I was ssssoooo waiting for this sequel from the moment I finished “Sin and Chocolate,” wanting to know what would happen next with Lexie and Kieran. Things are looking up for Lexie thanks to her new job with Kieran. There is finally enough food in the house. Her wards Mordecai and Daisy are acting like typical spoiled teenagers now that they can (these two totally steal the show whenever they appear on page.) And Author KF Breene brings her fun quirky voice to every scene, making this paranormal romance a treat to read.

Lexie is learning to control the necromancer powers she’s now aware she has, and with the help of new friend Bria, is on the hunt for Kieran’s Selkie mother, who is imprisoned by his demigod father. But as they comb the city looking for clues, can they keep from getting discovered? The heat level definitely turned up in this one, and there were some steamy scenes between Kieran and Lexie. I devoured this one. Eagerly awaiting the next book!

Finally! We see some 🔥

Yes! Finally, we see these two in action! Although brief, it was epic- both on the field and off the field 😉.

2024 Reread
Still loved it! These side characters are amazing! I even got choked up when it came to Kieran’s mom and everything that happened 😭. Ugh. Who’s cutting onions?!?!

Also… the 🔥 scene? Uffff 🫠. I’m so glad I own the book, because the graphic audio took some lines out. But I definitely found myself blushing 🤣

2021 review down below

The book continues from book 1. Lexi is tasked with freeing Kieran’s mom and allowing her to cross over so that she can finally Rest In Peace. As she is investigating what she needs to do to get all this done, she finds other concerning situations that truly affect her. We meet the hilarious, daredevil Bria who is never afraid of challenges, drama, battles, or danger LOL. We also see Daisy starting to embrace her natural fighting persona and we see Mordecai becoming healthier and getting ready to shift for the first time.

Alexis can’t shake the nagging feeling that she needs to do more for the spirits that have been imprisoned unfairly. And her magic/power is truly something that they have never encountered before. She just needs to learn how to embrace and hone it effectively; Keiran wants her to train and perfect her skills because of how powerful she really is. Not only that, but they need to prepare to fight against Keiran‘s father, who has done horrible things in the name of maintaining fear and power. The biggest thing on Kieran and Lexi‘s conscience is freeing his mom. The battle has just begun, and need need to prepare for it. There’s a lot going on in the background that I’m sure is preparing us for the next books.

Can we talk about how hilarious Bria is? Lol she cracks me up! Daisy does too. I am loving these secondary characters ❤️. The chemistry between Kieran and Lexi is so damn combustible. Finally, finally we see them take it to the next level. Dear Lord their connection is just so visceral and it’s not only figuratively stamped on their souls, but literally as well. 🔥🥵. They are raw passion. I loved it!

I jumped straight into the second novel in this series. There were some definite improvements from the first one. I was mostly looking for more plot with the world building. The recaps of the first novel, internal monologue and the banter between characters could still be refined. The action does pick up and Lexi does more with her powers. I like her friendship with Bria. Bria is hilarious! The kids take a back seat in this one, which makes sense with the plot points of Lexi fighting for Kieran’s mom and the trapped ghosts. The Six are somewhat undefined. Only Zorn and Jack stand out to me, but maybe that will get better with more novels. Lexi is a bit of a conundrum for me. Sometimes she’s thoughtful and insightful; other times she’s too instinctual and reckless. Sometimes her naïveté is off-putting. I will say she’s a character with guts.

This is turning into a pretty good series. The last time I tried a fantasy series similar to this one, I found the main character annoying, the fight unclear, the magic undefined and the plot non-existent. I’m glad this series is better than that.

I’ve been on this paranormal binge and lately I have been liking slow burn reads. BUT this my friend is no slow burn. Wow.

I’m not sure if doing the audio version was best for me. For one thing, I kind of pay attention, but then sometimes I don’t. So this one wasn’t as understandable as the first one was since I read the first one instead of listening to it. As to the narrator. She’s fine. I prefer a higher pitched female voice because Khristine Hvam doesn’t sound like a 25-year-old, but overall her voice is nice and her voice transitions are fine.

So, the first book was a huge tease right? No steam and a lot of build up. I liked the world building in this series and I was okay with the second book being a little slow. I wanted it to be slow, but it wasn’t. A lot has happened and I wonder if this book will only be a 3 book series?

