Provenza. È un inguaribile spaccone, nonché bramoso di viaggi avventurosi, possibilmente lontani dalla patria. Il suo giardino è pieno di piante esotiche in miniatura, compreso un baobab che ha ormai preso comoda dimora in un vaso da geranio, mentre in una delle stanze della sua abitazione si trovano in bella mostra armi di ogni tipo e dimensione.
È talmente assetato d’avventura – e tale è la fama di grande cacciatore di cui gode nella sua città – che all’improvviso si ritrova, suo malgrado e armato di tutto punto, a bordo di una nave in partenza alla volta dell’Algeria, terra di non bene identificati “turchi” e, all’epoca, già da tempo in mano francese. Obiettivo del viaggio: andare a caccia dei temibili leoni dell’Atlante!
Attraverso una prosa fluida e molto bella, Daudet ci racconta di un eroe in verità tragicomico il cui animo si sente spesso diviso tra un don Chisciotte e un Sancho Panza. Mettendo piede per la prima volta in Africa, ecco Tartarino d’improvviso faccia a faccia con un mondo, quello arabo-islamico, che, sebbene “contaminato” dalla presunta civilizzazione europea, esercita ancora un notevole fascino derivante anzitutto dalla vaga idea di un Oriente fiabesco che finisce per estendersi anche a ovest. Colpisce la descrizione dettagliata di Algeri, con la sua caratteristica Casbah dalle viuzze strette, i mercati, i minareti delle moschee da cui i muezzìn chiamavano i fedeli musulmani alla preghiera, le donne velate, la società coloniale che, impigrita, sostava ai café e nelle piazze. Un brulicare confuso e tumultuoso di mori, neri subsahariani ed europei, un crocevia di popolazioni e culture che lo scrittore nativo di Nimes, essendo stato in Algeria anni prima, sa cogliere con un’abilità a mio avviso davvero degna di nota; il tarasconese, dopo l’iniziale timore e sospetto nei confronti degli abitanti del posto, finisce addirittura per prendere casa nella città vecchia di Algeri, per via di una liaison imprevista, in mezzo ai musulmani che prende a frequentare, al punto che lui stesso viene chiamato sidi Tart’ri (signor Tartarino). E la caccia ai leoni? In realtà, come il nostro eroe scoprirà amaramente, le nobili belve di un tempo si sono estinte in Algeria; l’unico leone di cui lui riuscirà a portar via la pelle come trofeo sarà quello di un povero felino malandato praticamente addomesticato.
L’epilogo sarà pieno di sorprese, tra cui la più scontata e triste si rivelerà la disonestà europea ai danni dell’ingenuo Tartarino; tuttavia, il ritorno a Tarascona non sarà privo del tappeto rosso, come del resto si conviene agli eroi. Un romanzo godibilissimo, ancor più nella bella traduzione di quasi un secolo fa di Aldo Palazzeschi.

As I am planning to visit Tarascon in about a month, I thought I’d better be ready in case I bump into Tartarin so that I can recognize him. Now that I know that I may encounter him dressed as an Algerian wearing a red chéchia (fez), it may be easier for me. A give-away would also be if I saw a man with a gentle-looking camel on any road around Marseille or Avignon.
For if I were to approach him, his naiveté, his camaraderie, and his empathy towards animals (some, since after all he sees himself as a hunter), would make it easy for me to approach him. And then his dual personality would seem familiar for, as Daudet tells us, he is both a Tartarin-Quichotte and a Tartarin-Sancho Pança. Tartarin like Don Quijote in his idealism, his bravery and his drive for adventure. Not anyone who has never left a place like Tarascon would envision embarking for Algeria in the search of lions. Tartarin like Sancho Panza for his commonsense preference for a good life, nice food, as well as for his robust, short and roundish (enbompoint) physique.
Daudet has managed to weld the spiritual with the material better than Cervantes did. Because Cervantes is indeed in Daudet’s mind. His double character lands in the coast of Algeria, where the presence of Cervantes, as he was made a captive for five years, is evoked and invoked. And Tartarin’s geographical map of the Orient is defined in his term Les Teurs (the Turks), against whom Cervantes fought. And Tartarin is ready to abandon everything in search of his
But this is more than another version of a Renaissance hero. The transposition from La Mancha to Provence and the exoticism found a bit further South than the already exotic and quixotic Spain, retains the added spice of a parody of 19C Romanticism, with insinuations of Lamartine’s Voyage en Orient, and the rich images, voluptuousness and colours of the Algerian women of Delacroix.

