The year he was fifteen, Ling Ke realized he was gay, and that he fell in love with a hot guy the same gender he was! Ling Ke spied on the other’s online friend group, payed attention to that person’s every move, and privately, started his fanatical fanboying actions. Unfortunately, the hot guy he liked was someone who changed girlfriends like he changed clothes, a pretentious and straight male.

A few years later, Ling Ke and the hot guy he was secretly in love with got into the same university and became good friends. In order to prevent his beloved from hating him, Ling Ke repressed his true feelings and forced himself to pretend to be a 24k, pure gold straight guy.

……

Having high-spec looks, Qi Feng was a networking expert, but in order to preserve his all-around shining and popular hearthrob image, he always hid his true sexuality, that he was gay. He got himself (fake) girlfriends all throughout school, literally playing himself into being branded as a skirt-chaser.

Until one day, he met his true love. The other looked delicate and gentle, cold and out-of-reach, as if the ideal lover he’d dreamed of in his heart.

Except, there was just one thing. That guy also looked completely straight……

In short, this is the love story of two scared, in-the-closet gay guys pretending to be straight while mutually trying to feel the other out.

English title: The Daily Life of Being the Campus Idol’s Fake Boyfriend

Ling Ke starts university, only to discover his secret crush is one of his roommates—and, surprise, Qi Feng has forgotten him again. Certain that Qi Feng is straight, Ling Ke suppresses his feelings and pretends to be the ultimate straight buddy. But how is a straight guy supposed to act, anyway? Ling Ke’s confusion and struggles pile up with each passing day—until Qi Feng drops a bombshell and asks him to be his fake boyfriend. What now???

I devoured the main story in just two days (and stayed up way too late last night >.<). Needless to say, I was completely hooked. The story mostly unfolds through Ling Ke’s POV, but the mini theaters reveal Qi Feng’s side of things, and boy, they’re both trying so hard to keep up their facades, it’s absolutely hysterical.

This is a light-hearted, quick read. There are several translations available, but I went with wintertranslates.wordpress.com. While it claims to be a summary because it doesn't follow the raw word-for-word, I loved how the translation flows. The colloquial wording captures how young people talk and the vibe of campus life the best.

— ling ke & qi feng are are so dumb and i mean that both in a very affectionate and derogatory way

— like. the whole novel is just the spiderman meme where they point at each other in confusion. zero brain cells to be spared i truly love the dumbass4dumbass trope

— it was a bit draggy at the start but the characters were so entertaining that i forgave the slow pace!

Corto y entretenido.

The funniest part of this series was that it exposed the fact that the best way to fly under the radar as a gay man was to act gay with other men. Performative queerness is a very straight male thing to do. It only backfired because two gay men were pretending to be gay together until it actually became gay. Shocker.

Maybe 5 stars is a little much, but honestly guys I think this might be the best Eastern m/m novel I've ever read. It's cute, it's well paced, the Male Lead isn't a creep, there's no rampant homophobia, and it's just!!! The best!!! Even the misunderstandings they have aren't annoying-- They're completely reasonable. Hell, it outdoes even the most popular m/f novels I've read.

If you can read Mandarin or find a good English translation (or even if you don't mind MTL) then READ THIS.

Okaaaaay, empiezo.

- Personajes:

4. Al parecer, él tiene su propio libro, so I'm looking forward to read that one.

Everyone Thinks That I like Him

AMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I actually really liked this novel! The premise was intriguing but I didn't have high expectations for it - turns out, it's so much better than I anticipated. This novel doesn't sell itself as more than it is, it's very simple and light to read, which is one of the reasons why I like it so much.

Character-wise, I really like these characters and how they fit into the story, plus how the author describes them, especially the main couple. Ling Ke is a very well written character, a great protagonist, and a very interesting person to read about. Qi Feng is really nice, almost the perfect guy, but is still tormented by his insecurities just as much as Ling Ke, ence their game of being "fake boyfriends" because they thought of each other as straight. The side characters are also a lot of fun and I wish we could get some more development for them but the novel isn't supposed to be super deep and overall I like the main characters enough that this isn't a downside to me.

The plot isn't anything ground-breaking, and overall this is just a fluffy heartwarming simple story between two university students, with its ups and downs, but it's that simplicity that also makes it so good and so much fun to read.