Lexi is on the job in finding Kieran’s mom’s skin. I like that Lexi is now working for Kieran and we find out a little more about the world in which they live in. I love the wards she takes care of and I hope there will be spin-off books about them!

Kieran and Lexi to my surprise don’t really have a hot and cold relationship, it seems to be hot hot hot. Like I said, for once I wanted a slow burn! But a lot of people will be happy with this book.

I like the new character Bri, only because the narrator narrated her voice very adorable and I like her personality.

I would say a huge chunk of the book is Bri and Lexi’s interaction, so don’t be surprised if Kieran isn’t in every scene.

Overall, I’m surprised on my enjoyment to this series. I hate to say this, but I have been having trouble in finding well-written self published books. I feel like self published books aren’t as polished as they once were. Good to know I am going to still keep my kindle unlimited subscription and will be scrubbing to find more gems.

3.5 stars.
Everything was going great. Alexis is working, Mordecai and Daisy are training. They get FOOD and rent is paid. Bria is like that co-worker not quite friend that goes beyound the boss' instructions. While they end up being right, this path always includes hiding under beds, closets, attics and barely escaping with your life. This book was entertaining and I was very happy...until Alexis drops to her knees for Kieran.

I had to dock this one a half star, I was tempted to dock it a full star because I am quite unhappy. Kieran has this seduction power so I am not convinced that Alexis is so wildly attracted to him outside the demi-god power. I just am not on-board with whatever that is lust thing they have going on. Now, I do like Zoran and Daisy. I would like to see that relationship developed in subsequent books as she becomes of age.

Plus, I fully expected Valens to be aware of what was going on and there was no real retaliation for the trespass. I don't buy that. The rescue of the skins was exactly what I needed to feel satisfied with this book. I look forward to the bad guy coming for vengeance in book 3

My Rating: two and a half stars

This novel started off good but by the middle it started dragging on. There's only so much a secondary character can do to keep me interested in the story. If it wasn't for the narrator this novel would have probably ended as my first DNF of 2019.

Alexis has a great sense of humor, but what came off as an ability to drive people in circles and make them believe things were moving in the right direction turned into being dragged along into dangerous situations and solving things by pure chance and coincidence. I also hate how "untrained" she is but everything comes to her SO easy or by pure chance. I also don't understand why she loses her ability to think like a rational human being when Kieran is around. It was cute in the beginning. We've moved past that by now. She's lost her shine and I don't know if I want to go through all this again in a future book for this series.

Kieran was something in this novel alright. I don't get the appeal to him. He's domineering, controlling and expects everyone to jump when he says jump. I also remember (from the audio book) towards the end that he says something along the lines of hearing the word no from Alexis only excites him farther. That's not a sentence I ever want to hear from anyone, ever.

Daisy was the bright star in this novel! I want to read about her story, without having to deal with Alexis and Kieran. Mordecai didn't play a huge part in the book but I would also love to get his story sometime in the future. Heck, I'll even take reading about Kieran's Six and how they eventually get their happy endings. Alexis and Kieran just aren't doing it for me.

Overall, I'm not sure I want to know more about this series. The world the author created feels huge and intricate but the characters aren't helping keep me invested in it.

The Audio Book:

The audio book narration was great! I could differentiate all the characters and didn't get lost in any dialogue. It was overall relaxing and probably one of the reasons I finished reading this novel in the first place.

Book 2 pretty much continues on from the first installment. I was laughing from the get go, K.F. Breene has a sarcastic sense of humor that appeals to my inner child and keeps me reading for more.

So, I've just come off a marathon read of a Deborah Harkness trilogy that had way too much historical detail. Sin and Magic was a good read to unwind with. I read it fairly quickly and for the most part it was smooth going.

The underlying plot hummed along but didn't really capture my interest unlike the little kernels dropped about the secondary characters. It was harder to invest in the main characters when the secondary characters are screaming for attention lol!

I loved both of the main character leads in the first book, but somewhere along the way (2nd book) their characters dropped off the boil. The alpha male isn't supposed to be needy, anxious and unsure of themselves, and I can't stand females who naively think they know it all only to be saved by the male. That was kinda predictable.

Bria and Daisy... I liked their characters Daisy more than Bria they are so similar, but Bria became too much and annoyed the hell out of me. I just wanted to slap her.

It was a little wishy washy but there were some great moments in the storyline. Looking forward to the next book and would like to read any spin off stories too....hint hint.....

3 stars doesn't necessarily mean a terrible read because it wasn't, it just lacked something....