Incredibly entertaining, beautifully told story, full of irony; undertones of criticism on the bourgeois gentilhomme. Typical exaggerations, in line of Rabelais. Outspoken defense of the southern mentality.

Αχ, τι ωραίο βιβλιαράκι που ήταν αυτό! Ούτε που κατάλαβα πότε το ξεκίνησα και πότε το τελείωσα, από τη μια το μέγεθός του, από την άλλη η υπέροχη ιστορία του που με ταξίδεψε και με έκανε να ξεχαστώ τελείως από την πεζή πραγματικότητα, σίγουρα ήταν δυο παράγοντες που βοήθησαν στη γρήγορη και πάνω απ' όλα ευχάριστη ανάγνωσή του. Και μιλάμε για βιβλίο εκατόν πενήντα ετών (!), που όμως χάρη στην φοβερή ιστορία του και το υπέροχο και πολύ έξυπνο χιούμορ του, διατηρεί ακόμα τη φρεσκάδα του σαν έργο, και σίγουρα μπορεί να διασκεδάσει και να ψυχαγωγήσει και τους σημερινούς αναγνώστες (αρκεί, βέβαια, αυτοί να είναι μην είναι και τόσο πολιτικά ορθοί). Τέλος πάντων, πολύ το χάρηκα το βιβλίο και ένιωσα ένα ιδιαίτερο δέσιμο με τον πρωταγωνιστή του, οι περιπέτειες του οποίου είναι η αλήθεια ότι θα μου λείψουν ολίγον τι. Αλλά είναι από τα βιβλία που πολύ ευχαρίστως θα διάβαζα για δεύτερη και τρίτη και τέταρτη φορά! Υ.Γ. Διάβασα την έκδοση του Καστανιώτη, με την ολοζώντανη μετάφραση και την αν μη τι άλλο χαριτωμένη εικονογράφηση. Στα ελληνικά έχει κυκλοφορήσει και από τις εκδόσεις Εστία, σε μετάφραση Αλέξανδρου Παπαδιαμάντη!

I remember reading this book for a French Lit class and just absolutely loving it. Tartarin is just a fun character, with the Don Quixote and Sancho Panza sides of his personality making for some interesting episodes with plenty of amusing misinterpretation along the way. He loves his comforts but longs for excitement, and what he ends up with is quite the prodigious adventure.

Тартарен, личност авантуристичког духа, која слови за мистичну, храбру, скоро легендарну појаву у свом малом месту Тараскону, чиме је свакако допринело његово “преувеличавање” доживљаја, подстакнуто његовим марљивим изучавањем авантуристичких романа, живот у егзотичним условима окружен ретким биљкама и оружјем, као и његова личност коју описује као полу-Кихотску, жедну за авантурама, и њену супротност другу половину - Санчо, која га спутава да те авантуре спроведе у дело, те никада заправо не избива из свог маленог места. Када мештани почну да сумњају у веродостојност његових изјава, што му нарушава репутацију, одлучује да се отисне ка Алжиру у лов на лавове, где доживљава неколицину комичних и непријатних ситуација, које разбијају његове илузије, како о познавању света и авантура, тако и о сопственој личности. У свом селу бива дочекан као херој те наставља по старом, подстакнут “тарасконским сунцем које позива на невину лаж”.

Мабуть дитинство закінчилось (ДЛЯ МЕНЕ!) це коли мене вже не захоплюють пригодницькі історії. Принаймні нові для мене. Бо на мій сором, будучи активним читачем з дуже раннього дитинства, я не читала про Тартарена Тарасконського. Можливо, якби я його прочитала в дитинстві, коли я захоплювалася книгами Дюма, мені сподобалась би і ця книга. (А може б і ні, бо більшість тексту займає охота, а це не моє захоплення).

