A complementary copy of THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO MODERN MASSAGE by Ryan Jay Hoyme was sent to me by Callisto Publishing Club for which I am grateful. Being a retired Massage Therapy Instructor and certified by the Texas Department of Health to have a school of massage, I am in a unique position to give a professional as well as personal review.
Being a massage therapist at the beginning of massage therapy, I introduced and promoted it as a profession and a powerful healing modality. I was the first massage therapist in the world to teach animal massage to veterinarians.
Overall, this book is definitively a "complete guide" and presents a highly professional overview of many modalities of massage. The pictures are beautifully descriptive and professional and valuable to the information being presented.
It presents methods of massage from babies through to seniors. In addition, it describes the methodology of massage for certain dis-eases and ailments like neck, shoulder, and back pain.
To be clear, there are many methods described in this book that would need an instructor rather than just a book description to learn. These include cranial sacral massage, ayurvedic, reflexology, reiki, shiatsu, sports massage, thai and others. Preferably the reader will understand that this book is a guide not total instruction to be proficient.
This book would be valuable to every school of massage as an adjunct to the materials that each school uses to assist students in becoming certified/licensed as their resident state requires. It is also a great book for partners who want to learn more about touching one another in healthy and loving ways.
Decent enough intro, simple and usable for someone like me who has no idea about the subject and is just trying to have a good time with his wife. But don't confuse this book with anything but a primer.
The book for review is “The Complete Guide To Modern Massage: Step-By-Step Massage Basics and Techniques From Around The World” by Ryan Jay Hoyme.LMT, BCTMB. This book falls in the genre of health/fitness and massage and reflexology.
This book dives into various methods when it comes to massage that you can use on your partner and they on you. But why even consider it?
Massage is a natural way to relieve pain and stress which can enrich your live and also help with your overall mood It gives a brief history of massaging that is interesting.
It comes down to trigger the trigger points in a person’s body and how sensitive, wound up or painful they may be can effect how you live.
You learn about the basic anatomy meridians and the different chakra in the body. Mentioned are techniques that can get you started such as gliding, kneading percussion and feathering. It continues with the rest of the body such as the head, the face, the neck, the back and the complete body.
There is even a section on how to self massage one’s self as well as a section on different methods from around the world. The are illustrations throughout the book that are beautifully done and easy to follow to help you with the description.
This is a good overall view to help us be more relaxed, stress free and hopefully in less pain.
I received this book for free from the Callisto Publishing Club but the opinions are my own.
I picked up this book having almost zero knowledge on this topic but this book really helps with giving me some exposure about the world of massage which I really appreciate. It is quite comprehensive with guides on how to massage different bodies including babies, pregnant women, seniors, among others. The author's vast experience was sprinkled into the book too with tips and tricks on matters like which aromatherapy to couple the massage with and so on.
I only wish the book does not rely solely on 2D illustrations because it was a bit difficult to imagine how the technique is being performed in real life. But thankfully the author has his own Youtube channel so I suppose I can use that to supplement this book.
This is a good intro guide for beginners to learn a bit of massage techniques from all over the world. Before reading it, I didn't realize that so many massage techniques require oil and skin-to-skin contact (I've never had a professional massage session). I was more hoping to learn some tricks and tips for massaging friends and families, and I got a couple of ideas after skimming the book. Videos that complement the text can be more helpful in teaching the techniques.

Great book I’ve been massaging my wife for years This book gave me a quick run down with photos of all of the major schools of massage and their techniques It got my brain thinking more on other techniques that I want to study and learn more, not just for my wife, but for my daughter and soon to be son
Enjoyed the introduction, (a bit of massage history, description of trigger points). But the author became known for their videos (as they themselves describe) and I see how this medium would be much more suited to the transmission of motion techniques. Images with descriptions felt a bit dry to me !
An excellent guide, and very thorough, without being too wordy or collegiate.
I suggest searching for videos of the techniques discussed too, as static pictures and written descriptions are generally not the best way to learn a physical activity.
An good book to start massage therapy with. I found it was very easy to understand some of the principles in there for the beginners. I just need it a little bit more specific with knowledge.