Nothing particularly deep and moving but a fun, easy escape. Because of its (and the previous) book’s short length, they read more like a continuing soap opera without all the angst.

I'm so disappointed. I absolutely loved the first book in this series, and am so underwhelmed by the second installment.

Lexi and Kieran were just boring. I didn't feel any of the Book 1 heat between them.

I am so tired of "omg so naturally beautiful" heroines. I feel like I was beaten over the head with just how stunningly amazingly gorgeous Lexi was. And the fact that she wore little to no makeup was mentioned again and again. How it that relevant to anything?

And Kieran's "six- but almost eight-pack". If it was mentioned once, cool. Lets me know that Kieran isn't normal ripped, he's out-of-this-world ripped. But two or three times more? It's just distracting. That and the cut pecs. Eh.

There was also some unnecessary stuff in there. I did skim a fair bit, because most of the scenes with Bria just annoyed me. But there was also stuff that was just weird. For example, Daisy turned on the faucet and "clear water filled her glass". I think that sometimes less is more. Saying that Daisy got herself some water would have sufficed.

Lastly (and this is just nitpicky because I am South African): I always get super excited when my country is mentioned in books or movies. But it's inevitably for some negative reason, and this book was no exception. SA was involved in the illegal trade of magical beasts with Russia. Just...why? And yes, I know it was one sentence and this isn't a rational irritation.

I'll still read the final book, because I need to finish a series once I start, but I am going in with WAY lower expectations.

Having agreed to work with demigod Kieran Alexis knows her life will never be the same. She can't turn her back on the ghosts that his father has trapped but she worries about putting her two adopted children at risk so her decision is weighing heavily on her. Kieran has vowed to keep her safe and he's followed through on his promises to help Alexis' family and to provide protection for them all but deep down he knows that if his father discovers what they're up to then Kieran might not be powerful enough to save them all.

After loving the first book in this series I was really excited to get my hands on a copy of Sin & Magic and I'm happy to say that the series is just getting better and better. Alexis has spent so much time hiding her magical abilities that she has never really bothered to test out her magic and has no idea what she's really capable of so it was really interesting to see her start to push her boundaries. She is obviously far more powerful than she ever realised but it's a fine line between learning to use her powers and using them so much that she draws unwanted attention to herself so she's got to be really careful testing the waters.

I think one of the things I love the most about these books is the bond between Alexis and the two teenagers she basically adopted. There is a lot of love between Alexis, Daisy and Mordecai so while they may rub each other up the wrong way occasionally they always 100% have each other's backs. It's interesting to see how Kieran's Six (the men he trusts the most and has a strong bond with) all interact with Alexis and the kids, they seem to really appreciate the little family and make excuses to spend time with them and I enjoyed the interaction between them all.

Of course I also love the developing romance between Alexis and Kieran too, there has been an intense attraction between them since they first met but Alexis is wary so this side of the story hasn't been rushed at all which I appreciate. Kieran is quite surprised by the way he reacts to Alexis and it scares him that he doesn't think he can keep her safe but he's slowly starting to realise that she is powerful in her own right and perhaps working together they could be unstoppable.

I'm already looking forward to the next book in the series, I can't wait to see how Kieran's father reacts when he finds out what they've been up to but I have a feeling they're going to be in a whole heap of trouble when he does!

Liked but also disliked certain events.

I enjoyed the book but it didn’t feel as exciting as the first book. I devoured the first book. This one I took my time reading but found myself not liking how Kieran kept pushing Alexis away. Like he loves her but doesn’t help her. Alexis has this power that isn’t like others but that he hires Bria a necromancer to help her with. My issue is no one can do what Alexis does and they keep acting like she has to do things the exact same way as them when that’s not the case.

Bria is annoying as hell for me. Says one thing does another and Alexis lets her. Alexis lets Bria push her around. And then Alexis gets in trouble with Kieran because she’s not doing as he asked.

I love the cast of characters Bria aside. The group of Kieran’s six are funny but serious but also safe. It’s an interesting mix and I enjoy Alexis’s kids. I love their brains, and humor.

I can’t wait to see where this series goes though.

"You're beautiful," he murmured against my lips. "When I first saw you, I thought you were trying to disguise your beauty with the rough clothing. Trying to blend in with your surroundings. It seemed so daft. A creature like you was not made to fit in, you were made to stand out. To draw notice. Your angelic face, your easy confidence, your incredible magic - you are one in a million and it pains me that you have to be hidden away from admiring eyes."
My body felt as light as air. I hadn't thought my heart could swell any more, but he'd just proven me wrong.