“Tartarin de Tarascon” est un ouvrage peu divertissant et surévalué. La suite, “Tartarin sur les Alpes” est pire encore. Les évènements se passent en Suisse. On commence avec une parodie des snobismes des touristes étrangers dans les hôtels de station. On ajoute des terroristes russes que l’on croyait partout en Suisse à l’époque où Daudet a écrit son roman. Tartarin avec son accent méridional atroce arrive pour mettre les pieds dans les plats. C’est supposé être comique; ce n’en est nullement.

Finally! Forty-two years after being handed the book to read, I've finished "Tartarin de Tarascon!" And to think it only took 24 hours (this being the scholastic version distributed to us in Level 3 HS French.
Anyway, it was a fun read; a cute story. And I never knew that it was written by Daudet, whose "Lettres de mon moulin" is one of my favorite stories.

A veces olvido que la literatura de ficción puede ser un gran entretenimiento. Que ese sea su principal e inmediato efecto. No hay nada de malo en ello. No siempre debe estar evocando sentimientos y emociones profundas o haciéndonos reflexionar sobre la compleja psiquis de los humanos o realizar el vano intento de representar la totalidad.
Tartarin de Tarascon capto mi atención desde el primer hasta el último párrafo. Un personaje quijotesco, pero con una aventura y trasfondo mucho menos ambicioso, aunque por momentos igual de hilarante. Esa dualidad entre Sancho y Quijote que el mismo autor señala que se encuentra en Tartarin, hace que cobre una personalidad propia, más allá de los personajes de Cervantes. Personalidad que, pese a ciertas características un poco inverosímiles, hace de este personaje un tanto más real, del que uno hasta se puede sentir identificado, especialmente por esa tensión entre la comodidad y el riesgo.
Si bien el libro es entretenido y cómico, eso no quiere decir que sea superficial. Daudet es parte de la corriente naturalista de la literatura del siglo XIX, por lo que hay en el contexto que se va contando la historia una realidad que, si bien a veces es exagerada, representa la Francia de finales del siglo XIX, quizás con una critica encubierta al colonialismo europeo, ridiculizando el arquetipo del explorador civilizado occidental en tierras salvajes.
Supongo que hace años este autor era más leído que ahora, llegué a él tras la recomendación de Bolaño en sus entrevistas. No lo había visto en librerías grandes, pero encontré este libro en los libros usados (había varias copias). Debo volver más seguido a retomar estos clásicos “pasados de moda”.

Tartarin de tarascon est un roman comique et poétique un seul adjectif pour qualifier ce chef-d'œuvre :merveilleux. Daudet- dont le vocabulaire est riche- compare les villes d'Algérie à les province françaises. Il mélange entre l'ironie et la bonne foi,le réalisme et l'humour ;le rêve et la réalité, la sympathie et la défiance. Tarantin de tarasco est un grand homme musclé de la province .la chasse est sa passion,plutôt lire les livres de la chasse et l'héroïsme. Notre héros s'ennuyait à tarascon,il décida de faire le voyage vers le Nord d'Afrique pour chasser les lions.Pour notre personnage sympathique- dont les aventures nous fait rire à chaque page- l'Algérie ,l'Afrique,la Grèce,la Perse,la Turquie ,la Mésopotamie tous cela forme que un grand pays très vaste et s'appelle les Teurs .ce roman que j'ai savouré cette semaine mérite plus d'intention critique.

What can I say other than that it's a classic.
I remember I had to read this for French classes in highschool and I very much remember not being all too keen about it. Now, 25 years later, I picked it up of my own accord and read it -- in French. In fact, it's still the same copy I read in highschool. I must say, I got more of the story now than I did back then.
Tartarin spoke to me more as a character and his story too. I still missed some parts due to not quite understanding the French language (my native language is Dutch, am near fluent in English with rusty French and basic German to finish the line) but overall, I quite liked it -- liked it more now than in highschool (that's for sure).