The amount of mutual pining as well as the slow burn romance is so well done, the pacing is neither too fast or too slow, and you can feel the tension oozing from the novel. It's so great. 👌

Cute college story featuring two dense main characters. I liked that they actually met a long time ago, and that Qi Feng was actually the impetus for Ling Ke to improve his grades and get into one of the top schools in the country. They go way back even if Qi Feng doesn't remember it :D

There were some cute moments, like when LK has no sense of how far they can joke around as "straight guys" and go way past that point, but QF also isn't sure so LK's actions make him doubt a little but it's not enough for him to know for sure.

QF's confession to LK on the stage with the song was another cute moment, though that was ruined a little bit by one of QF's old crushes thinking the song was for her and confronting QF about it before LK could talk to him.

But hey, all's well that ends well. I was super excited for them to finally realize the truth about each other and their true feelings (about time guys!!). There were so many time I thought it would happen, only for one of them to wuss out or they get interrupted. Thank goodness for QF's best buddy to set him straight (haaa) about QF's questionable actions as a straight man.

The beginning was really slow. The fake dating (the title of the book) starts at around 50%. The 'oh no im carrying tissues thats such a gay thing' would have worked if the book would not take it self so serious. I don't know if it because of the author or because of the translation. It just came off as sexist sometimes, idk. This book would also be really short if Ling Ke and Qi Feng would just communicate with eachother.

But I love a cold cat like shou (Ling Ke) and a possessive but kind puppy gong (Qi Feng) so I really enjoyed this. I did feel that everything at the end got wrapped up too fast and left some open questions. (I do not read extras so I dont know if it was included in those chapters.)

A simple but cute story. The author notes were the funniest bits of the book.

— mc has been crushing on ml since they were kids. when he got into college, they became roommates....and the fake dating thing is for you to find out
— pure slice-of-life fluff, definitely a light read!
— they fumbled so hard at pretending i was screaming
— slow‑burn? more like creeping realization. they’re both clueless, pretending, second-guessing, tiptoeing around honesty, and I LIVE for every blushing near-miss and growing tension.
— they both fall first. like, simultaneously. but neither admits it. the whole thing is an adorable tragedy of mutual denial and a goofy misunderstanding.
— is cute and ABSOLUTELY FUNNY!!
— read if you like fake dating, campus shenanigans, and college slice-of-life BL that steers clear of angst

This was so cute! I love mutual pining and when paired with two oblivious dorks pretending to be gay while pretending to be straight, it was just a whole lot of Gay PanicTM and many hilarious situations where the MC and ML were like "oh no how do i act like this isn't what i want at all???"

I really liked the MC and ML and they were a good match for each other, balancing each other out. Plus, the side characters were also really funny and supportive. I especially liked Qi Feng's (ML) mother who was so badass and supported both the MC and ML after they revealed their relationship to her.

The extra stories at the end were also so wholesome and I am very satisfied at how this story ended.

Finished it in a shorter amount of time than expected.

It's a silly little novel about gays pretending to be straights and the fake dating trope. It was a nice read and it has its funny moments but I can't say there was rlly anything special about it. I don't have much to say against the novel, but I don't have much else to say in its favour.

I wouldn't recommend it if you're looking for a more "realistic" read, but it doesn't do harm to just read it for the funsies. Overall a Nice Light-Hearted Read, glad I didn't have to go through the seven stages of grief with this one.

pros: very sweet and fluffy, pacing is good, great translations and writing style, really likeable characters with a great and healthy dynamic, relatively short and not heavy so a pretty nice read for inbetween, pretty funny with the misunderstanding and not overdone (since the novel isnt that long the misunderstanding didnt switch from funny to genuinely annoying)

cons: one r word mention in the little theater

Reading this with light piano bgm is just right. I can imagine the scenes depicted on the novel so vividly. I like the pace, albeit slow, but it gives me enough time to fully create the scene in my mind, and to absorb the character’s feelings. Very relaxing to read. This was actually quite sweet, and occasionally funny. Some parts are a bit bland and the plot is actually a bit childish as well. I feel like the target readers for this danmei are high school fujoshi.

This is VERY VERY VERY Slow burn romance!

The main character meets his crush when they were little after a short conversation, some years past and when they were in high school they were reunited in another event BUT his crush didn't remember him at all... sad his only option was to follow him in the shadows on his wechat updates.

And finally when he enters in the Uni discover that his long time crush is now his roomate!
They are both so cute! It worth it!!

uhh, reading this danmei reaffirm my stance on fake-dating trope; just bland and not exactly up to my right alley. i guess i really didn't like the misunderstandings that came as a integral part of this trope, which could come off frustrating at some parts. i wasn't exactly attached to both mc and ml, and the humor, even though i know there are people who'd having a blast reading this, wasn't personally up to my taste.