Holy shit, this was really good. I liked the first book just fine, but this one kinda blew it out of the water and I can't wait to find out what happens next. This one didn't get dragged down by the enormous amounts of new information like the first one did. Now don't get me wrong, it was necessary info for the first book. And I much prefer to have a detailed description when walking into a new world, with new myths and powers and characters. There is nothing worse than starting a new series with new words and terms and then absolutely no expansion or explanation. So while this book had a nice little recap to refresh the situation, the people, and their circumstances, the pace of the story didn't suffer from any info dumping.
And the story, well I gotta say, I liked everything about it. I still love Alexis and her kids. Alexis is learning more about herself and her powers and her relationship with Kieran is heating up. Daisy is still a smartass and Mordecai is still the voice of reason, but both are learning and evolving. We see a different side from Kieran and it doesn't detract from what we already know about him. He's evolving too, learning to balance power and compassion. Kieran's Six are becoming more fleshed out and I like where it's going. In fact, I seriously hope maybe they will get their own stories down the road. But I think my favorite addition to the story was Bria. She cracked me up and I like her role in the whole thing. Things are definitely about to speed up and I'm looking forward to see if it all comes to a head in the next book.
I admittedly went a bit overboard with my updates with this one, but that tends to happen when I'm really into the story I'm reading. That said, I'll probably go overboard on how many scenes I add below too, so…fair warning and/or spoilers:

"Daisy, give him a break." I said, moving to the paper bags. "He's my new boss, and he brought us groceries."
"Since when does the boss do manual labor?" Daisy asked, piling on the attitude. She wasn't the passive-aggressive type - when she was annoyed, she wanted everyone to know it.
"What can I tell ye? I couldn't pass up such a glowing welcome." Kieran smiled as he reached into one of the bags and pulled out a white paper bundle.
She sniffed. "Since when do you have an accent?"
"Daisy, seriously, give it a rest." I took out ingredients and set them on the counter. "He's here, this is happening, so let's be civil."
Daisy flung out a hand. "I'm just a little concerned, is all. He has stalked you most of the time he's known you, he's manipulated you into working for him, and now he's here, in your home, probably trying to get in your pants. He's getting too close, Lexi. You need protection from yourself."
"I'm in earshot," Kieran murmured tiredly, though not in anger. "In case you hadn't noticed…"
"She has a point," Mordecai said as he carried in two glasses and set them next to the sink. A waft of funk slapped me in the face. "Every time he comes around, he seems to want something."
"A big guy in a small kitchen," Kieran mumbled. "Hard to miss."
"Right now he probably wants you to take a shower." I waved my hand in front of my nose. "Mordie, you need deodorant."
"He's trying to cut corners and save some money." Daisy rolled her eyes. "I told him to spend the few dollars, but apparently his stink doesn't offend him like it offends everyone else."
"It's natural." Mordecai replied.
"So are farts, but you don't see people rejoicing when those waft around," Daisy said. "His feet, too, Lexi. My whole room reeks."
"Our room." Mordecai left the kitchen, bending to grab a sweatshirt before disappearing from sight.
"It won't be yours if you keep up this stink," Daisy called after him. "We'll get a dog house and put you outside."
"Low blow," I heard from the back bedroom.
"I didn't mean because you're a wolf-" The door slammed, cutting Daisy off. "You're more sensitive than a chick," she yelled.
The door opened. "Anyone is more sensitive than you. Rocks are more than you. You're a hard-hearted old cow!" The door slammed again.
I pointed at Kieran, who was shrugging out of his suit jacket with a mouth-watering grin.
"Did you say you wanted to go out to eat?" I asked. "Because if so, I'm in. Or how about Guinness for dinner? It's super filling. Any takers on leaving them here and heading down to the pub?"