An easy-going, pleasant-to-read comic story, it will brighten your mood and lighten your day. The characters and action seem to be well rooted in reality, and the things that happen can correspond even to our present.

Zanimljiva i duhovita pripovetka. Upoređuju je sa Don Kihotom, samo što je Tartaren lovio lavove. Objavljena je 1872. godine i Dodeov prijatelj i pisac Gistav Flober je rekao za ovo delo da je remek-delo. Međutim, stanovnici Taraskona nisu bili tog mišljenja i pretili su Dodeu ovim rečima: „Samo neka dođe, odraćemo ga“ i „Smrt Dodeu“.

Bu sefer eski ama sevdiğim bir klasiği tekrar okudum ( belki 45 sene sonra). Tarzını sevdiğim yazar Daudet'den Taraskonlu Tartarin ile keyifli bir yolculuğa çıktık.
Şiir, roman, hikâye, mektup, anı-mektup türlerinde eserler veren Daudet’nin Değirmenimden Mektuplar adlı eserinden sonra, 1872 yılında yazdığı Tarasconlu Tartarin, Güney Fransalı bir av tutkununun Fransız Cezayiri’ndeki serüvenlerini anlatır. Yayımlandığı ilk dönemde ilgi görmese de palavracı Tartarin zamanla Fransız edebiyatının sevilen komik karakterleri arasına girmiştir.
Daudet, bu eserinde 19. yüzyıl Avrupa'sında zihinleri büyüleyen Doğu'ya bakışını, hem bu gereksiz oryantalist ilgiyi hem de Doğu'yu güler yüzlü bir şekilde eleştirir. Daudet, eserini "Dostum Gonzague Privat'a" diyerek ithaf etmiş. Benim için araştırılacak bir isim. Gonzague Privat (13.07.1843 Montpellier -30.11.1917 Paris), Fransız ressam, edebiyatçı, drama sanatçısı ve sanat eleştirmenidir.
Önce Taraskon neresi bir öğrenelim, sonra kitabın konusuna bakarız. Taraskon, Fransa'nın güneydoğusunda, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur adlı bölgesinde, Bouches-du-Rhône iline bağlı bir komündür.
Bu küçük şehirde yaşayan Tartarin, macera ve aslan avı aşkıyla yanmaktadır. Ama evinden ve doğduğu yerden hiç ayrılmamış olan Tartarin için Afrika fazlasıyla uzak bir yerdir. Hem içindeki macera aşkı hem de çevrenin alaycı baskısı sonucu nihayet yola çıkmaya karar verir. Acaba gittiği çöllerde bir aslanı pusuya düşürerek avlamayı başarabilecek midir?

Alphonse Daudet (13 May 1840 – 16 December 1897) was a French novelist. He was the father of Léon Daudet and Lucien Daudet.
lphonse Daudet was born in Nîmes, France. His family, on both sides, belonged to the bourgeoisie. The father, Vincent Daudet, was a silk manufacturer — a man dogged through life by misfortune and failure. Alphonse, amid much truancy, had a depressing boyhood. In 1856 he left Lyon, where his schooldays had been mainly spent, and began life as a schoolteacher at Alès, Gard, in the south of France. The position proved to be intolerable. As Dickens declared that all through his prosperous career he was haunted in dreams by the miseries of his apprenticeship to the blacking business, so Daudet says that for months after leaving Alès he would wake with horror, thinking he was still among his unruly pupils.
On 1 November 1857, he abandoned teaching and took refuge with his brother Ernest Daudet, only some three years his senior, who was trying, "and thereto soberly," to make a living as a journalist in Paris. Alphonse took to writing, and his poems were collected into a small volume, Les Amoureuses (1858), which met with a fair reception. He obtained employment on Le Figaro, then under Cartier de Villemessant's energetic editorship, wrote two or three plays, and began to be recognized, among those interested in literature, as possessing individuality and promise. Morny, Napoleon III's all-powerful minister, appointed him to be one of his secretaries — a post which he held till Morny's death in 1865 — and showed Daudet no small kindness. Daudet had put his foot on the road to fortune.