~

Kieran was facing me, his pants tented by his massive erection. His black hair stood up at odd angles, like he'd just run his hands through it in frustration.
"Sorry about…" He didn't gesture, but I knew he was talking about putting distance between us right before I got to where I was going. He lowered his voice to a whisper. "I didn't think you'd want your wards walking in on that." He paused, and a smile ghosted his lips. "I also didn't want to get kicked out by a couple of teenagers."
I forced out a breath, sagging against the table. He had a point. I would have been mortified if the kids had seen me like that, for so many reasons. His presence of mind was impressive. I'd barely registered Mordecai coming out of his room.
"They'll each need their own bedrooms, though," he went on, before reaching down and adjusting himself.
My gaze snagged on the motion, and fantasies of replacing his touch with mine brought my blood back to boiling. I wiped my forehead of moisture.
"He's a healthy teenage boy now. He'll need some privacy," Kieran said, leaning back.
"They're well used to changing in the bathroom," I said, returning to the potatoes. "They think of each other as siblings -there's no cause for alarm"
"You're not hearing what I'm saying." He stepped closer to the table. "I'm not sure how it is for girls, but for boys, he's at the age where his dick will be his favorite pastime. He'll be dreaming about girls while-"
"Ew, okay." I held up my hands to stop the words. "Got it. I know what you mean now. All clear."
"He needs his own room."
"I've already had the talk with him. He knows to deal with that stuff in the bathroom. Or shower. Or he can clean out the back shed and have his own personal wank shack. Whatever. He knows I won't pass judgment as long as he keeps it out of their shared room."
He shook his head before turning back to the counter. "That's an incredibly awkward conversation. How'd he take it?"
"It's only awkward if you're being awkward about it. It's a natural human situation. It's not a big deal."
"It will be if he doesn't think anyone is home, wants the comfort of his bed, and Daisy walks in on him. That won't be a good scene. Or if he thinks she's asleep and-"
"Okay, okay. Jesus, how often did you play whack-a-mole with yourself?"
"All the time. That's what I'm saying."
I pushed off of the chair and looked out into the connected family room, something I should've done before proceeding with this conversation. Thankfully, Mordecai was lightly snoring on the couch and Daisy was probably doing the same in my room.
"Well…I can move Daisy into my room permanently, I guess. But then I'll have to use the bathroom…"
Kieran stilled, his whole body going stiff. "What do you use? Your fingers, or a vibrator?"
I slid my forearm across my forehead, my body pounding again.
"None of your business," I forced out, my throat tight.
"Can I watch?" He glanced back, his tone teasing but his eyes on fire. "You can use both methods, and then compare them with my cock. See which one gets you off the best."
"Vibrator, easy." I cleared my throat. "It's got all the bells and whistles. Men just aren't equipped to compete."
"I'm not a man." His voice was deep and rich. "I'm a god."

~

I left him standing there, a powerful, strong man - a prince of the magical world - in my tiny, run-down kitchen, nearly brought to his knees by the passing of his mother. The image crawled into my heart and settled, bringing tears to my eyes. He did share some of his father's traits - he was possessive, demanding, and downright terrifying. But he also had so much of his mother, like compassion morality, and a beautiful soul.
Unlike his father, he didn't love himself above all others. If I'd ever doubted, I now saw the proof before my eyes. He would sacrifice his wellbeing to bring peace to his mother. He would let go of the hope of his own throne to make sure she found her permanent resting place.
He would go to war with a more powerful foe to bring her justice.

~

"I got hit, then quit." I leaned back. "What he wrote on the note is what he said to his mother when she left my bedroom. To him, it's over. He doesn't want me near the job, he doesn't want me going after the spirit trapper, and he doesn't want me in his life at all. He'll pay me, but that's it. You guys got your wish.
My throat burned and my chest felt tight. The weird new feeling in my middle started aching. I swallowed down the emotion, but before I could say anything else, Daisy slammed her hand down on the table.
"That's bullshit! No way. Am I right, Mordecai? He can't just" - she swung her hand over the table - "waltz in here, mess with her mind, and then take off. That's fucked up." She put her finger in the air and looked at me with raised eyebrows. "I know the new rule is no swearing-"
"That's always been the rule-"
"-but this warrants it. He stalks you, gets his mom freed, gets some punani, and then he walks?" She stood from the table and paced the kitchen floor, acting the part of the scorned woman on my behalf. "He needs his dick cut off, that's what he needs."
A smile emerged on Bria's face as she watched Daisy. "This kid is my spirit animal."

~

"Thank you for helping me, Alexis. Thank you for…everything."
She nodded, but didn't speak.
He wasn't sure what else to say. "I'm just going to sit here for awhile.…"
She nodded again, but didn't get up.
"What makes you think that I'm going to do anything you say?" she said finally.
"This isn't up for discussion-"
She surged up from the bench and spun toward him, her face flushed and eyes shooting fire.
"I love taking handouts, don't get me wrong," she started, and he couldn't help a smile. "But if you think I'm going to let you walk into danger all by yourself, after everything you've done for me and my family, you've got a screw loose. I'm in this now, Kieran. I might not know what the hell I'm doing, and I might not be an incredible asset like the others, but I'm really good at plucking souls out of dead bodies. And I'm excellent at banishing souls. And…communicating with them. And that's something."
She balled her fists and dug in her heels. "Don't waste my heart on you? Fine. I won't. But I also won't waste my life hiding from a fight because it might not go my way. I've lived in that dual-society hellhole all my life. If anyone should fight for the people in the magical government not to be such turds, it's me. I have a score to settle, too. Someone has to get Valens back for treating spirits badly. For killing fairies and illegal game. I mean, fuck that guy! So screw you. I'm joining this fight. I'm joining the ranks. There's nothing you can do to stop me. Besides kill me, and I'll haunt the shit out of you."
He surged up before he knew what he was doing. He'd wanted to do what his mother had said. To do the right thing. He'd tried. But if the woman wouldn't go…
He grabbed her neck and reeled her in, crashing his lips to hers and kissing her for all he was worth.

She lives in the dual society zone, where the magical and non magical live together in peace, though it is not the best part of town, where the poor people live. Alexis has two wards, Mordecai and Daisy. Mordecai is a shifter who is ill and needs expensive medication, his parents were murdered by the shifter who took over as alpha of his pack. If he finds Mordecai he would surely challenge him and kill him since he fears Mordecai would someday get strong and be able to beat him in a fight. Daisy is a human without any magic. Alexis has always been under the radar, making sure the powers that be thought that she had only level two magical powers, but Kieran knew from the start that she was really a level five.

The Hero: Kieran - he is a demigod (descended from Poseidon) and is the son of Valens, the demigod in charge of everything. His father killed his mother, who was a selkie and Valens is somehow keeping her selkie skin which means Kieran’s mother can’t pass on to the other side, since selkie’s need their skin to pass over. Kieran is trying to free his mother and take down his father, and since Alexis is a level five ghost whisperer, he knows she will be able to help him free his mother.

The Story: The first book, Sin & Chocolate, was about getting to know the characters, their lives and what they could do magically. This book was more about getting in to the plot about Kieran’s father and how awful he is, and the storyline about them wanting to free his mother and take down his father. Alexis went to work for Kieran and though he kept her under the radar, she started training to control her magic and looking in to all the terrible things Valens has ben doing while he reigned as the highest authority in San Francisco. Alexis plans to help free Kieran’s mother so she can cross over, and she also plans to help all the others that Valens has trapped in the world of the living.

Like Sin & Chocolate, I thought this one was very interesting. It certainly held my interest and I liked the characters quite a bit. There were a lot of great supporting characters, like the six that protect Kieran, especially the grumpy Zoran, and Bria the necromancer, as well as Mordecai and Daisy. The ghosts were pretty great as well. Especially the old guy that spends his time outside Lexie’s house, standing on her lawn.

This audiobook was told in multiple points of view and was narrated in duet narration by a full cast, Matthew Pauli, Andrew James Spooner, Bradley Foster Smith, Yenni Ann, Yasmin Tuazon, Alex Hill-Knight, Lena Lee, Robb Moreira, Rayner Gabriel, Danny Gavigan, Gabriel Michael. The audio contains music and background noises as well. It is done very well and makes it a full immersive experience. I really enjoyed it. They could have gone a completely different way with the narration, more serious and subdued, and I probably would have liked it that way as well. Though the they went was more satirical and kooky which was fun and gave it a completely different feel than what you would probably get from reading this series.

The characters made me laugh out loud with their crazy talk, especially the supporting ones. Loved it.

2 STARS

See? This is what I'm talking about. Series like this will start off good, but will eventually take a nosedive somewhere. In my case, it's in the second book. I thought it had me, but halfway through, I started to get annoyed. I was hyped up in the first book, but boy how wrong I was. Not only that, but I have so many issues with this book:

1. Kieran orchestrated a break-in in her house at the crack of the morning without a warning whatsoever that it was included in her training. Alexis should be angry. Yeah, she was angry, alright, but that lasted for about 30 damn seconds before she went back from her "I'm hot for Kieran." dilemma. I mean, fuck this guy! How come I'm angrier than her? Kieran and his minions had no right to orchestrate a break-in without running it to her first.

2. Bria was ANNOYING as fuck. I think this is the main reason I had a fallout with this book. I can't stand her and the way she acted throughout the book! Why was she never called out for disobeying orders from a Demigod? Does she think they're equal? Bria was introduced as a badass necromancer, but all she did was act impulsively and drags Alexis with her without thinking of any consequences. I think she thought highly of herself and doesn't care for what other people think. I can't stand it.

3. Alexis's character was disappointing in this book. It was like, a different Alexis from another multiverse woke up and replaced the last one. The strong, independent, and snarky heroine I knew from the first book was replaced by a clueless and whiny bitch. I think everything she does was her being dragged out by Bria even though she was "kind of" opposed to it.

4. For a ghost whisperer, I don't understand the disrespect towards the spirits like they're not people before. She wants to free all the trapped spirits but she talks to them like they're some dirt in her shoes. I just don't get it. Why did she have to be a bitch to them at all times?

5. Alexis kept scolding Daisy or Mordecai to not swear, but she kept swearing in front of them. I mean, what??

6. Kieran and Alexis are all about sex, lust and sex! Where's the deep emotional connection or some sort. I'd like to read a scene where it doesn't involved them getting sex or having sexual urges!

Overall, I fucking can't anymore. I'm just glad I'm over with this book. I don't think I'm planning on continuing this series but I guess, when I'm not in the right mind, we'll see.

5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 - The action and the romance between Lexi and Kieran made this a far superior read to its predecessor!

Book two in the Demigod of San Francisco series by K.F. Breene, Sin & Magic picks up directly after the closing events of the first book Sin & Chocolate and is not designed to be read as a standalone novel.

I wasn't expecting much from this book, as I found the first book to be well written, but incredibly slow moving and not much action delivered. I was pleasantly surprised to find that was not the case here. Breene picks up the plot and character development and propels it forward with great aplomb. The undercurrent of sexual tension between Kieran and Lexi boils over and the interactions between Lexi and her new partner in crime/trainer - ace Necromancer Bria had me grinning.

Lexi begins to come into her own with her powers and becomes an agent for change and good rather than being the manipulated and put upon character of the first book. Although the power dynamic between Lexi and Kieran is still heavily weighted in his favour, his growing emotions for Lexi, give her the edge to be able to defy him and move more towards acting like a partner, rather than coerced employee.

All in all, nice tight plot, great character development of protagonist couple and some cracking secondary characters. There's no big cliffhanger, but the story is definitely not finished and I've already pre-ordered the next book: Sin & Salvation!

Spoilers ahead, 3.5*

In the beginning of this one we get recaps of the previous book and I wasn't a fan. I think books that continue from previous ones shouldn't contain information already covered, however that didn't last long
I actually like the secondary characters much more than the mcs, the guys of the six, Mordecai and especially Daisy and Bria are what caused me to rate this book so highly
Alexis the fmc has some good moments but she suffered From betraying body syndrome so I quickly became less of a fan of hers
Kieran our mmc isn't as Alpha as I expected, he was possessive of her yet broke things off twice "for her own good". If she hadn't accidentally done her soul link thing would they have still been involved? Hmmmm then he broke it off again and she was the one who insisted she's staying to finish the fight. One would think a man essentially going to war would be thinking to keep a powerful being like Alexis at his side, maybe even vow to the death to protect her.....something about the romance isn't working much for me
The rest of the book is really good however so I'm moving on to the next

I absolutely connect with this author and her writing style in a way that I can't quite explain, and I find myself completely captivated by her work. After thoroughly enjoying her first book, which had a gripping plot and well-developed characters, I eagerly delved into this latest offering. It did not disappoint; in fact, it was just as compelling and engaging as the first. The way she weaves intricate narratives with emotional depth keeps me hooked, and I can't wait to explore more of her stories.

Re-read January 2021.
It's still awesome!

When a book is so good and entertaining that you, purposefully, read it oh so slowly.
Just so you can enjoy it as long as possible...
This is such a book!

I love the characters especially Alexis, Mordecai and Daisy. But I also like Keiran and his six. I have a little trouble with the other Necromancer, because she is not keeping Alexis save but puts her in dangers line all the time.

Edit:
This third time I listened to the graphicaudio production. And I really love them.
